• Is it possible to create a flash movie from only actionscript?

  Hey Everyone, Currently I am mostly a PHP/Javascript/CSS/HTML applications programmer. But I would like to start learning how to create flash movies also. However, I do not want to spend the money to get CS4. Can I create flash movies from only Actionscript 3? Or would anyone recommend that I jump straight to air? All of the different adobe products, which do the same thing, confuse me. I just do not want to jump into it and then find out that I have to spend 900 dollars for the IDE. • Building a Com addin for Office 2000 / Office 2007

  I am struggling to find a straight forward guide to creating office addins using VSTO and VB.net. Specifically I would like to know how to be able to create a addin/ dll which can either be referenced from VBA in the form:- Addin.method(argument) or Addin.property = X Or which would install its own custom toolbars/ ribbon interface to an aspect of office for example Word. I've checked MSDN and in terms of legibility and usability of the explanations I have drawn a blank so far. I currently have a requirement to create at least one addin for Office 2000 to run and manipluate SQL and then a suite of addins for a customized Office 2007 (Word) set-up.

• Getting Unexpected '<' in simple less than greater than comparison

  I feel very very very silly posting this, but I can't find the answer. I've searched google and here. // originally values in a multi dimensional array, but used simple values // to rule out errors. $somenumber = 1; $anotherone=5; if ($somenumber < $res->shares < $anotherone ) { blah } Get the error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' Seems pretty simple and straight forward. Is there some weird thing that you can't compare multiple values? Do I have to explicitly type? It works in Perl. Which of course means that it has to work like this in everything else. ;)

  Hi all, Using DBI::DatabaseHandle#execute or DBI::DatabaseHandle#prepare it's not possible to run an sql script (with mutiple sql statments). • Scala 2.8 TreeMap and custom Ordering

  I'm switching from scala 2.7 and ordered to scala 2.8 and using ordering. It looks quite straight forward but I was wondering could I make it a little less verbose. For example: scala> case class A(i: Int) defined class A scala> object A extends Ordering[A] { def compare(o1: A, o2: A) = o1.i - o2.i} defined module A If I then try to create a TreeMap I get an error scala> new collection.immutable.TreeMap[A, String]() <console>:10: error: could not find implicit value for parameter ordering: Ordering[A] new collection.immutable.TreeMap[A, String]() ^ However if I explicitly specify the object A as the ordering it works fine. scala> new collection.immutable.TreeMap[A, String]()(A) res34: scala.collection.immutable.TreeMap[A,String] = Map() Do I always have to explicitly specify the ordering or is there a shorter format? • Re-send POST request easily - what tools?

  I am looking for an easy way to re-send POST request to the server within the browser mainly for debug purposes. Say you have a XHR request which contains POST parameters that is to be send to the server. After having changed the script on the server side, you would like to resent the very same request for analyzing the output. What tool could help? I guess it is a browser's extension. I already tried extension Tamper Data for Firefox which does the job as you can "Replay in browser". But for my taste, it is not enough straight forward, as there are 3 - 4 clicks to get the result of the request. Unfortunately, curl would not be suitable for my needs as my application has a session's cookie.

• ctags doesn't work when class is defined like "class Gem::SystemExitException"

  You can define a class in a namespace like this class Gem class SystemExitException end end or class Gem::SystemExitException end When code uses first method of class definition, ctags indexes the class definition like this: SystemExitException test_class.rb /^ class SystemExitException$/;" c class:Gem With the second way, ctags indexes it like this: Gem rubygems/exceptions.rb /^class Gem::SystemExitException < SystemExit$/;" c The problem with the second way is that you can't put your cursor (in vim) over a reference to "Gem::SystemExitException" and have that jump straight to the class definition. Your only recourse is to page through all the (110!) class definitions that start with "Gem::" and find the one you're looking for. Does anyone know of a workaround? Maybe I should report this to the maintainer of ctags?

  I'm currently trying to scrape a website that has fairly poorly-formatted HTML (often missing closing tags, no use of classes or ids so it's incredibly difficult to go straight to the element you want, etc.). I've been using BeautifulSoup with some success so far but every once and a while (though quite rarely), I run into a page where BeautifulSoup creates the HTML tree a bit differently from (for example) Firefox or Webkit. While this is understandable as the formatting of the HTML leaves this ambiguous, if I were able to get the same parse tree as Firefox or Webkit produces I would be able to parse things much more easily. The problems are usually something like the site opens a <b> tag twice and when BeautifulSoup sees the second <b> tag, it immediately closes the first while Firefox and Webkit nest the <b> tags. Is there a web scraping library for Python (or even any other language (I'm getting desperate)) that can reproduce the parse tree generated by Firefox or WebKit (or at least get closer than BeautifulSoup in cases of ambiguity).

• Is this a good centralized DVCS workflow?

  I'm leaning toward using Mercurial, coming from Subversion, and I'd like to maintain a centralized workflow like I had with Subversion. Here is what I am thinking: stable (clone on server) default (branch) development (clone on server) default (branch) bugs (branch) developer1 (clone on local machine) developer2 (clone on local machine) developer3 (clone on local machine) feature1 (branch) developer3 (clone on local machine) feature2 (branch) developer1 (clone on local machine) developer2 (clone on local machine) As far as branches vs. clones is concerned, does this workflow sense? Do I have things straight? Also, the 'stable' clone IS the release. Does it make sense for the 'default' branch to be the release and what all other branches are ultimately merged into?

• jquery IE Fadein and Fadeout Opacity

  Hi Guys, I am getting this weird problem in IE with a CSS Overlay I am applying for a lightbox. Basically, I use fadein and fadeout for jquery - the problem is that everything works fine EXCEPT in IE. In IE - I get no fadein - rather it just goes straight to opacity background. On fadeout - it removes the "opacity" for < 1 sec second and renders the page a "solid color" before removing the overlay. Anyone know how to fix this bug ? Its really annoying - I am using all the correct filters etc its just the fadein and fadeout in IE ? Thx

• what is the global.asax Application_Start equivalent when using WAS in IIS7

  Hi I'd like to use the netTcpBinding for my WCF application which is currently hosted in IIS7, which means configuring it to use WAS instead. This is fairly straight forward however, my application previously made use of the Application_Start event in the global.asax file. I do not require access to the httpContext(which I understand access has been removed in IIS7), however I would still like to hook into the start or init methods? Does an equivalent exist when hosting an application in WAS as apposed to IIS7? Using classic mode is not an option(again I'm not interested in the httpcontext and this only appears to work if using an http binding) - and I've seen an example of putting a static class instide the app_code folder which looks like a horrible hack.

• Using my cell phone as remote control for PC via Bluetooth/Java

  I've got a PC and a Samsung Eternity (that's a cell phone). I'd like to use my Eternity as remote control for my PC. Here's how I think I have to go about it: Write a desktop app (server) that accepts a connection from my cell. Write an app (client) for my cell through which I can establish a connection to the server and send commands to it. The server then executes the commands (e.g. adjust volume, pause/resume movie) Thoughts on that? Spot on or way off? Regarding the Eternity: What's a good way to get started with that? I'm guessing that I'll have to get the SDK. Does anyone have a good place to start/tutorial for that? Regarding the server: Does Java come with Bluetooth connectivity straight out of the box or do I need to fetch a library for that from somewhere? If so, from where? All help is much appreciated :)

• Bash script — determine if file modified?

  I have a Bash script that repeatedly copies files every 5 seconds. But this is a touch overkill as usually there is no change. I know about the Linux command watch but as this script will be used on OS X computers (which don’t have watch, and I don’t want to make everyone install macports) I need to be able to check if a file is modified or not with straight Bash code. Should I be checking the file modified time? How can I do that? Edit: I was hoping to expand my script to do more than just copy the file, if it detected a change. So is there a pure-bash way to do this?

This details cannot be stored on server in any form due to security related policies. i got 2 approaches to handle this situation, 1. create hidden parameter file with login details and limit the access to owner. again the implication is i cannot store login data in any format on server 2. Create the user as OS authenticated and straight away login into sql without any userid/password I am not able to figure out risks involved in 2nd approach which u experienced folks could have come across. let me know if there is any other approach to handle password leakage issue

• How to execute a command from with in MSI?

  Hi, I have a installation setup with works like this: /exec.exe /some-command This whole setup is located on a shared disk to which my target machine have access to. All i want is to create a small MSI wrapper that basically executes the above command. I don't need to any other fancy things? I looked up on the web; there are tools that create MSI for you but they generate huge amount of other things with them as well. My need is very simple and straight forward.   I would like to convert doc/docx documents to semantic HTML. Some wishes/requirements: Semantic HTML such that headers in the document are <h1>, <h2> etc., tables are <table> and so forth. Should preferably be possible to handle headings, lists, tables and images. Graphs and math formulas is a nice extra. • Doesn't have to be converted straight from doc/docx to html, could use an intermediary format, such as xml or docbook. • Should work programatically, and with large number of documents. The closest thing to a solution I've found so far is http://holloway.co.nz/docvert/index.html, but unfortunately there are many a few bugs, small user base and it can't handle a lot of documents. More of a proof of concept.

• How do I do a postback to a CGI service

  I am building a C# client for a CGI service (not sure what its called exactly). It accepts a bunch of XML and spits out a response. I have tested it straight in Firefox and it works (see below). • Replacing xcode with macports software

  I have been trying to replace everything in xcode with stuff I can get from macports. So far, I installed xcode, then macports, then used macports to install gcc, gcc_select, gmake, elf-bintools, bintools, arm-bintools (just to be sure I replaced all the bintools), and then uninstalled all of xcode. I then linked /usr/bin/make with /opt/local/bin/gmake and used gcc_select to select gcc44--the one from macports. I also exported all the bintool executable paths into the .profile path. I was sure this would work (although I should have known better after working on it for 48 hours straight), but nothing will configure, and the log files all have the common error: :info:configure configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables I have a feeling it has something to do with libraries, but I am really not sure. I use a mac 10.5.8. If this is truely 'impossible', what parts of xcode to I need for macports to work? For example, I can uninstall the xcode folder without a problem.

  Is there a way to display the output of a sqlplus command without having to first issue the spool off command? I am spooling the results of a sqlplus session to a file while at the same time tailing the file. The reason for this is that for table with very long rows the format is easier to look at from a file. The problem is to see the output i have to issue the spool off command everytime i run a command in sqlplus. Can i configure sqlplus so that after i have issued the spool command all the output is viewable straight away on the file. (Formating the way the rows are displayed on the screen is not an option. ) THanks

• Best Java 'framework' for LOW-END 3D Graphics?

  I've made my share of 2D games on various platforms but I have never developed a 3D game. I want to make a small "mmorpg". I already made my server in python and it works just fine with my flash 2D game but I decided I want to step it up and try out 3D. I want to make a 3D game for the web browser and I think Java might be a good choice for this. So basically I'm just looking for a straight forward and well documents 'framework' to make LOW-END 3D games. Keep in mind that I will be targeting peoples with very low-end PC's (plus my 3d modeling skills aren't great so I wouldn't mind hiding it somewhat, haha)

• Actionscrips/Flex4: Display cut-off datapoints differently in LineChart

  Dear Sirs, The issue arises when the user selects a range on the linechart that cuts off datapoints. When this happens, I would like the chart to tell the user somehow that there are data points three, just outside the range, perhaps by drawing a straight line across the top or bottom of the graph.
