• VMWare player - compiling server modules - Ubuntu 13.10

  While running Ubuntu 13.04 whenever the Linux kernel had been updated, this used to make vmware player happy: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all Yesterday I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 and lo and behold, the above workaround does not work anymore: Unable to install all modules. See log for details. • wcf http 504: Working on a mystery

  Ok,  So you're here because you've been trying to solve the mystery of why you're getting a 504 error. If you've made it to this lonely corner of the Internet, then the advice you're getting from other bloggers isn't the answer you are after. It wasn't the answer I needed either, so once I did solve my problem, I thought I'd share the answer with you. For starters, if by some miracle, you landed here first you may not already know that the 504 error is NOT coming from IIS or Casini, that response code is coming from Fiddler. HTTP/1.1 504 Fiddler - Receive Failure Content-Type: text/html Connection: close Timestamp: 09:43:05.193 ReadResponse() failed: The server did not return a response for this request.       The take away here is Fiddler won't help you with the diagnosis and any further digging in that direction is a red herring. Assuming you've dug around a bit, you may have arrived at posts which suggest you may be getting the error because you're trying to hump too much data over the wire, and have an urgent need to employ an anti-pattern: due to a special case: http://delphimike.blogspot.com/2010/01/error-504-in-wcfnet-35.html Or perhaps you're experiencing wonky behavior using WCF-CustomIsolated Adapter on Windows Server 2008 64bit environment, in which case the rather fly MVP Dwight Goins' advice is what you need. http://dgoins.wordpress.com/2009/12/18/64bit-wcf-custom-isolated-%E2%80%93-rest-%E2%80%93-%E2%80%9C504%E2%80%9D-response/ For me, none of that was helpful. So I was wrong (but close!). • Best Design Pattern for Coupling User Interface Components and Data Structures

  I have a windows desktop application with a tree view. Due to lack of a sound data-binding solution for a tree view, I've implemented my own layer of abstraction on it to bind nodes to my own data structure. The requirements are as follows: Populate a tree view with nodes that resemble fields in a data structure. When a node is clicked, display the appropriate control to modify the value of that property in the instance of the data structure. The tree view is populated with instances of custom TreeNode classes that inherit from TreeNode. The responsibility of each custom TreeNode class is to (1) format the node text to represent the name and value of the associated field in my data structure, (2) return the control used to modify the property value, (3) get the value of the field in the control (3) set the field's value from the control. My custom TreeNode implementation has a property called "Control" which retrieves the proper custom control in the form of the base control. The control instance is stored in the custom node and instantiated upon first retrieval. So each, custom node has an associated custom control which extends a base abstract control class. • Laptop monitor stopped working and can't be re-enabled on a Dell Latitude E6410

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 (upgraded from 11.10), everything seemed to work fine until today when my laptop monitor suddenly stopped working. Here are the facts: My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6410, Intel graphics. External Monitor is attached through a docking station. Everything worked fine for about 6-7 month, then upgraded to 12.04 Issue started today after a week of upgrade. I think the issue started after I ran CounterStrike 1.6, both monitors blinked and then only the attached monitor which is connected to a docking station continued to work I thought at first that was a transient issue but then I've rebooted, removed the battery but the same happens. Regards, ============================= WORKAROUND FOUND ============================= So I have tried few things and here is what worked: I've installed a newer version of xserver-xorg-video-intel (2.19 vs 2.17) from ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa, it didn't work at first, it was only showing low graphics mode, so I tried with a different linux-image 3.0.0-19-generic-pae instead of 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, which I believe is 12.04 precise default, then everything started to work again, Now I've installed 3.4.0-1-generic-pae from same ppa and everything goes flawless so I believe the issue is either with linux-image 3.0.0-19-generic-pae or xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.17. Hope this helps someone in the future. • Code Contracts: validating arrays and collections

  Validating collections before using them is very common task when we use built-in generic types for our collections. In this posting I will show you how to validate collections using code contracts. It is cool how much awful looking code you can avoid using code contracts. Failing code Let’s suppose we have method that calculates sum of all invoices in collection. We have class Invoice and one of properties it has is Sum. I don’t introduce here any complex calculations on invoices because we have another problem to solve in this topic. Here is our code. public static decimal CalculateTotal(IList<Invoice> invoices) {     var sum = invoices.Sum(p => p.Sum);     return sum; } This method is very simple but it fails when invoices list contains at least one null. Of course, we can test if invoice is null but having nulls in lists like this is not good idea – it opens green way for different coding bugs in system. Our goal is to react to bugs ASAP at the nearest place they occur. There is one more way how to make our method fail. It happens when invoices is null. I thing it is also one common bugs during development and it even happens in production environments under some conditions that are usually hardly met. Now let’s protect our little calculation method with code contracts. We need two contracts: invoices cannot be null invoices cannot contain any nulls Our first contract is easy but how to write the second one? Solution: Contract.ForAll Preconditions in code are checked using Contract.Ensures method. This method takes boolean value as argument that sais if contract holds or not. There is also method Contract.ForAll that takes collection and predicate that must hold for that collection. Nice thing is ForAll returns boolean. So, we have very simple solution. public static decimal CalculateTotal(IList<Invoice> invoices) {     Contract.Requires(invoices != null);     Contract.Requires(Contract.ForAll<Invoice>(invoices, p => p != null));       var sum = invoices.Sum(p => p.Sum);     return sum; } And here are some lines of code you can use to test the contracts quickly. var invoices = new List<Invoice>(); invoices.Add(new Invoice()); invoices.Add(null); invoices.Add(new Invoice()); //CalculateTotal(null); CalculateTotal(invoices); If your code is covered with unit tests then I suggest you to write tests to check that these contracts hold for every code run. Conclusion Although it seemed at first place that checking all elements in collection may end up with for-loops that does not look so nice we were able to solve our problem nicely. ForAll method of contract class offered us simple mechanism to check collections and it does it smoothly the code-contracts-way. P.S. • NetworkManager Applet shows no networks

  I am "the friend" referred to in the questions here and here. I decided to come and ask a question myself, as I can still not connect to the wireless network. I downloaded Keryx, as suggested here, and managed to download the necessary package and its dependencies. When I attempted to install the packages on Ubuntu using Keryx, Keryx just closed. • Graphical driver 13.10 ATI RV630

  I started updating the distro from 13.04 to 13.10. Then I got my hands on a Radeon HD 2600. I installed the RV630 compatible Catalystdriver from the official webpage. Then xserver crashed everytime I opened a browser or vlc fx. Everything at my home was fine: Wireless identified and connected. As soon as I went to my girlfriend's house the trouble started. I couldn't connect to wireless (authentication... times out and asks for authentication) I started doing internet searching, tried a few solutions posted on line using terminal commands. No solutions. I decided to upgraded to 12.10-13.04 and that left me with a worse problem: I can no longer see ANY networks what so ever. Wireless card is ON, with out a doubt. Wired connection works.   I am trying to get to grips with MS Dynamics CRM 2011. I have have the beta installed on a VM and things look pretty good - some great new features etc. However I am getting an exception when trying to connect to the new XRMServices (updated 2011 WCF web services) Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service '/organame/XRMServices/2011/Organization.svc' cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation. The exception message is: 'System.ServiceModel.Description.UseRequestHeadersForMetadataAddressBehavior'. This collection only supports one instance of each type. Parameter name: item. ---> System.ArgumentException: The value could not be added to the collection, as the collection already contains an item of the same type: 'System.ServiceModel.Description.UseRequestHeadersForMetadataAddressBehavior'. This collection only supports one instance of each type. Parameter name: item The only reference to this exception I gave found suggests that it is caused by multiple bindings configured in IIS, which in my case I did have, but the problem persists even after removing them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  I have a List<MyObject> with a million elements. (It is actually a SubSonic Collection but it is not loaded from the database). I'd like to use the SqlBulkCopy.WriteToServer method that uses an IDataReader instead of a DataTable so that I don't duplicate my collection in memory. What's the easiest way to get an IDataReader from my list? I suppose I could implement a custom data reader (like here http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/aviwortzel/archive/2008/05/06/implementing-sqlbulkcopy-in-linq-to-sql.aspx) , but there must be something simpler I can do without writing a bunch of generic code. Edit: It does not appear that one can easily generate an IDataReader from a collection of objects. Accepting current answer even though I was hoping for something built into the framework.

• WPF binding to ComboBox SelectedItem when reference not in ItemsSource.

  I'm binding the PageMediaSize collection of a PrintQueue to the ItemSource of a ComboBox (This works fine). Then I'm binding the SelectedItem of the ComboBox to the DefaultPrintTicket.PageMediaSize of the PrintQueue. While this will set the selected value to the DefaultPrintTicket.PageMediaSize just fine it does not set the initially selected value of the ComboBox to the initial value of DefaultPrintTicket.PageMediaSize This is because the DefaultPrintTicket.PageMediaSize reference does not match any of the references in the collection. However I don't want it to compare the objects by reference, but instead by value, but PageMediaSize does not override Equals (and I have no control over it). What I'd really like to do is setup a IComparable for the ComboBox to use, but I don't see any way to do that. I've tried to use a Converter, but I would need more than the value and I couldn't figured out how to pass the collection to the ConverterProperty. Any ideas on how to handle this problem. • FxCop hates my usage of MVVM

  I've just started to work with FxCop to see how poorly my code does against its full set of rules. I'm starting off with the "Breaking" rules, and the first one I came across was CA2227, which basically says that you should make a collection property's setter readonly, so that you can't accidentally change the collection data. Since I'm using MVVM, I've found it very convenient to use an ObservableCollection with get/set properties because it makes my GUI updates easy and concise in the code-behind. However, I can also see what FxCop is complaining about. Another situation that I just ran into is with WF, where I need to set the parameters when creating the workflow, and I'd hate to have to write a wrapper class around the collection I'm using just to avoid this particular error message. For example, here's a sample runtime error message that I get when I make properties readonly: The activity 'MyWorkflow' has no public writable property named 'MyCollectionOfStuff' What are you opinions on this? I could either ignore this particular error, but that's probably not good because I could conceivably violate this rule elsewhere in the code where MVVM doesn't apply (model only code, for example). I think I could also change it from a property to a class with methods to manipulate the underlying collection, and then raise the necessary notification from the setter method. I'm a little confused... can anyone shed some light on this?

  I am trying to use lazy="extra" for the child collection of Trades I have on my Client object. The trades is an Iset<Trade Trades, exposed as ReadOnlyCollection<Trade because I do not want anyone to modify the collection directly. As a result, I have added AddTrade and RemoveTrade methods. Now I have a Client Search page where I need to show the Trade Count. and on the Client details page I have a tab where I need to show all the trades for the Client in paged gridview. What I want to achieve is, for the search when I say on the client object as client.Trades.Count, nHibernate should only fire a select count(*) query. Hence I am using lazy="extra". But because I am using a ReadOnlyCollection, nHibernate fires a count query & a separate query to load the child collection trades completely. Also, I cannot include the Trades in my initial search request as this would disturb the paging because a counterparty can have n trades which would result in n rows, when I am searching clients only. So the child collections have to be loaded lazily. The second problem is that on the client details page -- Trades grid view, I have enabled paging for performance reasons. But by nature nHibernate loads the entire collection of trades as the user goes from one page to another. Ideally I want to control this by getting only trades specific to the page the user is on. How can I achieve this? I came across this very good article. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/876976/implementing-ipagedlistt-on-my-models-using-nhibernate But I am not sure if this will work for me, as lazy=extra currently doesnt work as expected with the ReadOnlyCollection. So, if I went ahead and implemented the solution this way and further enhanced it by making the List/Set Immutable, will lazy=extra give me the same problem as with ReadOnlyCollections?

A user able to select or remove (by selecting check box) product’s from the view, finally save as a collection when user submit these changes. With this 3 layer design how this product collection will be saved? How the filtering of products (removal and addition) to the category object? Here are my options. (A) It is the responsibility of the controller then the pseudo Code would be Find products that the user selected or removed and compare with existing records. Add or delete that collection to category object. Call SaveCategory(category); // BLL CALL Here the first 2 process steps occurs in the controller. (B) It is the responsibility of BLL then pseudo Code would be Collect products what ever user selected SaveCategory(category, products); // BLL CALL Here it's up to the SaveCategory (BLL) to decide what products should be removed and added to the database.   Hi I can't get my WCF service to work with more than one http binding. In IIS 7 I have to bindings http:/service and http:/service.test both at port 80 In my web.config I have added the baseAddressPrefixFilters but I can't add more than one <serviceHostingEnvironment> <baseAddressPrefixFilters> <add prefix="http://service"/> <add prefix="http://service.test"/> </baseAddressPrefixFilters> </serviceHostingEnvironment> This gives almost the same error "This collection already contains an address with scheme http. • How to make Fluent NHibernate ignore Dictionary properties

  I'm trying to make Fluent NHibernate's automapping ignore a Dictionary property on one of my classes, but Fluent is ignoring me instead. Ignoring other types of properties seems to work fine, but even after following the documentation and adding an override for the Dictionary, I still get the following exception when BuildSessionFactory is called: The type or method has 2 generic parameter(s), but 1 generic argument(s) were provided. A generic argument must be provided for each generic parameter. I've tried overriding by property name: .Override<MyClass>(map => { map.IgnoreProperty(x => x.MyDictionaryProperty); }) and also tried implementing ignores using a custom attribute, both of which result in the same exception from BuildSessionFactory. The only thing so far that makes this exception go away is removing the Dictionary property entirely. My question seems to be identical to this one which was never answered (though I'll expand the scope by stating it doesn't matter whether the dictionary is on an abstract base class; the problem always happens for me regardless of what class the property is on). Any takers this time around?

However, is the following <url-pattern>/javax.faces.resource/*</url-pattern> the correct way to allow all resources? I only did this by looking at the url that Facelets injects into the xhtml. Is there security holes with this approach? Thanks.

• [Smalltalk] Store List of Instruction

  Hi all, I have a design Problem. i have a Drawer class wich invokes a serie of methods of a kind-of-brush class and i have a predefined shapes which i want to draw. Each shape uses a list of instance methods from the drawer. I can have more than 1 brush object. I want to add custom shapes on runtime in the drawer instance, especifying the list of methods of the new shape. i've created a class method for every predefined shape that returns a BlockClosure with the instruccions. Obviously i have to give to each BlockClosure the brush object as parameter. I imagine a collection with all the BlockClosures in each instance of the Drawer Class. Maybe i can inherit a SequenceableCollection and make a instruccion collection. Each element of the collection it's a instruction and i give the brush object when i instance this new collection. I really don't know the best way to store these steps. (Maybe a shared variable?)

• How to use XPath to filter elements by TextContent? get parent by axis?

  Hi all: I've found a similar question on SO, however, that seems not exactly what I wanna achieve: Say, this is a sample XML file: <root> <item> <id isInStock="true">10001</id> <category>Loose Balloon</category> </item> <item> <id isInStock="true">10001</id> <category>Bouquet Balloon</category> </item> <item> <id isInStock="true">10001</id> <category>Loose Balloon</category> </item> </root> If I wanna get a "filtered" subset of the item elements from this XML, how could I use an XPath expression to directly address that? XPathExpression expr = xpath.compile("/root/item/category/text()"); I now know this would evaluate to be the collection of all the TextContent from the categories, however, that means I have to use a collection to store the values, then iterate, then go back to grab other related info such as the item id again. Another question is : how could I refer to the parent node properly? Say, this xpath expression would get me the collection of all the id nodes, right? But what I want is the collection of item nodes: XPathExpression expr = xpath.compile("/root/item/id[@isInStock='true']"); I know I should use the "parent" axis to refer to that, but I just cannot make it right... Is there a better way of doing this sort of thing? Learning the w3cschools tutorials now... Sorry I am new to XPath in Java, and thanks a lot in advance.
