• A good language for c# dev to expand his mind [closed]

  I have some free time on my hands and I was thinking about learning a new language. I do not plan to use it in my day-to-day job, but I rather want to expand my way of thinking to get a better sense where the dev world is heading from a language perspective and to don't get stuck in my way when programming by rather try new approaches. I was thinking either a functional language, like Haskell or F# (which is a bit more 'pragmatic from a .NET dev standpoint) or something dynamic (like Python, that in my oppinion has nicer syntax than Ruby). What can you recommend that is enjoyable, at least a bit practical, but most of all, new (from a c# dev perspective). I appreciate any answers.

• Reputable web host in mainland China? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? We currently have a rather poorly set up Windows 2003 box with little to no support based in Shanghai; with no control panel/mail server. I am told for legal/business reasons the host must be based in the same location as the company for the website; but this could well be misinformation. Are there any well-known, quality hosts in China that offer reliable English-speaking support? We did consider GoDaddy on the west coast of America, but were informed of the risk of the site being shut down without any notice. We don't have any technically-minded contacts out there to advise, and hoping that someone will have some more experience in this department. Thank you.

• HW resources for the device driver [closed]

  Need to provide memory and IRQ resources to the Linux kernel in order to bring up the CAN controller. Have no idea how to get them. Below is the structure I need to fill in. This structure I have taken for example, this is for the Run-Time Clock, but I need for CAN controller. Both are on the same board, and there are constants for RT Clock (and all other devices), but not for my CAN chip. • I've totally missed the point of distributed vcs [closed]

  I thought the major benefit of it was that each developers code gets stored within each others repository. My impression was that each developer has their working directory, their own repository, and then a copy of the other developers repository. Removing the need for central server, as you have as many backups as you have developers/repositories Turns out this is nto the case, and your code is only backed up (somewhere other than locally) when you push, the same as a commit in subversions. I am bit disappointed ... hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when it handles merges better and there are less conflicts ?

• Web hosting company basically forces me to use their domain name [closed]

  I've recently stumbled upon an unusual problem with one of hosting companies called giga-international.com. Anyway, I've ordered com.hr domain from Croatian domain name registration company, and my client insisted on using this host provider as couple of his friends already are hosted with them. I thought something was fishy when the first result on Google for Giga International was this little forum rant instead of their webpage. When I was checking their services they listed many features etc... space available, bandwidth etc. I just wanted to check how much ram do I get for my PHP scripts so I emailed them, and they told me that was company secret. Seriously? Anyway, since my client still insisted on hosting with them I've bought their Webspace package. During registration I had to choose free domain name because I couldn't advance registration without it. Nowhere was said, not even in general terms and conditions that I wouldn't be able to change that domain name. At least not for double the price of domain name per year. They said I can either move my domain name over to them (and pay them domain registration), or pay them 1 Euro per month for managing a DNS entry. On any previous hosting solution I was able to manage my domain names just by pointing my domain to their name servers, and this is something completely new and absurd for me. They also said that usual approach is not possible because of security and hardware limitations. I'd like to know what you guys think about this case, and should I report, and where should I report this case. In short. They forced me to register free domain name which doesn't suit my needs in order to register for their webspace package, and refuse to change domain name for my account until I either transfer domain to them or pay them DNS management which costs double the price of the domain name per year.

• A correct way for JAVA age calculation? [closed]

  I have already a Java calculation of age method. I have a Person Class where I have the method and I need to ask the current time each time the method is called. All I could do is make age a static field of person class, so all person classes use the same time now. Im worring about the Calendar.get() creating Calendar objects every time method is called.   I have a PHP Form with two different fieldsets and about 4 labels within each. The form mailer is one i found on a tutorial but I'm not sure how to set in all the variables. Should all the 'label for' names also be the name of the variable? And is it easy to format with font-size etc.. once its been sent to an email for easy reading? $course_title = $_POST['course_title']; $course_date = $_POST['course_date']; $course_code = $_POST['course_code']; $course_fee = $_POST['course_fee']; Say i have - Personal Details labels with - first_name, address, postcode, dob.   Possible Duplicate: Why don't TITLE tags get indexed in google? Hello there, I have a h1 element on my page which is working great. I have also been using the title attribute on this element which I don't think has been causing much harm at all. My h1 title is "The Great Ocean Road" and the title attribute on that is "Great Ocean Road" - so it's a variation of the h1 text. These are both keywords for the site so i'm hoping it's a good thing for seo. Is that a bad idea do you think? I'm not sure what Search Engines think about using a title attribute or even if they would 'mark me down' for doing it in such a way. Do you think if the h1 text is "The Great Ocean Road", the title attribute should be "The Great Ocean Road" aswell? Thank you in advance

• Limiting my heavy thinking to my job [closed]

  This might be a weird problem which is only to a half relevant to actual programming, but hopefully there are people here that knows what I'm talking about. Basicly I'm proud of how I can deal with coding problems and fix them in short notice and many other aspects like building new systems and such. I'm fast on finding solutions and I often think about the impact my changes does to existing systems and so on, therefor preventing problem from arising at all and such. I am simply happy with how my mind operates when it comes to programming and I wouldn't want to change it at all. The problem, however is when I'm not programming. I find myself rather limited in social situations. I can't determine if it is through programming, but I sometimes think way to much about the consequences when it comes to being social. I know from own experience that most times you earn by not thinking about consequences, but it's hard for me not to. Often my friends tells me "I think too much" and even though I agree, I can't seem to change this behavior. My brain wants to think, and it likes to overthink simple stuff. Does anyone recognize the bad habit of not leaving advanced thinking at work, and in what way do you deal with it? If this isn't a suitable place to ask this question, I apologize and hope you may point me to the right site.

• How to identify web development benchmarking questions? [closed]

  I am in my final year of college and I have to put forward some sort of thesis for my final year project. The project is a web based attendance system that I am building for the college. I have it about 70% complete in Java. After completing it in Java, the plan is for me to rewrite the server bit in Erlang and then release the bitter rivals in a head to head cage match. The idea being that there is some sort of grounds for comparison. There are a few hurdles along the way, such as me learning Erlang. I understand that a performance comparison like this isn't strictly scientific as there are many factors such as the programmer (myself); the hardware it runs on; etc... but it is meant to be a reasonable comparison of the merits of using Java vs. Erlang for web development. I need help in identifying what the relevant questions are that my project could address. Even though the project scope is fixed, I am trying to shoehorn in some worthwhile scientific inquiries.

  I need your help. I'm trying to install php_apc.dll into my php directory. So far this is what i've done: I copied php_apc.dll to c:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext. I've also restarted the server several times. But when i checked http://localhost/?phpinfo=1 There wasnt any evidence of APC Extension Installation. Please what i'm i doing wrong?   If embedding Pygame to C++ to have a game be an executable, is there any extra process I would have to use in order to use Pygame functions when embedding into C++? As opposed to just writing embedding code in C++ for normal Python code? To clear cut the question I want to know if it's the same process without having to call different functions. EDIT: My question is if I have to call different functions in C++ when embedding Python code that uses Pygame modules. I am NOT using pygame2exe nor py2exe. I never even mentioned those.   In designing software, I spend a lot of time deciding how the knowledge (algorithms / business logic) and data should be allocated between different entities; that is, which object should know what. I am asking for advice about books, articles, presentations, classes, or other resources that would help me learn how to do it better. I code primarily in Python, but my question is not really language-specific; even if some of the insights I learn don't work in Python, that's fine. I'll give a couple examples to clarify what I mean. Example 1 I want to perform some computation. As a user, I will need to provide parameters to do the computation. I can have all those parameters sent to the "main" object, which then uses them to create other objects as needed. Or I can create one "main" object, as well as several additional objects; the additional objects would then be sent to the "main" object as parameters. What factors should I consider to make this choice? Example 2 Let's say I have a few objects of type A that can perform a certain computation. The main computation often involves using an object of type B that performs some interim computation. I can either "teach" A instances what exact parameters to pass to B instances (i.e., make B "dumb"); or I can "teach" B instances to figure out what needs to be done when looking at an A instance (i.e., make B "smart"). What should I think about when I'm making this choice?

  I know that there is a lot healthy discussion about this topic. but my case is entirely different from these discussions. I have just passed out my graduation. During the graduation period, i had done C#.net and java as well. Now i am working as Android programmer in a company. In the recent times, i have heard a lot about pros and cons of these platforms. What our seniors used to suggest that, ASP.net is a lot better than JSP for website developement. .net provides us lot of in built tools and API's for building powerfull applications. Java's platform independancy has always been issue among them. Security fetures are more in java. .Net has more powerfull IDE's. Now i am a bit confused on which platform to choose from these. I found java better from two, so did i prefer to choose android. Also, the discussion always ends with an issue that java has no scope for job as far has .net does. I would like to hear suggestions on this topic, but it would be better, if you consider indian IT market for this discussion.

• Non-dynamic CMS [closed]

  Some of the web sites I visit every day (news, sports, etc..), although the content changes very often (several times per day), the URLs always have .html extension, what makes me thing that the content has been generated once, and then published as a static page, rather than generated in every call, or even cached in memory. For example, the fictitious site "mysports.com" have a "futbol.html" page, and then yesterday Messi gets injured and they have another thing to put in that page, then I presume they post the new item in their CMS system, and automatically a publishing action is triggered aftewards that recreates "futbol.html" in a CDN with the new item and probably discard the oldest one. Then the ETag changes and clients will get the new page if they try to access it. (the site is fictitious but this is what I believe happened yesterday in the sports site I read) This would fit in the CQRS approach, and I presume they have a huge performance. I know lots of CMS (WP, Drupal, BlogEngine.net, DNN, etc...), but I have never seen any able of doing this, or at least, I was not aware this feautre. How are called those distributed CMS? Which are the most well known? Cheers.

• Why job postings always looking for "rockstars?" [closed]

  I have noticed a recent trend in requesting programmers who are rockstars. I get it, they're looking for someone who is really good at what they do. But why (pray) make the reference to a rockstar? Do these companies really want these traits as a real rockstar? Party all night and wake up to take care of quick business in the morning? Substance abuse, Narcissism with celebrity, Compensation well exceeding their management, Excellent at putting on a short-lived show, Entertainment instead of value, 1 hit (project) wonders or single-genre performers, Et cetera What is wrong with Senior or Principal Software Engineer who has an established and proven passion for the business? Rather do we mean quite the opposite, someone who: rolls up the sleeves and gets to work, takes appropriate direction and helps influence teams, programs in lessons' learned and proper practices, provides timely communication to the whole team, can code and understand multiple languages, understands the science and theory behind computation, Is there a trend to diversify the software engineering ranks? How many software rockstars can you hire before your band starts breaking up? Sure, there are lots of folks doing this stuff on their own, maybe even a rare few who do coding for show, but I wager the majority is for business. I don't see ads for rockstar accountants, or rockstar machinists, or rockstart CFOs. What makes the software programmer and their hiring departments lean towards this kind of job title?

• App Engine charges in November 2011 [closed]

  I had a billing enabled test application on Google App Engine left over from early 2011. I have not received a bill in many months because I have not been hitting the URL and according to the activity monitor, nobody has. Then unexpectedly in November 2011, I received 2 bills in as many weeks for quite minimal amounts. Checking the monitor it looks like nobody has been hitting the URL and according to the SQL-like search, there is nothing in the Datastore. I know that GAE has left the "preview" in recent weeks but I am not sure how that would affect what is essentially a dormant application with no Datastore objects. Has GAE started charging for completely unused applications in recent weeks? Edit: Most of my applications were already disabled and I have just disabled the only one that was enabled but unused the past several months. If I get another bill next week that should be informative.

  I am wanting a local phone number that I like. I have found one that I like. When I call the number that I want it says "this number has not been allocated" I have looked up and found the company that owns that number. How do I go about acquiring that number from the company. I spoke with someone who sells major phone packages and he said that if I signed up with them he could get the number for me. He said that there is a change of ownership form that the send to get the number. So I know it can be done. I am hoping that someone with industry specific knowledge in this area can guide me in getting this number.

  Possible Duplicate: When to use abstract classes instead of interfaces and extension methods in C#? Why are interfaces useful? What is the point of an interface? What other reasons are there to write interfaces rather than abstract classes? What is the point of having every service class have an interface? Is it bad habit not using interfaces? I am reading Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Step by Step which I feel it is a very good book on introducing you to the C# language. I have just finished reading a chapter on interfaces and although I understood the syntax of creating and using interfaces I have trouble of understanding the point on why should I use them? Correct me If I am wrong but in an interface you can only declare methods names and parameters.The body of the method should be declared in the class that inherits the interface. So in this case why should I declare an interface if I am going to declare the entire method in the class that inherits that interface? What is the point? Does this have something to do with the fact that a class can inherit multiple interfaces?

  here's the situation: This company offers local home services (construction...), but also fabricates many custom items that can be shipped nationally, and even internationally. Since i started working on this website, it has ranked pretty well on alexa global and locally, and i have made many SEO improvements that doubled the visits to the website in 6 months. The website is listed in many different directories (dmoz & etc...), maps (google maps & etc...), business listing sites (yelp & etc..), trade specific websites (angie's list, houzz & etc...), state specific business listings and etc, there are many links to pictures displayed on the website, links to the website itself, i have a google analytics and webmaster tools account, with sitemaps, newsletters, facebook page.... the list goes on and on. All of which have been working pretty well locally. We have had some success with doing business in other states and even other countries, but it is still a pretty small percentage of the market. I also advertise on google adwords locally, and since this would be the obvious answer, my question is: Without paid advertisement, how can i improve the visibility of this local business website nationally to attract customers in all US States?
