• Probelm with ATI catalyst drivers in ubuntu 13.10

  Recently I've installed dual boot ubuntu 13.10 alongside windows 8. My Laptop is Dell Inspiron 15, with AMD Radeon HD 7670 Video Card. Without fglrx my battery is draining to 1:30 hrs from 3:30hrs (In Ubuntu 13.04 but very slow booting ) so I installed fglrx using What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx)? But the problem is as you all know, Black Screen after logging into ubuntu. Tried so many solutions for this like reinstalling unity , ubuntu-desktop , compizconfig , etc.. but none helped except removing fglrx* completely. (But I need them very badly due to battery) Assuming that all hope is lost., Posting here as a final try.! Will be highly greatfull for those who helped :) PS : For those who think this question is a duplicate., Though the question may be a duplicate, but the answer is not! (so give me a assured solution for this problem before flagging this as duplicate., Kindly understand my frustation) Thank You !

• Free Typescript editor with definition based code completion feature

  I know that a plugin for Visual Studio exists. However i can't afford VS so i'm looking for a free alternative which can be used to code TypeScript and aware of the .d.ts definition files and can do code completion based on them. I know that Sublime Text and VIM can do syntax highlighting with the correct language definition file. However the biggest advantage of Typescript for me is that ability to give code assistance while coding. Are you aware of any editor which can do this? I'm interested even if it's in an experimental state.

  Whats the best way to get started on iPhone development if you are an expeienced C++ or C# programmer? Most books either assume you know nothing or something. What are the steps to achieve this? For eg: first learn objective C (let's say), next learn cocoa... I am interested in books/resources. I read Getting started with iPhone development from Oreilly (the missing manuals book) but that just provided an over view on the programming and concentrated more on getting your app into the app store. I need need resources that will help be start coding. Other questions: How much of objective C do you need to know? How do go ahead with learning the cocoa framework? Can I directly start on cocoa touch or do I need to know the MAC cocoa framework first? Inputs from someone who was in the same situation (Know c++/c# but no clue about mac programming/objective c/cocoa) would help greatly.

• How to host a simple website using a domain name I own

  I'm familiar with hosting webapps when I'm doing "the whole shebang" of installing / configuring / setting up Apache/Tomcat/PostreSQL / "coding" the website myself using HTML / JSP / CSS etc. on dedicated servers I'm renting. But in the above case, I'm "owning" the entire stack: from the Debian GNU/Linux dedicated servers to every single file that is served. Now I'd like to do something much simpler and I must admit I don't know what's involved at all. I'd like to host a simple website made of only a few static pages (no database, no nothing) and I'd like it to be accessible from "example.com". What needs to be technically done to have such a thing? How is the DNS supposed to be set up? Note that I do not want to host this on one of my dedicated servers.

  I have been coding PHP for about 2 years now and I THINK that I have a very good grasps of the fundamental parts of PHP, i.e. Functions foreach/IF statements sessions/cookies POST/GET Amongst a few others. I want to move on to learning OOP PHP now, so learning how to use classes and making it a really valuable skill. I have 1 requirement, the source must be a respected source that doesn't teach developers bad habits. I have the book: PHP and MySQL Web Development However, as useful as that is I would like an online source. I would like to know from people with experience in OOP PHP, how and where did they learn OOP PHP. Obviously by doing, but I would really appreciate some great resources which help me along the way.

• Configuring A Subdomain (cPanel) - www works, subdomain on it's own doesn't

  I've created a sub domain on my website using cPanel at test.mydomain.com, and this created a folder in my main 'www' directory called test. In this folder is a folder called cgi-bin, and it seems to redirect the page to say "It works!", but when I upload my own index.html file to the test directory it keeps showing http://test.mydomain.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi instead of the index file. If I go to www.test.mydomain.com then it works OK. How do I host my content at the sub domain? It's my first time setting one up so I'm a bit lost.

• 2D basic map system

  i'm currently coding a 2D game in Java, and I would like to have some clues on how-to build this system : the screen is moving on a grander map, for instance, the screen represent 800*600 units on a 100K*100K map. When you command your unit to go to another position, the screen move on this map AND when you move your mouse on a side or another of the screen, you move the screen on the map. Not sure that i'm clear, but we can retrieve this system in most RTS games (warcraft/starcraft for example). I'm currently using Slick 2D. Any idea ? Thanks.

  Do you know where I can find a good example of software design diagrams and specs on the internet? Like UML, specs and similar. I'd like to understand this approach better. Before I just started coding and now I'd like plan more in advance. By diagrams I don't mean made-up examples, but something that would actually be used. Also it shouldn't be so trivial that there is no use of using diagrams. Ideally it shouldn't be too large either. Do you know a good online source?   I love Rich Hickey, Clojure and Haskell and I get it when he talks about functions and the unreliability of side-effecting code. However I work in an environment where nearly all the functions I write have to read from the database, write to the database, make HTTP requests, decrement a user's balance, modify a frontend HTML component based on a click action, return different results based on the URI or the POST body. We also use PHP for the frontend, which is littered with functions like parse_str(), which modifies an object in place. All of these are side-effecting to one degree or another. Given these constraints and the side-effecting nature of the logic I'm coding, what can I do to make my code more reliable and function-able?

• Can not get to login screen, background starts with terminal prompt only

  my uncle has Ubuntu on his work PC. Basically I came in to work today, and he had lost his UNITY side bar. I told him start with just rebooting it. He rebooted it... now it does not even get to the login screen. It gets to the background with the word UBUNTU, and the 6 or 7 dots, does it's little loading dot thing... then stops, and a black terminal opens on the top left with the background still in place. Personally, I think he screwed it up himself. He always swears he didn't touch anything, but I know better... Either way, I can't get him back into the desktop to even see if the sidebar is back. He's always screwing around pressing the wrong buttons on the login screen, hitting admin things and such... Any ideas?

  Hi, Some background first- I am new to programming and have discovered it rather late in life; Like many hobbyists, my introduction to the subject has been through php/jquery (yes, i know the popular mood around here... they-are-not-real-programminng-languages ;-) ). I like to believe that I am reasonably competent at what I do in my other life and this developing addiction to coding has taken a very heavy toll on my professional prospects. This is the question: What programming languages next? (No plans to ditch php in the immediate future, that will involve rewriting much of my code) Any absolutely essential books I must read? Is it necessary to join a college/university course? Do I need to ditch my other profession to continue serious learning? • Naming conventions used for variables and functions in C

  While coding a large project in C I came upon a problem. If I keep on writing more code then there will be a time when it will be difficult for me to organize the code. I mean that the naming for functions and variables for different parts of the program may seem to be mixed up. So I was thinking whether there are useful naming conventions that I can use for C variables and functions? Most languages suggest a naming convention. But for C the only thing I have read so far is the names should be descriptive for code readability. EDIT: Examples of some examples of suggested naming conventions: Python's PEP 8 Java Tutorial I read some more naming conventions for java somewhere but couldn't remember where.

• Finding Telecommuting Opportunities as a Recent College Graduate

  Reading the answers to hiring practices of remote vs. local employees and freelance programming sites, I would like to add this question to the mix. I am a recent college graduate from an electrical engineering background with 2 years worth of work terms in programming (C, C++, VBA, Matlab, etc.) while I was still in school. While I am interested in learning other software tools (such as Python, Ruby on Rails, Javascript, etc.), I want to use the tools I have now in a telecommuting role while I grow my toolset. Despite having 2 years of work experience (and I've lost track of when I have started programming), my status as a recent college graduate may be an obstacle of my credibility to compete for telecommuting (or in fact any) programming opportunities. I don't know how I can go about finding telecommute programming opportunities for someone with my situation. Overall, many of previous places I've worked at liked my work. What are your suggestions?   Hello, I've started doing some research on the technologies that I will need for my website. I'm trying to implement a really simple website with OpenID user registration. The website will store a block of text for each user. I imagine this means that I will need a database with: User ID Open ID url Data Having said that, I'm still having trouble deciding what I really need to do this. I know that I will need the following for the actual site: Javascript JQuery CSS But on the back end, I'm kind of lost at the moment. I've been looking at the OpenID-Selector, which is coded in Javascript. It seems like it's exactly what is used on this site. Will I actually need PHP? MySQL for the data and user registration? I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. • How do I make the jump from Android to Windows Phone 7?

  I'm planning on making the jump over from developing apps for Android to developing apps for Windows Phone 7 as well. For starters, I figured I would port over my simplest app. The code itself isn't much of a problem. The transition from Java to C# isn't that bad. It's actually easier than I expected. What is troublesome is switching SDKs. I've already compiled some basic Windows Phone 7 apps and ran through some tutorials but I'm still feeling a bit lost. For example, I'm not sure what the equivalent of a ScrollView on Android would be on Windows Phone 7. So does anyone have any advice or any resources they can offer me to help me make this transition? Additionally, any comments on the Windows Phone 7 app market (especially in comparison to the Android market) would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you very much in advance for your time.

• C: What is a good source to teach standard/basic code conventions to someone newly learning the language ?

  I'm tutoring someone who can be described as a rank newcomer in C. Understandably, she does not know much about coding conventions generally practiced, and hence all her programs tend to use single letter vars, mismatched spacing/indentation and the like, making it very difficult to read/debug her endeavors. My question is, is there a link/set of guidelines and examples which she can use for adopting basic code conventions ? It should not be too arcane as to scare her off, yet inclusive enough to have the basics covered (so that no one woulc wince looking at the code). Any suggestions ?

• Basic AI FSM - Handling state transition

  I'm starting to study on how to implement game AI, and it seems to me that a very simple FSM for my Pong demo would be a nice way to start. My vision on implementing this would be to have a basic state interface and a class for each state, then the NPC would have an instance of the current state. The class should have an update method and directions on wich state to go next, depending on the event received. The question is: How do I handle this event? Should I have a regular addEventListener and a costum event system? Or should I check on update for the things that could change the current state? I'm feeling a bit lost, I feel I have a good grasp on the FSM concept but a good implementation seems tricky, thanks in advance.

• Why should I adopt MVC?

  I decided to get my hands wet and got the YII framework for PHP. I created my first application, then created new controller, model and view. Connected to database, got my record passed from controller to the view and printed the hello world. I am confused now. If I have to do the same thing for each page, this seems like a nightmare to me. In each controller I have to do a lot of same operations - declare variables, and pass them to views. I also need to create models for each page and this is all confusing to me. In my idea the main goal of development is to avoid duplication, but what I see here is lots and lots of duplicated code. Please advise and clarify. Maybe you could suggest a good reading about MVC and coding patterns and best practices in MVC. Because so far, it takes much more time to create a small site using MVC than using my own programming schema.

• Falied installing ATI X.Org binary driver!! (ATI Radeon HD 5400)

  The open source driver worked well with the fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.04, but it drains my laptop battery faster. So I installed the proprietary driver from jockey-gtk. It gave me this error message at the end of the installation: Here is the jockey.log After restarting the computer, I lost all the compositing animations. Compiz visual effects don't work. There is a black boarder around Docky. Please somebody help me...! Thanks!

• several subdomains pointing to one folder. fasthosts problem

  I have a asp.net website (e.g. www.website.com). The idea is that you will go to the url 'yourname.website.com' and my site will request the name from the sub domain, process it and change the content accordingly. So, I purchased my fasthosts hosting package and created a sub domain which points to a folder within my site. e.g. 'www.website.com/folder'. However, when i now go to the url 'yourname.website.com' it is immediately redirected to 'website.com/folder'. this means I cannot request the subdomain from the url because it has been lost. I have tried contacting these guys but they don't understand and keep going on about some sort of redirect script (although i don't see how any further redirects can solve my problem). Is there something I am missing here? Any suggests or help would be much appreciated!

• How can I change the wallpaper using a Python script?

  I want to change my wallpaper in Ubuntu 11.10 (with Unity) in a small Python script. I found the possibility to change it via the gconf-editor in /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename. With python-gconf, I'm able to change the necessary values. Apparently, the gconf string is not read out. If I change it (either via a script or via gconf-editor), the wallpaper remains and in the menu of "Change wallpaper", the old wallpaper is shown. How am I able to change the wallpaper for Unity via a Python script? The following code does work.
