• Linux Uninstalling errors

  I want to uninstall back-track 5 so I deleted the partitions for back-track os. After deleting the partition that used to be for back-track becomes free space as in picture. But I can't delete that partition nor creating a new partition. I used G-Parted from hiren boot cd but it says there is no partition table, you need to create a partition table. But actually I have 5 partitions already. And I thought of restarting might fix it. But after showing post screen my laptop show grub error. I don't know what to do, and I tried to install back-track again to fix the problem but it also says that i do not have any partitions. I can only boot windows by passing through hiren boot cd. But most of the time My computer is not recognizing the external dvd drive, nor the internal so i have to restart again and again, hoping to catch the time computer recognize the dvd drive. Can I change the boot loader to correct the grub error? SOLVED : I have solved the grub error by writing MBR again by using EasyBCD But I still have the format error.

• Melting plastic around DC-in jack in laptop

  I recently noticed that the plastic around the DC-in jack of my laptop was warped (melted) a little bit. Since I noticed, I have done some experiments, and saw that the metal tip of the charger heats up very much when I am gaming, or performing CPU-intensive work (it's so hot that i can't hold it between my fingers). When I am using Windows normally (web browsing, music, video), the tip is not hot. I tried using another charger from a compatible laptop, but its metal tip overheated as well, so the problem is not caused by the charger. I have been using this laptop for gaming for 1.5 years and I never had this problem. When gaming I always use a laptop cooler. Dust is not the problem (i cleaned out the dust), and the CPU and GPU temperatures are not higher than when I got the laptop. The only thing that is excessively hot is the charger tip. Because I bought my laptop from the USA, sending it to warranty and back would cost more than the laptop's value, so I need to fix it myself. I have googled around, and I saw that the problem might be the DC-in jack that is located on the motherboard of the laptop. I plan to take the laptop apart and see if it has become loose, and soldering it in place if it has. My questions for you are: Did anyone deal with this problem in the past? Did anyone manage to fix it? Is the DC-in jack the culprit in this case? Or is it possible for the problem to be caused by another part on the motherboard? Is there any way I can check the DC-in jack with a multimeter? What should I measure (resistance, etc)? EDIT: My laptop is a Sager NP5135 (aka Clevo B5130M). • APC uptime 0 because of Fast

  I have a VPS using Parallels/Plesk (11.0.9 Update #22, last updated at Oct 31, 2012 03:33 AM CentOS 6.3 (Final) x86_64) I have apache (CGI/FastCGI) installed and nginx as reverse proxy. Everything is working just fine. I installed APC for caching, but the issue is that the uptime is 0 always. It's restarting each 15 seconds or so. I checked everywhere and can't find a solution to fix it. The server have the grace restart enabled, but every 6 hours, which shouldn't influence the APC uptime. Searching in Google I found that this could be related to Apache, running with FCGId instead of FastCGI. Plesk/Apache is using this config file: usr/local/psa/admin/conf/templates/default/service/php_over_fastcgi.php which content is: <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> <Files ~ (\.php)> SetHandler fcgid-script FCGIWrapper <?php echo $VAR->server->webserver->apache->phpCgiBin ?> .p$ Options +ExecCGI allow from all </Files> Is here the issue or elsewhere ? How can I fix this to work with FastCGI and make APC working properly. I forgot to specify that even if the uptime is below one minute, APC is doing pretty good job caching (92% are hits).

  We installed a clustered SQL 2005 installation on windows 2008 and reattached our san drives from another machine and restored to do a migration to new hardware. There have been a few minor issues, but this one has me stuck. Trying to populate Full-Text indexes is not working. • Broke NetBeans file associations in Windows XP how do I get them back?

  Hello... I broke my file association in XP... Does anyone have any clue how to fix it? When I right click and select Open With... the application I want to use (NetBeans) to open the file is not on the list... and when I browse for it it won't let me select it (well it does but then won't add it to the list). The way I broke it is by installing 6.7 and then uninstalling 6.5.... since then my file associations have all been broken. I even tried uninstalling NetBeans and reinstalling it again... no luck... I even went as far as adding my own action called "OpenIt" to the file types I wanted... and that works... but only if the file/folders that contain in don't have any spaces... otherwise NetBeans throws a ".....does not exist, or is not a plain file". Thus nothing off the desktop can be opened... Does anyone know of how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

• Split MPEG video from command line?

  I have a homemade DVD that I'm effectively trying to insert chapters into and rearrange - the original author burned it as one long chapter, and I'd like to rip it into smaller pieces and re-encode it into a new DVD. I ripped the DVD with the following command: mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/sr2 -dumpstream -dumpfile raw.vob I'm running Gentoo Linux with mplayer version 1.0-rc2_p20090731 (the latest available in Portage). I have a list of times that the chapters are supposed to span (for example 30:11-33:25), so my first thought was to rip the entire DVD and use mpgtx to cut out certain pieces of the file. My issue is that running mpgtx -i on the file reports quite a few timestamp jumps: Time stamps jumped from 59.753789 to 0.001622 at position 1d29800 Time stamps jumped from 204963823030450.343750 to 31.165900 at position 2d4f800 Time stamps jumped from 60.077878 to 0.001622 at position 43cc000 Time stamps jumped from 60.024233 to 0.001622 at position 65c5000 Time stamps jumped from 204963823068631.718750 to 52.549244 at position 7fd1000 I've tried to fix the indexes using: mencoder raw.vob -oac copy -ovc copy -forceidx -o fixed.vob -of mpeg But mpgtx will still report timestamp issues. My immediate question: is there a way to take the ripped movie I have and correct its timestamps so I can cut it with mpgtx? If I can get that one issue out of the way, building the rest of the DVD will be smooth sailing. If it's not possible to fix the timestamps on this file: is there a better way to rip small chunks of the DVD into separate files for recompilation later? I'd very much like this to be done on Linux, and it'd be even better if I could script it somehow (feed in a list of start and end positions, or start times and durations, and get out a series of ripped files). If need be, I also have a Mac OS X machine available, but no Windows. Edit: I wound up finding another solution involving HandBrake and ffmpeg (with help from this question), but the question stands. Edit again: Turns out my other solution didn't quite work - the audio desynchronized by about five seconds, in about half of my cut mpgs - so I'm back to square one. Anyone?

• Dell Studio 1555 not starting up

  This is a 3-year-old laptop. I never had a big problem with it until now. I updated Kubuntu the night before yesterday. And Firefox got updated to version 18 and a few other related packages got updated. Then I shut down the laptop and restarted it, but it failed to start. I could hear the fan and the hard disk and the optical disk drive initialize. And the power button also lighted up. But there was no video - no POST or BIOS menu. I even opened the laptop up to the point when only the motherboard was the only thing attached to the base cover. I took it to the technician this evening. He checked it casually, and said that it might be a motherboard problem and will cost quite a bit to fix. Though he was not sure and said that he will give me a call after confirming the problem. Has anyone else had the same problem? What was it and what was the fix?

• Missing BootMgr in Vista

  Am in really deep trouble here and would use every advice available from everyone out there.. Am message just pooped on my screen and i had to restart my laptop. upon restarting the BootMgr got corrupted. Am running Windows Vista 32 bit by the way.. i got onto Google with a friend's PC and found two basic ways of fixing it. the first one that requires windows to automatically fix it using Startup repair ends up with the error message : "Startup REpair cannot repair this computer automatically" the second option that requires me to rebuild the BCD scans my system and finds the operating system on drive D:\Windows which i believe should be C:. if i hit Y(yes) for the rebuild process to take place i get the message "The required system device cannot be found" i then try the second option which requires me to recreate the BCD Store ends up with an error message that says "The store export operation has failed. The requested system device cannot be found". proceeding from there is meaningless since the system device cannot be found. I somehow believe the device cannot be found because its identifying the windows installation on D: instead of C: but how to change that i have no idea... I dot know how it happens to identify an O/S on D: when there's none there... How do i go about fixing the BootMgr? I have very important files on my system and cant afford to reinstall windows... i really need to fix this..Please help...

• Synaptics touchpad stops working randomly

  I have two laptops. One dell Vostro and other Vaio Z. Both have Synaptics (Yes, I have checked, and the original drivers were from Synaptics as well). On both laptops, the touchpad scrolling stops working at some arbitrary time and nothing seems to solve it except a reboot. Sometimes, it randomly starts working again. I have downloaded all latest drivers from OEM. Interestingly, when I run a program as Administrator, scrolling works in that window only. This problem is very odd. It happens without any reason and I've not been able to find a fix for more than a year. I have seen some unusual suggestions on forums (e.g., to "restore windows to a previous working state") but never any fix that solves this issue properly. I have tried installing latest drivers and I DO NOT want to restore windows to a previous working configuration. OS: Windows 7 64 bit Professional (Sony Vaio Z - VPCZ128GG) Windows 7 32 bit Professional (Dell) Edit: Temporary solution is to uninstall the synaptics driver and let Windows 7 use its default built in one. However, I really prefer the Synaptic driver because it activates the scroll button rather than the mouse wheel (useful in some apps such as MS Photo Editor)

• Failing Windows Updates with Error Code 800719e4

  On a number of Vista machines I have now come across the same error - when installing updates everything works fine, until it after it reboots and the rolls back during step 3. On all occasions (where a simple retry hasn't worked) the error code has been 800719e4. On my own laptop I have so far tried the following:- Installed the updates one by one manually - I started on the smallest and one by one have worked towards the largest one which has left me with "Security Update for Windows (KB2286198)" that refuses to install. Renamed all the files in "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" to "xxx.old" where xxx was the original name with windows update turned off - no change Renamed all the folders in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" in the same manner - no change Attempted to install it manually "Windows6.0-KB2286198-x86.msu" - no change Tried to un-install IE8 - doesn't work, rolls back at the end (Installing the IE9 Beta when it launched was what alerted me to the issue on this laptop) Ran a "Fix It" thing from the Microsoft Website - no help (Can't find the link now). Tried to recover from the disk - but alas my laptop only has a recovery partition (and was unservice packed original). Ran with nothing running on startup, and only MS services - again no change. Google is being useless with a load of posts trying to get me to call a telephone number with letters in (presumably an American number) The error code appears to mean error log full but no one has any idea which log! • Is my laptop battery dead?

  Recently my laptop battery will get extremely hot (definitely hotter than it should get) when I charge it. After that I usually end up removing it once it's fully charged to let it cool down, which takes a couple hours... Question is, is my battery dead? My last battery I had that died just ended up lasting 2 - 3 minutes on battery, no weird heat issues. And is there any way to possibly fix this? Probably not but I won't be able to get a replacement anytime soon. UPDATE: A few days ago when this happened and it cooled down, assuming it was fully charged, I ran my laptop on battery, and the battery life lasted about 10 minutes and then the laptop shutdown. I then plugged it in later and charged it back up, and for a while I had a orange light blinking on my laptop - which I assumed meant the battery was dead, especially since I got 10 minutes battery life. Then today, I turned my laptop on and was surprised to see that the battery was at 20% and charging (it's been plugged in since the incident above, so it should have been fully charged when I shut it off) I let it charge up, and as usual it got pretty hot around the time it was fully charged. So I turned my laptop off and pulled the battery out to let it cool down Now the thing is, just now I tried running it on battery, and it's been going for an hour now... so maybe its not dead? (also the orange light is no longer blinking...) Thanks in advance if anyone knows whats going on, and how to fix it, if its fixable =] EDIT: Some info if it helps... my laptop is about 2 years ago, and it's an Asus K50ID. I know laptop batteries usually don't last more than a year but I'm trying to keep this one going for as long as I can.

• Dell XPS 15 L502X hard drive Partition

  I have a situation here. I got my new Dell XPS 15 Laptop. The configuration of hard drive is as below : Volume 1: (OEM Partition): 133MB Volume 2: OS (C:): 685.25 GB Volume 3: Recovery : 13.25 GB Now, I am trying to re-partition my C Drive to have a C: drive with 100 GB and a new drive with 585 GB. Earlier, I tried using the Windows 7 Disk Management to shrink and extend the volume. That lead to the OS and hard drive not working. Dell Tech support tried to fix the issue, but they were not able to fix the issue online. Later a Dell Technician arrived my place, and replaced the hard drive with a new hard drive. Please help me re-partition the C: Drive with 100 GB, and new D drive with 585 GB. I don't want to lose my Recovery Partition. SOLUTION As Suggested by KCotreau below , I have done exactly. I have resized the C drive to 100 GB. And then applied the changes. Windows got restarted. On the boot screen, the partition was taking place. It took around 30 mins ( approx. ). Once after restart, I can see my C drive is 100 GB. Now opened the Easeus again. And created a new partition for the free space ( 585 GB ) this took 10 seconds to create. • "Enter/Return" Key with Word Mobile on Windows Mobile

  Some of our employees are using PDAs running Windows Mobile. I wish I could provide more data regarding versions, but frankly these things aren't my jurisdiction. Someone's simply come to me looking for what they thought would be a quick fix. They're using Word Mobile and the barcode scanner to record large volumes of data. The scanner's default action is to insert the scanned text exactly as if it had been input with the keyboard, and puts a newline at the end. That's great, because it's exactly what we need it to do: separate data with newlines. The issue comes when system can't read the barcode, and the employee has to type in the data by hand. They've discovered a very peculiar quirk of Mobile applications: pressing the hardware Enter/Return key on the keyboard appears to save and exit the application. How do we change this behavior? They've realized that using the stylus to "click" the virtual on-screen keyboard's Enter/Return key will add the necessary newline, but it's a huge inconvenience for them. How do I fix the default behavior of the Enter/Return key for Word Mobile to instead insert a newline?

• What is the ideal way to set up multiple FTP enabled web accounts on Fedora?

  I'm setting up a test server for use as a web development platform, and I'd like to mimic as closely as I can a typical shared hosting setup. That is, I'd like my server to have multple user FTP accounts, each of which links to a directory containing the webroot of the site, and I'd like apache to be able to easily see and manupulate these files. I'll admit: I'm not as familiar with Fedora as I'd like, I run Ubuntu on my home box and SElinux is giving me some grief. My initial plan was to have each user FTP into their home directory, and put the web directory there as well, but SElinux throws a hissy fit when apache tries to access anything outside of its web directory, so that plan was a no go. Would it be wise to continue this route, and perhaps mount web directories in user home folders so that FTP could still be used to access them, even though apache saw them in var/www like it expects? Would it make more sense to set up custom FTP accounts and use a single FTP user on the server box? What's the general course of action on something like this? I'm using vsftpd right now to host web directories, which is why I'm liking the home directory approach (it's simple and secure) but of course there's bound to be a better way to go about it. Thanks. (I'll leave other things, like restricted DB access and such, to another post. I'm interested right now with just getting FTP and apache to play nice in a multi-user environment.) PS: For the record, an issue I ran into when doing all of this was that if apache isn't running as the same user as the FTP account is saving as, there are permissions errors when FTP creates files, requiring the remote user to chmod the files to fix it. A logical fix would be to run apache in a special group, put all web users in this group, and have FTP access default to giving this group read/write access to everything like apache would expect, but I never could figure out how to accomplish this. Bonus points and cake if you know a solution.

• UACCEEventLog 301 Filling Event Logs

  After pushing out clients for the MS Application Compatibility Toolkit on our domain via GPO, UACCEEventLog 301 occurs a few times per second in the event log. Several Thousand per hour. One test i need to do is logon with Administrator to see if these events go away while Admin, but of course that is not a fix. This is only part of the event log entry, but is the most readable and clearly indicates yet another problem with Antivirus software. But still no fix. Originally, i posted this In Words and Bytes, but then edited it to make it much easier to read. LocalMachine\Users do have Read Access to this key. • Intermittent Trouble Entering Hibernate on WinXP

  My personal desktop, running 32-bit Windows XP SP2 (with 4GB RAM, 2.75GB addressable, swap disabled, hiberfil.sys existing and contiguous on C:\; SP3 is not installed because SP2 has been working fine and I do not want to re-qualify with SP3 just for sheer perversity) typically gets hibernated at night. For a long time this worked great, but recently the machine has had trouble entering hibernation. Sometimes when I press my power button (configured to hibernate), the box will start the procedure for hibernating (i.e., go to the blue "Windows XP" background logo and display a message about entering hibernation), but before displaying the usual blue-on-black hibernation progress bar it will drop back to the desktop. No error messages appear, on screen or in the system log. The only record of unsuccessful hibernation attempts in the system log, which proudly proclaims that "The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service entered the running state." once per failed hibernation attempt. The problem is almost certainly resource related: if I then close one or more applications which are running, and repeat the exact same process, the machine will hibernate perfectly. There does not appear to be a reliable high-water mark for virtual or physical memory use, below which the machine is guaranteed to hibernate; it's different every time (though typically, below about 1.1–1.4 GB memory usage seems to be where hibernate succeeds most often). Memory may not even be the relevant resource; as far as I know, it could also be handles or sockets. This behavior is relatively recent: it has only started in the last few months; before then, I could hibernate reliably no matter what the current resource use of the system. This machine claims to have hotfix Q909095 installed, but since the symptoms of my problem match KB909095 rather well, I'm suspicious if this fix is actually working as intended. Any ideas on how to fix this or where to start debugging?

• How do I access my samba drive through several layers of network topology?

  I have a new windows 7 Home Premium machine that is in a different room than my main computer area. As such I have to use a bridge and another router. Everything is working wonderfully except I cannot access the SAMBA drive with the new machine. I know that SAMBA is accessible as an older WinXP machine can access it. • Problems installing GIT on Ubuntu through SSH

  I'm having trouble installing git using this command: sudo apt-get install git-core It's giving me the problems below and I'm not quite sure how to get this to work correctly. I try running sudo apt-get update and after it just gives me problems. If anyone knows how to solve this or a possible way of getting GIT on your machine differently it would be of much help. I've never had a problem with using apt-get. • Did chkdsk make it harder to restore files?

  My friend asked me to try and fix his loaded Sansa Clip + which wasn't playing. After opening it in MSC mode I discovered that the Music directory was empty and total of all files was only a few MB. However Disk properties showed me that it was 7Gb full. I then ran Tools - Error Checking and Windows dutifully informed me that disk was corrupt and I should run again Allowing Windows to Fix Errors. I did that and it told me everything was fixed and that all files were placed in FOUND.000 Dir. FOUND.000 was about 7.5 GB with FILE0000-1546 . CHK. (I am aware of methods like ChkBack to scan and convert to mp3 etc BUT Original filenames and structure needed!) Now I started getting worried that I made things worse! I have plenty of experience with Data Recovery Programs - Recuva, Restore My Files etc. and I was anyhow planning to use them to scan the drive. But NOW after CHKDSK "fixed" the drive maybe it modified critical FAT information vital for data recovery. So I run these programs and 0!!!. No trace of files! I tried a ton of Recovery Programs with same results TILL EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard found all files and I purchased program for $55! My Question In your opinion - did running CHKDSK with automatic fixing of errors make matters worse (i.e. many data recovery progs. didn't find a trace and they would have done if not for chkdsk) or was the filesystem too corrupt anyhow for regular File Recovery Progs.? If I would be a Professional - would I be responsible for running CHKDSK - automatic Fixing. Do you know of a better Data Recovery Program than EaseUs Data Recovery wizard - According to my experience I haven't found better!? Thanks

• Blank list of windows services

  Recently when I open windows services (always as administrator) I get a blank list of services: When I try and click on one of the empty lines I get this "Script Error" message: This happens over and over again, after several times I restarted my computer. I can't pinpoint exactly when this started happening or if I made any specific changes to my computer at that time. Someone told my to try running scf /scannow as administrator, but when I try to do that the scan stops at 34% and I get the message: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit, and I would really like to avoid reinstalling windows. Does anyone know how to fix this? Edit - Here is another attempt I made and some more information that might help: Following WhoIsRich's suggestion, I tried the command sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows. This gave the error message "The arguments passed to sfc are invalid. The offline windows directory specified points to the online system", and then I realized this command is meant to be run after booting from another system. Since I don't have my windows installation disk right now, I used my own system to create a recovery disk, and then restarted my computer and used the recovery disk to boot. I then ran the above command, and I got the following message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log". I then restarted my computer and let it boot up normally. The problem with windows services persists, and the CBS.log file is a long log file with many entries, and I don't know if there is useful information in it, and if there is, how to find it.

• Windows Phone sync error when syncing with iTunes on different Hard Drive

  I have my iTunes library file on a separate hard drive (which I believe may be the cause of the problem) and I have been trying to use it to synchronize with my Windows Phone. I would like to first note that if I set up my phone to synchronize with 'Windows Libraries', then it works fine. This is however not ideal as I have categorised my music and made playlists etc, on iTunes. When I first link my Windows Phone to the Windows Phone App (for desktop) and select iTunes from the above selection, I get the following error message: After searching that error, I found the following forum threads: Fix for error 8300300B when trying to sync Lumia 920 Windows 8 Phone in PC? Error code 8300300B on Windows Phone 8 while trying to sync I've tried the workarounds described in the above threads, however, they did not work for me. If I ignore that error message, I see the expected interface, along with all of my iTunes library's media, however the 'Sync' button is greyed out. I have tried some other things to try and fix this: Removing the app's AppData folder Uninstalling, reinstalling Using the full-screen modern app (does not allow for iTunes syncing)

• httpd.config Easy Apache WHM CentOS

  First let me explain how I got to this situation. I run a Streaming Video Site. Videos are about 100-250MB in size at any given time there are 500 people on the site. So I guess that would make then static. Recently My site started getting really slow and the only way to fix it temporarily was to restart apache. Now there was no change in traffic that could have caused this. My site is not being attacked. My hosting company recomended to implement mpm_mod and suPHP. They did that by using Easy Apache in WHMS. Then everything was working fine but a little slow. I researched around and to my understanding that mpm will do that but be more table. I was told that installing FastCGI would speed things up just enough. Well that made everything worse. The site is slow and time's out. I used WHM and took off fastCGI but its still the same, it seems like everything i do as of now nothing changes. I even did a roll back on the htconfig file but that didn't work. I'm not sure how to fix this. and my hosting network guy wont be able to touch the problem until Tuesday. I have root access.

• openvpn problem

  I have a problem with openvpn. I have already setup openvpn sucessfully on some other servers in the past (basic configuration, nothing special). On this server, I used the same config file, but for setting up nat iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.4.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE doesn't work. It gives error: iptables v1.3.5: can't initialize iptables table `nat': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?) Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. How do I fix this error? Also, if I can't fix this error, can I do bridging instead of routing? I have only 1 interface, and I can connect to remote server only via ssh (and need to avoid reboots if at all possible) so if briding means a whole ethernet card has to be devoted to the openvpn (and no other servers) then briding is out, otherwise I can use briding. Do you know of a simple, step by step guide to configure openvpn briding (just simple openvpn server and clients that can access internet through vpn server, nothing fancy)?

• Printing from Firefox on different printers and setting the page details beforehand

  I´ve got an odd problem and I have not been able to fix this. I have a computer which is connected to two printers. One is a receipt printer (EPSON TM-U220), and the other one is an impact printer (Epson LX-300+). From Firefox, I need to print on both printers at different moments. So first I print on the receipt printer, then on the impact printer, etc. However, whenever I first print on the receipt printer, and then go back to the impact printer, the printout is only the width of the page of the receipt printer. That is, the page does not come out properly, just the left part of the page is used for printing and the right part is completely empty, as if I am just printing on the small receipt paper. And there is no way I can tell Firefox that I am printing on this larger printer. The second print on the impact printer goes fine. Firefox now knows it is printing on the impact printer, and it comes out properly on the full page width. But every first print on the impact printer is using the wrong paper size. How can I fix this? When I go to PAGE PREVIEW I can not set the printer UNTIL I actually print the page. If I go to PRINT PREVIEW CONFIGURE PAGE, I can not set the printer I will be using. I can only do so if I go to PRINT PREVIEW PRINT (here is the dropdown box to set the printer). But I can only set the printer and then click PRINT, or CANCEL. If I click PRINT, then the computer remembers the setting but that page will come our wrong, and when I click cancel it simply does not remember the printer I just set.
