• Redirect Output of Capistrano

  I have a Capistrano deploy file (Capfile) that is rather large, contains a few namespaces and generally has a lot of information already in it. My ultimate goal is, using the Tinder gem, paste the output of the entire deployment into Campfire. I have Tinder setup properly already. I looked into using the Capistrano capture method, but that only works for the first host. Additionally that would be a lot of work to go through and add something like: output << capture 'foocommand' Specifically, I am looking to capture the output of any deployment from that file into a variable (in addition to putting it to STDOUT so I can see it), then pass that output in the variable into a function called notify_campfire. Since the notify_campfire function is getting called at the end of a task (every task regardless of the namespace), it should have the task name available to it and the output (which is stored in that output variable). Any thoughts on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

With H=4 : 1) ALL solutions for x_1 + x_2 + x_3 + x_4 =4 2) ALL solutions for x_1 + x_2 + x_3 = 4 3) ALL solutions for x_1 + x_2 = 4 4) ALL solutions for x_1 =4 For my problem, there are always 4 equations to solve (independently from the others). There are a total of 2^(H-1) solutions.   I'm trying to use the bar_geom function of ggplot2, but I can't understand how to use it. I realize that I don't understand how ggplot2 functions as this small example does not work, yet my other example is generating a plot but I cannot specify a y-range as it considers the variables to be categorical.

• hadoop beginners question

  I've read some documentation about hadoop and seen the impressive results. I get the bigger picture but am finding it hard whether it would fit our setup. Question isnt programming related but I'm eager to get opinion of people who currently work with hadoop and how it would fit our setup: We use Oracle for backend Java (Struts2/Servlets/iBatis) for frontend Nightly we get data which needs to be summarized. this runs as a batch process (takes 5 hours) We are looking for a way to cut those 5 hours to a shorter time. Where would hadoop fit into this picture? Can we still continue to use Oracle even after hadoop?

• Getting website data into Adobe InDesign

  I'd like our magazine team to be able to download website data in a file that Adobe InDesign can read. They can then import/open the file, make a few tweaks, and cut out a vast deal of repetitive manual labour (they currently use copy&paste for a few hours). After a brief Google I note that v2 of InDesign can import/export XML so perhaps that is my best bet? Are there any alternatives, and can anyone offer any advice on them? I am using a PC, and the magazine team are on Macs; testing will be tiresome I fear. The data we wish to format is fairly simple - a title followed by a short chunk of text (repeated about 50 times, say). I'll ask about importing images later. Thanks for your help. I will return to Google now, but it would be great if anyone can point me in a more specific direction first!

• Sharepoint SSRS: Unexpected Error Encountered

  We are running an intranet website hosted on Sharepoint 2007, serving reports to users via SSRS. Recently, our users are experiencing error when trying to access certain reports with the error message "An unexpected error has occurred". After trying many things, to cut a long story short we manage to temporarily solve the problem by manually running UPDATE STATISTICS on the tables in the database. However, this error will periodically crop up again and again, running UPDATE STATISTICS immediately solved it. I had suggested to run a daily job in the server to auto run UPDATE STATISTICS every few hours or so but was rejected by my team lead. Is there any other workaround for this error? Why does UPDATE STATISTICS solve the problem, I still not very understand?

  Hi folks, I'm learning PHP. Having trouble understanding why this piece of code isn't working. In particular: why is the result of array_sum($x) (1596) greater than $cap? In webkit browsers(i tested both chrome and safari) the overflow hidden cuts the text outside the border. Firefox just renders text outside the border. I also tried this without overflow:hidden; but again the text just rendered outside the border.

• Manually inserting varbinary data into SQL Server

  Hi, We have a SQL Server table for user settings. Originally the settings were domain objects which had been serialized as XML into the table but we recently begun serializing them as binary. However, as part of our deployment process we statically pre-populate the table with predefined settings for our users. Originally, this was as simple as copying the XML from a customized database and pasting it into an INSERT statement that was ran after the database was built. However, since we've moved to storing the settings as binary data we can't get this to work. How can we extract binary data from a varbinary column in SQL Server and paste it into a static INSERT script? We only want to use SQL for this, we don't want to use any utilities. • Is there an equivalence to CDOSYS AutoGenerateTextBody in .NET

  I'm porting some VBScript code which generates emails using the standard CDOSYS Message object. The Message oject has a property AutoGenerateTextBody which when true will cause it to automatically create the TextBody property value when you assign HTML to the HTMLBody property. Hence creating the typical text/plain and text/html alternatives in the message body. However .NET appears to be missing this function. The MailMessage object does have the ability to create alternative views but there doesn't appear to be a way to easily create the text body content from the HTML content. I'm not necessarily looking for an auto-magic option but I do need a solution to taking what is an HTML string and converting it to a reasonable plain text representation. Just dropping all the HTML markup doesn't cut it. Is there a tool buried somewhere in the existing .NET framework that can do this?

• Where to find iPhone system buttons and icons graphics?

  Hey guys, I'm trying to find a way to use the original Apple system buttons and icons in a web site. Is there a way to get these original graphics in png format? There are not-so-nice ways to obtain them of course. Two I was thinking of: Save them from this link, then convert to png. Take screen captures on the iPhone itself, and cut the icons from the saved images. Is anyone aware of a nicer way to obtain the original graphics? Does anyone know where they are stored on the Mac? • How to prevent multiple browser windows from sharing the same session in asp.net.

  I have ASP.net application that is basically a data entry screen for a physical inspection process. The users want to be able to have multiple browser windows open and enter data from multiple inspections concurrently. At first I was using cookie based sessions, and obviously this blew up. I switched to using cookie-less sessions, which stores the session in the URL and in testing this seemed to resolve the problem. Each browser window/tab had a different session ID, and data entered in one did not clobber data entered in the other. However my users are more efficient at breaking things than I expected and it seems that they're still managing to get the same session between browsers sometimes. I think that they're copying/pasting the address from one tab to the other in order to open the application, but I haven't been able to verify this yet (they're at another location so I can't easily ask them). Other than telling them don't copy and paste, or convince them to only enter one at a time, how can I prevent this situation from occurring?

• javascript textbox call event when value changes

  I have a textbox, and whenever the value of the box changes, I want to check and see if 20 digits have been entered. I thought that I would use the onChange event, but this seems to be interpreted as the onBlur event on IE. So then I thought I would use onKeyDown, but the problem comes in if the user wants to paste a value into the field, then the function never gets called. There are no other form boxes so I can't rely on onBlur or expect that they will change focus ever. How do I do this? I just want to evaluate the value of the textbox everytime the value of the textbox changes. <input type="text" onKeyDown="myfunction()">

• jQuery: split and hide html data

  Hi guys! I need to split somehow some html data (a text with html tags) into two parts and hide the second one with a show/hide link. The thing is all texts are being stored in the database with html tags. Some of those texts are short, but some are really long. We don't want't to show long ones, so one of the options is to show a teaser with a show/hide link. I can't just cut the string though (let's say first 300 characters), because it'll break html code of the page. I'm looking for a solution/suggestions how to show a teaser of the text using jQuery without breaking the html code of the page. Thank you.

• Question about migrating from ASP .NET User Controls to .NET 3.5 Master Page technology

  When migrating from an ASP .NET user control -based page with a header, footer, and menu to a Master Page using the same HTML mark-up, is it normal for CSS or javascript behaviors to change slightly? In particular, the submenu bar text now appears run together (which looks like a CSS symptom) and the graphics on the line above it appear to have an incorrect z-order. (The menu operation is javascript-based.) (I tried to paste images here but couldn't.) Also, the site is very large and we've not been given permission to redo the menu for the entire site. This is a forward-only migration. (Because I know that someone will ask.) Assuming that there are no changes in scope, what are the things that I should check? Thanks! Jim

  I've got a business app in C#, with unit tests. Can I increase the reliability and cut down on my testing time and expense by using NModel or Spec Explorer? Alternately, if I were to rewrite it in F# (or even Haskell), what kinds (if any) of reliability increase might I see? Code Contracts? ASML? I realize this is subjective, and possibly argumentative, so please back up your answers with data, if possible. :) Or maybe an worked example, such as Eric Evans Cargo Shipping System? If we consider Unit tests to be pecific and strong theorems, checked quasi-statically on particular “interesting instances” and Types to be general but weak theorems (usually checked statically), and contracts to be general and strong theorems, checked dynamically for particular instances that occur during regular program operation (from B. Pierce's Types Considered Harmful, where do these other tools fit? We could pose the analogous question for Java, using Java PathFinder, Scala, etc.

• Looking for an alternative to cfdump

  I think I just realized how restrictive my web host is when they wouldn't let me use cfdump. This actually kind of angers me, cause really, what harm is dump going to do? Anyway my question is has anyone written a cfdump alternative that will kick out complex types of data or can link me to a site with a code example? Can't really used cfc's or udfs either cause guess what, they're blocked too. Anyway looking for something simple that I can just paste in my cfml and I will be happy. It's sad that I used to be able to do this, but have forgotten a lot of that skillset since I moved into Flex and AS. oh and they're using cf7, so no cf8 or 9 tricks ;-) Thanks in advance.

• Using code in both Actionscript3 and Javascript

  Here's an interesting architectural query. I have a piece of code that needs to run on the server (under Node.js) and on the client (in a Flash 10 app written with Actionscript 3). The code is mostly fairly intricate object manipulation, it doesn't make any API calls, and works fine in both contexts. So far the project is just a demo, so I've been happy to copy and paste the code into both places. But it might be quite interesting to move forward with this. So how would you do it? I assume there is no easy way to get the Flash SDK (has to build without an IDE) to read and do something useful with a .js file. My only thought is that I could write a code-generator that takes the .js file and places it in an ActionScript wrapper. Are there any obvious approaches that I've missed? Just to pre-empt an obvious answer, I know about cross-platform languages like HaXe.

  I've got some older MFC code I wrote that I'm "freshening up" a bit. I have the following code in a window class' OnChar() handler. I really don't like using constants like 0x18. I'd like to make the code more readable. I know I can declare my own, but are there no Windows macros for these values? • How can I efficiently group a large list of URLs by their host name in Perl?

  I have text file that contains over one million URLs. I have to process this file in order to assign URLs to groups, based on host address: { 'http://www.ex1.com' = ['http://www.ex1.com/...', 'http://www.ex1.com/...', ...], 'http://www.ex2.com' = ['http://www.ex2.com/...', 'http://www.ex2.com/...', ...] } My current basic solution takes about 600 MB of RAM to do this (size of file is about 300 MB). Could you provide some more efficient ways? My current solution simply reads line by line, extracts host address by regex and puts the url into a hash. • How to use TDD in a not very "Testy" environment

  I work in a company where OOP is... well, not fobidden, but at least frowned upon as "too complex". My coworkers write lots of 100+ lines functions and they are usually all in a "funcs.inc.php" or "something.inc.php", if they use any functions at all, often they don't since copy-paste is faster. I would love to start using TDD at least for the code i write but as i have to interface with their code i can't see how to begin. It's not legacy code as they are actively developing it and i don't want to modify their code as i don't want to provoke conflicts. Which approach would you suggest, except for changing the company?
