  • Can't update BIOS on Dell E6530

    I have a problem with the video output on my E6530. It does not show anything during POST on my external screens. As it seems this is related to A09 BIOS which is currently installed. I wanted to upgrade to A11 BIOS and downloaded the installer from the Dell Website. The installer launches correctly and displays the current version, the update versions and reboots the system afterwards. Bit the BIOS version remains A09. I have no idea where to start troubleshooting. Any hints? Thank you very much. System Spec: OS: Windows 7 x64 SP1 AV: Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8.1 UAC: Disabled, my user is in the Administrators group

    This is driving me bananas! After a recent update in Fedora 13 64bit, my yum is gone: $> yum update There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. I tried looking for an RPM yum package - to install yum. I went to the Fedora site: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Tools/yum Call me blind but I cannot find it anywhere on that page! Most of the solutions suggest repairing yum... with yum! But I don't have yum? Yum yum yum? :< Any help?   • Powering-down USB Powered Devices on laptop sleep

    I recently purchased a Targus Lap Chill Mat, which is a USB powered device, but doesn't have any interface/storage/etc function. I'd like it to power-down when my (macbook) laptop sleeps (since the fan obviously doesn't need to be running when the laptop is idle) without having to unplug it. Any suggestions?

  • windows xp mode for windows 7 - save text input language settings

    When I change the 'default language' in 'text services and input languages' in windows xp mode from EN-US to DE-DE the settings are reverted with the next logoff / reboot - EN-US is the default language again. Is there a way around this behaviour? I'm using the default 'XPMUser' in windows xp mode. I also checked 'turn off advanced text services' and disabled the language bar and windows xp remembers these settings - just not the default language..

    What happens when a Windows 7 backup disk is full? I've been trying to find documentation on the issue without success. Does Windows 7 automatically delete the oldest backup files to free up space or does it force you manually pick and choose which files to delete? Time Machine automatically deletes the oldest copy of files, but as far as I can tell Windows 7 makes you manually choose. I keep getting a running out of disk space for backup notice on Windows 7 without any option to not warn me and just delete the oldest files automatically...

  • Windows Mobile Signature Capture and Barcode Scanning

    Currently I have 7 Motorola MC75 Phones all running Windows Mobile 6.1 and using PTS Tracer Plus for signature capture and barcode scanning. After multiple returns with Motorola, and have verizon verify the data connections on all my phones in the field. I have found that PTS Tracer Plus 5, is the culprit in freezing and crashing before, during, and after signature collection. Does anyone know of another software package for Windows Mobile 6.1 that does signature capture and barcode scanning? I'm also going to try PTS Wireless 6 beta1 as well too, but I would like to know what other peopel are using successfully. Thanks!

    I'm trying to get my TV (connected via HDMI cable) to act as a second monitor to watch video etc. The TV is to my left, so in Display Preferences I unticked "Mirror Screens" and put the monitors like this: -------- ---------- | PC | | TV | | | ---------- -------- When I do this, the PC monitor comes up with just the desktop wallpaper and the interface - taskbar and windows, etc - moves to the TV screen. But if I swap the monitors around, the taskbars are still on the TV screen, with the windows (and desktop icons) on the PC screen. Is there a way to set the computer monitor as the main one and the TV as the second screen? PC: Dell Inspiron 531 Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 720N TV: Philips 26PFL5522D LCD TV

  • What does 1080p mean in laptop resolution?

    Dell is selling a laptop (Studio 15) where the options for screen resolution are 720p, 900p, and 1080p. What do they mean? I've found a Wikipedia entry that lists the old confusing (UXGA, WUXGA, &c) names and seems to indicate that 1080p might be 1920x1080. It has no information on 900p or 720p. Really, it was bad enough with the WUXGA style descriptions. I think vendors should tell you what they're selling. If you know what the screen resolutions are, I'd appreciate hearing it here.

    Hi all, I have a Samsung N120 netbook (with upgraded 2GB RAM). I'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but when I set my partitions, I get an error. The setup I want right now is: Recovery Partition - 6 GB Windows XP Home Partition - 40 GB General Partition - remaining space UNR Partition - 40 GB I am told that I need to resize a partition and it will take a while. However, when it nearly starts, I get an ERROR!!! dialog that says, "Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda5 - Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes you made to /dev/sda5 so you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting." I'm not too sure what I should do right now... any ideas?     I have XP Mode installed fine, but the shipped Windows XP installation is too heavy. I tried to install a light XP using my ASUS Eee PC. After installation, I have to install a few missing drivers and everything worked OK except I can't copy and paste between host and guest operating system. I checked Device Manager and found the Virtual PC Integration Device is not installed correctly. I can't find any driver for that. How can I fix this problem?

  • Iomega eGo Encrypt Plus Encrypted Partition not mounting properly says "local disk"

    I'm working with an Iomega eGo 500gb Encrypt Plus portable drive. When I first set it up and installed the software and set a user password everything worked fine. The partition labeled "IomegaHDD" mounted properly and I could access the free space. Then I changed the ADMIN password which required me to lockout the device, wait 60 seconds, and then login to the Admin section and change the password, lockout the device again, wait 60 seconds, and then log back in with my user password. When I did that it of course unmounted the IomegaHDD partition to secure it, when it remounts it, it only shows up as "local disk" now and will not remount properly. I had not removed the cable while doing any of this. I have since tried unplugging and plugging back in to login to the drove but that has not worked. I'm wondering if I should remove every instance of "generic usb hub" from device manager and wait for it to re-add itself, or move it to a new set of USB ports temporarily to seee if that helps. Any ideas?

    How can the CMOS be cleared on the Toshiba Satellite A55-S1065? I have this 7 year old laptop that has been crippled by a glitch in its BIOS: 'A "Password =" prompt may be displayed when the computer is turned on, even though no power-on password has been set. If this happens, there is no password that will satisfy the password request. The computer will be unusable until this problem is resolved. [..] The occurrence of this problem on any particular computer is unpredictable -- it may never happen, but it could happen any time that the computer is turned on. [..] Toshiba will cover the cost of this repair under warranty until Dec 31, 2010.' -Toshiba As they stated, this machine is "unusable." The escape key does not bypass the prompt (nor does any other key), thus no operating system can be booted and no firmware updates can be installed. After doing some research, I found solutions that have been suggested for various Toshiba Satellite models afflicted by this glitch: "Make arrangements with a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider to have this problem resolved." -Toshiba (same link). Even prior to the expiration of Toshiba's support ("repair under warranty until Dec 31, 2010"), there have been reports that this solution is prohibitively expensive, labor charges accruing even when the laptop is still under warranty, and other reports that are generally discouraging: "They were unable to fix it and the guy who worked on it said he couldn’t find the jumpers on the motherboard to clear the BIOS. I paid $39 for my troubles and still have the password problem." - Steve. Since the costs of the repairs can now exceed the value of the hardware, it would seem this is a DIY solution, or a non-solution (i.e. the hardware is trash). Build a Toshiba parallel loopback by stripping and soldering the wires on a DB25 plug to connect connect these pins: 1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15, 18-25. -CGSecurity. According to a list of supported models on pwcrack, this will likely not work for my Satellite A55-1065 (as well as many other models of similar age). -pwcrack Disconnect the laptop battery for an extended period of time. Doesn't work, laptop sat in a closet for several years without the battery connected and I forgot about the whole thing for awhile. The poor thing. Clear CMOS by setting the proper jumper setting or by removing the CMOS (RTC) battery, or by short circuiting a (hidden?) jumper that looks like a pair of solder marks -various sources for various Satellite models: Satellite A105: "you will see C88 clearly labeled right next the jack that the wireless card plugs into. There are two little solder squares (approx 1/16") at this location" -kerneltrap Satellite 1800: "Underneath the RAM there is black sticker, peel off the black sticker and you will reveal two little solder marks which are actually 'jumpers'. Very carefully hold a flat-head screwdriver touching both points and power on the unit briefly, effectively 'shorting' this circuit." -shadowfax2020 Satellite L300: "Short the B500 solder pads on the system board." -Lester Escobar Satellite A215: "Short the B500 solder pads on the system board." -fixya Clearing the CMOS could resolve the issue, but I cannot locate a jumper or a battery on this board. Nothing that looks remotely like a battery can be removed (everything is soldered). I have looked closely at the area around the memory and do not see any obvious solder pads that could be a secret jumper.   • Why is my Current Printer unavailable in Office ?

    Whenever I try to print any document from Microsoft Office 2007 in Windows Vista 64-bit there is a great possibility that the print job will fail with the following error message: Current printer is unavailable. Select another printer. Only problem is no printer works, not even Bullzip PDF Printer. The only way to resolve this that I have found so far is a reboot, but I don't want to do that all the time. I am using Windows Vista 64-bit. I've had the problem using both SP1 and SP2. The problem occurs on both locally installed and network printers, as well as the virtual printer Bullzip PDF Printer. My primary source of the problem has been Excel, but the error has also occurred in Word. Changing the default printer and restarting the Microsoft Office-application solves this temporarily, but not permanently. Google:ing the error message returns a lot of questions but no solutions, so seems like a frequent problem. What could be a permanent solution for this problem? UPDATE: It seems that my problem stems from me opening MS Office applications by opening a document from Total Commander with administrative rights. This somehow makes the applications not find the printers. Opening MS Office applications either from the Start menu or by opening a document in a non-administrator Explorer allows me to print.

    When you are browsing a network share and there are over 1000 folders in the root (like at work), is there a way to prevent Explorer from expanding all the Folders when you have the "Folders" view enabled? Explorer will open the folder your double clicked on, and show that in the right navigation pane, and it's great, but wait about five seconds and the rest of the folder list pops into view, I'd rather that not happen. There is only one folder I'm interested in (or have access to), and it's annoying waiting for Explorer to load the rest of the files.
