  • How can I deactivate the gnome desktop of my ubuntu server?

    - by 19 Lee
I'm running a home server on my old laptop (atom cpu). I installed ubuntu 12.04 server edition, but I also installed ubuntu-desktop. So, when I turn it on, ubuntu desktop is shown. I sometimes use GUI, but I want to turn the ubuntu-desktop (gnome-desktop) off when I don't use it. I think I can save resources by turning off the GUI. It's necessary since my laptop's performance is not very good and it often becomes very hot. I guess I can run ubuntu-desktop on my terminal with "startx" command. But, I don't know how to turn the X window off for a moment. Anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance.

  • Unable to show Desktop Notifications using Google Chrome

    - by Praveen Kumar
    I followed the instructions as given in Using The Notifications API. Also I faced many problems like the below, because I added the document.querySelector() inside the <head> part: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method 'addEventListener' of null Now I have the below source, where I am able to Check Notification Support, and Check Notification Permissions links. Guide me how to bring in notifications in a simpler way. Also, I tried this: $("#html").click(function() { if (window.webkitNotifications.checkPermission() == 0) { createNotificationInstance({ notificationType: 'html' }); } else { window.webkitNotifications.requestPermission(); } }); Now I am stuck with this source. I need to generate HTML & Simple Notifications. Am I missing something? Please guide me. Source: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html lang="en-US"> <head> <meta charset="UTF-8"> <title>Desktop Notifications</title> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> function checkNotifications() { if (window.webkitNotifications) alert("Notifications are supported!"); else alert("Notifications are not supported for this Browser/OS version yet."); } function createNotificationInstance(options) { if (window.webkitNotifications.checkPermission() == 0) { // 0 is PERMISSION_ALLOWED if (options.notificationType == 'simple') { return window.webkitNotifications.createNotification('icon.png', 'Notification Title', 'Notification content...'); } else if (options.notificationType == 'html') { return window.webkitNotifications.createHTMLNotification('http://localhost/'); } } else { window.webkitNotifications.requestPermission(); } } </script> <style type="text/css"> * {font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;} body {font-size: 10pt; margin: 0; padding: 0;} p {margin: 5px;} a {color: #09f; text-decoration: none;} a:hover {color: #f00;} </style> </head> <body> <p><strong>Desktop Notifications</strong></p> <p>Lets see how the notifications work in this browser.</p> <p> <a href="#" onclick="checkNotifications(); return false;">Check Notification Support</a>.   • C# / WPF / .NET - Drag and drop to Desktop / Explorer

    - by Dänu
Hey Guys Following my scenario. I got an Application which loads a Filestructure (Folders, Files) from a Database into a WPF ListView. Now I'd like to grab a file from this ListView, drag it over my Desktop (or some open explorer window) and drop it there. Basic Drag and Drop, nothing fancy. This sounds like a "standard" function for a windows application - but google won't help. So how can I achieve this? Interops? Thanks Edit: Thanks for the solution, I still had to do some googling. Here's my complete solution.

  • Toggle between "Extend these displays" and "Show desktop only on 1"

    - by Clayton Hughes
I'm looking for a way to programmatically alter the video properties in Windows 7. I'd like to toggle the Multiple display state (as seen in Control Panel Appearances and Personalization Display Screen Resolution) between "Extend these displays" and "Show desktop only on 1". This is the sort of thing that I think is probably doable just by knowing the right Windows executable/dll to invoke with the right parameters and bundling that into a script or shortcut, but if so that information eludes me. Actual code solutions are fine, of course, but I'd like the change to be permanent and not just disable the other monitor(s) for the duration of the application.

  • Webmail client that can open multiple email addresses at once like a desktop client

    - by Trent
I've got 5 email domains with multiple email addresses on each domain. Traditional webmail clients only seem to allow you to browse a single account at a time (ie, you log into that account). With over 20 email addresses I need to monitor, this is obviously a major time sink. Is there a (preferably OSS, unix-based) webmail client that simulates a desktop email client, ie I log in once and can access all the email addresses from a central control panel? I've considered using a ticket system but that is overkill and not really used to my needs.

  • DRM for videos bundled with a desktop app?

    - by onekidney
Hey everybody, So, I have this desktop app built using WPF and C#. It's basically an offline course system that has videos, quizzes, and other assorted content. My dilemma is that I don't know how to protect the videos once they are downloaded and installed on the users machine? Are there any DRM systems out there that I can look into? I thought about storing them in a local encrypted database but I don't even know where to start with that (or if there is something else out there that I'm totally missing...) Don't even know where to start looking on this one - any ideas?

  • Web Page Design Get Distorted in Desktop PC Monitor

    - by Tarik
I am building my web application on my laptop but when I navigate the page on my desktop pc the layout of the div are distorted. I think the solution is giving percentage instead of absolute numbers like 240px to height and width of divs. What do you think ? Do you have another recommendations ? Thanks in advance. What I've done is : <div style="height:240px;width:240px"></div> What I think I have to do is : <div style="height:100%;width:90%"></div>

  • Creating Windows Desktop Icon in CMake + CPack + NSIS

    - by Simeon Fitch
I'm using NSIS package generator in CMake 2.8.1 to distribute a Qt application. Everything is working fine... except the use of CPACK_CREATE_DESKTOP_LINKS to create a desktop link to the application. I've looked through the CMake source (including it's own "bootstrap" installation definition for windows), and as far as I can tell I'm doing the same thing. Here's the relevant section of my CMakeLists.txt file. set(CPACK_GENERATOR NSIS) set(CPACK_NSIS_PACKAGE_NAME "${EWS_APP_NAME}") set(CPACK_NSIS_DISPLAY_NAME "${EWS_APP_NAME}") set(CPACK_NSIS_CONTACT "${EWS_EMAIL}") set(CPACK_PACKAGE_EXECUTABLES "${EXE_TARGET_NAME}" "${EWS_APP_NAME}") set(CPACK_PACKAGE_INSTALL_REGISTRY_KEY "${CMAKE_PROJECT_NAME}-${EWS_VERSION}") # this works set(CPACK_NSIS_MENU_LINKS "${EWS_WEBSITE}" "Homepage for ${EWS_APP_NAME}") # this doesn't set(CPACK_CREATE_DESKTOP_LINKS "${EXE_TARGET_NAME}") # Icon in the add/remove control panel. Must be an .exe file set(CPACK_NSIS_INSTALLED_ICON_NAME bin\\\\${EXE_TARGET_NAME}.exe) set(CPACK_NSIS_URL_INFO_ABOUT "${EWS_WEBSITE}") set(CPACK_NSIS_HELP_LINK "${EWS_WEBSITE}") Any ideas or debugging tips are appreciated!

  • PHP Session when using desktop app

    - by Jonathan
In this question I asked how to POST to a php file form a vb.net app: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2615335/post-to-webpage-in-vb-net-win-forms-desktop-not-asp-net So now I've logged in the user user by posting their username and password to the php file, the php file then does security/checks they exist/etc and if both username and password are correct is stores the user ID in a session variable. Now if the vb.net app tries to download data off a page which needs the user to logged in, it checks this by doing: if (!isset($_SESSION['uid'])) { header("Location: index.php"); } However after having logged correctly in the app the session variable is not set. How does session work with a vb.net app like this? When the user logs in successfully should I download the user id and keep it in the vb.net app and then post it to each page that requires authentication?

  • Getting started with writing a desktop app that talks to an iPhone

    - by Anna Lear
I'm thinking of writing an app to selectively transfer photos/music to and from my iPhone, mostly for fun and personal convenience. However, I'm stuck at the very beginning -- where do I look to find information on how to do this? Pretty much every link I see talks about developing applications that run on the iPhone, but nothing about desktop app for interfacing with an iPhone. I'm on Windows (no access to a Mac, but I'll take suggestions for that for when I eventually acquire one), and I'm most familiar with C#, but other languages are definitely an option. Can anybody offer me a few pointers on getting started? Thanks.

I searched SO for an answer and found one question, but its in java and i think that code would run on blackberry itself and not on desktop, correct me if i am wrong. So if someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance to all those who reply.

  • need a web browser in my desktop application

    - by javadahut
part of the specification of this desktop application is to have a mini browser built in, so that you can enter URL, and navigate the site as you would on a normal browser. Access to the browser page's DOM is required, should let me programmatically change the rendering view of a page, should be cross-platform, renders javascript JDIC seems outdated and I've heard Mozswing doesn't run on Mac.... Jxbrowser license costs a grand and up. Is Java the wrong platform to be creating such app? Are there any other solutions out there for building an application like this ? Thank you.

  • Using mozilla plataform to develop desktop applications

    - by RHaguiuda
Hi everyone. From what It seems mozilla plataform was designed to be used focused in web development (browsers, e-mail clients, instant message...). I want to use Mozilla plataform to develop desktop applications that need most access to computer serial port and some applications that have nothing to do with web. Im considering mozilla because its multi-plataform and easy to extend using themes and extensions. Is it possible to program a serial terminal for example using mozilla? Does mozilla have any class ou framework that do this job or I`ll have to code for windows API? Thank you!

  • Constraining window position to desktop working area

    - by simplecoder
I want to allow a user to drag my Win32 window around only inside the working area of the desktop. In other words, they shouldn't be able to have any part of the window extend outside the monitor(s) nor should the window overlap the taskbar. I'd like to do it in a way that does cause any stuttering. Handling WM_MOVE messages and calling MoveWindow() to reposition the window if it goes off works, but I don't like the flickering effect that's caused by MoveWindow(). I also tried handling WM_MOVING which prevents the need to call MoveWindow() by altering the destination rectangle before the move actually happens. This resolves the flickering problem, but another issue I run into is that the cursor some times gets aways from the window when a drag occurs allowing the user to drag the window around while the cursor is not even inside the window. How do I constrain my window without running into these issues?

  • Desktop mono app and MVC/MVP framework

    - by tempy
I am looking for a MVC/MVP (mvp prefferably) framework for my first mono app. There doesn't seem to be too much out there, but I have found the following: http://www.mvcsharp.org/ http://desktoprails.osl.ull.es/doku.php I've been looking into both for some time, and MVC# seems to be closer to what I want. The issue is that MVC# seems to be a .net project and not designed specifically for mono (as opposed to desktop rails), so I'm not 100% sure how it will play with mono. Also, it is under the Microsoft Public License (MsPL), and I am not sure how well that license will play with other components I intend to use that are gpl/mit/apache/etc. So if anyone has any experience with either of these frameworks in mono and can answer any of these questions, I would appreciate any feedback.

  • Communicating from website to desktop application (not vice-versa)

    - by chakrit
I am designing an application such that it will have to react to certain actions required by the website, mostly the same way Last.FM client does (if you have used one) The way Last.FM client works is that, it will register a custom protocol in Windows (lastfm://) and on their website, they use that protocol to trigger certain action on the player, e.g.: lastfm://artist//similarartists will actually direct any Last.FM client running to load up similar artists. I would like to do the same thing for my application. Is this a good idea? Is there any good alternatives to send a message from a website to a desktop client in this manner?

  • Picture position in a desktop background slideshow

    - by user334017
I'm using windows 7 and I have a slideshow for my desktop background. I have pictures that are all of varying sizes, some are smaller then my screen's resolution, some are the same, and some are much larger. To look good, smaller wallpapers need to have their picture position set to 'center' (where the picture is centered on the screen and the background color fills up the edges). And the larger backgrounds need to be set to 'fit' (where the picture is scaled down so the entire image is shown on the screen). I can't seem to figure out a way to have the picture position intelligently change in my background slideshow so that the wallpapers always look good. Any insight?

  • How to transfer large files from desktop to server ( .NET)

    - by rahulchandran
I am writing a .NET 2.0 based desktop client that will send large files ( well largish under 2GB) to a server. Need to develop the server as well. Server can be on any technology It should be secure so an underlying SSL stream is needed What are my options. Any obvious caveats etc I should be aware of To my mind the simplest solution is to open a tcp\ip connection over SSL to the server and send n packets each of size M bytes and then have the server append the chunks to the file and finally send an EOF packet as well IS this horrible. Will the perf suck on the server with all these disk writes What are any other clever options. I am limited to .NET 2.0 on the client if I did move to a WCF client will it buy be something magical and cool for this scenario Thanks

  • .NET desktop App remembering login to a webservice

    - by pete the pagan-gerbil
I am in the planning stages of a .NET desktop app that will communicate with a web service. The web service requires a username and password, and a common feature in this sort of app is to save the user's credentials for the next logon. I've thought of a few ways of achieving this, but I am not sure what the most secure way would be. Should it be stored encrypted in a file (and could someone nefarious copy that file to their own machine and hence logon as the original person), or in the registry somehow (I've not done any registry work before, is it secure and would it work)? Are there any other options I might not have thought of?

  • Wrong shortcut icons on the desktop and in the programs menu

    - by Zenya
When creating a program setup, I also put some documentation or readme files in it. However after the program is installed, I get wrong icons on the desktop and in the programs menu, as below: What I expected: I thought that for the registered file types (such as pdf, txt, doc, etc.) I don't need to set icons manually in the setup project. Am i wrong? As far as I know some other installers doesn't have such problem. Does anybody know how to fix this for Visual Studio? My environment is: Visual Studio 2005, C#, Windows XP Pro SP3

  • Display streaming video in desktop app.

    - by Roddy
I have a Windows native desktop app (C++/Delphi), and I'm successfully using Directshow to display live video in it from a 'local' video capture device. The next thing I want to do is display video from a 'remote' capture device, streamed over the LAN. To stream the video, I guess I can use something like Expression Encoder or VLC, but I'm not sure what's the easiest way to receive/decode the streamed video. Inserting an ActiveX VLC or Flash player might be one option (although the licensing may be an issue then), but I was wondering if there's any way to achieve this with Directshow... Application needs to run on XP, and the video decoding should ideally be royalty free. Suggestions, please!

  • online backup solution with api for desktop

    - by user161179
I made a small backup application that simply creates an archive out specified files and folders. Now I need an online service to backup that online. Which service can i use that can be integrated into my app ? Options I considered: dropbox is ideal, but they have all but abandoned the desktop. skydrive has no api. I couldn't find any free reliable backup service that uses ftp . anything else ? it should provide 1-2 gb of free space and be reasonably reliable. Thanks My app is in C#, but can be ported to any other language as well..
