• Continuing Education as a Part of Your Job [closed]

  I work as a programmer for a mid-sized company (about 500 employees) in the medical industry. Before that I worked at a custom software development/consulting company. At both companies programmers were never officially given time to continue their education through taking classes, reading books or blogs, or doing research relevant to the job. At the software development company we were offered some money to pay for a class, but not offered any time off of work to take the class. I have been wondering, do most employers of programmers give time off of work to take a class, read a book, or do job related research? By time off of work I just mean some period of time where you can stop development; it does not have to mean leaving the office. I would be grateful to hear about everyone's experience with this.

• Limiting my heavy thinking to my job [closed]

  This might be a weird problem which is only to a half relevant to actual programming, but hopefully there are people here that knows what I'm talking about. Basicly I'm proud of how I can deal with coding problems and fix them in short notice and many other aspects like building new systems and such. I'm fast on finding solutions and I often think about the impact my changes does to existing systems and so on, therefor preventing problem from arising at all and such. I am simply happy with how my mind operates when it comes to programming and I wouldn't want to change it at all. The problem, however is when I'm not programming. I find myself rather limited in social situations. I can't determine if it is through programming, but I sometimes think way to much about the consequences when it comes to being social. I know from own experience that most times you earn by not thinking about consequences, but it's hard for me not to. Often my friends tells me "I think too much" and even though I agree, I can't seem to change this behavior. My brain wants to think, and it likes to overthink simple stuff. Does anyone recognize the bad habit of not leaving advanced thinking at work, and in what way do you deal with it? If this isn't a suitable place to ask this question, I apologize and hope you may point me to the right site.

  Software development is an area where parallel development to its fullest form is very difficult to achieve, although you could get reasonably close with the right design. This is especially true for game development. That being said, if you are designing a game from scratch from engine to front end, what steps should be taken in order? How would you efficiently manage your project and your team? I'm asking because several people and I are interested in working on a relatively large project for learning purposes. Initially, we were going to use a proprietary engine like Unity, but since we wanted to learn how the engine works, we're going to start from bottom. • To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

• Steps to debugging web site latency and timeout issues

  I have a client who has multiple offices around the country, all of which share the same Internet connection via their WAN. One specific office for this client is experiencing severe latency and timeout issues with my web site. Most, but not all, of the latency occurs on a specific ASPX page where multiple postbacks are made while populating cascading dropdown lists (rapid form submits). The latency is sporadic and can be anywhere from a few seconds to a full timeout. There is no indication that the timeouts are occurring on the server's end. The IT guy for this client is having trouble narrowing down the problem. Since it is affecting only one location for one client, I am led to believe it is not something with my site but something specific to that location. He's measured ping times while using the site and has noticed no real variance in ping times even when the page has timed out. I believe this may be being caused by some sort of Internet filter that doesn't like rapid form submits, but beyond a hunch I haven't a clue. My question is what things should I tell the IT guy to look for? While I'm not trying to provide active tech support for this issue, I would at least like to glean an understanding of what is going on and try to offer some sort of advice. Thank you.

  here's the situation: This company offers local home services (construction...), but also fabricates many custom items that can be shipped nationally, and even internationally. Since i started working on this website, it has ranked pretty well on alexa global and locally, and i have made many SEO improvements that doubled the visits to the website in 6 months. The website is listed in many different directories (dmoz & etc...), maps (google maps & etc...), business listing sites (yelp & etc..), trade specific websites (angie's list, houzz & etc...), state specific business listings and etc, there are many links to pictures displayed on the website, links to the website itself, i have a google analytics and webmaster tools account, with sitemaps, newsletters, facebook page.... the list goes on and on. All of which have been working pretty well locally. We have had some success with doing business in other states and even other countries, but it is still a pretty small percentage of the market. I also advertise on google adwords locally, and since this would be the obvious answer, my question is: Without paid advertisement, how can i improve the visibility of this local business website nationally to attract customers in all US States?

  Many HTTP requests are sent repeatedly by browsers on almost every page load, such as requesting the jQuery .js file etc. Since these are already used on too many sites doesn't modern browsers keep a cache for this? I am thinking of a system where the browser has a cached copy of the .js file used very very frequently. On a new request for the .js file, it sends the server a request for a hash of the .js file (provided the server can reply to that) and compares the returned hash with the cached copy's hash... rest is intuitive.

• Career change: from programming into more human-oriented area [closed]

  I have been a software developer for approximately 9 years, starting with part-time work during my graduation year at uni. During these years I worked for number of companies, sometimes changing places twice or three times a year. They say it takes 10 years to reach 'expert' level, and while I don't think I am an expert by any measure and I have certainly met lots of people who are more knowledgeable, smarter and more focused than I am, I think I can safely say that I had my fair share of the whole programming trade and would like to move on to something else. Psychology and behaviour was always something I was interested in, especially the practical, applicable bits of it. Recently I've been to some communication skills training and I realised that I have been missing out on the great deal of fun stuff - how people work and communicate, especially in subconscious, non-verbal area. Currently I am thinking of making a career change - ideally to move somewhere my technical skill would still be beneficial in some shape or form, or at least could serve as a bridge while I am transitioning there, you know, the whole gradual, bit-by-bit approach versus swim-or-drown one. I would like to hear your thoughts on this matter and to learn from you what are the possible transitions I can take.

• Becoming an expert vs boredom [closed]

  I am a college student, and I love to program, period. I code all kinds of things in different kinds of languages. Although I enjoy programming, I have an extremely hard time sticking to one project for a long time. I attribute this shortcoming to my high level of curiosity, exploring different technologies, languages, libraries, etc. What would be best? Should I settle down more and spend time on becoming an expert in one or two programming fields, or should I be more of a jack of all trades, trying out all kinds of new technologies, languages, programming methods, etc.? I'm guessing that somewhere in the middle would be best. I'm always amazed at how many developers are able to create one or two projects, and develop on them for years. What techniques do you guys employ to help you stay focused on a project?

  I got a brain teaser for you - it's not as simple as it sounds so please read and try to solve the issue. Before you ask if it's homework - it's not! I just wish to see if there's an elegant way of solving this. Here's the issue: X-number of friends want's to go to the cinema and wish to be seated in the best available groups. Best case is that everyone sits together and worst case is that everyone sits alone. Fewer groups are preferred over more groups. Sitting alone is least preferred. Input is the number of people going to the cinema and output should be an array of integer arrays that contains: Ordered combinations (most preferred are first) Number of people in each group Below are some examples of number of people going to the cinema and a list of preferred combinations these people can be seated: 1 person: 1 2 persons: 2, 1+1 3 persons: 3, 2+1, 1+1+1 4 persons: 4, 2+2, 3+1, 2+1+1, 1+1+1+1 5 persons: 5, 3+2, 4+1, 2+2+1, 3+1+1, 2+1+1+1, 1+1+1+1+1 6 persons: 6, 3+3, 4+2, 2+2+2, 5+1, 3+2+1, 2+2+1+1, 2+1+1+1+1, 1+1+1+1+1+1 Example with more than 7 persons explodes in combinations but I think you get the point by now.   i just upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.10 and i noticed that i get this message The location is not a folder whenever i try to access a mounted media (USB or even my other partitions). I am now unable to view content on my usb pendrive or other partitions. already tried sudo apt-get remove exo-utils with no luck because it says it is not installed. Can anyone help me?   Possible Duplicate: How to revert to GNOME Classic? I don't like unity so I tried Ubuntu Gnome Remix 12.10. But I feel disappointed too. - No right click on desktop. (I know there is a way to enable it). - No icon on desktop. - I want to have "applications", "palces", "systems" on top panel as before. It just takes much more steps to arrive where I want to go in default gnome 3 settings. - It seems to me that for some applications, when it is maximalized, there is no close buttons or "restore to previous size" button. In fact, it has no title bar in this case, so I can't drag the title bar to restore its previous size and move the window. So I got 3 questions here: (for those who like the way gnome work before) What difference between gnome2 and gnome3 that you prefer the way it works in gnome2? How do you change it to work in the gnome2 way? I don't like the appearance in gnome3. For those who have tried to make your gnome3 looks good, could you share how you customize your gnome3 appearance? (this is for chatting only, not a real question) Why all the main OS (Windows, Mac, Some Linux) want to integrate Desktop and Tablet with focus on Tablet? (Which means that when it is installed on a desktop, it still has tablet appearance, which makes things strange.) Do they think the personal desktop PC will become less and less?
