• Read Song Title/Artist from a live audio stream with Silverlight 4?

  I have a SL4 project that is successfully streaming a great sounding WMA audio stream from a remote location. All of the MediaElement actions are straight forward. What I want to do is read the attributes that are passed as text along with the Audio stream. For instance the encoder of the stream embeds the title of the stream, the title of the song playing and the name of the artist for the current song. How would I pick this out using Silverlight 4 and then display it in a Label to the user? It sure would be easier than writing a bunch of web services to do the same thing. Windows Media Player and WinAmp all get the information I am just not seeing it in the MediaElement object collection.

• Memory efficient way of inserting an array of objects with Core Data

  I'm working on a piece of code for an iPhone application that fetches a bunch of data from a server and builds objects from it on the client. It ends up creating roughly 40,000 objects. They aren't displayed to the user, I just need to create instances of NSManagedObject and store them to persistent storage. Am I wrong in thinking that the only way to do this is to create a single object, then save the context? is it best to create the objects all at once, then somehow save them to the context after they're created and stored in some set or array? If so, can one show some example code for how this is done or point me in the direction to code where this is done? The objects themselves are relatively straight forward models with string or integer attributes and don't contain any complex relationships.

• Randomly getting a 500 error on my website

  I am randomly getting a 500 error on my websites, all of which are hosted on a shared server. It won't happen all the time, just randomly when I will refresh the page I will get a 500 error. It usually will come back after I refresh a few times. I've been reading about it and have heard that .htaccess files can cause this... I did recently start using an .htaccess file to tell my server to start using php 5. I got the code straight from the hosting company that I am with. This is what is in the .htaccess file: AddType x-mapp-php5 .php If anyone has any ideas as to what would be causing this, that would really help. Thanks!

• Filesize with SWFUpload and Amazon S3

  Hello all, I'm currently using SWFUpload to upload files to my S3 bucket. And it's working great. I'm using the script from a website here: http://www.anedix.com/news/article/50 Again, the upload to my S3 works fine, however, I've been running into an issue when attempting to upload larger files. It seems that I cannot upload anything over 50MB. I have tried this from both my webhost and locally, using my local testing environment. My question is this: When uploading with SWFUpload, it should be going straight to Amazon S3, correct? If so, then PHP settings such as MAX_UPLOAD_SIZE should not affect it? (Even though in my local environment, I've set it to 1024MB.) Essentially, what the script does is, shows that it's uploading the file (it takes the appropriate amount of time), redirects to the success page, and does not throw any errors. Any ideas on why this would be happening, or how I can troubleshoot this? Thanks!

  The definition of AudioBufferList looks weird to me… i guess my C is not so good struct AudioBufferList { UInt32 mNumberBuffers; AudioBuffer mBuffers[kVariableLengthArray]; }; typedef struct AudioBufferList AudioBufferList; Why AudioBuffer mBuffers[kVariableLengthArray]; and not AudioBuffer *mBuffers; ? kVariableLengthArray appears to be == 1. Eh? I think i have it working but would appreciate it if anyone could set me straight.

• Moving a point along a vector

  Hello- I have a point defined by x,y and a vector defined by heading, speed. I am attempting to move the point x,y along this vector, at a distance of 'speed'. Below is the code I am currently using: self.x += self.speed * cos(self.heading); self.y += self.speed * sin(self.heading); Heading can be any angle in a full circle - 0 to 2p (0-360 degrees). The problem is the above code: Only moves along the x or y axis when angle is 0-270 for example, when the avatar is facing the top-right corner (45 degrees relative), it moves straight up. Does not move at all when angle is 270-360 heading, speed, X and Y are all doubles, and heading is reported by the user touching a direction-pad in the lower corner. I know the heading is correct because the avatar rotates to the correct direction, it is just the actual movement I am having problems with. Thanks for any help - Chris

• How much overhead does a msg_send call incur?

  I'm attempting to piece together and run a list of tasks put together by a user. These task lists can be hundreds or thousand of items long. From what I know, the easiest and most obvious way would be to build an array and then iterate through them: NSArray *arrayOfTasks = .... init and fill with thousands of tasks for (id *eachTask in arrayOfTasks) { if ( eachTask && [eachTask respondsToSelector:@selector(execute)] ) [eachTask execute]; } For a desktop, this may be no problem, but for an iphone or ipad, this may be a problem. Is this a good way to go about it, or is there a faster way to accomplish the same thing? The reason why I'm asking about how much overhead a msg_send occurs is that I could also do a straight C implementation as well. For example, I could put together a linked list and use a block to handle the next task. Will I gain anything from that or is it really more trouble than its worth?

• python blocking sockets, send returns immediately

  Hi, I am writing a multithreaded socket application in Python using the socket module. the server listens for connections and when it gets one it spawns a thread for that socket. the server thread sends some data to the client. but the client is not yet ready to receive it. • Silverlight WCF method calls fails if WCF service is not running initially

  Quite simply I have a generic Silverlight 3.0 web page that is calling a Ping method on a WCF service. I do not have the WCF service running initially when I navigate to this Silverlight page. As expected I get a communication exception when I press the Silverlight button to call the Ping method, which I catch. Now if I start the WCF service and press the Ping button I still get the communication exception. How come? The other scenario is the WCF is running when I navigate to the SL page and the Ping method call works. I turn off the WCF service, ping method fails. Turn it back on and the ping method succeeds. How come if it's not running initially the ping method fails always? I could include some sample code if you'd like but this is just a real simple Hello World example using basichttpbinding, straight out the book. Thanks, Craig

• Notifying iFrame page from Firefox extension?

  I'm writing a Firefox extension and need to notify an iFrame page of certain events. The iFrame page is contained within a sidebar created by the extension, and this iFrame page is controlled by me. When I load the iFrame page, the extension code needs to send a notification and trigger something to happen within the iFrame page. To accomplish this, I'm creating an event from the extension Javascript and firing the event, which the iFrame page is listening to. Unfortunately, when invoking document.createEvent(), this error pops up (copied, with the quotes, straight out of Firebug): Operation is not supported" code: "9 Any clues on the error, or suggestions on how to trigger something in an iFrame page from the extension Javascript? • Get timestamp from Authenticode Signed files in .NET

  We need to verify that binary files are signed properly with digital signature (Authenticode). This can be achieved with signtool.exe pretty easily. However, we need an automatic way that also verifies signer name and timestamp. This is doable in native C++ with CryptQueryObject() API as shown in this wonderful sample: How To Get Information from Authenticode Signed Executables However we live in a managed world :) hence looking for C# solution to the same problem. Straight approach would be to pInvoke Crypt32.dll and all is done. But there is similar managed API in System.Security.Cryptography.X509Certificates Namespace. X509Certificate2 Class seems to provide some information but no timestamp. Now we came to the original question how can we get that timestamp of a digital signature in C Sharp?

• Update {node_counter} table programatically in drupal

  I currently use the statistics module (core) on my Drupal 6 install. This increments a count in the {node_counter} table every time the node is viewed, and this works. My question is - can I programmatically increment this counter as well? I am looking to achieve this when users interact with content created from views (say click a lightbox), so being able to update the table with AJAX would be ideal. I have done a quick search on d.o and there doesn't appear to be any modules that stick out straight away. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  Hi, I've been pulling my hair out trying to get some matrix calculations working properly and started to wonder. If I have the following: glPushMatrix(); float m[16]; glGetFloatv(GL_MODELVIEW_MATRIX, m); glPopMatrix(); What should I expect the values of m to equal? Currently I'm getting these values and I'm confused as to where they're coming from: -1, 0, 0, 0, 0, -0.6139, 0.7893522, 0, 0, 0.789352238, 0.61394, 0, 0, 0.0955992, -1.344529, 1, I'm assuming there is something which affects this, but I'm not sure what. Could anyone help? I've tried changing pretty much anything but everytime I push the matrix stack I always get this matrix straight away! I don't think this makes a difference but I'm using OpenGLES. • A strong case for WF

  Hi guys, I have struggled for so long to find a compelling use case for workflow (ie: WF) as against regular imperative programming. Each time I fall back to the conclusion that I should just leave WF out or defer getting into it until later. But I keep having this nagging feeling that there's something am missing. Does anyone know any book that truly makes a strong case for the Workflow way? The book has to (i) teach WF well, and (ii) show using appropriate use cases that WF made an implementation easy to do than if we just did our regular straight coding. I will appreciate it.

• Uninstall Mono from Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard

  I installed Mono on my iMac last night and I immidiately had a change of heart! I don't think Mono is ready for prime time. The Mono website says to run the following script to uninstall: #!/bin/sh -x #This script removes Mono from an OS X System. It must be run as root rm -r /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework rm -r /Library/Receipts/MonoFramework-SVN.pkg cd /usr/bin for i in `ls -al | grep Mono | awk '{print $9}'`; do rm ${i} done Has anyone had to uninstall Mono? Was it as straight forward as running the above script or do I have to do more? How messy was it? Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks

• NDepend query methods/types in framework assembly being used by other assemblies/types

  I am trying to determine which types or methods in a base framework assembly are being used by other assemblies in the application system. I cannot seem to find a straight-cut query to do that. What i have to do is first determine which assemblies are directly using the framework assembly, then manually list them in a second query SELECT TYPES FROM ASSEMBLIES "IBM.Data.DB2" WHERE IsDirectlyUsedBy "ASSEMBLY:FirstDirectUsedByAssebmly" OR IsDirectlyUsedBy "ASSEMBLY:SecondDirectUsedByAssebmly" OR IsDirectlyUsedBy "ASSEMBLY:ThirdDirectUsedByAssebmly" OR IsDirectlyUsedBy "ASSEMBLY:FourthDirectUsedByAssebmly" Is there a better/faster way to query for this? Additionally, the query results are focused on the matched types only. The Dependency graph or matrix exported only shows details of those. I do not know how to render a graph that shows those types or methods plus show the dependent types/methods from other assemblies that are consuming them?

  Using an NSPredicate for an array is rather straight forward using filteredArrayUsingPredicate:. How is this done for key-path values? Meaning, I have an array of objects (in this case, the objects are of the same type). The objects each have an instance variable called name. As per the documentation, it says to do the following: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat: @"ANY employees.firstName like 'Matthew'"]; Is that -also- used in filteredArrayUsingPredicate? What if I have an array of People objects? does that mean I would use: NSArray *allPeopleObjects; // pre-populated NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"ANY people.name like 'Foo'"]; NSArray *matching = [allPeopleObjects filteredArrayUsingPredicate:predicate]; Documentation is a bit lacking in that department.

• Acting on items in an array 1/3 at a time

  I have an array that has 9 items in it (it may also have 7, 10 or 11 items in it) $anArray = array(1=>'A',2=>'B',3=>'C',4=>'D',5=>'E',6=>'F',7=>'G',8=>'H',9=>'I'); I also have three variables: $A='A'; $B='B'; $C='C'; I need change the first 1/3 of the items in the array from what they are to $A ...the 2nd third to $B ...and the final third to $C Array([1]=>A [2]=>A [3]=>A [4]=>B [5]=>B [6]=>B [7]=>C [8]=>C [9]=>C) Is there an easy and straight-forward way of doing this? Right now I'm doing lots of foreach with counters, etc... and it seems like to much work.

• What's the best JSF implementation?

  Hey everyone, I currently have a medium size Java web application sitting on top of Spring MVC. As much as I like (no sarcasm) coding straight HTML, CSS and JS, it's not possible for me to develop as fast as I'd like. I'm looking at different RAD frameworks to speed up my development. I'm looking at JSF implementations and component libraries, Flex, GWT and a few others. As of now, Apache MyFaces (with ICEFaces) seems to be the front runner in my mind, but I'm curious to find out what you all think of that specific implementation and if the Sun implementation is any better? What's important to me is something that is stable, has an active community and that it doesn't look like there is another technology in the near future that is going to eclipse JSF (which would drive me to use a different RAD framework).   Hi folks, I'm trying to implement a "time ago" feature, for the displaying of items on a site. As I'm caching the pages I wish to use javascript in order to render the "time ago". Javascript knows local time and problably the Timezone of the local machine so I could play with that, but that would require to hard code the server's timezone. Therefore I'm trying to figure out a simple way to pass a ISO 8601 timestamp, in GMT time. Is there any simple and straight forward way for doing this? Help would be much appreciated! =)

• Debugging asp.net with firefox and visual studio.net - very slow compared to IE

  Debugging asp.net websites/web projects in visual studio.net 2005 with Firefox is loads slower than using IE. I've read something somewhere that there is a way of fixing this but i can't for the life of me find it again. Does anyone know what i'm on about and can point me in the right direction please? I prefer Firefox for debugging (firebug etc) hitting F5 when debugging with IE the browser launches really quickly and clicking around my web application is almost instant and when a breakpont is hit i get to my code straight away with no delays. hitting F5 when debugging with FireFox the browser launches really slowly (ok i have plugins that slow FF loading) but clicking around my web application is really really slow and when a breakpoint is hit it takes ages to break into code. i swear i've read something somewhere that there is a setting in Firefox (about:config maybe?) that when changed to some magic setting sorts all this out.

• Efficient algorithm for finding largest eigenpair of small general complex matrix

  I am looking for an efficient algorithm to find the largest eigenpair of a small, general (non-square, non-sparse, non-symmetric), complex matrix, A, of size m x n. By small I mean m and n is typically between 4 and 64 and usually around 16, but with m not equal to n. This problem is straight forward to solve with the general LAPACK SVD algorithms, i.e. gesvd or gesdd. However, as I am solving millions of these problems and only require the largest eigenpair, I am looking for a more efficient algorithm. Additionally, in my application the eigenvectors will generally be similar for all cases. This lead me to investigate Arnoldi iteration based methods, but I have neither found a good library nor algorithm that applies to my small general complex matrix. Is there an appropriate algorithm and/or library?

• MySqlDateTime to System.DateTime conversion

  Ok I'm very new to databases and C# in general, but I'm using a piece of code that exports dataset data to an Excel file, and its taking issue with the date/time format. I'm using the MySQL connector so the rowtype is MySql.Data.Types.MySqlDateTime. Is there any quick way to convert it into System.DateTime so I can slot it straight into the case statement? Here's a link to the code I used, I copied it verbatim so I've not copied and pasted it here. • Automatically call httpservice.send

  I have an application that displays the data from 3 xml files (auto generated from SQL table) using httpservices to get them. The first xml file is small and contains around 30 items, the second and thrid contain around 200-300 items each. The first dataset loads quickly and is invoked on creationComplete. The second and third are called from click events and take quite a few seconds to load. A user of the application will take at least 2-3 minutes reading the data from the first dataset so is there a way I can have the httpservice.send for the second and third xml files called automatically, straight after the first file has finished loading to be able to show the first dataset immediateley and get rid of the waiting times between dataset views. An answer doesnt need to be specific, just a point in the right direction would be great. All answers greatly appreciated Matt
