• SQL Server CE 3.5 SP1 Stored Procedures

  I have been tasked with taking an existing WinForms application and modifying it to work in an "occasionally-connected" mode. This was to be achieved with SQL Server CE 3.5 on a user's laptop and sync the server and client either via SQL Server Merge Replication or utilizing Microsoft's Sync Framework. Currently, the application connects to our SQL Server and retrieves, inserts, updates data using stored procedures. I have read that SQL Server CE does not support stored procedures. Does this mean that all my stored procedures will need to be converted to straight SQL statements, either in my code or as a query inside a tableadapter? If this is true, what are my alternatives?

• Easiest way of checking if a string consists of unique characters?

  I need to check in Java if a word consists of unique letters (case insensitive). As straight solution is boring, I came up with: For every char in a string check if indexOf(char) == lastIndexOf(char). Add all chars to HashSet and check if set size == string length. Convert a string to a char array, sort it alphabetically, loop through array elements and check if c[i] == c[i+1]. Currently I like #2 the most, seems like the easiest way. Any other interesting solutions?

  I am looking for a way to retrieve the style from an element that has a style set upon it by the style tag. <style> #box {width: 100px;} </style> In the body <div id="box"></div> I'm looking for straight javascript without the use of libraries. I tried the following, but keep receiving blanks: alert (document.getElementById("box").style.width); alert (document.getElementById("box").style.getPropertyValue("width")); I noticed that I'm only able to use the above if I have set the style using javascript, but unable to with the style tags.

• Load Excel data into Linux / wxWidgets C++ application?

  I'm using wxWidgets to write cross-plafrom applications. In one of applications I need to be able to load data from Microsoft Excel (.xls) files, but I need this to work on Linux as well, so I assume I cannot use OLE or whatever technology is available on Windows. I see that there are many open source programs that can read excel files (OpenOffice, KOffice, etc.), so I wonder if there is some library that I could use? Excel files it needs to support are very simple, straight tabular data. I don't need to extract any formatting except column/row position and the data itself.

• Lucene.Net memory consumption and slow search when too many clauses used

  I have a DB having text file attributes and text file primary key IDs and indexed around 1 million text files along with their IDs (primary keys in DB). Now, I am searching at two levels. First is straight forward DB search, where i get primary keys as result (roughly 2 or 3 million IDs) Then i make a Boolean query for instance as following +Text:"test*" +(pkID:1 pkID:4 pkID:100 pkID:115 pkID:1041 .... ) and search it in my Index file. The problem is that such query (having 2 million clauses) takes toooooo much time to give result and consumes reallly too much memory.... Is there any optimization solution for this problem ?

• Jquery load() help

  Hi. I am creating a portfolio page for m personal site. I have a slider with approx 20 anchors that link to projects I have worked on, each one contains a client logo that when clicked should load some html content then fade that content into a container div on the same page. I have been advised to use the JQuery method load() which seems straight forward. The question I have is do I have to repeat the following code for each of the 20 anchors as the url is different for each one or is there a more efficient way? $('a#project1').click(function() { $('#work').load('ajax/project1.html'); } Also would I have to use the unload() method first to ensure the div I am loading into is empty?   I'm looking to write a Truth Table Generator as a personal project. There are several web-based online ones here and here. (Example screenshot of an existing Truth Table Generator) I have the following questions: How should I go about parsing expressions like: ((P = Q) & (Q = R)) = (P = R) Should I use a parser generator like ANTLr or YACC, or use straight regular expressions? Once I have the expression parsed, how should I go about generating the truth table? Each section of the expression needs to be divided up into its smallest components and re-built from the left side of the table to the right. How would I evaluate something like that? Can anyone provide me with tips concerning the parsing of these arbitrary expressions and eventually evaluating the parsed expression?

• Design for tagging system in GAE-J

  I need a simple tagging system in GAE-J. As I see it, the entity that is being tagged should have a collection of keys referring to the tags with which it's associated. A tag entity should simply contain the tag string itself, and a collection of keys pointing to the entities associated with the tag. When an entity's list of tags is altered, the system will create a new tag if the tag is unknown, and then append the entity's key to that tag's key collection. If the tag already exists, then the entity's key is simply appended to the tag's key collection. This seems relatively straight-forward and uncontroversial to me, but I would like some feedback on this design, just to be sure.

  If the array was null-terminated this would be pretty straight forward: unsigned char u_array[4] = { 'a', 's', 'd', '\0' }; std::string str = reinterpret_cast<char*>(u_array); std::cout << "-> " << str << std::endl; However, I wonder what is the most appropriate way to copy a non null-terminated unsigned char array, like the following: unsigned char u_array[4] = { 'a', 's', 'd', 'f' }; into a std::string. Is there any way to do it without iterating over the unsigned char array? Thank you all.

• Handling Custom Protocols

  I'm looking to respond to an event from a web browser, hopefully any web browser. I'm working solely on windows and I came to the conclusion a custom protocol (I.E. myprot://collection/of/strings) is the best approach here (any objections?). But, handling an instance of this protocol seems to be a little less straight-forward. All I need is that collection of strings auto-magically passed to my already running application! (the app will only respond to these links while in a specific waiting state) So answer me this, if you can, Whats the 'popular' method of handling them or better yet Whats the 'best' (subjective - I know) way to do it? Although your answers don't need to be specific to my language, I am using Delphi for development. Thanks!

• nHibernate query looking for the related object's related object

  I have an nHibernate querie issue that looks quite straight forward, but I can't seem to get my head around it! I am creating some simple example classes to illustrate my problem: public class Car { public int Id { get; set; } public IList<Interior> InteriorParts { get; set; } } public class Interior { public int Id { get; set; } public InteriorProducer Producer { get; set; } } public class InteriorProducer { public int Id { get; set; } } Now to the query: I have the id of the InteriorProducer, but need to get a list of Cars where the interior have been produced by the interior producer. So in a simple, pseudo SQL, it looks something like this: select cars where car.InteriorParts.Producer.Id = Id I have a really hard time getting my head around this to create an nHibernate query. • Reading Ontology with Jena, feeding it with RDF triples, and producing correct RDF string output.

  Hi, I have an ontology, which I read in with Jena to help me scrape some RDFa triples from a website. I don't currently store these triples in a Jena model, but that is fairly straight forward to do, its on my to do next list. The area I am struggling with, though, is to get Jena to output correct RDF for the ontology I have. The ontology uses Owl and RDFS definitions, but when I pass some example triples into the model, they don't appear correctly. Almost as if it doesn't know anything about the ontology. The output is, however, still valid RDF, just it's not coming out in the form I was hoping for. Am I correct in thinking that Jena should be able to produce well written RDF (not just valid) about the triples I have collected, based on the ontology or does this out stretch what it is capable of? • Passing variables to callback functions

  I am trying to write a jQuery plugin, that can be applied to a selector. Within this plugin, there are multiple calls to webservices, where callback methods are required. The problem I am having is maintaining the current context item in the each loop of the selector. (function($){ $.fn.myMethod = function(){ return this.each(function(){ var c = $(this); $.api.methodToCall("", CallbackFunction); }); }; function CallbackFunction(data, result){ // do stuff based on c } })(jQuery); Normally, you would provide the callback function straight away, which allows me to access c, however within the callback function, there potentially is another api call, so it would start to get messy. Is there any way to do this?

  Trying to get my project updated to MVC3, something I just can't find: I have a simple datatype of ENUMS: public enum States() { AL,AK,AZ,...WY } Which I want to use as a DropDown/SelectList in my view of a model that contains this datatype: public class FormModel() { public States State {get; set;} } Pretty straight forward: when I go to use the auto-generate view for this partial class, it ignores this type. I need a simple select list that sets the value of the enum as the selected item when I hit submit and process via my AJAX - JSON POST Method. And than the view (???!): <div class="editor-field"> @Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.State, model => model.States) </div> thanks in advance for the advice!

• Why is this if statement failing?

  I'm working on an existing class that is two steps derived from System.Windows.Forms.Combo box. The class overrides the Text property thus: public override string Text { get { return this.AccessibilityObject.Value; } set { if (base.Text != value) { base.Text = value; } } } The reason given for that "get" is this MS bug: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814346 However, I'm more interested in the fact that the "if" doesn't work. There are times where "base.Text != value" is true and yet pressing F10 steps straight to the closing } of the "set" and the Text property is not changed. I've seen this both by just checking values in the debugger, and putting a conditional breakpoint on that only breaks when the "if" statement's predicate is true. How on earth can "if" go wrong? The class between this and ComboBox doesn't touch the Text property. The bug above shouldn't really be affecting anything - it says it's fixed in VS2005. Is the debugger showing different values than the program itself sees?

  lastly I've been feeling like jquery is slowly becoming the defacto standard in js libraries I might be wrong!) or at least that is more active than the rest of the frameworks... for example I've been looking for a fine open source calendar like componente and found http://fullcalendar.vinsol.com/ we've been using prototype for very little things, like its selector capabilities ($ function as a shortcut for document.getElementById, mainly), executing some piece of js when the page is loaded and to issue some very simple ajax calls. so I guess the migration should be quite straight forward, but I'd like to know the pros / cons of migrating to prototype... on the other hand, I guess that having both of them together is not a good choice, specially taking into account that the migration should be quite simple... am I right? saludos sas

We have the ideas written down like 100's of them (yes we are choosing best and easy among them first). My friend does the layout design and arranging things , and my part is coding and server management. The little problem i am facing is lack of experience in planing a project. What i do is, I just start the code straight away and along with code I make DB, like when i need a table i make it. I know this is very bad approach for a medium sized project. Here at stackoverflow i saw lots of experienced coders. Need to learn a lot from you guys :) . So what are the guidelines for good webcrawler 'Etiquette'? • Semantic Fish-eye zoom on table cells in UIKit?

  How would I go about implementing a table view that looks and works something as illustrated in the link below, with UIKit for the iPhone? http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4177/uifisheyeview.png I was thinking of using UITableView, and was looking a bit at the UITableViewDelegate methods tableView:willDisplayCell:forRowAtIndexPath: tableView:heightForRowAtIndexPath: But it seems as the UITableView will modify the cell frames after these methods are called and just before the cells are drawn? Maybe skipping the UITableView and go straight for some subclassing of a UIScrollView would be a better approach? So my question is basically that I would just like some overall thought in what might be the best ways to use existing UIKit components to implement this type of table view.

• Can I see shader preprocessor output?

  I am using #defines, which I pass runtime to my shader sources based on program state, to optimize my huge shaders to be less complex. I would like to write the optimized shader to a file so that next time I run my program, I do not have to pass the #defines again, but I can straight compile the optimized shaders during program startup because now I know what kind of shaders by program needs. Is there a way to get the result from shader preprocessor? I can of course store the #define values to a file and based on that compile the shaders during program startup but that would not be as elegant.

  I have created a Web Control in ASP for use in integrating with Telligent CommunityServer. The control is written in ASP with some 10 lines of C# backend for controlling visibility of the UI elements based on permissions, but I'd say 90% of the functionality is straight-up Javascript. The control works beautifully, until you drop two instances of the Control on the same page--since they reference the exact same Javascript functions, only one control works. How can I take this functionality that I have, this 1200 lines of Javascript, and make it so that each instance of the control can reference its each unique instance of Javascript?

• Best implementation for MySQL replication with Rails 3?

  We're looking at potentially setting up replication for our primary MySQL database, and while setting up the replication seems pretty straight-forward, the application implementation seems a bit murkier. My first idea would be to set up a master-slave configuration and RW-splitting, with all write queries (CREATE, INSERT, UPDATE) going to master, and all read queries (SELECT) going to slave. Having read up on it, it seems that there are essentially two options for how to implement this with our app: Using an independent middleware layer for all MySQL connections, such as MySQL proxy or DBSlayer. However, the former is in Alpha and the latter has limited documentation. Using a Ruby-based gem/plugin, such as Octopus to achieve RW-splitting in the framework. If we wanted to go with a master-slave setup, what you recommend moving forward? The other thought I've had was to use a master-master configuration, but am unsure about the implementation of such a setup. Thoughts?

• Android: Deciding between SurfaceView and OpenGL (GLSurfaceView)

  Is there a way to decide up front based on the expected complexity of a game/app in the planning phase whether to use regular Canvas drawing in a SurfaceView or to go with OpenGL? I've been playing around with a Canvas and only need 2D movement, and on a fairly new phone I'm getting pretty decent performance with a bunch of primitive objects and a few bitmaps running around the screen on a solid background. Is it fair to say that if I'm going to be drawing background images and increasing the number of objects being moved and drawn on top of them that I should go straight to OpenGL?

• How to generate one large dependency map for the whole project that builds with makefiles?

  I have a gigantic project that is built using makefiles. Running make at the root of the project takes over 20 minutes when no files have changed (i.e. just traversing the project and checking for updated files). I'd like to create a dependency map that will tell me which directories I need to run 'make' in based on the file(s) changed. I already have a list of updated files that I can get from my version control system, and I'd like to skip the 20 minutes of traversing and get straight to the locations that do need to be recompiled. The project has a mix of several languages and custom tools, so this would ideally be language-independent (i.e. it would only process all makefiles to generate dependencies). I'll settle for a C/C++-specific solution, too, as the majority of the project is in C++. The project is built on Linux.
