  • New instruction sets in CPU

    Every new generation of CPU introduces some sets of new instruction, ie.: MMX,3DNOW,SSE and so on. I've got few general questions about them: 1) If some program uses for example SSE instruction can it be run on CPU that doesn't support SSE? 2) If yes , does it mean that those instuction will be changed to some greater number of simpler instuctions? 3) If not, does it mean that the real perfomance impact of such new instructions will be after few years when most CPU will support such technology (so there won't be any incompatibilities)? 4) When I compile a C++ program with optimizations does it mean that it'll use some of this new instructions? (I know that it depends on many factors, especcialy on the code, but I want some general answer) Or are they reserved mostly for programs written in asm?

  • php - track down premature headers leak

    I'm using set_cookie() on a site. After adding some functionality, I'm getting Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by... error. The line number it references as to where the headers initiated from is the very line where set_cookie() is! And I checked, it's not being called twice. How can I track down these premature headers? I looked at the source code and didn't see any stray characters or anything before the error message starts ( I'm using xdebug, so the first thing is a , which I thought was me, but is actually the beginning of the xdebug message ). I've grepped my code for extra echo and so forth -- nothing. Can PHP tell me when and where the headers are starting? Or are they really starting on the set_cookie line, and if so, how have I gotten myself into this situation, and how do I get out?

    We are given a list of animals in different zoos and need to find which zoos have animals that are not in any others. The animals of each zoo are separated by spaces, and each zoo is originally separated by a comma. I am currently enumerating over all of the zoos to split each animal and create lists within lists for different zoos as such: for i, zoo in enumerate(zoos): zoos[i] = zoo.split() However, I then do not know how to tell and count how many of the zoos have unique animals. I figure it is something else with enumerate and possibly sets, but cannot get it down exactly. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Hi there, I'd like to initialise a dictionary of sets (in Python 2.6) using dict.fromkeys, but the resulting structure behaves strangely. Of course, I can avoid the problem by initialising x without fromkeys, but I'd like to understand what I'm missing here.

Basically until there are "open" elements (still to be exhaustively visited) the neighbours of every open element are taken into consideration and added to a SortedSetthat keeps them ordered by their cost and heuristic cost. This should work but simply it doesn't, if I iterate over the TreeSet during the algorithm execution like in for (PathTileInfo t : openSet) System.out.print("("+t.x+","+t.y+","+(t.cost+t.hCost)+") "); I get results in which the right ordering is not kept, eg: (7,7,6) (7,6,7) (6,8,6) (6,6,7) (5,8,7) (5,7,7) (6,7,6) (6,6,7) (6,5,7) (5,7,7) (5,5,8) (4,7,7) (4,6,8) (4,5,8) is there something subtle I am missing?     Do graphic cards have instruction sets of their own? I assume they do, but I have been wondering if it is proprietary or if there is some sort of open standard. Is every GPU instruction preceded by a CPU instruction or is it seamless? That is does OpenGL or DirectX call on the driver layer via the CPU which then sends a GPU instruction down the bus or is it more elaborate.

Now as I want to integrate Facebook XMPP chat , I want my server to sit in between client and chat.facebook.com because I want to implement Facebook chat and custom chat too. So I have read this article and come to know that I need to serve BOSH Service as a proxy in apache to access Facebook Chat service. Since I'm also not allowed to post a comment under his comment nor am I allwoed to ask on meta about how to contact another user, I ask this as a normal question here: How do I render my own DirectX Stuff to a full screen WPF's DirectX surface? For starters, I have no idea how to get the DirectX surface from a WPF window. If I had it, what do I have to take care of that the WPF rendering doesn't screw up my own rending or vice-versa?

  • Best practice, or generally best way to set up web-hosting server, permissions, etc. [closed]

    Hi, I'm about to set up a server upon which a friend and I will be hosting web sites, and I'll be using Debian. I've set up a LAMP solution many times just to using for local testing purposes, but never for actual production use. I was wondering what are the best practices are in terms of setting the server up, in reference specifically to accessing the web root directory. A couple of the options I have seen: Set up a single user account on the server for us both to use and use a virtual host to point to the somewhere in the home directory, e.g. /home/webdev/www. Set each of us up a user account, and grant permissions in some way to /var/www (What would be the best way? Set up a new group?) I want to get this right when I first set this up as there won't be any going back for a while once our first site is up and running. Appreciate any guidance in advance.

  • How to see the full file name on the Lubuntu Desktop?

    If I have a file with several characters in it, only a certain number of initial characters is displayed on the Lubuntu desktop and Xfce desktops. For example, I have a file titled, "interesting-links-on-default-browsers". It shows as "interesting-links-on-def..." with both DEs. However, single-clicking on the file in Xfce shows the full title but the truncated title remains in Lubuntu. It's not a big deal, but if it's just a matter of setting something somewhere to get the full title visible on single-click, I'd be grateful for pointers.

  • Single Full Name field in registration form user submits only first what to enter in my backend as last?

    On a registration form I have a single input called Full Name. The strings are parsed with http://code.google.com/p/php-name-parser/ so if a person enters their full name middle or any quantity of strings it's handled just fine and the app creates the user in a billing system with it's API. The form validates and checks for two strings in the field otherwise it won't post. I'd like to remove this validation but a last name is required by the API. You cannot post an empty last name to the API. Users are signing up for a trial so I don't want them having to deal with many form fields. The only place the last name shows up visible to the user is in their account settings page. If they end their trial and start a paid plan they'd have to enter their billing details which asks with two fields for their First, Last, and other billing information. What is an alternative to submitting "Doe", "Default", "Empty" in place of them not filling in their last name?

  • Youtube controls (sound, etc) not functional in full-screen mode: is that normal?

    When playing youtube videos full-screen, I can't mouse-interact with the player controls, except for the slider (only single-clicking on the video works as play/pause, but not double-click, interestingly, so the only way to leave full-screen mode is via Escape). Is this behavior known? What can I do about it? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04, using Google's Chrome browser. P.S. If that matters, some other flash players I've tried also display the same problem, so this may be an issue with Google-supplied Flash plugin. Thanks in advance.

  • What is the "don't force full gpu scalling" configuration in the newest Nvida driver settings?

    I have a Zotac Ion board on a computer running Linux ad I had the driver version 295.xx. I was trying to run a 1080 video on XBMC and, because playback was a bit sluggish, part of my (unsuccessful) attempt at making it run smoothly was to upgrade the Nvidia driver. The problem is that the computer is connected by HDMI to a Pioneer A/V system - which in turn is connected to the TV (also through HDMI). When I created this set up I didn't get any image on my tv until I Unchecked "force full gpu scaling" in "Flat Panel Scaling". After upgrading the Nvidia driver I no longer have image. Upon investigating, I saw on the release changelog: Removed Flat Panel Scaling configurability in nvidia-settings. Any desired scaling can be configured through the new "ViewPortIn" and "ViewPortOut" MetaMode attributes. I know very little about this, however, so I'm lost. What would the correct configuration be with these new ViewPortIn/Out options to achieve the same result as "unchecking force full gpu scalling"?
