• Why is IE7 hiding my overflow when, as far as I can tell, all it's containing elements have overflow

  If you visit the site in question (haddongrant.com) and go to the Artwork section, if you click on an image and view it's stack in Safari, Chrome or Firefox you'll notice the images extend up and down the page, eventually disappearing over the edge. This is what you should be seeing. In Internet Explorer 7, however, the overflow gets cut off at some point before it ever gets to the end of the page. The problem is... I can't tell where! I've had a look and every containing element should show overflow. I don't know why IE7 isn't. Does anyone have any ideas where I might need to add an overflow-y:visible;?

• Does anyone know a better alternative to MS Excel's Solver?

  My company has to crunch a lot of data and part of the process involves running the solver and plotting a graph through resulting data points. Obviously there is a lot of copy and paste involved and the whole process is shaky, error prone and all round cluster-fudge. I was wondering if there was an alternative to the solver that can be used so that even if we have to use excel to plot the final graph, there will be a lot less data that needs to be copied and pasted back and forth. It would be great especially if the tool could be easily integrated into a .NET application but I am open to suggestions that may require a little bit of code-fu to get this to work. Thanks!

• Python KMeans clustering words

  Dear Everyone I am interested to perform kmeans clustering on a list of words with the distance measure being Leveshtein. 1) I know there are a lot of frameworks out there, including scipy and orange that has a kmeans implementation. However they all require some sort of vector as the data which doesn't really fit me. 2) I need a good clustering implementation. I looked at python-clustering and realize that it doesn't a) return the sum of all the distance to each centroid, and b) it doesn't have any sort of iteration limit or cut off which ensures the quality of the clustering. python-clustering and the clustering algorithm on daniweb doesn't really work for me. Can someone find me a good lib? Google hasn't been my friend

• JQUERY nav problem

  This is part 2 of a different problem that I was having... Hopefully this is about as simple as you can get, but I'm clearly missing something..... The gist is, I'm trying to get a mouseover effect using jquery/css with a mix of background images and colors. It's mostly there, but the issue that I'm having at the moment is, I mouseover the main nav = fine, I mouseover the subnav = fine, I mouse BACK over to that same main nav element, and it's OFF state kicks in instead of remaining ON as it's supposed to... • Get #part in URL with PHP/Symfony

  Hi, I'm working with Symfony 1.2. I've a view with a list of objects. I can order them, filter them by category, or moving to the next page (there is pagination). Everything is done with AJAX, so I don't have to load all the page again. What I want to achieve is to have http://urltopage#page=1&order=title&cats=1,2 for example; so the new page is saved in the browser history, and he can paste it to another web. I haven't found a way to get the #part. I know that's only for the browser but I can't believe I can't get through PHP. I'm sure there is a simple solution I'm missing... thanks a lot!

• masking a UIImage

  I'm working on an app that can change the borders or a rectangular UIImage. The borders will vary, but will look like the UIImage was cut out with scissors, or something to that affect. What is the best way to do this? My first thought is to prep a bunch of transparent PNGs with the correct border effect I'm looking for, and then somehow use that as a mask for my UIImage. Is this the right path? Or is there a more flexible programmatic way to do this?

  Hello everyone: I am trying to implement OpenID as one preferred option to my next web app here The code is taken from this tutorial and works if I use my openID from myopenid.com However, I believe most people would just love to use their everyday email address as their openID, as far as I know, Google, Yahoo, and some other big players have already done this in their systems. My question is: how could I find the correct "url" to enter in the form to login? I used my Google OpenID account for StackOverflow and it works just fine. I try to copy my openID like this: www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=aitoawllano10bzdzp3ht0diffry0qt6_j2ls-m And paste it directly into my form, but it doesn't work. I also tried to remove the url parameter, but that won't do, either. Thanks a lot in advance for any tips and suggestions.

• Custom jQuery dropdown

  I am creating a custom simple dropdown using jQuery that hides/shows a element based on over state. The problem I have now is that when you go over the shown element it hides, you cant move your mouse in to the dropdown that was created. Any thoughts on how to fix that also, is there an easier way to do what I have? • Disabling single line copy in Visual Studio

  Is there anyway to disable the rather annoying feature that Visual Studio (2008 in my case) has of copying the line (with text on it) the cursor is on when CTRL-C is pressed and no selection is made? I know of the option to disable copying blank lines. But this is driving me crazy as well. ETA: I'm not looking to customize the keyboard shortcut. ETA-II: I am NOT looking for "Tools-Options-Text Editor-All Languages-Apply cut or copy to blank lines...".

  I am writing a script for renaming/copying the content of a file. I have temp & temp1 folders. Inside temp1 I have 1000 .txt files with names 1.txt, 2.txt, 3.txt ... & in temp folder I have sub directories named 1, 2, 3. In the folders 1, 2, 3 ..., I have one file with extension java or xml. My need is to automate the copy of the contents of the .txt file, and paste into the respective file in the temp sub directory. Is it possible to do this using Perl?

• PHP Image Link in FUnction 404's

  Hello, I have a valid link that goes to a picture located on my web server. It is a simple jpg image, I can copy and paste this link into my web browser and it loads fine. The issue comes in when I try to call a few php functions on the image... such as getimagesize or fopen... they both return 404 errors even though the image is there. Does anyone know that could be causing this? Thank you for your time.

• Custom tool error: Command.proto:11:18: "Message2" is not defined.

  I am using the latest version of protobuf-net with VS2008 integration. I have created 2 messages (Message1 and Message2), 1 message in 1 proto file. When I try to reference Message2 in Message1 the code generator tool gives me error "Message2" is not defined and won't generate the code file. The package for both messages is same. It look like that because of the integration of the tool with VS2008 it expects all the messages in same .proto file to compile. Currently I have to paste an empty message with same name in Message1.proto file, like this: message Message1 { optional Message2 message2 = 1; } message Message2 { } And then later on remove the declaration of class Message2 from Message1.cs. Are there any settings that I need to do so to avoid this error, or is providing an empty declaration the only way?

  I'm working with animation in JavaScript, and I have a bunch of functions you can call to add things to the animation queue. Basically, all of these functions look like this: function foo(arg1, arg2) { _eventQueue.push(function() { // actual logic } } I'm wondering now if it would be possible to cut down on this boilerplate a little bit, though, so I don't need that extra "_eventQueue" line in the function body dozens of times. Would it be possible, for example, to make a helper function which takes an arbitrary function as an argument and returns a new function which is augmented to be automatically added to the event queue? The only problem is that I need to find a way to maintain access to the function's original arguments in this process, which is... complicated.

  Could somebody explain to me the architecture behind chatroulette? I was thinking about a similar project that would only implement Audio support (for starters). Is the best way to set this up a flash server? If so, how should I go about getting into flash, will I need flex 4? I have some beginner experience with c++, c# and java but I have never developed anything for the web. I was also wondering how the randomizer matches up the participants. How would you code something like this. Im obviously pretty clueless here and I'd greatly appreciate some advice regarding this problem -- I don't expect copy and paste solutions. • Is a successor for TeX/LaTeX in sight?

  TeX/LaTeX is great, I use it in many ways. Some of it's advantages are: it uses text files, this way the input-files can be diffed and many tools exist to work with text it is very flexible it has a stable layout: if I change something at the start of the document, it doesn't affect other things at the end of the document it has many extensions to reach different goals (a successor would start without extensions, but would have a good extension-system) you can use standard build control tools to support complicated documents (thanks dmckee) you can encapsulate solutions and copy&paste them to new documents or send them to others to learn from (thanks dmckee) But on the other hand some little things are not so good: it is hard to learn at the beginning it is complicated to control position of images a few things are a little counter-intuitive sometimes you have to type too much (begin{itemize} ... \end{itemize}) So, does there exist a successor/alternative to LaTeX or at least is some hot candidate for an alternative in development. A real successor/good alternative would keep the advantages and fix the disadvantages, or at least some of them.

• How can I prevent users from taking screenshots of my application window?

  What are some methods to prevent screenshots from being taken, if any? I've considered setting the "Print Screen" button as a hotkey, which makes the window fuzzy. However, there would be the problem of other 3rd party screenshot tools. How can I prevent their use? Why would I want such a thing? The idea is to create a chat client which you can't share the chatted information with others, not by copy & paste nor by print screen...   I know that MongoDB can scale vertically. What about if I running out of disk? I am currently using EC2 with EBS. As you know, I have to assign EBS for a fixed size. What if the mongodb growth bigger than the EBS size? Do I have to create a larger EBS and Copy & Paste the files? Or shall we start more MongoDB instance and each connect to different EBS disk?   Hello, I have <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/LinearLayoutPlayer" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <Spinner android:id="@+id/Spinner01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="100"></Spinner> <ToggleButton android:text="@+id/ToggleButton01" android:id="@+id/ToggleButton01" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1"></ToggleButton> </LinearLayout> Which displays a spinner and next to it a toggle button. Everything okay so far. Of course the spinner need some entries, so I add to the spinner the attribute: android:entries="@array/myentries" The problem now is that the toggle button is a bit lower than the spinner and the botton of the toggle button is cut off, maybe 3 or 5 lines of pixels. Anyone an idea what is wrong here? Android is version 2.2 Thanks!

  I work for an IT department with about 50+ developers. It used to be about 100+ developers but was cut because of the recession. When our department was bigger there was an ambitious effort made to set up a special architecture group. One thing this group decided to do was create our own internal logger. They thought it was such a simple task that we could spend recources and do it ourselves. Now we are having issues with performance and difficulty viewing the logs generated and some employees are frustrated that we are spending recources on infrastructure stuff like this instead of focusing on serving our business and using stuff that already exists like log4net or Enterprise Logger. Can you assist me in listing up reasons why you should not create your own .net logger. Also reasons for why you should are welcome to get a fair point of view :)

• LINQ expression precedence with Skip(), Take() and OrderBy()

  I'm using LINQ to Entities and display paged results. But I'm having issues with the combination of Skip(), Take() and OrderBy() calls. Everything works fine, except that OrderBy() is assigned too late. It's executed after result set has been cut down by Skip() and Take(). So each page of results has items in order. But ordering is done on a page handful of data instead of ordering of the whole set and then limiting those records with Skip() and Take(). How do I set precedence with these statements? My example (simplified) var query = ctx.EntitySet.Where(/* filter */).OrderBy(/* expression */); int total = query.Count(); var result = query.Skip(n).Take(x).ToList();

  In a recent meeting, I mentioned that I've seen a few websites with horizontal sliding panels and thought the UI was elegant, uncluttered and accessible. Naturally, I was asked to provide examples of those sites, but can't seem to dig up any of them now. Actually, I've been looking on an off for the past few days. (blush) Sooo....
