  It's SQL Server Geek Week once again! Every year at the PASS Summit the SQL Server faithful descend on the city of choice for the annual Summit, and this year it's Charlotte, North Carolina. This was the third installment of the premier Java conference for the Balkan region, having three separate tracks for Java, the Cloud and Mobile. • Setting up programs to startup at login

  Have a new ponder hoping someone can answer. Keep in mind I am very new at linux and Ubuntu 14.04. What I would like to setup is setting certain programs to load at login to my account. I have not found a startup folder or setup options for programs to load at startup. Any Ideas? Please remember I am very new to linux and Ubuntu desktop. I am still learning my way around and the code for terminal sessions. So please be very descriptive in responses. Thank you...

• Ubuntu not saving files and settings when running from flash drive

  How can I make Ubuntu run completely off of a flash drive? I have downloaded Ubuntu onto a 4gb flash drive but no changes I make are saved between sessions. I want to be able to run and save everything I do to the flash drive. I don't want it interfering with my hard drive at all. I just want to be able to plug my flash drive in the computer boot Ubuntu, and for it to save my changes. E.g. When I install Google Chrome, when I reboot it isn't there.

• Session locked, Kubuntu 12.10

  After leaving my laptop for a while, my Kubuntu session closed. (I'm not sure which of the various timeout criteria caused it.) So I got a screen that said my session was locked and I needed to provide my password to unlock it. That's a nuisance, not a big problem, but I'd like to fix it so timed-out sessions don't lock the session. I assume there's something in System Settings to disable the lockout -- but where? I looked in Power Management and found a setting "Lock screen on resume", but it's unchecked. Is this possibly a bug?

• (My) Sun Ray 3i

  Last week, some Sun Ray devices were shown at the LASDEC exhibition. Afterward, they were brought back to the Aoyama Center, but not all of them found a place to be stored. So, two days ago, Iwasaki-san, one of the co-workers I've been close to (and who was at the exhibition), put a Sun Ray 3i (all-in-one with 21.5" screen) on my (shared) desk. Yay! I managed to get a Japanese keyboard, and now I can access my card and cardless sessions from Germany, and the performance is just great, as good as when I work from home in Hamburg. That's the way my deskt looks now,almost as messy as my desk in Hamburg: And my back is very grateful.

• SQLBits 9 goes to Liverpool

  SQLBits 9 has now been announced as 29th September to 1st October 2011 at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. This will follow the now familiar three day format, a training day, and two full days of concurrent sessions. Saturday 1st October will of course be the free community day. Despite growing the event quite dramatically over the past four years, this is something we are all very proud to have maintained and is a key factor when planning the events. • Are session aware Models a bad thing?

  I'm thinking specifically in Rails here, but I suspect this is a wider question. In a Rails web application I'm using data from the session in models in order that the models know who is logged in. I use this in a method which filters out some data from the database depending on a very simple permissions system. The thing is: using sessions in models in Rails requires a bit of a workaround. It works, but I've a feeling that it's something that I shouldn't be doing and I'm worried there's a big gotcha I'm missing. I suppose the Right Thing To Do would be to return all the data and filter out the not-wanted bits in the controller before passing that to the view, but doing it in the model seems to avoid quite a bit of code duplication and so feels "cleaner." Can anyone tell me why or shouldn't do this? Or that it's not a problem?

• What should be stored in UserContext?

  From my general understanding I believe UserContext for a web application is supposed to hold user authentication and authorization (user roles) information. As part of user roles, there are definitions on who can access what data and accordingly the corresponding reference data is loaded into the UserContext as well. Is this a good practice to load and use reference data from UserContext? Does this have any impact with the number of sessions vs size of data it is holding inside JVM? I am thinking we use UserContext only for authentication and authorization but load the reference data from cache on demand and use it if required.

There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain. • SSH login very slow on OS X Leopard

  My SSH sessions take a very long time to initiate. This applies for logins with and without passwords, interactive and non-interactive. I have tried setting 'GSSAPIAuthentication no' and 'IPQoS 0x00' on the client side, and 'UseDNS no' on the server side, but no dice. I'm really stumped and frustrated. The worst part is that it SFTP takes forever to establish connections too, making file transfer much longer than it would be otherwise. I thought the problem might be something with PAM, because of where the hang is in the sshd log below, so I tried commenting out each line one-by-one in the /etc/pam.d/sshd file. Some caused login to be impossible, some had no apparent effect. I can't really tell if PAM is stalling for other services, but I can say that su'ing into my account from another account with 'su -l' has no apparent delay. I tried creating a new user account, just to see if there was something wrong with my existing account, and the same problem persisted. Any ideas of what's going on?
