  Using the Business Application template from the brand new released RIA Services, you can see lots of examples using the data grid on top of a DomainDataSource in combination with a DataPager. The properties PageSize and LoadSize can be used to adjust the amount of data to be displayed in one page and the data that is prefetched in the background. Now I'd like to have a data grid with a scrollbar and no pager. The underlying DomainDataSource should load only the data that is diplayed in the grid. It should trigger another load, when the user scrolls down to items that are not yet in the data context. Is there any sample implementation how to do this?

They were talking about SharePoint and Windows Workflow and how the "dream" of Windows Workflow is to let mere Business Analyst Drag and Drop their way to a functioning service. I am a newbie dotnet developer, and afraid that by the time I get to Consulting "Level" my skills would be obsolete. Should I abandon learning basic skills and just learn how to work with Frameworks and Packaged applications such as SAP, SharePoint, BizTalk. Am I wasting time trying to learn Expression Trees and Func of T's?

• Avoid copying of data between user and kernel space and vice-versa

  Hello, I am developing a active messaging protocol for parallel computation that replaces TCP/IP. My goal is to decrease the latency of a packet. Since the environment is a LAN, i can replace TCP/IP with simpler protocol to reduce the packet latency. I am not writing any device driver and i am just trying to replace the TCP/IP stack with something simpler. Now I wanted to avoid copying of a packet's data from user space to kernel space and vice-versa. I heard of the mmap(). Is it the best way to do this?   I'm a newbie with SQL... Now I want to do display some instances of AddrDistances from DevExpress CxGrid with SQL. Select Cast((DistanceAsMeters * 0.001) as Decimal(8,1)) DistanceAsKm, bold_id, created, fromAddress, toAddress From AddrDistance Where DistanceAsMeters = 0 and PseudoDistanceAsCostKm = 0 and not AddrDistance.bold_id in (select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask) Order By Created Desc This SQL is working and the result is: DistanceAsKM Bold_ID Created FromAddress ToAddress 0 134808 16.02.2010 121795 134570 0 121701 10.03.2010 120850 122991 The result I want is this: DistanceAsKM Bold_ID Created FromAddress ToAddress 0 134808 16.02.2010 Kalmar Stockholm 0 121701 10.03.2010 Falkenberg Oslo So the amount of rows is right but I want to replace the numbers in FromAddress and ToAddress with strings from another table. The numbers shows here is just the boldid. Every object in the database have an unique boldid. The addresses above is stored in table Address and it have a City field with the column and a boldid as a key. What should I write in SQL to get this right ? Is there something in the CxGrid that could help here ? Regards

• Silverlight datagrid don't show any data with anonymous query RIA services

I have an anonymous linq query that I bind to a datagrid, when I debug it brings alright the data but it doesn't show in the datagrid, I suspect that the request to RIA services isn't completed before I bound it to the datagrid. I could use the LoadOperation<() Completed event. But it only works with Defined Entities so how can I do that? • MySQL indexes: how do they work?

  I'm a complete newbie with MySQL indexes. I have several MyISAM tables on MySQL 5.0x having utf8 charsets and collations with 100k+ records each. The primary keys are generally integer. Many columns on each table may have duplicate values. I need to quickly count, sum, average, or otherwise perform custom calculations on any number of fields in each table or joined on any number of others. I found this page giving an overview of MySQL index usage: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-indexes.html, but I'm still not sure I'm using indexes right. Just when I think I've made the perfect index out of a collection of fields I want to calculate against, I get the "index must be under 1000 bytes" error. Can anyone explain how to most efficiently create and use indexes to speed up queries? Caveat: upgrading Mysql is not possible in this case. Using Navicat Light for db administration, but this app isn't required.

  I'm developing an AS3 application which has some memory leaks I can't find, so I'd like to ask some newbie questions about memory management. Imagine I have a class named BaseClass, and some classes that extend this one, such as ClassA, ClassB, etc. I declare a variable: myBaseClass:BaseClass = new ClassA(); After a while, I use it to instantiate a new object: myBaseClass = new ClassB(); some time after myBaseClass = new ClassC(); and the same thing keeps happening every x millis, triggered by a timer. Is there any memory problem here? Are the unused instances correctly deleted by the garbage collector? Thanks!

• Mahout Recommendations on Binary data

  Hi, I'm a newbie to mahout.My aim is to produce recommendations on binary user purchased data.So i applied item-item similarity model in computing top N recommendations for movie lens data assuming 1-3 ratings as a 0 and 4-5 ratings as a 1.Then i tried evaluating my recommendations with the ratings in the test-data but hardly there have been two or three matches from my top 20 recommendations to the top rated items in test data and no match for most users.   I'm a relatively newbie to object oriented programming in JavaScript, and I'm unsure of the "best" way to define and use objects in JavaScript. I've seen the "canonical" way to define objects and instantiate a new instance, as shown below. function myObjectType(property1, propterty2) { this.property1 = property1, this.property2 = property2 } // now create a new instance var myNewvariable = new myObjectType('value for property1', 'value for property2'); But I've seen other ways to create new instances of objects in this manner: var anotherVariable = new someObjectType({ property1: "Some value for this named property", property2: "This is the value for property 2" }); I like how that second way appears - the code is self documenting. But my questions are: Which way is "better"? Can I use that second way to instantiate a variable of an object type that has been defined using the "classical"way of defining the object type with that implicit constructor? • How to navigate through folders without opening a new buffer in Emacs?

  (I don't know if it is important, but I am using Aquamacs - and yeah, I am a newbie) When I want to open a file I use C-x C-f and usually just chose my home folder. From there I go clicking on folders until I find the file I want. I really don't like thought that each new file I open creates a new buffer. This is especially annoying because I am using Aquamacs with the window (tab) option enabled. I know I could simply get rid of the window option, but I quite like it, except of course for when I open a file and a zillion tabs are created. So my question is: is there a way to disable the new buffer creation when "navigating" through folders? Thanks :)

• Is ORM (Linq, Hibernate...) really that useful?

  I have been playing with some LINQ ORM (LINQ directly to SQL) and I have to admit I like its expressive powers . For small utility-like apps, It also works quite fast: dropping a SQL server on some surface and you're set to linq away. For larger apps however, the DAL never was that big of an issue to me to setup, nor maintain, and more often than not, once it was set, all the programming was not happening there anyway... My, honest - I am an ORM newbie - question : what is the big advantage of ORM over writing a decent DAL by hand?   Hey, I am making some stuff in Objective-C++... And I must say that I am a total newbie when it comes to the Objective-C part... I don't really want to learn it, I kinda just need it for accessing a few Mac APIs (ObjC is such a dumb language). So - compiling with g++ -x objective-c++ - and I somehow keep getting this warning: XXX may not respond to YYY First it was with a NSScreen, now it is with a NSWindow: NSWindow may not respond to +initWithContentRect:styleMask:backing:defer: I saw somewhere that I should cast it to id, but didn't work, throwing absolutely cryptic errors... So - WHAT does this warning actually mean and HOW am I supposed to make it stop?

  I'm trying to create stillimages with PHP-FFMPEG; but suddenly after installing FFMPEG and FFMPEG-PHP from scratch on a brand new server, all images are created with a green and blueish tint. <?PHP $flvmov = new ffmpeg_movie("test.mp4"); $flvframe = $flvmov->getFrame(50); $flvgd = $flvframe->toGDImage(); imagepng($flvgd, "test.png", 0); imagedestroy($flvgd); ?> I've tried imagejpeg, and other video inputs without luck. Previously this worked perfectly. But now I'm stuck, and I've tried all revs between FFMPEG-PHP-0.5.1 - 0.6.1. Anyone that could think of what this could be?

• Symfony 1.4: Is it possible to prevent escaping of a redirect URL?

  Hi, If I do a redirect in action as normal: $this->redirect('@mypage?apple=1&banana=2&orange=3'); ... Symfony produces the correct URL: /something/something?apple=1&banana=2&orange=3 However, the following gets escaped for some bizarre reason: $string = 'apple=1&banana=2&orange=3'; $this->redirect('@mypage?'.$string); ... and the following URL is produced: /something/something?apple=1&amp;banana=2&amp;orange=3 Is there a way to avoid this escaping and have the ampersands appear correctly in the URL? I've tried everything I can think of and it's driving me mad. I need this for a situation where I'm pulling a saved query as a string from the database and would just like to latch it onto the URL. I'm aware that I could generate an array from the string and then generate a brand new URL from the array, but it just seems like a lot of overhead because of this silly escaping. Thanks.

• Gridview : Hyperlink and description in the same column cell

  Hi Guys, Apologies for the newbie question. My client wishes me to make a small change to the gridview on his http://www.flogitdonegal.com/SearchPage.aspx page. Note the way the Title column is a hyperlink to view more information. This comes from a 'BriefDescription' field in the database. How can I add 250 chars from the 'FullDescription' underneath the Title in the same cell, but I dont want it be a hyperlink. Essentially it will be 2 fields coming into the same column. In my case I have multiple Ruby on Rails applications: users.example.com profiles.example.com photos.example.com ... I would like to use 'users.example.com' as a web service that allows users to authenticate to all my other applications the same way as works "Facebook connect" or OpenID. In few words, 'users.example.com' must works as a "OpenID-like system" for my applications in 'example.com'. Can anyone give me tips and links to some useful resources? • Trying to Install Rails 3

  I'm trying to install Rails 3 on a brand new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.3, Ruby 1.8.7, and Rails 2.3.5 and I'm wondering if I've hosed myself. So far, I've run these commands: $ gem update --system $ gem install arel tzinfo builder memcache-client rack rack-test rack-mount erubis mail text-format thor bundler i18n $ gem install rails --pre However, when I run the last command, I get this error: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError) You don't have write permissions into the /usr/bin directory. I think it wants me to run the command with sudo so that it can write over /usr/bin/rails. But if I do that, won't I be overwriting my Rails 2.3.5 executable? I don't want to do that. Instead, I'd like to keep both versions of Rails. Can anyone help? Thanks.

• ajax/jquery disables links after submit

  i am working on this form. i am using lightbox and dhtml fade effects. the content in my lightbox is a form. i am using jquery to validate the form. once the form is submitted, i redirect a user back to a thank you page. what i am noticing is that, once all the above events has taken place, i cannot click anywhere on my screen, all the links/buttons are sort of disable. i need to press F5 to refresh the page to be able to click anywhere on the page again? is this happening because i am using jquery validation and an events already took place, how do i resolve this as i am a newbie to jquery. thanks
