• Custom vs. browser-native scrollbars

  Including customizable, JavaScript-based scrollbars (and scrolling functionality in general, i.e. bind the control to the mouse scroll wheel) in your webapp can be a great temptation. However all solutions I could find were developed by individuals (which can equal lack of formal or future support). In addition I fail to remember any mainstream site using them. In my particular case, no-JavaScript or IE6/odd-browser environments are not intended to be supported. Should custom scrollbars be avoided nowadays? If not, what's the best option one can choose?

  I'm using cPanel to host my website. I need to enable 'mod_rewrite' on this Shared Hosting cPanel account to run my script. I've tried to Google the solutions high and low but did not find any luck yet. Those tutorials that I found only work well with VPS and some of them said that, only hosting provider can change and enable it. But, some of them said that, it can be done easily by editing the .htaccess file. My question: If I want to edit the .htaccess file, what should I include in that file? What the 'rules' and 'conditions' that should be included?

• Is it possible to boot without mounting /home?

  I want to backup my /home partition on /dev/sda6 using partclone, a command line utility. To do so, I first have to unmount the partition that I want to backup. Most of the time, this is easy, but /home is used by so many processes that it can't be unmounted without first killing all those processes. So, the thing I'm looking for is a way to boot Ubuntu, without mounting /home, so I can back up the not-mounted /dev/sda6 partition. Is that possible? To be clear, it would be nice if this special boot could be 'one-time-only'. So I'm not looking for ways to change /etc/fstab in such way that /dev/sda6 won't be mounted. That's because that would require me to change /etc/fstab twice each time just to make a backup. I'm aware of the fact that there are other backup solutions available, such as deja-dup. I'd like to use partclone, though.

  Java Day Taipei 2014 was held at the Taipei International Convention Center on August 1st. Organized by Oracle University, it is one of the largest Java developer events in Taiwan. This was another successful year for Java Day Taipei with a fully sold out venue. In addition to Oracle speakers like me, Steve Chin and Naveen Asrani, the event also featured a bevy of local speakers including Taipei Java community leaders. • Are there any Phone Interview equivalents to FizzBuzz?

  I think FizzBuzz is a fine question to ask in an in-person interview with a whiteboard or pen and paper handy to determine whether or not a particular candidate is of bare-minimum competence. However, it does not work as well on phone interviews because any typing you hear could just as easily be the candidate's Googling for the answer (not to mention the fact that reading code over the phone is less than savory). Are there any phone-interview questions that are equivalent to FizzBuzz in the sense that an incompetent programmer will not be able to answer it correctly and a programmer of at least minimal competence will? Given a choice, in my particular case I am curious about .NET-centric solutions, but since I was not able to find a duplicate to this question based on a cursory search, I would not mind at all if this question became the canonical source for platform-agnostic phone fizzbuzz questions.

• Framework for interaction between web-page and server-side script

  I want to make a web-page that will have several controls elements, among which there are elements like check-boxes, radio-buttons, "range selectors" (one can specify the min and max value, like it is done when you select range for prices in the online markets). The new values shall be sent to the "server-side", once changed (without any Submit buttons etc), and the "server-side" can return something (one or more numbers, etc). Does anyone know a good ajax-like framework that allows (with minimal adaptation / changes) to make such solution in an easy way? It will be good if the server-side of existing solution will be in Perl (not a big deal, but I know it much better than PHP or something else). Set of controls might change and depend on other parameter, so adding one extra element should not cause rewriting the whole thing. P.S.: I haven't working in this area for quite a while, so not aware of existing solutions in this area, and don't want to invent the wheel and write everything from scratch for something that already exist (at least, I hope so). If you occasionally edit files as root (I never do, I always use pfexec, wink wink), then you may have noticed that the vim (Vi Improved) editor that normally does filename completion via the <Tab> key now gives you something like: :e /etc/mo^I when you try to open up /etc/motd with a little less typing So, there are at least three solutions to this: Use <Ctrl>-E instead of <Tab> Use the "-N" flag when you start Vim :set wildchar=<Tab> (Enter those 5 characters, not an actual Tab) The reason for this? It seems that when you are root, Vim sets it's "compatible" flag, which makes it behave more like its ancestor vi. In turn this makes Vim set 'wildchar' to <Ctrl>-E. But the source controls like Clearcase has large support for enterprise customers. Companies investing huge amount for source control servers and licesense. Of late most of the large companies like Google adopting Git over the other version controls. But the company is having strong open source group which consistently provide development and support for the tool (Even they might be having a custom version of Git of their own). At the same time, large companies are not really bothered about adopting open source projects and make it relevant for them. Is Git really a reliable tool for enterprise environment, especially for Windows Platform? The support is a question for Git as it's an open source version control. Any companies are there to provide solutions and support? How the server costs comparing to other version controls like Clear-case?

• Adding multiplayer to an HTML5 game

  I am interested in making a game that I currently have a co-op experience, however I'm curious as to the best method of implementing this in HTML5. I have made games before using straight C sockets, and also with the Net library for SDL. What are some of my best options for doing this in a canvas-based environment? At present, all I can come up with are either AJAX/database solutions (with a high refresh rate), or somehow implementing a PHP server that would funnel the data through sockets. The overall gameplay would be a 2.5D platformer-ish type of game, so both clients would need to be continually updated with player positions, enemy positions, projectiles, environmental data, etc.

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using Unity interface. Unity is working quite nice so far but i really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets show useful quickinfo. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get these infos onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found at one place.

I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

• Hosted News Carousel

  I'm trying to add a news carousel on my OneHub site. I know there are quite a few plugins that I can use, but I'm looking for a ready-to-use hosted solution where people can log-on and manage the content, and I can simply include as an iFrame widget on our OneHub site. We would prefer to use Expression Engine, since we're using this on some of our other websites. It looks like Expression Engine + JQuery Cycle Rotator might be an option, not sure how easily I can get this onto OneHub though... WordPress has a carousel plugin as well that I'll explore. Anyhow, while I'm trying out these options, I figured I would put a question out there for any thoughts or advice, other solutions, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Alan

  Its been 2 years since graduating from uni and working in a IT solutions company as a programmer. My initial year was particularly exciting when we were trying to get a fresh product up to speed. The product has now gone live and are in the maintenance phase. My current day job involves merely bug fixing and also small designing/implementing change requests and also helping resolve issues faced from clients. Slowly I feel a little 'normal' in my role. I wonder how I can make myself stand out. (I work in a company of no more than 200 people) Or what should be the next step I take after 2 years doing programming? Thanks!

• Problem after last update

  I am having a problem after the last update, the booting to command line problem I even can't start in the graphic fail system "xfail": X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (no such file or directory), aborting I found some one mentioning a solution which is installing ubuntu-dektop though apt-get but it failed due to this error: Unmet dependencies " the dependencies are xserver-xorg-video-all and xserver-xorg-input" Tried to install these first also another dependencies problem. Solutions I tried: removing and installing nvidia driver removing and installing xserver Tried different versions of nvidia including the latest one which is the one I had before the update Any ideas?

  Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

  I have an large html website on a very old server and I'm attempting to move it to a brand new server running IIS7. I've tried moving the entire site to the WWW directory, but then all my forms return "The HTTP verb POST used to access path is not allowed". Additionally, all the solutions I've found online only work on a page by page basis. Is there a simpler/faster way to migrate a large website containing many forms to IIS7? Here is the specific error message: The HTTP verb POST used to access path '/FormServer/Mig/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/admissions/askseaaggie.htm' is not allowed.
