• Document Management System - Where to Store Files?

  Hey, stack! I'm on charge of building an ASP.NET MVC Document Management System. It have to be able to do basic document management tasks like adding, editing and searching entries and also perform versioning. Anyways, I'm targeting PDF, Office and many image formats as the file attached to each document entry in the database. My question is: What design guidelines do pros follow when building the storage mechanism? Do they store the document files in the file system? Database? How file uploading is handled? I used to upload the files to a temporal location while the user was editing the data and move it to permanent storage when the user confirmed the entry creation. Is this good? Any suggestions on improvement?

• The difference between the 'Local System' account and the 'Network Service' account?

  I have written a Windows service that spawns a separate process. This process creates a COM object. If the service runs under the 'Local System' account everything works fine, but if the service runs under the 'Network Service' account, the external process starts up but it fails to create the COM object. The error returned from the COM object creation is not a standard COM error (I think it's specific to the COM object being created). So, how do I determine how the two accounts, 'Local System' and 'Network Service' differ? These built-in accounts seem very mysterious and nobody seems to know much about them.

• flex setting button width to text width

  I am creating a nav in flex that pulls in buttons dynamically from xml. THe problem i am having is setting the button width to the text width. currently the buttons are all the same width and if the text is larger then it just cuts off. I've tried a few ways of doing this: Setting button width to 100% On creation of the button try to set the width of the button to the text programmatically. Something like evt.target.width = evt.target.textWidth; Anyone know the correct way to do this?

• Drawing Sprites for iOS games on iPad

  So, I'm quite new and confused on the way to tackle creating sprites/sprite sheets for iOS games. I own the full CS5 sweet and have been told that fireworks is the best way to go for creating these (although I don't have the slightest idea in how yet and would love some tutorials/books specifying sprite sheet creation). My thoughts directed me towards tablet drawing, as I am awful at drawing with a mouse and/or tablet without a screen on it (such as a basic wacom). I was thinking about getting an iPad, as this would provide me with an iPad for testing purposes and a tablet. Does anyone know if it's possible (or even a good idea) to draw out your sprites on the iPad. Is it possible to export them out into Fireworks and such?

• VMWare Workstation 8 Disk I/O & Hard Faults

  I have VMWare Workstation 8 installed on a host machine with the following specs: Intel i5 2500k CPU 16GB DDR3 1600 ram 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black HD I have two Windows 7 virtual machines configured (currently running one at a time but will be operating both at once when my 32GB RAM kit arrives in a couple days). Each one is configured with 8GB of RAM and no tweaks/performance customizations or anything done. All of the VMWare settings are the defaults. When I boot into these machines and run various programs (Visual Studio, Outlook, etc), I can hear the disk thrashing quite a bit and checking Resource Monitor, I can see that I'm getting anywhere between 300-800 hard faults per second. From the host machine, it shows they're coming from the VMWare image. If I go to the virtual machine, whatever app I'm currently loading is the image that's causing the hard faults. As I understand it, hard faults are (simply) when an address in memory has been swapped out to the page file and has to be read from the page file instead of from memory. I don't understand why this is happening though. With 8GB of ram on the guest machine and 6.5GB available, what could be causing this? I know Windows 7 supposedly improved on page file management over XP but it seems excessive for this kind of slowdown, disk thrashing and high hard fault count when I have that much free RAM. Is there anything I can to to improve the performance in my guest machines? On the host machine, I can open/run any applications at all and hard faults stays around 0 with low disk I/O.

  Hello. I am working on a Silverlight/WCF application and of course have numerous async calls throughout the Silverlight program. I was wondering on how is the best way to handle the creation of the client classes and subscribing. Specifically, if I subscribe to an event in a method, after it returns does it fall out of scope? internal MyClass { public void OnMyButtonClicked() { var wcfClient = new WcfClient(); wcfClient.SomeMethodFinished += OnMethodCompleted; wcfClient.SomeMethodAsync(); } private void OnMethodCompleted(object sender, EventArgs args) { //Do something with the result //After this method does the subscription to the event //fall out of scope for garbage collection? } } Will I run into problems if I call the function again and create another subscription?   Hi, I'm using Delphi7 and i need a solution to a big problem.Can someone provide me a faster way for searching through files and folders than using findnext and findfirst? because i also process the data for each file/folder (creation date/author/size/etc) and it takes a lot of time...I've searched a lot under WinApi but probably I haven't see the best function in order to accomplish this. All the examples which I've found made in Delphi are using findfirst and findnext... Also, I don't want to buy components or use some free ones... Thanks in advance!

• Interacting With Class Objects in Ruby

  How can I interact with objects I've created based on their given attributes in Ruby? To give some context, I'm parsing a text file that might have several hundred entries like the following: ASIN: B00137RNIQ -------------------------Status Info------------------------- Upload created: 2010-04-09 09:33:45 Upload state: Imported Upload state id: 3 I can parse the above with regular expressions and use the data to create new objects in a "Product" class: class Product attr_reader :asin, :creation_date, :upload_state, :upload_state_id def initialize(asin, creation_date, upload_state, upload_state_id) @asin = asin @creation_date = creation_date @upload_state = upload_state @upload_state_id = upload_state_id end end After parsing, the raw text from above will be stored in an object that look like this: [#<Product:0x00000101006ef8 @asin="B00137RNIQ", @creation_date="2010-04-09 09:33:45 ", @upload_state="Imported ", @upload_state_id="3">] How can I then interact with the newly created class objects? For example, how might I pull all the creation dates for objects with an upload_state_id of 3? I get the feeling I'm going to have to write class methods, but I'm a bit stuck on where to start.

• Performance decrease in every game and application

  When I start a game, initially it runs smoothly, but after a couple of minutes, the performance gradually decreases to the point of being unplayable (1-2 FPS). The sound also starts to lag at this point. This does not happen every time I start my PC, usually exiting the game, rebooting, then starting the game again solves the problem, and I can play with perfect FPS for as long as I want. I could not find any deterministic reason when this happens and when doesn't. It happens in every game I tried (SWTOR, Diablo 3, Skyrim), and not even games, but simple applications like a browser or the Control Panel can get unusably slow. This is a brand new PC I bought three months ago, and this problem occurs since the first day I've been using it. Could you provide any advice how to further diagnose the problem? I tried to reinstall Windows, and tried different video card drivers, but it did not help. It would be important to know whether this is a hardware or software problem, because I can use the warranty if it is a hardware issue. (I did not want to return the PC yet, because I can't reproduce the issue deterministically.) • Oracle (PL/SQL): Is UPDATE RETURNING concurrent?

  I'm using table with a counter to ensure unique id's on a child element. I know it is usually better to use a sequence, but I can't use it because I have a lot of counters (a customer can create a couple of buckets and each of them needs to have their own counter, they have to start with 1 (it's a requirement, my customer needs "human readable" keys). I'm creating records (let's call them items) that have a prikey (bucket_id, num = counter). I need to guarantee that the bucket_id / num combination is unique (so using a sequence as prikey won't fix my problem). The creation of rows doesn't happen in pl/sql, so I need to claim the number (btw: it's not against the requirements to have gaps). My solution was: UPDATE bucket SET counter = counter + 1 WHERE id = param_id RETURNING counter INTO num_forprikey; PL/SQL returns var_num_forprikey so the item record can be created. Question: Will I always get unique num_forprikey even if the user concurrently asks for new items in a bucket?

  Hello! I have a localized application, and I am wondering if it is possible to have the DisplayName for a certain model property set from a Resource. I'd like to do something like this: public class MyModel { [Required] [DisplayName(Resources.Resources.labelForName)] public string name{ get; set; } } But I can't to it, as the compiler says: "An attribute argument must be a constant expression, typeof expression or array creation expression of an attribute parameter type" :( Are there any workarounds? I am outputting labels manually, but I need these for the validator output!

  Hi, I tried using Apple's shell script to automate doc set creation with every build (and loading that in XCode) - http://developer.apple.com/tools/creatingdocsetswithdoxygen.html but found that it had some bugs. Firstly it's not updating the entries in doxygen.config, perhaps one needs to put the settings in the exact hierarchy as it appears in the native doxygen file (?).   There are many ways to represent the +1 million UTF-8 characters. Take the latin capital "A" with macron (A). This is unicode code point U+0100, hex number 0xc4 0x80, decimal number 196 128, and binary 11000100 10000000. I would like to create a collection of the first 65,535 UTF-8 characters for use in testing applications. These are all unicode characters up to code point U+FFFF (byte3). Is it possible to do something like a for($x=0) loop and then convert the resulting decimal to another base (like hex) which would allow the creation of the matching unicode character? • UITableView loading before variables being set

  I have a label on a UITableView. When clicked it will refresh my tableview and set the top cell's height. When I am setting the cell height, I am checking if a certain variable is TRUE. If true it will show the large height, if false, the smaller height. At the time of cell height creation, my variable is always false. It is a member variable and its value is being set when the user clicks on the label. How can I make sure that the variable is set before the table refreshes?

• jQuery UI get the sorted position of LI element in UL

  I'm using jQuery UI's sortable for my UL list. Each time the user sorts the list, I want each li element to update it's "position" attribute to it's position in the list. <ul> <li position="1">a</li> <li position="2">b</li> <li position="3">c</li> </ul> So when a user swaps c with a, the position will also update. I tried to use .each but it seems that javascript doesn't follow the order of how the LI elements are displayed but the order of the element's creation.

• Correct model for a database with a table for each user.

  Kinda stuck here... I have an application with lets say 5000 rows of data per user and was wondering if it was right or wrong to do it this way: On user account creation a new table is created (UserData_[UserID]) or should I just have 1 table for userdata and have everything in there with a column for userid? The reason I am stuck at the moment is that it seems NHibernate isn't able to be mapped to dynamic table names without creating another ISessionFactory which has alot of overhead AFAIK. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Embarrassingly parallel workflow creates too many output files

  On a Linux cluster I run many (N > 10^6) independent computations. Each computation takes only a few minutes and the output is a handful of lines. When N was small I was able to store each result in a separate file to be parsed later. With large N however, I find that I am wasting storage space (for the file creation) and simple commands like ls require extra care due to internal limits of bash: -bash: /bin/ls: Argument list too long. Each computation is required to run through a qsub scheduling algorithm so I am unable to create a master program which simply aggregates the output data to a single file. The simple solution of appending to a single fails when two programs finish at the same time and interleave their output. I have no admin access to the cluster, so installing a system-wide database is not an option. How can I collate the output data from embarrassingly parallel computation before it gets unmanageable?

• Binding for MinWidth property does not work in Silverlight

  I have noticed something very unusual today, I need to bind "MinWidth" property of TextBlock to some value, however following example does not work. It only accepts MinWidth at a time of creation, but after that it is not affected at all if LeftWidth property is changed at runtime, however if I bind LeftWidth property to WidthProperty it works well. Binding b = new Binding("LeftWidth"); // following never changes layout of control tb.SetBinding(TextBlock.MinWidthProperty,b); However, this one works correctly, // following never changes layout of control tb.SetBinding(TextBlock.WidthProperty,b); Now I also did hook events and tried to do InvalidateMeasure and InvalidateArrange on TextBlock, but it has no effect. Seems like Changing MinWidth Property after layout pass does not work at all. Can it be a bug in Silverlight? or Does anyone have any idea at all why MinWidth does not redo the layout?

• Generate Windows .lnk file with PHP

  Hello, I'm working on a project which involves an FTP server running ProFTPd and a PHP/MySQL backend that creates accounts for users. Upon the creation of accounts, users are sent e-mails with their account details and instructions for downloading FileZilla or CyberDuck, depending on their OS, detected via user-agent string. To make things easier for novices, I thought of having .lnk files generated for FileZilla with the account logins details as parameters, so they would just have to click on the .lnk files to open up the server. This is not crucial feature but more of a technical challenge. My questions are : is this even feasible ? are there any alternatives (eg. generating a .bat with a script pointing to the Filezilla executable ?) are there any issues, perhaps with relative / absolute paths pointing to the executable ? to go even further, what would be the simplest way of providing users with software with FTP access on a single account / single server (web interface is not an option).

• Set NTFS Permissions with DirectorySecurity after created Active Dirctory Groups c#

  Hi I am a little confused about setting NTFS Permissions to a directory after I created Active Directory Groups (both programmatically). When I created the Active Directory Objects then I have to wait a few seconds to set the NTFS Permissions. If I have not this timeout then I get sometimes an error message that the identify (active directory groupname) could not found. Is it possible that the DirectorySecurity-Class from DirectoryInfo-Class has an different algorithm to get the idenfity from active directory objects? Because when I checking the existing of the groups in active directory with System.DirectoryServices all the objects exist suddenly after creation. Kind regards
