  • I found two usb sticks on the ground. Now what?

    As from subject. I want to see what's inside. I am seriously interested in finding the owner if possible and returning them, but I am worried it could be an attempt at social engineering. I own a macbook intel with OSX 10.6. It is a very important install. What would you do in my situation if you want to see the content without risks ? Any proposal welcome. Edit: I decided not to plug them in, and I brought them to the hotel reception. They will forward it to the police.

  • Why doesn’t windows explorer show my removable / USB drive even though the command prompt does ?

    I'm running WinXP SP2. Around 50% of the time, when I slot in my USB drive. Windows explorer refuses to show the drive. If I click on the Safely remove hardware icon on the tray, I can see a menu item for the drive - say drive G: (the light on the USB drive is also on) If I type in G: into the address bar of explorer, it says 'Cannot find...' If I type in G: into a command prompt window, it works and I can do a dir to see the list of directories on the drive. To fix this, I've to remove-reinsert the pen-drive. But doing it every day is annoying. Also this happens only on this machine.. I use this drive on my home machine and it works flawlessly each time. Can anyone suggest things that I could try ?     I found the following in a text file, and I would like to use the Apple Service Diagnostic Application from a bootable USB key but I cannot find where to download it or set it up? Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive.   • Windows 7 boot from downloaded .iso

    Downloaded Windows 7 .iso off the net and want to install from USB key on old laptop (previously/still running XP) that has no CD/DVD drive. Here's what I've got so far: Read the instructions in this post: http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345 , which were quite straight forward and clear. Properly formatted USB key with another laptop (this one running vista), also with no DVD drive wasn't sure how to make the USB bootable, since my .iso was downloaded and I have no DVD drive. Any help would be much appreciated!!

  • Expanding Files 0%, error 0x80070017 Windows 7 x64 RTM

    I have downloaded Windows 7 x64 from MSDN. I have checked the hash of the file and it is correct. I have them made a bootble USB stick (http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345 (had to use my vista bootsect.exe as running 32bit at the moment). When I boot from the USB it fails when expanding the file. It stays on 0% and fails after around 90 seconds. The error is 0x80070017. As the hash is correct and I am using USB I guess it could be a hardware problems. Any advice how to get Windows 7 installed? The machine is a Dell Studio Slim.

  • Need software to save videos from 4tube.com - to watch the videos smoothly

    Isn't there a programs that will capture screen writes at the hardware level? I have tried several Firefox add-ons, and several stand-alone programs, and none of them will save videos from this site. I even paid for Replay Media Catcher, and it didn't work, so I got a refund. (The website for the best Firefox video downloader I have, Downloadhelper, said Replay Media Catcher worked with that site.) I have a slow internet connection, and cannot watch videos smoothly unless I can cache them. This site (4tube.com) doesn't cache, when you restart, it reloads, when you pause it stops - so I need to be able to save the videos to be able to watch them.

    There are lots of ways to disable pendrive automount. I used one, but regreted, forgot which one and now need to reenable pendrive automount. It may have been a changed setting after pressing a button while booting Ubuntu or a deleted folder named something20090101 or 01012009something or whatever as long as it's a word and a date... If I don't want pendrive viruses, it's disable autorun, but keep automount enabled, right? blush

  • How to speed up rsync?

    I'm running rsync to sync a directory onto my external USB HDD. It's about 150 gigs of data. 50000+ files I would guess. It's running it's first sync at the moment, but its copying files at a rate of only 1-5 MB/s. That seems incredibly slow for a USB 2.0 enclosure. There are no other transfers happening on the drive either. Here are the options I used: rsync -avz --progress /mysourcefolder /mytargetfolder I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10.

  • Flex puts _docs_ folder into the bin. Can that be stopped?

    I started using Flex Builder 3 only recently. There is a behavior I want to change. Flex apparently looks for folders that have underscore in front of their names inside the libraries on the project path, and transfers them to the bin directory. This often results in several megabytes of junk in my bin, and I want to change this behavior. Does anyone know how to do that?

  • Why are FMS logs filled with 'play' event status code 408 for a failed webcast?

    Recently we had a live webcast event go horribly wrong. I'm doing the technical post-mortem, with limited information. We know that the hardware encoder (a Digital Rapid Touch Stream Web HDI) was unable to send upstream at a sustained reliable high rate. What we don't know is if the encoder's connection was problematic (Zürich), or that of the streaming server (in Frankfurt). Unfortunately, I've got three different vendors all blaming each other (the CDN who runs the server, the on-site ISP and the on-site encoding team.) In the FMS log files I see a couple of interesting things: Zillions of Status Code 408 on play event entries for clients. Adobe's documentation stats that this "Stream stopped because client disconnected". ("Zillions" would be a ratio of 10 events for every individual IP address.) Several unpublish / (re)publish events per hour for the encoder I'd like to know if all those 408s could tell me with authority that the FMS server was starved for bandwidth, or that the encoding signal was starved (and hence the server was disconnecting clients.) Any clues?

    What is the best way to backup/restore my USB drive that I use for my Xbox? I want to make sure that if the USB drive goes, that I can retrieve my saved games and such onto another USB drive. I was able to show the content of the drive, however, I wasn't sure if I could simply copy the content onto a Truecrypt volume and be able to restore it from there at a later date. The file system is not FAT or NTFS, wasn't sure about the impacts of copying from two different file systems... I currently have a DataTraveler G3 16GB. After a bit of googling, I was able to find this article, mentions an app called USBXtafGUI

  • Booting from a USB drive that was originally a boot drive

    When Win 7 went RTM, I upgraded my laptop from XP. But to protect myself against the possibility of having data inaccessible, I got a new disk and put it in the laptop, and took the old (XP) disk and put it in a USB enclosure. I have no trouble accessing the data on the USB drive under Windows 7. But I would like to be able to plug it in, tell the BIOS to boot from the USB drive, and be back on my old machine. The laptop is a Dell Precision M90, and it has a boot from USB option in its boot menu. But when I try to do that, it does read the drive, gets as far as putting up the Windows XP splash screen and starting the boot progress bar, and then reboots. What do I need to do to the old disk now running on USB to allow the machine to boot from it?

    Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 I have issues with getting USB device resets on my Maxtor OneTouch USB harddrive: Nov 9 20:54:37 localhost kernel: [32459.100021] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 21:54:37 localhost kernel: [36059.100017] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 23:24:37 localhost kernel: [41459.112025] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 The device itself continues to work fine, the resets however wake the device out of its sleep state and thus cause it to spin up, which is very annoying. Interestingly, as the log shows, the resets happen at pretty regular intervals (i.e. one hour or half an hour), not randomly. An USB card reader seems to have the same issues, while another USB harddrive from a different manufactor works fine on the same PC. What could be causing this and how could I fix it?

    I want to convert some of the AVI files I recorded (presentations) to FLV so I can host them on a website and offer them to my visitors. I have done this sort of thing before but the quality they came out as would not be good enough for what I plan on doing here. So does anyone have a link to a guide or any experience they can offer in converting AVI to FLV with minimal quality loss? A lot of my presentations are 720p aswell, so I'd want to keep the aspect ratio the same as the source video. Thanks in advance.

  • Prepare bootable Mac OS install usb on Windows

    Hello, Is there any software out there that can simulate Disk Utility (Mac app) for Windows? I need to reinstall leopard on my Mac because I screwed something up on the current OS. The thing is, the DVD drive is broken on there, so I need to prepare a bootable USB drive from my Leopard DMG file. This is easily done with the Disk Utility app on the Mac. But seeing how my cannot even log on to my Mac right now, I don't know how to prepare that USB stick. The only other machine I have is a PC with Windows 7. If anyone has any suggestion, please help me out! Thanks so much!
