  • How to disable “smart quotes” in Windows Live Mail?

    Windows Live Mail by default changes straight quotation marks (" and ') to typographic quotation marks, aka "smart quotes" (“, ”, ‘ and ’). This often results in the recipient of the email seeing blank rectangles or other symbols instead of the smart quotes, due to encoding problems. Unlike in most programs, there's doesn't seem to be any built-in option to disable this, and searching online for solutions only leads to workarounds, like hitting Backspace immediately after typing a single or double quote, and switching to "Plain text" mode. Is there any way to disable this behaviour?

  • Mount points disappear from network share directory listing

    When browsing a network share which contains volume mount points, said mount points disappear from the directory listing. The mount points are still accessible directly by path, just not present in the directory listing. The machine is a Vista SP1 32 bit machine. It has a network share that contains volume mount points to the volumes of the Vista machine (created using the SetVolumeMountPoint API). When browsing the network share from another computer (either Win7 64 bit, Win7 32 bit or Vista SP1 32 bit) using Windows Explorer the following problem occurs: First, both volume mount points called C, D appear fine. I browse into directory C and see all its contents properly. I go back to the root of the shared folder and now I only see D. C has disappeared from the directory listing. I enter D and see all its contents. Go back to the root of the shared folder and now it's empty. D disappeared as well. If I manually go to \\<path to shared folder>\C from the address bar - then all is fine and I can browse its contents (same with D). The same issue does NOT occur when creating a similar share with volume mount points on Windows XP SP2 or SP3. Has anyone came across this problem? Any ideas how to work around it?

    The installation notes (git://gitorious.org/python-markdown/mainline.git) say in the file using_as_module.txt One of the parameters that you can pass is a list of Extensions. Extensions must be available as python modules either within the markdown.extensions package or on your PYTHONPATH with names starting with mdx_, followed by the name of the extension. Thus, extensions=['footnotes'] will first look for the module markdown.extensions.footnotes, then a module named mdx_footnotes. See the documentation specific to the extension you are using for help in specifying configuration settings for that extension. I put the folder "extensions" to ~/bin/python/ such that my PYTHONPATH is the following export PYTHONPATH=/Users/masi/bin/python/:/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/ The instructions say that I need to import the addons such that import markdown import <module-name> However, I cannot see any module in my Python. This suggests me that the extensions are not available as "python modules - - on [my] PYTHONPATH with names starting with mdx_ - -." How can you get Markdown's extensions to work? 2nd attempt I run at ~/bin/markdown git clone git://gitorious.org/python-markdown/mainline.git python-markdown cd python-markdown python setup.py install I put the folder /Users/masi/bin/markdown/python-markdown/build to my PATH because the installation message suggests me that is the new location of the extensions. I have the following in a test markdown -document [TOC] -- headings here with # -format --- However, I do not get the table of contents. This suggests me that we need to somehow activate the extensions when we compile by the markdown.py -script. **The problem returns to my first quoted text which I is rather confusing to me.

  • Audio Static/Interference regardless of audio interface?

    I currently am running a media center/server on a Lubuntu machine. The machine specs: Core 2 Duo Extreme EVGA SLI 680i MotherBoard 2 GB DDR2 Ram 3 Hard Drives no raid - WD Caviar Black, Green, and Samsung Spinpoint Galaxy GTX 220 1GB External USB Creative XI-FI Extreme Card 550W Power Supply This machine is hooked up through an optical cable to an ONKYO HTR340 Receiver through the XIFI card. Whenever I play any audio regardless if it is through XBMC, the default audio player, a flash video, etc, I get a horrible static sound that randomly gets louder. Here is a video of the sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqKQkxYRVA4 This static comes in randomly, sometimes going away for short periods, but eventually always comes back. So far I have tried everything I could think of: Reinstalling OS Installing/upgrading/repairing PulseAudio/Alsa Installing alternate OSes, straight Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Arch, Mint, Windows 7 Switching audio from the external card to internal Optical, audio out through HDMI, audio out through headphones Different ports on receiver (my main desktop sounds fine on the same sound system) Different optical cables Unplugging everything unnecessary from the motherboard (1 HD, 1 Stick of Ram, 1 Keyboard) Swapping out ram Swapping out the motherboard Replacing the Graphics Card (was replaced due to fan being noisy, not specifically for this problem) Different harddrives Swapping power supply Disabling onboard audio Pretty much everything short of swapping the CPU. I haven't been able to narrow down the problem and it is getting frustrating. Is it possible that the CPU is faulty and might cause a problem such as this, or that the PC case is shorting out the motherboard? Any kind of suggestions will be appreciated.

I can capture the hot keys for these functions, but I can't find a way to capture the same functions when the user clicks on the icon on the standard toolbar or when the user uses the menu to select the function.

  • Overlapping dual monitors

    I have dual monitor setup and I was wondering if there's a way to specifiy an overlap between the 2 displays. Ideally, the area where the 2 monitors cross over would be repeated on both monitors (ven diagram-ish). Currently the display settings can only work when they're adjacent. On a side note, is it possible to seperate the monitors so that there's an assumed space between the displays? I'm currently running windows 7.

    I am currently running Windows XP Professional on my computer. My configuration is Intel Dual Core 3.00 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB HDD. Sometimes, the computer just restarts without any particular reason. After restarting, I get an error report, "Windows has just recovered from a serious error." Such incidents happen once in 5-6 days. I don't face any other problems apart from this. Also, I don't face this problem in Ubuntu Karmic Koala though.

Here are the main things that I will be using the Mac Mini for. git Repositories (via Gitosis) build server (build projects in git repositories using commit hooks and run tests) simple websites (PHP) learning C++ in a non-Windows environment What distribution would you recommend? Please provide some detail in your answer so that I can make an meaningful decision. Because I am looking to use the mini as more of a server than a normal desktop machine I was thinking of Ubuntu Server, I'm not sure if that is over kill though given the hardware I am using.

The the file is displayed, but the text is truncated (not rectangular, just after some character limit). How to display the whole file?     I am having some trouble setting up Dynamic DNS with my Fritz!Box 7360. I have set up the Dynamic DNS page with (this is translated from German, so might be worded a bit differently): [x] Use dynamic DNS Dynamic DNS Provider: User defined Update-URL: https://freedns.afraid.org/dynamic/update.php?MY-DIRECT-URL-KEY Domain Name: mydomain.crabdance.com User Name: myusername Password: mypassword Now on the FritzBox status page, it says: Dynamic DNS: activated, mydomain.crabdance.com, Status: Account temprarily deactivated When I check back on http://freedns.afraid.org, my IP address never changes. Is there any way to fix this? Note my router is on an IPv6 network (m-net), with IPv4 only through DS-Lite. I'm not sure whether this affects anything. Update: Following the guide here (putting myusername instead of MY-DIRECT-URL-KEY) hasn't given any succes. However, the status field has changed slightly: Dynamic DNS: activated, mydomain.crabdance.com, Status: unknown

  • Configure a wireless network that accepts any WPA2-PSK network key

    I recently bought a UART WiFi module ( this one ) and configured it with right SSID but wrong password( and I don't know what it is ). The problem is that I can't reset this module to its manufacture settings and I can't connect to this module via serial port to configure it with some wire or cable. But I'm sure that my module is trying to connect my access point but with wrong network key ( because in logs of my access point I can see my module that trying to connect but it can't ) So, I wonder to know is there any way to create or configure a network (using some access point or something else) based on WPA2 Personal security that accepts any WPA2-PSK passwords ? Or is there any other solution for this problem ? If no, is there anyway to see what password this module using to connect to that network ? ( If yes, then I can change password of my network to that password and access to this module's admin panel ) I tried create an open network ( without any security key ) but my module just searches for WPA2 based networks ( I think ).

  • Non-functioning AutoFilter on Locked Cells in Office 2008 - works in Office 2007

    I'm looking into a problem for someone, who works in a mixed OS environment. She has created an Excel spreadsheet in Office 2007 to act as a directory, with AutoFilter turned on for names, email addresses, departments etc. To make sure no one accidentally edits email addresses (for example), she has protected the work sheet. Accessing this worksheet on a PC running Excel 2007, everything runs as you'd expect. You can filter the sheet by any of the auto-filtered columns, and because the sheet is protected, the data integrity is guaranteed. However, if you access the sheet on a Mac running Excel 2008, you can't filter the columns. What's strange here is that the AutoFilter dropdown arrows do appear in each of the column headers as you would expect. It's just that nothing happens if you click on them. If you select one of the column header cells (say, 'First Name') and check the menu: Data-Filter, you can see that AutoFilter is ticked. As another datapoint, you also seem to be able to apply an Advanced filter to these rows on the protected sheets. Does anyone know why this might be? It seems to be a compatibility issue between Excel 2007/2008 (I know the codebase isn't the same), but I can't find any references to it in documentation or forums anywhere, and it would be good to know if there's a way around this.     I have a VM with RHEL 5 without an X server. My host has Windows 7. I need to connect to the VM and redirect the X11 output of the commands to my host. I know that if my host were a GNU/Linux machine it would be as easy as ssh -X . I'm ussing PuTTy to connect by SSH to the VM, I tried enabling X11 forward option in PuTTy config, but nothing happened. Have you ever done this? I'm quite advanced with GNU/Linux, but a newbie with this toy of Winbug$ 7.

  • Ubuntu: Failure to login with multiple video adapters

    Forgive my ignorance, for I am a complete linux noob. I have a computer with three video cards and six monitors. Works great on Windows. Trying to get it to run Ubuntu as well. It loads fine when I have it configured to run on one adapter; detects both screens, runs ok. But I want to turn the other 4 monitors on and run the whole thing as one extended desktop (one session, etc). So I downloaded and installed the newest ATI driver for Linux, which seems to work, kinda. I ran this to set up the screens: aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f Now when I boot, Ubuntu seems to turn on all the screens (3 viewports, each with two cloned displays from what I can tell). When I enter my login info OR move the mouse off the main screen, the screens freeze and the kbd/ms become unresponsive. aticonfig generated xorg.conf included below. Have tried the following: aticonfig -initial -f - works, but only detects the primary adapter and 2 screens aticccle - Tells me I have to reboot after enabling the other cards. Then goes into above described freezing state. aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f - see above Manually editing xorg.conf file with my limited knowledge - Was able to get two adapters running, but only the second adapter initialized while the primary stopped at the Ubuntu boot screen. Was unable to see the login prompt. Froze after I logged in blindly (was able to hear the login sound). Using generic "radeon" driver instead of ATI Proprietary driver with the above init attempts Toggling xinerama Various combinations of the above Hardware: Intel Core 2 Quad q6600 8GB DDR2 (3x) ATI Radeon HD 4680 5 monitors (21W, 21W, 22W Portrait, 22W Portrait, 19")and an HDTV (26"W, HDMI) in a horizontal arrangement I know next to nothing about Linux/Ubuntu aside from basic filesystem navigation, editing text files, and accessing my local and networked Windows stores and shares. Basically this is the most advanced thing I've had to do. I installed today.   • touch pad randomly stopped working on ubuntu desktop

    Question: What steps can I take to make a touchpad that once worked, work again. Info: I'm running ubuntu desktop on my net book. it has been working more or less fine. There have been some minor issues. but nothing to bad. recently I was messing around with burning a mandriva .iso, and suddenly my touch pad just stops working. every now and then it will work for a brief moment after I bring back from sleep mode. The computer says that there is a touch pad and that it is active. any tips?
