• Looking for "bitmap-vector" image editor

  I used to use PhotoImpact which is no longer developed so I'm looking for a replacement. What made PhotoImpact great to me was the ability to work in both bitmap and vector modes. What I mean by that: I could have an image or screenshot and easily add arrows, text captions or shapes to it. These shapes were vector objects so I could come back to them later and amend their properties easily. Software I know of: Paint.NET is purely bitmap so please don't recommend it - layers are not enough for my needs Drawing tools in MS Office work pretty much the way I'd like - you can paste an image and then add vector objects on top of it. It just doesn't feel right to have the full-fidelity original images stored as .docx or .pptx (I don't fully trust Word/Powerpoint that they don't compress the image) I'm not sure about GIMP but if it's just "better Paint.NET" (i.e., layers but no vector objects) I'm not interested Photoshop is out of question purely because of its price tag Corel killed PhotoImpact because they already had a competing product (Paint Shop Pro) but AFAIK it lacks vector features. Any tips for PhotoImpact alternatives would be very welcome.

• What's next for all of these Microsoft "overlapping" and "enhanced" products ?

  Recently I attended a road show, organised by MS Gold Partner company in the UK. The products discussed were: SharePoint server (2010 and 2007), Exchange server, Office Communication Server 2007, Exchange hosted services Office Live meeting, Office Communicator, System Center Configuration Manager and Operation Manager, VMware, Windows 7 etc. As Microsoft claims the enhancement in the each product against higher version, I felt that clients are not much interested in all these details. For example Office Communicator, surely they have improved a lot the product and first site all said 'WOW' great product, but nobody wish to pay money for all these extra features. Some argued, they are bogged down by all these increased number of menus. They don't need soft call feature included with mobile call. It apply for all other products as well such as MS office (next what 2 ribbons ?), windows OS and many more. Indeed there must be good features in all these products, but is it worth to spend money and time to update the older system ? Also sometimes these feature will decrease the productivity instead increase it. *So do you think what ever enhancement MS is doing in the products is only for selling purpose, not a real use ?? and I think also keep the developer busy learning the new tools and features. * I am sure some some people here will argue that some people need this sort of features. But I am not talking about NASA or MI5 guys. I am talking of usual businesses and joe public. Any ideas welcome.

• Is there an SSL equivelent to an ssh agent?

  Here is my situation: There are a number of developers who all need to have access to be able to install ruby gems and python eggs from a remote source. Currently, we have a server inside our firewall that hosts the gems and eggs. We now want the ability to be able to install things hosted on that server outside of our firewall. Since some of the gems and eggs that we host are proprietary I would like to somewhat lock access to that machine down, as unobtrusively as possible to the developers. My first thought was using something like ssh keys. So, I spent some time looking at SSL mutual authentication. I was able to get everything set up and working correctly, testing with curl, but the unfortunate thing was that I had to pass extra arguments to curl so it knows about the certificate, key and certificate authority. I was wondering if there is anything like the ssh agent that I can set up to provide that information automatically so that I can push the certificates and keys to the developer's machines so the developers don't have to log in or provide keys each time they try to install something. Another thing that I want to avoid is having to modify the 'gem' command and the 'pip' command to provide keys when they make the http connection. Any other suggestions that may solve this problem (not related to ssl mutual auth) are also welcome. EDIT: I've been continuing to research this and I came across stunnel. I think this may be what I'm looking for, any feedback regarding stunnel would also be great!

• Some process does ICMP port scan on my OSX box and I am afraid my Mac got a virus

• What do the readonly attributes in diskpart really mean?

  I am wondering exactly what the meaning is of the "Read-only" disk and volume attributes that you can twiddle in diskpart on Windows 7. I am trying to set up an external USB drive as an installation medium for my own software, so I'd like to protect it against casual or inadvertent changes by users who it is given to, so they don't screw up the installation files they might need in the future. From what I can tell by experimentation with diskpart, the volume read-only attribute is actually stored on the physical disk somewhere, because I can set it and it shows up when I take the drive to another machine. This is great because my users can't (easily) change any of the files on the volume, or format it from Windows explorer. However, the disk read-only attribute seems to be just an aspect of how the current machine is accessing the drive. When I set it I can no longer delete the volume in the disk via Disk Management, but when I take the drive to another machine, the attribute is no longer set and in Disk Management I can delete the volume on the disk. I guess I'm not that worried about my users doing that, but I am annoyed that I don't understand what these attributes are really doing. Another thing that I don't understand is that the "volume" read-only attribute actually seems to be global to the disk - if I have two volumes on the disk, and I set the readonly flag on one of them, then it gets set on the other one too. ?!? I have the feeling I'm not searching for the right docs - all I'm finding is diskpart docs that give the syntax for twiddling these attributes, not what they really mean. • Create "raw disk file" from WIM file

  First timer here. I've searched around here, but haven't found a question like the one I have. Apologies if I missed it. The challenge at hand: produce a "raw disk image file" from a given WIM file. What I am pursuing so far is to use imagex.exe with the "/apply" operation to take the WIM and lay it down in a directory on a server. That seems to produce all the necessary "stuff" I need in that directory. How would I take that content and produce a "raw disk image file"? I'm told the definition of "raw disk image file" is a block-by-block copy of the disk image, which I hope is the output of the "imagex.exe /apply" command I use currently, but stored in a single file I can hand back to another system in our solution. imagex.exe /apply image.wim 1 R:\WimImagePoint I would like to take the contents of R:\WimImagePoint and produce the elusive (to me) "raw disk image file". ISO is not what they want, nor is anything requiring winPE. Any pointers? External utilities' references are welcome. Would like to avoid unmanaged code solutions as much as possible, but will entertain them if that's the only route. Also, I am not married to the idea of imagex /apply as the starting point, it's just the comfort zone so far.

• What's the best way to run Drupal and Django sites behind the same Varnish server?

  I have a high traffic website running with Drupal and Apache, five web servers behind a Varnish server load balancing. Let's say this site is example.com. I'm using five backends and a director like this in my default.vcl: director balancer round-robin { { .backend = web1; } { .backend = web2; } { .backend = web3; } { .backend = web4; } { .backend = web5; } } Now I'm working on a new Django project that will be a new section of this site running on example.com/new-section. After checking the documentation I found I can do something like this: sub vcl_recv { if (req.url ~ "^/new-section/") { set req.backend = newbackend; } else { set req.backend = default; } } That is, using a different backend for a subdirectory /new-section under the same domain. My question is, how do I make something like this work with my director and load balancing setup? I'm probably going to run two or more web servers (backends) with my new Django project, each one with a mix of Gunicorn, Nginx, and a few Python packages, and would like to put all of those in their own Varnish director to load balance. Is it possible to do use the above approach to decide which director to use?, like this: sub vcl_recv { if (req.url ~ "^/new-section/") { set req.director = newdirector; } else { set req.director = balancer; } } All suggestions welcome. • Random Excel bug when referencing a different sheet

  I am getting a very strange error anytime I try to use a formula pointing to a cell in a different sheet from the active one (even as simple as "=Sheet2!A1"). This started happening all of a sudden, and without any change in the system - only I seem to having started having the problem since I started using a workbook from another colleague with the same issue. I'm running Excel 2003 SP3 on XP. With little variants, whenever I reference a cell in a different sheet, from any formula, and then press Enter, the formula gets written on a different cell from the one I was editing it in, and throws a REF error. Example: I start editing in cell A1 of Sheet 1, type "=", then move the cursor to cell B2 of Sheet 2 (that may contain any value), and press Enter. At this stage you would expect cell A1 in Sheet 1 to contain formula "=Sheet2!B2" and display the value in that cell. Instead what happens is that the cell remains empty, and another random cell of Sheet 1 gets populated with something like "=Sheet2!#REF!" throwing an error. Interestingly, the error does not happen when I manually type the cell reference in (ie. without moving the cursor to the second sheet). Hope this is making any sense - any ideas are welcome! • Windows 7 Not Recognizing Camera Nor iPhone as Camera

  I've been struggling with this one for a few days. I've recently upgraded an older computer to Windows 7 Home Premium. Neither my digital camera (A Canon SD1200IS) nor iPhone are ever detected as cameras, nor ever show up as accessable in Explorer. With the Canon camera, no driver is required. It's supposed to work with the default Windows 7 drivers. However, in the Control Panel's Device Manager, I'm always seeing a yellow icon next to the "Canon Digital Camera" device. I've uninstalled the device and let Windows attempt to reinstall, but it can never find a driver to install. With the iPhone, it's very similar. One big difference, though, is that iTunes can see the iPhone and back it up, etc. However, again when I go to the Device Manager, there's a yellow icon next to the iPhone. I've uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled, rebooted, deleted drivers, and let Window try to reinstall the driver, but it can never find the driver. So there seems to be some correlation that my machine can't detect cameras properly, and that it might be even a lower-level type of driver I'm struggling with. I know that USB however, does work, because I have have an external drive hooked into the machine. I've gone through the web and tried two hours worth of fixes, without success. I feel like if I can get the Canon camera detected, then the iPhone will be on it's way to being fixed too. BTW, I couldn't really find anything of use in the Event viewer. Any and all suggestions welcome.

  Recently I have installed Citrix Xen Server 6.2 on a machine. My Provider (Hetzner) gave me the IPv6 Subnet 2a01:4f8:200:xxxx::/64. Followed an article in the providers wiki (1) i got it working and can assign IPs to my guests (CentOS). However i can't assign a second IP to a single guest - it will result in a timeout. I'm not very familiar with IPv6 routing / subnetting - any help or tips for further troubleshooting is welcome! • How to detect/list rogue computers connected to a WIFI network without access to the Wifi Router interface?

  This is what I believe to be an interesting challenge :) A relative (that leaves a bit too far to go there in person) is complaining that their WIFI/Internet network performance has gone down abysmally lately. She'd like to know if some of the neighbors are using her wifi network to access the internet but she's not too technically savvy. I know that the best way to prevent issues would be to change the Router password, but it's a bit of a PITA having to re-configure all wifi devices... and if the uninvited guest broke the password once, they can do it again... Her wifi router/internet connection is provided by the telco, and remotely managed so she can log-on to their telco account's page and remotely change the router's Wifi password, but doesn't have access to the router status page/config/etc unless she opts out of the telco's remote support and mainteinance service... So, how could she check if there are guests in the wifi with this restrictions and in the most "point and click way"? In this case I'd probably use nmap to look for other devices in the network, but I'm not sure if that's the easiest way to do it. I'm not a wifi expert, so I don't know if there are any wifi-scanning utils that can tell us who's talking to the router... Lastly, she's a Windows user as I guess that'll influence the choice of tools available Any suggestions more than welcome Regards!

• Updating Samba From RPMs

  My Red Hat Enterprise Edition 4 comes with Samba Version 3.0.10, which does not have support for the "inherit owner" attribute that is essential in implementing a Deny-Delete Write Once Read Many share (for examples, search google for a-shared-drop-box-using-samba). (BTW, if any body knows an alternative way to do it without updating samba, I'm all ears!) I am not all that comfortable building from source, and after hours of googling (no, I do not have a red hat subscription, so I cannot just run the up2date command), I found a whole bunch of rpms on http://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/tested/rhel/4/i386/ (Samba 3.2.15 for RHEL 4)... Next, I tried updating them with the rpm -U --nodeps command, but I got file conflict errors. So I went ahead and overwrote everything (or so I thought) by using the rpm's --force option. But no good has come of all that. /usr/sbin/smbd -V still returns the old version. As of now, rpm -qa | grep samba returns, samba3-client-3.2.15-40.el4 samba-3.0.10-1.4E.2 samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E.2 system-config-samba-1.2.21-1 samba3-3.2.15-40.el4 samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E.2 samba3-winbind-3.2.15-40.el4 I cannot remove the older ones because samba-common >= 3.0.8-0.pre1.3 is needed by (installed) gnome-vfs2-smb-2.8.2-8.2.x86_64 libsmbclient.so.0()(64bit) is needed by (installed) kdebase-3.3.1-5.8.x86_64 libsmbclient.so.0()(64bit) is needed by (installed) gnome-vfs2-smb-2.8.2-8.2.x86_64 Now thats a whole bunch of dependencies that I dare not touch :) Any and all pointer are welcome at this stage. • Is my webserver being abused for banking fraud?

  Since a few weeks i'm getting a lot of 403 errors from apache in my log files that seem to be related to a bank frauding scheme. I suspect not, because it's giving 403 to all requests. But any extra checks that I can do to ensure that my server is not being abused are welcome. I'm also curious on how the "bad guys" expected my server to behave. I.e. are they just expecting my server to act as a proxy to hide the ip of the fake site, or are they expecting that my server will actually serve the fake banking website? Is the ip 1.2.3.4 more likely to be the ip of a victim or the ip of a bad guy. I suspect a bad guy, because it's quite unlikely that a real person would visit 4 bank sites in a second. If it's from a bad guy I'm very curious at what he is trying to do.

• Webserver max CPU when apache and MYSQL are ran together

  This website has been running fine without issues, Recently it went down. After some investigation it looks like the combo of MYSQL and Apache bring the box to its knees. Apache can run find serving static web pages and MYSQL can run fine when the website isn't working. As soon as the website is enabled with SQL running the CPU on the box remains at 100%. The server is a redhat based box running the latest software packages. Any help/suggestions are welcome. • Can I use a Drobo FS over the internet? -Or alternative?

  I have a lot of files. A HUGE Aperture library, lots of design work from Photoshop, and a rather large iTunes library too. I really want to get a Drobo FS, the networked one, to store all of my stuff on, so that I can get to it from my MacBook Air (which obviously with its minuscule 64GB drive can't hold my Aperture library by itself) and my iMac which is my main powerhouse. The dealbreaker for me is that I NEED to be able to access my Aperture library, and especially my iTunes library from across the internet. I understand that it will probably be slow and everything, but there's nothing else I can do besides hauling around a huge hard drive with me. So, is there any way I can somehow share my Drobo across the internet, on a VPN or something? My other alternative is to upload everything to my web host, FatCow, which offers unlimited disk space (something I hope to make them regret) and then access it using Expandrive. My only thoughts with this are that with the Drobo, any work that I do locally will be much snappier than if I have to work everything off the cloud. Any suggestions about alternatives would also be welcome.

• SVN Authentication with LDAP and Active Directory

  I am having a few problems getting SVN authentication to work with LDAP / Active Directory. My SVN installation works fine, but after enabling LDAP in my apache vhost, I just can't get my users to authenticate. I can use a selection of LDAP browsers to successfully connect to Active Directory, but just can't seem to get this to work. • How to use AND/OR Building Block content in a Word 2007 template

  I am creating a Schedule of Work template and am successfully using Developer Tab and Quick Parts to allow user to choose content on an "either/or" basis: either A; OR B; OR C; etc., essentially choose one option from many. One Building Block control, one paragraph, nice and clean. Now what I need to do but cannot seem to figure out, is how to allow user to choose content on an "and/or" basis: either A AND B; A OR B AND C; B AND D AND E OR F; etc., essentially choose several options from many on a variable basis. One Building Block control, maybe one paragraph, maybe three or more paragraphs. Not so clean. I thought of building choice options for all possible paragraph combinations, but I can have as many as 7 or 8 different paragraphs, and that solution quickly becomes unworkable. Multiple controls--some of which will be left unused doesn't work either, since I cannot find an easy way to have a "Choose or Delete" control that actually deletes if "Delete" is chosen. Recommendations are most welcome.

• IIS replication - Is it possible

  Hi All, I have a requirement for a client that I have a centralised system that all his satellite branches can work on. Currently this is a ASP.net web forms app running under IIS 7 on win 2008 RC 2 using an SQL backend. The client has now requested that each branch have a local server, so that in the event that the internet connection is down, the branches productivity does not suffer. His other request is that everything can be updated via the central hub and using some mechanism the updates filter down to the individual sites. What are my options here? I see the following as possible options: Multiple redundant internet connections controlled by load balancers SQL replication for the DB (What is better, snapshot, merge or transactional) Roll my own IIS sync service the periodically checks if there is a new version of the web app and downloads it (I hope there are better option than this) Something way better I don’t yet know about (I hope this is the one I need) One of my clients concerns are that the branches are often in very remote areas where everything from technicians to internet is hard to find and very scarce. Any ideas, suggestions, tips etc are welcome. Thanks all

• Five stars of open data - example and review

  (there may be a more suited SE site for this question so feel free to shift) I have some data I'd like to make open to the public - It's synatesis of some related data retrived from freedom of infomation requests over the last year. The data itself is at http://www.cs.rhul.ac.uk/home/joseph/domesday/Domesday-Scotland.csv or for fans of Excel, at http://www.cs.rhul.ac.uk/home/joseph/domesday/Domesday-Scotland.xlsx . It's no more than a table with about five columns. I'd like to make this properly open data, so I was looking at the 5 star deployment scheme for Open Data. Much of which is fine but I'm confused towards the end and I could do with an explenation from people who know the answers. So to get achieve the star levels I need: "make your stuff available on the Web (whatever format) under an open license" trival - all I have to do is put the notes up on the page that will give the provance of the data. "make it available as structured data (e.g., Excel instead of image scan of a table)"… done… "use non-proprietary formats (e.g., CSV instead of Excel)" - done… "use URIs to identify things, so that people can point at your stuff" - this is where I start to get a bit hazy - does this mean there should be an URI for every line in the table? "link your data to other data to provide context" - this isn't massively clear to me - does this mean to give the provence of the data? One column of the data I've put out is a link to where the data came from - is that the sort of thing we're looking at? Any and all information and answers welcome… EDIT - or if anyone wants to recommend a place SE or other place to ask the question - that would be cool...

• VMware NAS/iSCSI recommendations - smallish organization

  I have two VMware servers - ESX + ESXi. Two backup NAS boxes. The current NAS boxes are low-cost and unsuitable for running VMs from. Support NFS only. Slow. My plan is to have a dedicated iSCSI/NAS for storing and running VMs. Two additional low-cost boxes for backup. I'm looking for advice regarding 2 things really: Recommendations as far as VMware architecture/design for a smaller organization. Less than 20 Virtual Machines. 2 servers + 2 x 1.5 terabyte backup NAS boxes. A good NAS/iSCSI box with your recommendation on RAID config ...I would go with 6 or better. I'm trying to design an installation that is both fast and reliable/redundant. If you have any experiences to share or your current configuration including network design ( switches, fiber ...etc ), I will be enormously thankful. I'm not married to this idea, so if you have a design not using iSCSI NAS boxes ...let er rip. Cost? Can we stay around $5,000 ( on top of already stated components )? Links to info are welcome also. • My Windows 7 has suddenly stopped displaying Unicode symbols

  For some strange reason, my computer suddenly doesn't show certain unicode characters anymore! I have no idea what happened. Affected applications include Windows Explorer (should be Japanese characters), Google Chrome (should be a heart), and Winamp (should be stars): Russian, German etc. characters are displayed normally. Chrome also displays Japanese script on websites, but not in the GUI. How can I fix it? Update: I have tried to use System Restore to fix it. I needed to go back in time quite a while because the most recent restore points didn't solve it so I used one from the middle of November. After that restore, Unicode symbols were displayed again. Then I updated my system with Windows Update again because those were removed during the restore. After that, the error occurred again! I then did a restore to a point before my new updates, but the error persists, and the old restore point (which I used before) is gone and there are currently no other snapshots of the system. Any suggestions on what to do now? Update 2: I could find a workaround: Control Panel ? Region and Language ? Administration ? Change Language for Unicode-incompatible programs to Japanese (Japan). All mentioned programs display their symbols correctly again. However, I don't consider this a fix because these programs are not usually Unicode-incompatible, and it also leads to some (non-serious) artifacts in some programs. I still welcome an answer that tells me what went wrong here and how to fix the issue.

• Failure to obtain IP with ARP over Wi-Fi with personal Wi-Fi router in client mode

  I'm trying to connect a Samsung TV to the Internet using a TL-MR3020 personal wireless router in client mode. The TV fails to connect to the network. It sees the ethernet cable connected though. Here's my network topology: Here's what I've captured with Wireshark filtering for ARP (eth.type == 0x0806): It appears the TV fails to get the IP of the gateway (DSL modem/router) for some reason. One thing I've noticed is that the source MAC for the ARP requests coming from the TV is the MAC of the Portable wireless router (that is cd:89:00), not the TV itself and the modem sends the responses to that MAC (I'm not an expert and don't know if its okay or it may make the TV fail to get the requested IP). Also I'm able to ping the TV from the DSL router (through the telnet interface) and the router has an entry in its MAC table for the TV's IP with the Portable wireless router's MAC (that is cd:89:00). If I'm able to ping the TV I suppose it should know the router's MAC to respond to the ping, but then why these continuous ARP requests... I've also tried to connect my desktop trough this Portable wireless router the same way I'm trying to connect the TV and it works fine, I can set the DSL Modem's IP as the default gateway on the desktop's NIC and connect to the Internet. The TV can connect to the Internet when connected to the DSL Router with a wired connection. Any suggestions on what may be the cause of the problem / how to further debug it are welcome. Thanks!

• Unable to access newly created web site in IIS 7.5

  Configuration: 32-bit Windows 7 development machine with IIS 7.5 I created a new web site in IIS to host only MVC sites called MVCHOST. The physical path to this website is set as C:\inetpub\mvcroot. I created a new v4.0 pool called mvcpool for this purpose. I have given Modify rights to IIS_WPG, IIS_IUSRS, ASPNET accounts. I created this web site with a host header "mvchost" and port 80, in the hopes of browsing MVC sites in the following way: mvchost/mvcapp1 mvchost/mvcapp2 instead of localhost/mvcapp1 localhost/mvcapp2 The only binding I set is the default one: http:*:80:mvchost. I have also copied the files iisstart.htm, web.config, welcome.png and folder aspnet_client from wwwroot over to mvcroot. Now when I try to the browse this site from IIS manager, I get the following error: This webpage is not available If I leave out the host header and give some port, say 99, I can access this website at localhost:99. What am I missing here? Why am I unable to access the web site at: http://mvchost/?
