• Downsides of using Lubuntu on a good computer [closed]

  I have a simple question but yet, hard to find any anwser on it. Are there any downsides of using Lubuntu on a good laptop ? Ihe one I purchased would run Ubuntu really good, but I like the look & feel of Lubuntu. I mainly use it to code or watch movie / listen music, usually a load of applications opened at the same time, 20+ tabs on multiple web browser, etc.. Since Lubuntu is lightweight, i wonder if it lacks of some useful functions or something like that.

• Convert video files for home IIS server [closed]

  I am finally learning to set up an IIS server (personal use only) and I thought it would be cool to have some videos on it for me to watch when I am away from home. Since I'm usually on 3G (iPhone) or work wifi, I'd like to convert them to an optimal format that will stream fast. The video files are mostly avi and mp4 (from 30 minutes to 2 hours in length). What would be an easy and fast way to go about doing this? Thanks.

• My sound is not working, so I'm going to reinstall FYI [closed]

  I've had trouble getting the sound to work in Ubuntu 12.04 I'm running an Acer Aspire 5739g laptop. This is using a clean install. This wasn't a problem when ubuntu first installed. Rather, it was when I ran the updates that it stopped working. I already tried the suggestions on the ubuntu sites and other similar queries, and they haven't fixed it. Something in the updates is making my sound not work. Edit: It turns out that this might be a bug (the sound issue, first paragraph). After reinstall, it happened again (it's not caused by updates at all, or any software, because I fixed it now w/o reinstall). It seems like I replicated it as follows: I changed auto-hide in the behavior tab of Appearance settings by turning it on, and setting the sensitivity to below the recommended setting. Then instead of restarting, I just logged out and back in. The sound stopped working again. I set the behavior settings to default, restarted, and now it's back to normal. Not sure if it's due to only logging out (and not restarting) or b/c I set my sensitivity to a low setting. Not sure if this helps anyone, but thought I'd mention it.

Pretty marginal on the close there... I read the FAQ and I felt list this could be a common issue for webmasters, its defiantly not a coding questions so stackoverflow is out of the question and its not a broad question its focused on one particular aspect of being a webmaster.

I recently realized that the "portable" version of MinGW I was using off my USB drive was actually interfering with a locally installed version of MinGW, so sometimes even the tools you think are portable, aren't.   Hi there i installed moodle to a directory with softaculous as it doesn't allow installing to subdomain, after install I created a subdomain and pointed the destination (of subdomain) to previously created moodle directory, now when I go to the subdomain.example.com it says Incorrect access detected, this server may be accessed only through "http://example.com/moodle" address, sorry. Please notify server administrator. Any suggestions much appreciated! I must be doing something wrong, when installing it was very similar to these instructions

• How hard it will be for the programmer to learn MS SSRS adn SSIS [closed]

  I have a programming background in php/python/java for 5 years and I know MySQL and PostgreSQL. Currently in our company the MSQL Business Intelligence person is leaving his job in 4 months. I am thinking of trying to go to his place, at least try as I want to move in Business Intelligence field in SSRS and SSIS. I just want to know that is it possible for me to get my head around those things in 4 months because I have no idea how they work and how hard it will be for me to pick up those things. Can I do that? I just want to know from experienced people if I can move towards that field? At least how should I start? In my area there are shortages of person, so once I know the stuff I can get into junior jobs easily but I want to know from experienced people.

• Thinking about open-sourcing quiz project [closed]

  I was thinking about starting an open source project. I have a few projects that might work ok as an open project but thought I might dip my toe into the water with a simple quiz project. The idea is you can add questions to a quiz, arrange questions by topic, difficulty or location. Users would hopefully get an interesting quiz, tuned to their ability. At the end they'd get a score and hopefully they might provide either some feedback on the questions or even supply a few questions of their own. I couldn't see a similar project (fame's last words). I have a basic version of the project that gives the user a bunch of questions to answer in 10 minutes. It doesn't currently group the questions into topics, and no feedback is taken. I've also been told the graphical questions don't work on Ipads for some reason. Would this be a suitable project to go open source? I did find various quiz's out there but all seemed rather narrowly focused. I really wanted something that could cover any type of question on any type of subject. I prefer to keep the questions in MySQL but I could see how this might make it more difficult for others to get on board - should I move to data files? On searching on internet, it is mentioned that open the CppUnitLibraries.dsw project under cppunit-cvs-repo-archive\cppunit\src folder but the same file is existing with name "CppUnitLibraries.dsw,v" and on changing its extension to .dsw and on opening again it displays the message invalid project file.

  I'm not sure if this is the right place but I am after some general advice on a feature I am looking to implement on my website. The website I have is a Wedding Directory. Here, companies can advertise in the form of a directory listing. This listing contains the company details - such as what they do and how you can contact them. There are three packages available - Basic package is free and Silver and Gold packages are charged for. Now in order to further enhance the directory, I want to enable customer reviews for each listing. This is basically whereby customers who have used a particular company's service can write a review (and rate out of 5) of their experience. The dilemma I face is that if customers are to be paying for their listings then surely they will expect to not have content on their listing that would tarnish their reputation (i.e. negative reviews). But at the same time I want to be impartial and help my site visitors to make informed choices on which companies to book when arranging their weddings. Of course I will exercise my ability to remove offensive or fake reviews but I do not want to be removing reviews just to satisfy my clients. Suppose a client pays me a premium fee to have their listing on my front page and at the top of the listings. Now suppose that client gets lost of negative reviews - the fact that they have increased visibility means that they will also get increased bad publicity. This in turn means they won't renew their package and will most likely request the listing to be taken down. So, how can I get the right balance here and keep everyone happy?

It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

• Ubuntu 12.10 hotkeys not working properly [closed]

  A couple of weeks ago, I ran a distribution upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10. Unfortunately, something has seemed to happen with the hotkeys on the system. At first, I thought that maybe this was just a glitch with the global hotkeys. That didn't turn out to be the case, as the custom hotkey I added into the Ubuntu settings works for my editor. The only default hotkey that seems to have a problem launching is CTRL+ALT+T (Terminal). This wasn't such a big issue to begin with, because I can always just drag the Terminal to my launcher and launch it from there. However, I was on Chrome earlier and tried to do SHIFT+CTRL+DEL to clear the history and it failed. I then tried to do SHIFT+ESC, just to see if the hotkey for the task manager would work.. and it did. I also thought it could be something with the "CTRL" key, since SHIFT+ESC works, but SHIFT+CTRL+DEL doesn't. That didn't turn out to be the case either, as keys like CTRL+ALT+DEL (logout) work perfectly fine. Not quite sure how to go about this, and I haven't found any errors in any of /var/log that raises any suspicion.

  Possible Duplicate: Data input validation - Where? How much? I'm a new PHP developer and am into Powershell quite a bit but this question is language agnostic. I've been questioning my code quite a bit lately thinking about how many nets I should setup to catch exceptions, verify results, etc. I realize that I could go crazy trying to verify each and every line of code but at the same time I want the code as resilient as possible. I'm not talking about user input but verifying output from methods. Is there some standard or rule of thumb to go by when deciding when and where to do data validation?

• Performance-optimizing Oracle 10g on a server that is also a Tomcat JSP app server?

  I have inherited a simple RedHat 5 - 64bit platform. It has SCSI disks on RAID1, with 16GB of RAM. Double Core CPU. Oracle 10g, Release 2. This would be a decent platform for running the DB only, perhaps, but the same server in an "A-A mode" clustering (very simple) also runs Tomcat and there are several Java servlets running on this. Sadly there is no caching platform etc. We only use an external CDN for some html caching. I am personally more familiar with web environments on the LAMPP platform (apache, php, mysql, postgresql). PROBLEM: Because the server has both Tomcat JSP/Java and Oracle 10g running on the same server, with no caching, I have some issues of the server going down. Often, sadly. QUESTION: What are my options in terms of improving performance of all these different apps? Connection Pooling? Example, in Postgresql world we have PgBouncer, which really helps things. Does Oracle have something similar? Or is there a famous Java-based external pooler that people use in production environments? (I'm not familiar with Java) Any "SQL cache" as in the MySQL and Postgresql world? Any other kind of application cache, as "APC" or "eAccelarator" in the PHP world? The "OSCache" stuff from the Java world (JSP thingie I found on Google: http://onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2005/01/05/jspcache.html?page=2) ... What else? Sorry if this is a noob question. I have googled and googled, but problem is I don't know what to google for, other than the broad general concepts above. So if not full answers, I would even appreciate basic pointers and I am happy to JFGI myself. Thanks!

  I looked at all sites of SO and couldn't find any suitable to ask this question but posting here as nearest match to scenario After 1 months research I basically give up on getting all URL's from a search results programmatically, I looked at Google Search API to find a way to get millions of search results "URL's" to be specific to a text file or something relative but no success, but I am 100% there must be a way or trick of doing it. Real Question : Is there anyway programmatically or manually I can get 1000+ search results (URLs using search query e.g. "Apple" returns million of results on google and I want as much as possible URLs of them results in a text file)

• Cannot create a new VS data connection in Server Explorer

  I have a local instance of SQL Server 2008 express edition running on my development PC. I'm trying to create a new data connection through Visual Studio Server Explorer. The steps are the following: Right click the "Data Connections" node = Choose Data Source. I select "Microsoft SQL Server" as the data source. The "Add Connection" dialog window appears. I select my local server instance = "Test connection" works fine. I select "AdventureWorks" as the database name = "Test connection" works fine. Next I hit the "Ok" button = Error message: "This server version is not supported. Only servers up to MS SQL Server 2005 are supported." I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition. The target framework of the application is ".NET framework 3.5". I have a reference to System.Data (framework v2.0) and cannot find another version of the assembly on my system. Am I referencing the wrong assembly? How can I fix this problem?

  I own a domain, let's call it mydomain.com. I need to host the following off it: forums.mydomain.com www.mydomain.com blog.mydomain.com objects.mydomain.com I believe I can get 5 static IPs. I plan on assigning one each to those four hosts. Then I need to adhoc create names, all below objects.mydomain.com. For instance: one.objects.mydomain.com two.objects.mydomain.com three.objects.mydomain.com I need to create these names programatically, and without human intervention. Preferably, they would not get their own IPs. They would use the IP of objects.mydomain.com. First question: Does this mean that I need to host my own DNS? Second question: I'm using Apache as a web server. What does the virtual host configuration look like?   Its been 2 years since graduating from uni and working in a IT solutions company as a programmer. My initial year was particularly exciting when we were trying to get a fresh product up to speed. The product has now gone live and are in the maintenance phase. My current day job involves merely bug fixing and also small designing/implementing change requests and also helping resolve issues faced from clients. Slowly I feel a little 'normal' in my role. I wonder how I can make myself stand out. (I work in a company of no more than 200 people) Or what should be the next step I take after 2 years doing programming? Thanks!

• External hard-drive is "clicking" when idle [closed]

  I'm struggling with a very annoying issue: My new hard-drive (Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB (HN-M101MBB) was build in an USB 3.0 external case (Lian Li EX-10QR) and formatted with ext4. When this hard-drive is connected to my Notebook via USB 2.0 it "klicks", the LED flashs too, every second, but only when it's idle! It stays silent, when something is copying or reading from it. But when this drive was formatted with ext3 or fat, it always remained silent. This also happens with a Western Digital WD10JPVT Scorpio Blue, but the "klicks" are even louder! System: 12.04 64-bit with Gnome-Shell. Any ideas how to approach this issue?
