• Parsing NTFS Partition in C

  Hello all, I'm just a beginner and I have a need to parse a NTFS partition for the purpose of extracting Security Descriptors. (I been trying to use the native functions of the Windows API, but my conclusion is that something is seriously wrong with the functions' behavior, or their documentation.) I was wondering if anybody here experienced with such requirement, and could give me few hints, references, guidance... where to begin? (I've found www.ntfs.com, seems to have NTFS structure information, but I'm afraid I'll need something more to get started...) My intention is to use it under Windows XP. • Do we really need a safe release macro?

  Quite a lot of people seem to use a macro such as #define SAFE_RELEASE(X) [X release]; X = nil; (myself included). I've been reassessing why I am using it and wanted to canvas some opinion. The purpose (I think) for using this macro is so that if you were to accidentally use your object after releasing it then you won't get a bad access exception because objective-c will quite happily ignore it when the object is nil. It strikes me that this has the potential to mask some obscure bugs. Maybe it would actually be preferable for the program to crash when you try to use X again. That way during testing you can find the issue and improve the code. Does this macro encourage lazy programming? Thoughts?

• Is it really wrong to version documents using CouchDB's behaviour?

  This is one of those "I know I shouldn't do this but it's oh so convenient." questions. Sorry about that. I plan to use CouchDB for storing a bunch of documents and keeping their entire revision history. CouchDB does the versioning automatically, but it is strongly discouraged for programmer's use: "You cannot rely on document revisions for any other purpose than concurrency control." From what I've found on the CouchDB wiki, the versions can get deleted either during compaction or during replication. As far as I can tell, Compaction must always be triggered manually and Replication occurs only when there's more than one database server. The question is: if I won't run compaction and will use only single database instance for my documents, can I just use CouchDB's document versioning and expect it to work? What other problems I might run into? E.g. does not running compaction hurt the performance or consume significantly more disk space (than if I did handle the versioning manually)?

• Execute a dll function in ASP.Net Bin not working, II7.

  I am developing a remote control application where a client (aspx page in a browser) can request a server to "launch a notepad" (for testing purpose, for real life, turning off a light bulb, etc). So I created a dll with a simple function for launching the notepad (on the server side) and dropped this dll in the root bin folder. It worked fine when the aspx page is running under ASP.NET development server (launched from Visual Studio). But when I tested the same aspx page under a FireFox browser, it did not work (launch the notepad) even though it did call for the same function (I stepped through in debugger). Is this a permission issue? How do I set this up in IIS manager, or even better in web.config? Please help.

• C# - A good library to fake Time.Now?

  Hi, In order to Unit-Test a feature, I need to fake DateTime.Now. Something like: SupposeNowIs(new DateTime(..)); I can either use a third library that does it, or write my own little class. What do you recommand? Do you know any good library for this purpose? How would you fake time in C#? By changing DateTime.Now? (I suppose it's read only?). Thank you!

• Is it immoral to put a captcha on a login form?

  In a recent project I put a captcha test on a login form, in order to stop possible brute force attacks. The immediate reaction of other coworkers was a request to remove it, saying that it was inapropiate for that purpose, and that it was quite exotic to see a captcha in that place. I've seen captcha images on signup, contact, password recovery forms, etc. So I personally don't see inapropiate to put a captcha also on a place like that. Well, it obviously burns down usability a little bit, but it's a matter of time and getting used to it. With the lack of a captcha test, one would have to put some sort of blacklist / account locking mechanism, which also has some drawbacks. Is it a good choice for you? Am I getting somewhat captcha-aholic and need some sort of group therapy? Thanks in advance.

• Force IOException during file reading

  I have the piece of code that reads data from file. I want to force IOException in this code for testing purpose (I want to check if code throws correct custom exception in this case). Is there a some way to create a file which is protected from being read, for example? Maybe dealing with some security checks can help? Please, note that passing name to not-existent file cannot help, because FileNotFoundException has separate catch clause. • ASP .NET - What's going on behind an Eval() ?

  Hi, I'm trying to understand how Eval() works for a specific purpose. I'm working on a project I don't really know and I need to read some data and put them in drop down list. These data are already read and are displayed inside an ItemTemplate. I noticed there are read using the Eval() method. Something like: <ItemTemplate> <a href="...=<%# Eval("foo") %>></a> </ItemTemplate> I need to know where Eval is getting these data from in order to discover where I should read them for my drop down list! But I didn't really understand how it works! I know that Eval() evaluates data binding expressions at runtime but where do you think I should take a look at? Thank you

  For educational purpose, I am writing a server instance in GCE(google compute engine) to serve a few web apps mostly (to be) written in Dart and Polymer. My workflow is, when my students log-in the server above, they will automatically fork those web apps into their own registries in their own server instances for further development.   Hello, Consider this code running on my microcontroller unit(MCU): while(1){ do_stuff; if(packet_from_PC) send_data_via_gpio(new_packet); //send via general purpose i/o pins else send_data_via_gpio(default_packet); do_other_stuff; } The MCU is also interfaced to a PC via a UART.Whenever the PC sends data to the MCU, the *new_packet* is sent, otherwise the *default_packet* is sent.Each packet can be 5 or more bytes with a pre defined packet structure. My question is: 1.Should i receive the entire packet from PC using inside the UART interrut service routine (ISR)? In this case, i have to implement a state machine inside the ISR to assemble the packet (which can be lengthy with if-else or switch-case blocks). 2.Detect a REQUEST command (one byte)from the PC in my ISR set a flag, diable UART interrupt alone and form the packet in my while(1) loop by polling the UART?

These items follow fixed HTML template (table,image) and only specific content fields (name, body text..) can be change in the back-end. Backend users can add new pages or new items each page. • SDL versus GLFW?

  What are the pros and cons to each? It seems they serve the same purpose. I have a few demos with each and they seem about the same. Performance or cross platform wise, is one better than the other? The only thing I notice is that SDL seems to have more "helper" libraries (fonts, images, mixer, built in sound support, etc). On its site, GLFW claims to be more "OpenGL" focused, but still have to use a GLEW to get any newer OpenGL features (same with SDL). I guess I'm leaning towards using SDL now (more mature, more features, more community). Are there any reasons I've missed why GLFW stands out and I should use it instead of SDL?

  Trying to understand vectors a bit more. What is the need for normalizing a vector? If I have a vector, N = (x, y, z) What do you actually get when you normalize it - I get the idea you have to divide x/|N| y/|N| & z/|N|. My question is, why do we do this thing, I mean what do we get out of this equation? What is the meaning or 'inside' purpose of doing this. A bit of a maths question, I apologize, but I am really not clear in this topic.

  I'm in the designing stages of a custom tcp/ip protocol for mobile client-server communication. When not required (data is not sensitive), I'd like to avoid using SSL for overhead reasons (both in handshake latency and conserving cycles). My question is, what is the best practices way of transmitting authentication information over an unencrypted connection? Currently, I'm liking SRP or J-PAKE (they generate secure session tokens, are hash/salt friendly, and allow kicking into TLS when necessary), which I believe are both implemented in OpenSSL. However, I am a bit wary since I don't see many people using these algorithms for this purpose. Would also appreciate pointers to any materials discussing this topic in general, since I had trouble finding any.

  Hi, I want to store / save personal preference settings like Email, Phone number for an App. I have few forms which send info by Email to my ID. I want to know the Email & Phone number of user so I can contact this person if need be. I don't want users to keep entering their Email ID & Phone No. everytime in each form. It's wise to take these inputs (Email & Phone) just once per device / per App installed on the device. I am trying to use .plist for this purpose. I have no success. How do I do it? • Learning rails and AJAX. How do I load a div via ajax and then toggle hiding/showing it?

  I'm doing my first Ruby on Rails project. I am working on a project where the user can add a new message. Then they can add updates to this message like a thread. I've got it all written and now I'm going back and applying some AJAX. I want to show just the main message when the page first loads. Then when I click a link I want an AJAX event to fire that populates a div with all the updates to the message. Then I want this same link to toggle hiding and showing the div. I've made a submit button to fire the ajax and get back the updates using form_remote_tag. I've also created a separate link to toggle the hiding using $(div_id).toggle();. But now I'm stuck on how to combine these two things into one all purpose link. Thanks.

  Is it possible to remove than add back click event to specific element? i.e I have a $("#elem").click(function{//some behaviour});, $(".elem").click(function{//some behaviour});(there are more than 1 element) while my other function getJson is executing I'd like to remove the click event from the #elem, and add it again onsuccess from getJson function, but preserve both mouseenter and mouseleave events the whole time? Or maybe create overlay to prevent clicking like in modal windows? is that better idea? edit : I've seen some really good answers, but there is one detail that I omitted not on purpose. There are more than one element, and I call the click function on the className not on elementId as I stated in the original question

  Hi, I'm working on a small academic research about extremely long and complicated functions in the Linux kernel. I'm trying to figure out if there is a good reason to write 600 or 800 lines-long functions. For that purpose, I would like to find a tool that can extract a function from a .c file, so I can run some automated tests on the function. For example, If I have the function cifs_parse_mount_options() within the file connect.c, I'm seeking a solution that would roughly work like: extract /fs/cifs/connect.c cifs_parse_mount_options and return the 523 lines of code(!) of the function, from the opening braces to the closing braces. Of course, any way of manipulating existing software packages like gcc to do that, would be most helpful too. • Cannot use String.Empty as a default value for an optional parameter in C# - then what's the point?

  I am reading Effective C# by Bill Wagner. In Item 14 - Minimize Duplicate Initialization Logic, he shows the following example of using the new optional parameters feature in a constructor: public MyClass(int initialCount = 0, string name = "") Notice that he used "" instead of string.Empty. He comments: You'll note [in an example above] that the second constructor specified "" for the default value on the name parameter, rather than the more customary string.Empty. That's because string.Empty is not a compile-time constant. It is a static property defined in the string class. Because it is not a compile constant, you cannot use it for the default value for a parameter. If we cannot use the string.Empty static in all situations, then doesn't that defeat the purpose of it? I thought that we would use it to be sure that we have a system-independent means of referring to the empty string. Is my understanding wrong? Thanks.
