• What is annotations and how do it actually works for frameworks like Spring ?

  I am new to Spring and now a days I hear a lot about Spring Framework. I have two sets of very specific questions: Set No. 1: What are annotations in general ? How does annotations works specifically with Spring framework ? Can annotations be used outside Spring Framework or are they Framework specific ? Set No. 2: What module of Spring Framework is widely used in Industry ? I think it is Spring MVC but why it is the most used module, if am correct or correct me on this ? I am newbie to Spring and so feel free to edit this questions to make more sense.

( Don't laugh I know it is very basic :) ) Item -> interface Folder -> class File -> class In folder class, can I create an arraylist of Item to store files information? ArrayList<Item> info = ArrayList<Item>(); Or should I use Folder Arraylist? • Automatically CONCATENATE text on data entry

  I am a newbie and need help. I have a table called "Employees". It has 2 fields [number] and [encode]. I want to automatically take whatever number is entered into [number] and store it in [encode] so that it is preceded by the appropriate amount of 0's to always make 12 digits. Example: user enters '123' into [number], '000000000123' is automatically stored in [encode] user enters '123456789' into [number], '000123456789' is automatically stored in [encode] I think i want to write a trigger to accomplish this. I think that would make it happen at the time of data entry. is that right? The main idea is would be something like this: variable1 = LENGTH [number] variable2 = REPEAT (0,12-variable1) variable3 = CONCATENATE (variable2, [number]) [encode] = variable3 I just don't know enough to make this happen ANY help would be FANTASTIC.   Hi guys, So I'm slowly tackling OO and Zend Framework and their MVC process in particular. I have an existing website and web-based calendar application that was designed by me, but coded by a different person and done procedurally. I understand that it will be very difficult for my application to ever be completely OO without a full re-write, and I'm fine with that. I have a lot of updates and modifications I want to do in the future, so I'm wanting to start replacing some of the basic components (login, authentication. etc) now, and continue to learn as I go. Again, I'm really a newbie at programming and OO. What I'm wondering is if I'm wanting to incorporate the Framework, then would I just first drop my whole site into the /public folder of the Framework and then start pulling functionality out from there?

• Can Google App Engine be used for "check for updated" and download binary file web service?

  Hi, I'm a Google App Engine newbie and would be grateful for any help. I have an iPhone app which sources data from an sqlite db stored localling on the device. I'd like to set up a Google App Engine web service which my iPhone client will talk to and check if there is a newer version of the sqlite database it needs to download. So iPhone client hits the web service with some kind of version number/timestamp and if there is a newer file, the App Engine will notify the client and the client will then request the new database to download which the App Engine will serve. Is it possible to set up a web service in Google App Engine to do this? Could anyone point me to any sample code / tutorials please? Many Thanks

• SDK Facebook app - allow to use the app only on FB, not on my website

  I am newbie in creating apps for Facebook and I would like to ask you about a few things. I created my first app, in the settings I set up the domain URL, canvas URL, etc... when I load the app via apps.facebook.com/my_app_name the app is working, but also when I visit the page via the canvas URL I configured. Is there any way to only allow access to the app only when loaded inside the Facebook chrome? Also, in the app that I made are some links, buttons, etc. and when you hover over them with the mouse you can see my own domain in the status bar below. Is there a way to change that?

• PHP/MySQL - Special characters in URLs. How to avoid?

  Hey everyone, My database contains information extracted from an external feed. In this raw text feed, the following text is used in place of special characters: & - &amp; ' - &39; é - &eacute; I extract some of this text to form URLs. For example, a URL that I construct from data containing these characters might look like this: http://url.com/search/?brand=Franklin&Hédgson's I use the GET variables in this URL to construct further lookups, which leads to a couple of specific problems: The é and ' characters are sent back to MySQL as they appear, and so they don't trigger any results (because the characters take the full HTML form in the database text). The & within the URL separates the variable, and the GET returns only Franklin, when it should return the whole string. Are there any straightforward ways of dealing with this? Thanks.

  This may seam a newbie question but it is not. • C++ -malign-double compiler flag

  I need some help on compiler flags in c++. I'm using a library that is a port to linux from windows, that has to be compiled with the -malign-double flag, "for Win32 compatibility". It's my understanding that this mean I absolutely have to compile my own code with this flag as well? How about other .so shared libraries, do they have be recompiled with this flag as well? If so, is there any way around this? I'm a linux newbie (and c++), so even though I tried to recompile all the libraries I'm using for my project, it was just too complicated to recursively find the source for all the libraries and the libraries they're dependent on, and recompile everything.

• generating an asp.net web application dll requirement list

  I'm trying to set up a web app (32bit on ii7/win7, 32bit setting is enabled, everything is compiled to x86, using vs2008), but there's clearly some dll module loading issue happening. I've been watching procmon and fusion logs but I'm not seeing the name of the missing dll. I'm a complete newbie to asp.net (but fairly heavy experience on other platforms). I know I can call depends.exe on a binary to see what the dependancies are, but how do I do it for asp.net? specifically, is it possible to get a list of the dlls that iis7 loads for my application?

  In my rails app I have a search bar where users can search other users. Currently when a User submits the search from, they're redirected to a "results" page. I want to load those results in a div on the same page.. • How do I set up a test duplicate of a Django and Postgresql based web application?

  Not sure if this is an excessively broad and newbie-ish question for Stack Overflow but here goes: I paid someone else to build a web application for me and now I want to tweak certain aspects of it myself. I learn best by trial and error – changing stuff and seeing what happens. Obviously that's not a great way to treat a live site, so I need to duplicate the site on some kind of test server which I can play with without fear of the consequences. Unfortunately the closest I've come to programming has been creating ActionScript-based websites. I've never touched a database. So I really don't know where to start with setting up a test server. I would really appreciate any advice about where to start. I am completely ignorant and lost here. The web application is built in python/django using a Postgresql database. I use Mac OS X 10.6 if that makes any difference.

• Hide TabControl buttons to manage multiple panels stacked

  I need to handle multiple panels, containing variuous data masks. Each panel shall be visible using a TreeView control. At this time, I handle the panels visibility manually, by making the selected one visible and bring it on top. Actually this is not much confortable, especially in the UI designer, since when I add a brand new panel I have to resize every panel and then design it... A good solution would be using a TabControl, and each panel is contained in a TabPage. But I cannot find any way to hide the TabControl buttons, since I already have a TreeView for selecting items. Another solution would be an ipotethic "StackPanelControl", where the Panels are arranged using a stack, but I couldn't find it anywhere. What's the best solution to handle this kind of UI?

  I m much of a newbie to client/server applications and networking.I am currently starting up a project in which we are planning to create an application or something like a website accessible only to clients in that LAN network.We want the server to upload videos so that the clients can view them whenever they want.Also the clients can upload videos.Also we want some kind of registration to provide authentication to avoid bogus videos.Also additional features that can be added on later like comment section,ratings,Groups etc. Basically what we want is to build mini-youtube but with one major difference , we want the application to be LAN based. • [Android] How do I load URL that requires login into variable?

  I am trying to port my usage meter from a JavaScript Gadget (win) / Widget (OSX) to Android. Total newbie when comes to JAVA + Eclipse + Android 2.1 SDK. Essentially what I want to do is load a page, pass through a username and password and load the resulting page into a array that I can then run some regular expressions through. Should anyone stumble across port 80 of this server, I'd like to serve them a page explaining what the domain & server is for, instead of just 404'ing them. How can I serve one small, static, independent (i.e.: no images or CSS) HTML file, with a minimum of effort (meaning both a smooth setup for me, and minimum CPU expense). • very weird problem concerning date and time in silverlight + ria services

  Hello Friends i'm facing a very weird problem in sliverlight 4 + RIA Services, or maybe it's not weird and i'm just a newbie anyway i hope someone here can help, the problem is the following i've created a function on the server side inside the domain service this function is very simple and has a line in it that adds the server current date and time to the database (it's an HR application and employees should sign in and out thrue it each from it's own pc ) Emp.TimeOut = system.DateTime.now (C# syntax) the weird part is that for some users it always adds 3 hours to the current time(exp if he signes out at 5 it shows 8) and for others it works perfectly. the server and all the stations in the company have exactly the same time settings and the same time zone, and anyway my fucntion is on the server side so it should no be realted to the users time. any ideas why this is happening ? i've bin trying to find out why for days now but with no luck

• Conventional Approaches for Passing Data to Back-End?

  Hi guys, I'm fairly new to web development, so please pardon the painfully newbie question that's about to follow. My computer science class group and I are developing a web application for class, which is built in Python (under Django) and uses jQuery on the front end. It's primarily an AJAX-ified application, and passing data from the backend to the front end is done through AJAX calls to specific URLs which return JSON. This is probably a stupid question, but what's the conventional approach for passing data in the opposite direction? We don't want to reload the page or anything, so is it an AJAX pass going the other way or something? Thanks in advance for your help!
