• Is there a way to continue a partially finished MinGW build?

  I am just trying to become familiar with MinGW (and with more complex command-line compiler tools) I have a really giant project to build, I successfully managed to generate the makefile with CMake, and started mingw. After more than an hour of hard work, and building dozens of libraries successfully, the build ended in an error. It seems I added an option in CMake which is not supported in my system. My problem is, I cannot figure out a way to just skip that library and continue with the build process. If I remove the option in CMake and start mingw again, it starts from the beginning and rebuilds everything, even those libraries which are already built.

• dynamic multiple instance of swfupload (firefox vs IE)

  We have this dynamic uploader which creates a new instance of swfupload. I'm a little bit confused with the outputs produced by firefox and ie. Firefox have the same output as chrome, safari and opera. Whenever I clicked a button for adding a new instance, the previous instances of swfupload in firefox refresh while IE don't.   Can someone with Kanban experience tell me how Kanban and Scrum differ? What are the pro's and con's of each of the different project management methodologies? Kanban seems to be getting a lot of press these days. I don't want to miss the hottest new way of tracking my teams failures (...and successes). Responses @S. That is a great article but technically no it is not clear enough. That article gives a great amount of detail about kanban (and thank you for it...good read) but it does not specifically contrast Kanban vs. Scrum. That article will help someone like me make a decision but it most certainly won't help someone like my boss or in general someone less experienced! I was hoping for a quick overview of kanban pros and cons contrasted to scrum pros and cons. Thanks though! @S. Lott - Why do you say kanban vs. scrum? What leads you to conclude they are conflicting approaches? Can you make your question more specific? I don't think that they are necessarily conflicting. But they are different enough for a user to adhere to one over the other. Perhaps one fits a project or company better than the other? How would I sell one over the other when presenting a project management approach. Say I went to a company that was currently stuck in the rutt that is "water fall" - why would I sell one approach over the other?

• Web-based clients vs thick/rich clients?

  My company is a software solutions provider to a major telecommunications company. The environment is currently IBM WebSphere-based with front-end IBM Portal servers talking to a cluster of back-end WebSphere Application Servers providing EJB services. Some of the portlets use our own home-grown MVC-pattern and some are written in JSF. Recently we did a proof-of-concept rich/thick-client application that communicates directly with the EJB's on the back-end servers. It was written in NetBeans Platform and uses the WebSphere application client library to establish communication with the EJB's. The really painful bit was getting the client to use secure JAAS/SSL communications. But, after that was resolved, we've found that the rich client has a number of advantages over the web-based portal client applications we've become accustomed to: Enormous performance advantage (CORBA vs. HTTP, cut out the Portal Server middle man) Development is simplified and faster due to use of NetBeans' visual designer and Swing's generally robust architecture The debug cycle is shortened by not having to deploy your client application to a test server No mishmash of technologies as with web-based development (Struts, JSF, JQuery, HTML, JSTL etc., etc.) After enduring the pain of web-based development (even JSF) for a while now, I've come to the following conclusion: Rich clients aren't right for every situation, but when you're developing an in-house intranet-based solution, then you'd be crazy not to consider NetBeans Platform or Eclipse RCP. • How to add a whole directory or project output to WiX package

  We decided to switch from VS integrated setup to WiX. However, what we currently do is use projects output files as the input for the setup project. This lets us easily add Application Files to a directory (for images, samples, and other resources...) and those files are automatically added to the setup when we build. I could not find any similar feature in WiX. WiX seems to require one Directory entry and one File entry for each and every directory and file. This would require us to change the WiX source everytime a file is added which, to my eyes, is prohibitive since we have so many of them. Is there any integrated way of doing that with WiX or do I have to write my own task that will create a WiX source before calling candle?

• Flex 4 vs JavaScript Options (Cappuccino, JQuery, etc.)

It's particularly heavy on the graphics side. We are 85% convinced that Adobe Flash built atop Flex is the right path to take, however Cappuccino is quite nice and seems as though it may be able to nearly fit the bill. The only pause we have right now is portability for the iPhone. With the lack of blessings from Apple we will most certainly have to create a 2nd interface for the iPhone for the site, however... Having two interfaces may not be bad as it will likely have to be custom anyway to take advantage of the differences that it affords. Any further thoughts or reevaluations of points enumerated in the noted article? Further, Flex 4 adds a lot of strength to the position mentioned previously regarding UI development. Fx4 is very nice vs Fx3 and shaves 90% from the development time when coupled with Flash Catalyst, which is not really always fully appropriate, but with some round trip tricks it seems as though it can cut through things rather well...   Hi, I'm a C++ programmer, I use Visual Studio 2008 Professional, only unmanaged code. I'm thinking of buying VS 2010 Pro. I'm confused, I don't know what are differences between those two. I know that, in plus, it has tr1 included. When I started using 2008 edition I was very pleased to see f.e. unit testing support but all new features are only for managed code. The C++ debugger in 2008 is very good, better than 2003 edition one. I would't like to buy a new tool and discover that I gained nothing and lost some functionality ( because f.e. something was moved to higher version). Once upon a time I switched from very good VS6 to VS 2003.Net and imagine what, after some time I discovered that Pro has no support for code optimalization. It is wonderful how Microsoft makes money. I wouldn't like to experience something like that again. What do you think, what can you recommended?

• VS 2008 does not understand .resource files

  I'm trying to add globalization support to my C# application. According to MSDN, there should be one embedded resource file for neutral culture and satellite DLLs with resource files for other cultures. I've created 2 satellite DLLs without any problems and got my app to automatically load right one using ResourceManager. But I can't embed default neutral culture resource file into my executable. When I remove all satellite DLLs or set culture to some culture I don't have satellite DLL for, I get exception "Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture." when application attempts to create ResourceManager. It looks like VS 2008 does not include my .resource file into main assembly. I've tried different ways to get resource file embedded: compiling it by resgen.exe from text file and adding it to the project; changing its name to add second .resources extension; creating .resx file with same name; etc. And I still don't see the way to get resource file embedded and used by ResourceManager - I'm having same exception. What is the right way to add default neutral culture resource file to application in VS 2008 ?

  In my web application VS 2008 solution, I have the AjaxControlToolkit.dll in my bin directory and a whole set of language directories for it (ar, cs, de,es, fr, he, etc...) I don't remember how the language directories got in there. If I am using other languages via the ACT, do I need these directories? If not, then I don't? When I do a rebuild solution, the dll (AjaxControlToolkit.resources.dll) in these directories disappear. If I need them, what do I need to do to keep them from being deleted during a rebuild?

  Let's say I have 2 interfaces defined like so: public interface ISkuItem { public string SKU { get; set; } } public interface ICartItem : ISkuItem { public int Quantity { get; set; } public bool IsDiscountable { get; set; } } When I go to implement the interface in C#, VS produces the following templated code: public class CartItem : ICartItem { #region ICartItem Members public int Quantity { get {...} set {...} } public bool IsDiscountable { get {...} set {...} } #endregion #region ISkuItem Members public string SKU { get {...} set {...} } #endregion } In VB.NET, the same class is built out like so: Public Class CartItem Implements ICartItem Public Property IsDiscountable As Boolean Implements ICartItem.IsDiscountable 'GET SET' End Property Public Property Quantity As Integer Implements ICartItem.Quantity 'GET SET' End Property Public Property SKU As String Implements ISkuItem.SKU 'GET SET' End Property End Class VB.NET explicitly requires you to add Implements IInterfaceName.PropertyName after each property that gets implemented whereas C# simply uses regions to indicate which properties and methods belong to the interface. Interestingly in VB.NET, on the SKU property, I can specify either Implements ISkuItem.SKU or Implements ICartItem.SKU. Although the template built by VS defaults to ISkuItem, I can also specify ICartItem if I want. Oddly, because C# only uses regions to block out inherited properties, it seems that I can't explicitly specify the implementing interface of SKU in C# like I can in VB.NET. My question is: Is there any importance behind being able to specify one interface or another to implement properites in VB.NET, and if so, is there a way to mimic this functionality in C#?

• Images in database vs file system

  We have a project coming up where we will be building a whole backend CMS system that will power our entire extranet and intranet with one package. The question I have been trying to find an answer to is which is better: storing images in the database (SQL Server 2005) so we may have integrity, single replication plan, etc OR storing on the file system? One issue we have is that we have multiple servers load balanced that require to have the same data at all times. As of now we have SQL replication taking care of that but file replication seems to be a little tougher. Another concern we have is that we would like to have multiple resolutions of the same image, we are not sure if creating and storing each version on the file system would be best or maybe dynamically pulling and creating the resolution image we would like upon request. Our concerns are the with the following: Data integrity Data replication Multiple resolutions Speed of database vs file system Overhead load of database vs file system Data management and backup Does anyone have a similar situation or have any input on what would be recommended? • Third-party dll's in a website layout

  I have a solution with several projects and one website. The website uses some third-party dll's. I have to place the dll's in the bin folder under the website. This is the same bin where the dll's from the other projects get auto-loaded. Is there a way I can place the third-party dll's in a separate folder? If I 'Add Reference' to the dll when it is in a separate folder, VS always adds it to the GAC. If the separate folder is outside of the website layout, 'Add Reference' never works. My goal is have the bin folder only for auto-updated dll's, and a separate folder for third-party dll's. [This method works fine for the projects; just the website has issues]

• Performance of VIEW vs. SQL statement

  I have a query that goes something like the following: select <field list> from <table list> where <join conditions> and <condition list> and PrimaryKey in (select PrimaryKey from <table list> where <join list> and <condition list>) and PrimaryKey not in (select PrimaryKey from <table list> where <join list> and <condition list>) The sub-select queries both have multiple sub-select queries of their own that I'm not showing so as not to clutter the statement. One of the developers on my team thinks a view would be better. I disagree in that the SQL statement uses variables passed in by the program (based on the user's login Id). Are there any hard and fast rules on when a view should be used vs. using a SQL statement? What kind of performance gain issues are there in running SQL statements on their own against regular tables vs. against views. (Note that all the joins / where conditions are against indexed columns, so that shouldn't be an issue.) EDIT for clarification... • Visual Studio namespace errors after deleting userControls

  Really Visual Studio can be so annoying sometimes... I did nothing else than deleting 3 UserControls in a folder. Since that time I get a error message I do not get rid of. Whatever I do I can not build successfully my project. I did not touch the SchoolAdministrationUC.xaml file , but I deleted 3 other UserControls also located in the path: TBM\View\SchoolclassAdministration\ Error message from VS: Error 1 The type or namespacename "SchoolclassAdministration" is in namespace "TBM.View" not available. (missing assembly reference?) E:\TBM\obj\x86\Debug\View\SchoolclassAdministration\SchoolAdministrationUC.g.cs 33 16 TBM How do I get rid of error ?

• Productivity features in VS, how to display documentation

  I used to program quite a lot in Java, recently I've began to work with C#. I think that most of advantages of C# (comparing to Java) are corrupted by VS. Now what really makes me crazy is intelisence. It offers only list of classes of that are already in "using". I would like to see suggestions of all classes from all libraries. Then, when I finally remember the name of class I want to use and type it manually I have to confirm "using"(by clicking pop-up(!)). This is cost me some time and makes me nervous. Most important of all then I'm choosing between methods or classes, filling parameters of methods etc. I need to see documentation of those classes, methods etc. VS displays just a small tool tip that is contains only summary what is completely unsatisfactory. It does not even contain methods return type(!) and parameters. Resharper does not solve any of these. Its suggestions are also mostly useless(it suggest actions I don't want to do). As well I'd like to see Resharper's sugestion not only when I'm on the line in task. Can somebody suggest a solution ? Maybe some addon, how to change it in settings or alike? Other productivity features or a way how to "generally" set shortcuts to be the same as in Java would be also appreciated.

• Flex vs GWT again

  Hi all, I am working on a customized web ontology editor (something like http://webprotege.stanford.edu/ which is built by GWT). My backend will be Java+Spring+Hibernate and domain models are in Java. My frontend will be something like WebProtege which requires extensive RPC call. It is quite clear that I should use GWT as I can refer to the open source code. However, due to company policy, I shall consider Flex as well. I understand Flex can remotely invoke Java backend methods via BlazeDS using AMF (Is there a Flex equivalent of GWT-RPC?). I have read discussion on GWT vs Flex vs ?. If I can make full decision sure I will go with GWT. GWT strengths like support right to left characters, support iPhone/iPad, smaller size, support JSON out of the box, support printing are not important considerations for my project. Besides GWT supports Java generic, enum; domain objects can be shared with both GWT client and server; coding are more seamlessly... anyone can suggest other strong reasons that I should only go with GWT? FYI, I have plenty of Java experience but both GWT and Flex are new to me. Thanks.

• How to prepare a codebase for compiling on both Windows and Unix-based systems

  Hi! I am wondering about different solutions to easily compile my cross-platform application for both windows and unix. Right now I am using a makefile on Ubuntu, but before my codebase grows larger I'd like to perform the steps necessary to compile it on Windows, and then continue doing so regularly to see that it still works. I'd preferably not contaminate my SVN codebase repository with multiple "makefile" solutions, such as VC++ solutions and so on, I'd like a more automatic way. I tried using mingw with make for windows, but it seems my secondexpansion awesomeness doesn't work on the Windows version (or something like that). It wouldn't compile, and also complained about _winNT or something like that not being defined. How should I prepare my codebase for cross-platform easy compiling? Things like buildtools, perhaps autogenerate VS file from makefile, or something similar. Some preprocessor magic in a stdinc file perhaps? Thanks!

  The project is hosted on a tfs server and I need to access the build number which I assume is automatically generated when ever you build a project. I need to retrieve that build number and display it on the web pages so that QAs and testing people know exactly which build they are working on. I am looking for some kind of post deployment task which can access the build number or may be generate one and probably write it down to a file, from where I can read it. • I've agreed to buy a domain previously owned, now what?

  I wanted to buy some domain already owned by someone else. So I contact it's registrar, negotiated the price and came to a deal. Everything was done via e-mail. Now what? How the actual domain ownership is transfered to me? What information should I asked for before giving any money to the registrant? Note: the registrar is a well known domain name registrar, accredited by the ICANN and everything.
