• Why are there different programming languages [closed]

  I'm not asking about the usefulness of the languages that do exist already: I already know, and agree, that different languages are better for different purposes. However, why don't they just have a single language that can do it all? Why, when C# was created, they didn't keep everything from C and C++ and just add a few things, so that it can be used as both a low-level and high-level language? I see no harm in adding all kinds of commands to a single language that would allow it to be good for everything, and even eliminate the need for all other languages. Someone from another thread said that if there's a flaw in a certain language, its successor might not have it. However, why don't we just update that language to remove the flaw, and/or add anything that's missing? Arrays are different in Java and C#, but why not have them both, just use different commands for them? And so on...

• How to attend one off lectures? [closed]

  Many times, we come across one-off lectures from famous Computer Scientists. Last year, I came across one by Ms. Barbara Liskov, but I could not go because the University Hall was bit far. Tomorrow, there is one by Dr. Knuth! Now the problem I am facing is, "I don't know much about the material he is going to talk", so I am not sure if I should plan and I fear it will be like going for a "temple". :) What is your advise and general strategy that you have followed whenever you wanted to attend a talk or lecture wherein, it may have been worthwhile if it were an introductory tutorial, but instead you were sitting in an advanced 1 hour lecture by a famous scientist.

• What relational database system should I learn? [closed]

  At the moment i know sqlite (my favorite), mysql (its ok, i get annoyed) and i do not want to learn ms/t sql (it only allows one nullable row if the column is unique). I am thinking about learning a new database system. My requirements for it is Must allow multiple connections at once (read and write) All or data i choose must be ACID compliant Performance should be good. I have a 17gb table in one project. It should perform well on read and transactional writes. With mysql it took hours to restore it and there were no foreign keys on that specific table. It only finished in a workday because i found a suggestion to adjust a setting which i think was key-buffer. And it still took hours Unique columns that allow more then one row to be null. I shouldn't have to say it but dammit MS. Allows one to make ongoing backups. Something like 'binary logs'. Some relatively small amounts of data i can grab and apply it to my local db to have it in sync with the one on the server. Table joins. I rather not write a bunch of queries to simulate a join What I would like but is not required Foreign keys. This may be a requirement later Open sourced Fair tool support. So i can measure queries, easily backup/restore, etc .NET and C (or C++) interface. (I seen one that uses raw tcp with JSON which was okish) Good subquery support. Once i was working with an older version of mysql (i believe <5.1 but it could have been 5.1) and i had to write many queries to do one query because it couldn't do subqueries. Or maybe it couldnt do it efficiently and died bc of memory limitations with a huge dataset. What db system should i learn?

• Freezes if desktop effects is used [closed]

  I have found that using desktop effects in Ubuntu versions later than 8.10 causes the desktop to freeze after a few seconds on my PC. the command lspci -nn gave the following 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02) and with lspci -k I have 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 The intel graphics cards seems to have some performence issues with xorg driver. However I have not noticed any freeze in Ubuntu 8.10. There are some workarounds at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes to make them work. But I can't find out what workaround should I do with my graphics controller. I have tried workaround F but it did not help. can anyone help me find a workaround for my graphics card? and is it actually possible to use desktop effect in this graphics card ?

Do I move to VPS and install older PHP or should we rebuild with newer PHP? When working remotely with programers what is the protocol regarding delivery of all code? I have worked with different apps and therefore I do have some experience with the Android SDK Platform in general. However, my question is this, how do you think an Android based project would go down with potential employers? • C# Rendering Engine for Roguelike [closed]

  I'm trying my hand at designing a roguelike, and I need a pretty simple 2D rendering engine that works with C# Its as simple as it gets, I want to be able to drop sprites somewhere on a grid, with some sort of menus/text on the side; that sort of thing. The (very complicated) game itself would be decoupled from the interface I've looked into a number of engines and they all seem to be very complicated/support much more things than I need. Right now I'm planning on making my own using either XNA or OpenTK - but I was wondering whether anyone has any suggestions for less-complicated rendering engines which might make my job easier.   Possible Duplicate: Comparison of backup tools I have read favorable reviews for 'Back In Time' for the purpose stated above. Still I am posting this question as I have some demands in my mind. Few years back I was using ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery by IBM on my Lenovo PC under Windows. That provided me nice features like compressed backups, boot time options - OS Repair, Restore entire OS, restore entire system to an older date, restore individual files etc. Out of these the feature I liked the most was compressed backups. Similar features are available in software like Norton Ghost too. In Back In Time I was surprised to see that the snapshot takes up same amount of space as that of the original contents, no compression at all. Furthermore, I was not able to find options to change the compression ratio etc. under settings. According to me compression of backups is a must have feature. Therefore, can anyone suggest me any other utility which can serve the purpose. I insist on GUI based tool since I don't want to mess up with backups!

Surprisingly, I wasn't able to find similar questions on this site, so there may be duplicate questions out there that I could use but just didn't find.   Apologies if this is the wrong forum. Please move if necessary I want to back up all my photos and videos online. Some videos are HD and up to 2GB in size. Does anyone know of any good sites? Flcker and Picasca seem the obvious ones but there seem to be limits on size. I have also heard bad things about the Picasca UI. I basically want to remove most of the photos from my laptop HD and then sync with web when I want to download them. Viewing via mobile is not a big thing for me. • How to switch off? [closed]

  While I've programmed software for many years, I've only recently started doing so professionally and have noticed a bit of a problematic pattern. I hope this is the best place to pose such a question, as I am interested in others' experiences and solutions... Writing software is, by its nature, a cerebral exercise. When coding for my own sake, I would do so until I was satisfied; even if that meant going all night. Now I'm coding in exchange for goods and services, on projects that are inherently uninteresting to me, I want to 'switch off' when it's time to go home. Maybe you consider that to be a 'bad attitude', but I just don't feel that whatever I'm working on is worth caring about after-hours. Besides, my employer doesn't exactly have the infrastructure required to make out-of-office changes; I can't just clone a repo and even remote login is a PITA. Anyway, the problem I'm experiencing is that, while I'm not particularly overworked or stressed, if I'm faced with a problem, my brain will work on a solution. Generally, it won't give up. Hence I can't switch off and, sometimes, the problem or the solution is significant enough that it disrupts my sleep. While, paradoxically, this doesn't seem to affect my coding ability, it can have a profound impact of the rest of my life. I get increasingly low as I get tired. So far, the best solutions I've found are writing little notes on the matter (and, say, e-mailing them back to my work address) and exercise. Neither of these can switch me off entirely and, as the week progresses, exercise especially becomes untenable due to tiredness. TL;DR How can you stop from being a coding zombie?

We have several organizations that provide info about them, but you must pay quite a lot for them to only show you the list of vacancies.
