  If there are two physically separate hard drives, should they be treated as two pre-defined partitions? If yes: should they be treated as two primary partitions (including one or two of them can become extended partition(s) and be further subdivided into logical partitions)? Or they (or one part of each) can be treated as two logical partitions of a extended partition? Thanks! I intended to ask if there can be a primary/logical partition that are partially on both hard drives? And if there can be a logical partition on a hard drive and another logical partition on another hard, and the two logical partitions belong to the same extended partition? I guess the answers to both questions are no?

  The problem begins here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/118224/i-have-big-problem-with-mount-partition. I tried to solve the problem by myself, but I messed up. I opened gparted magic and opened my hard disk and chose Create Partition Table and the disaster was done. All the partitions on my hard disk (500 GB) have been removed. What can I do? I tried to use PTDD Partition Table Doctor 3.5, but it didn't help. This drive had important data that I need to get back.

• Why is my PC boot time slow when USB HDD attached?

  I have a USB Hard disk that I am using as a secondary drive just for extra storage. When this is attached and I start my PC the second screen says searching for mass storage dives for about 5 minutes before continuing on. The same happens when I have a USB pen disk attached upon boot. If I attach the device after the PC has loaded then it is very quick however plugging and unplugging is not ideal. Is there away to disable this in the BIOS as I cannot instantly see an option. On boot it informs me I have an American Trends AMIBIOS in the BIOS setup it states the version as v02.58 2006. This is running on a ASUS MV2 Motherboard.

  I need a large amount of external storage for an upcoming project. I'm planning on purchasing 10 2TB external drives. I need them all hooked up to a single machine at the same time. What issues will I run into? I plan on using 2 power strips and having them all externally powered from the wall. I will use a USB hub to plug in all the drives. I need drive access time to be as fast as possible. I am using Ubuntu Linux(64 bit). Will I be able to mount 10 drives?

  I'd like to know what's with all those unnamed drives. I've always thought they are what they say they are (recoveries and what not), why are there so many of them? and why do they all say 100% Free (i.e. they're all empty!). If that's the case, what happened to my recovery? Info: I'm on Dell Inspiron 7520 Windows 8 Single Language (Had Kali installed on SSD a couple of days ago, now I've just deleted that and will install Kali on VM on SSD, that's drive (S:). • Failing Seagate HDD - Not Recognised

  I am having a look at a friend's computer which contains a 500GB Seagate HDD. Unfortunately the HDD is not recognised by the BIOS menu and it beeps 11 times upon powerup. I've moved the HDD to another laptop but the problem remains. I've downloaded SeaTools for DOS (Seagate's Diagnostic tool) but unfortunately to no avail and the disc remains unseen when using this DOS boot disc. The HDD is only 6 months old so I'm very surprised at this but it appears a common problem with Seagate 2.5" HDDs as well as other HDDs manufactured by Seagate. I intend to try it in an external caddy on Thursday when back in work and also through a forensic writeblocker but just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions? I am of the opinion it is some chip on the HDD board which prevents it spinning due to a fault. If so, I've lost to deactivate this just so I can simply recover the data on the drive and start with a new disc. Thanks

• I'm having two Windows 7 installed and running in my laptop. How can I delete the other one?

  I have another concern with my laptop. When I had a problem with the microphone, I tried to restore the system. But sadly, I had a mistake with the process and accidentally it was formatted. Its a built in laptop. (Toshiba m840, Windows 7, 64 bit) After the format process, programs were automatically installed. Until a friend of mine told me that I might have 2 Windows installed already. When we checked the program, he was right. I'm having 2 program files folders, which means I really have 2 Windows installed and running in my laptop. Supposed to be, there should be only 1 right? Can anyone help me how to delete the other Windows? Because I think it is occupying much space in the hard drive. They say it could make my laptop become slower.

  Hi everyone, Please bear with me as being a bit of a newcomer at 19" rack-mounted equipment. I've thought a fair bit lately about the best way of getting 4x or 6x of 2.5" hard drives into my rack and are right now currently slightly confused about would be the best (economical) solution. After scouting the market, I've found this type of disk array units that offers built in RAID and a lot of drive slots and a truckload of geek cred, but at a price that just isn't going to fit in my budget. I've also found these type of cute adapters that takes two 2.5" drives in one 3.5" slot, but I will obviously need a chassie with a lot of 3.5" spaces in order to make it work. So what is the most economical way to house my harddrives in my rack?

• Boost Up My Old Laptop Using a SSD

  I have an old laptop Lenovo SL400 (Core2Due T9550 2.66GHz / 4GB DDR2 Ram). Since I can't afford to buy a new laptop, I thought maybe I could throw an ADATA SP600 64GB SSD as primary drive and move my current HDD to DVD-ROM space by using HDDCADDY. I know that 64gb will come short after installing Visual Studio, SQL Server, etc. So is there anyway to just install the kernel part of windows on SSD and the rest on HDD. Doesn't windows have built-in support to do this? (ReadyBoost is out of picture since it's just simple caching)

• windows 7 partition disappeared

  I have a VPCF2 with windows 7 installed on it. I was working on my computer when on of my drives (D) disappeared. I can see it in Computer Management>Disk Management and it'd marked as Healthy(Primary Partition). When I right click on it the only options that are enabled are Delete Volume and Help. So I cannot assign a drive letter to it (not even in safe mode). I tried System Restore and it failed. I tried to boot the system using ubuntu tha was installed on my system but that fails too because it was installed on partition D. I'm hopeless. What can I do?

• Debian can't see one of my hard drives

  Today I installed Linux Debian in dual boot with Windows 7. I have 3 hard drives, two for starage and one for the operating systems. The problem is with the two storage drives which are exactly same. In debian I can only see one of them. Before Debian I had Ubuntu and there wasn't any problem. Also I didn't changed anything from that drive. What should I do? I don't want to format it or delete anything.

  I have on my desk three 160 GB disks that were once part of an HP Proliant Windows 2003 Server. They may have been part of a RAID configuration of some sort. They may or may not be damaged in some way. When I interface them via USB, one of them shows up as a drive, but unformatted. The others show up as uninitialized disks in manager. An alternative explanation is that the two drives were simply not unused. What's my first step? I've recovered data off damaged drives before but never had anything to do with RAID configs. How can I even tell if any type of RAID was used?

  I had a PC which operating system was Windows XP , I reinstalled the Windows , formatting just the C drive , and had my new version of XP installed there , but when it was installed and I tried to open the other drives (meaning for example D , E , .. ) I got this error : i9wjpqc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close I trying googling it , and I ended up with knowing it's a malware, so my guess is that my previous OS had this malware on its other drives and the source was located in C , now that I've formatted C , other drives still have the malware, so they can't be opened :( and suggestion to get the drives to open ?

  I really need help on this it's Saturday long weekend.No customer service help:( .I recently build new server/light duty desktop.Main purpose is only file sharing.Raid configuration :Adaptec 6805 ,8x 3TB HDD WD Red,Intel RES2SV240 expander,Raid 6,set in Intel mobo DZ 77GA-70K.I upgraded firmwares, but I'm having strange problem. During Build Verify segment 7 got missing.I just reinsert drive into hot swap bay and it started to rebuild Array.After rebuild was done another segments 0 and 5 gone missing while build/verify.I reinserted drives and now I'm praying that raid is going to rebuild successfully from remaining 6 drives,because i already transfer some data on it(I know it was bad idea).I checked S.M.A.R.T on missing drives , it only says link failure and aborted commands on one of them.No Errors on HDDs.Connections and cables are good.I added 2 fans blowing on RAID controller because it was getting too hot, so I guess overheating shouldn't be issue.What can be possibly wrong? • How to stop windows 7 from asking to format a disk?

  Hey guys, I have this USB flash drive with a Linux partition that I use inside VirtualBox. Each time I insert it into the USB port, windows keeps asking if it should format it. Is there anyway to disable Windows from asking that? Thanks. EDIT: Disabling auto-run has not resolved the problem unfortunately. Windows will still check if the disk contains a partition it knows about, and ask to format if it doesn't know it. Really nice try though, any other ideas?

• Question about getting information off an old HD...

  Ok so my old cpu was a sony vaio. its kinda old and had xp on it. My gf thrashed it - the cd drive went and she tried fixing it by messing with the configurations bios etc. the actual laptop is really fried the keyboard doesnt work, etc. However the harddrive is still intact. I tried putting the HD in my new cpu (toshiba runnig win7) and it looks like its gonna boot up it goes to the screen with the logo and the status bar starts to load. then it flashes a blue screen for a split second, and goes to the black screen where it says windows did not shut down properly and gives options to (start windows normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with prompts) ive tried every option but it always goes back to this screen. I need to get into the hd cuz i have very important files. is there anyway?

• Why is my computer running slower after I just installed more RAM and a new HDD?

  I just bought 4 GB of ram (2x2GB) and a 1TB hard drive and installed them, upgrading from my original 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I put the 2GB sticks in 1st and 3rd slots and the 1GB stick in 2nd. Now with my new ram and HDD my computer is running MUCH slower and I dont know why. I've tried restarting just to see what happens and I noticed that even the Windows XP starting music is lagging. If anyone could help that would be fantastic. It's hard even to type this out.

• Sync two external harddrives?

  A little mishap happened earlier today and i am thinking i should have a copy of my external harddrive since 10% of it is very valuable. What is the best solution to keep two external harddrive in sync? i'll probably use one as regular and maybe use the other only to copy data. The easiest way to keep it in sync is to clear one drive and copy the other but 1T of data will take a long time. Whats a good existing app that will keep them in sync? freeware preferred.

My question concerns only a data partition containing files and folders (not the boot partition with the Operating System files!)   I wanted to create a bootable usb from an iso image and i accidentally put as the output of the dd, instead of my usb drive, one of my hard disks. The iso was 3,3 GB and my disk is 1TB! And it was almost full. Can i at least restore the data that has not been overwritten? Right now i can't even mount it.   here's my situation: I had an HDD with Windows 8 installed (UEFI mode). I bought a SSD and wanted to do a clean install of Windows, so I thought that disabling the HDD and leaving the SSD as the only drive when installing was the right procedure to install the boot manager on the SSD. Unfortunately, after I plugged the HDD back in, the computer won't boot unless I select from the BIOS directly the SSD as the boot device. I guess the problem is that I have two Windows Boot Managers on two separate drives and they conflict. How would I solve this problem (excluding a format of the HDD, because I need to access data on the old Windows partition and, ideally, I would like to be able to boot that partition)?

  The answers are unclear wherever I look. I have two 2TB drives for a RAID1 and I want to mirror them while having two partitions on the drives. One partition will be 100GB and contain programs, the other partition will be 1.8TB and contain personal files. Some may ask why? The answer is that my programs are currently on another older drive and I want to save time and pain uninstalling and re-installing critical programs while merely copying them to the new drives via Shadowcopy. When I create the RAID1, will both partitions be mirrored? Is this possible? I am sorry if I am being confusing or unclear.

• RAID 0 disk failure, how to recover the RAID?

  Situation is this. A PC with 2 hard disks, in an RAID 0 Array. The electronics on one of the disks has failed. I can not find the same board for the disk (I've tried this, removed board from the OK disk, and the second, the damaged one, works fine). I've made an image with "dd" on linux on a new hard drive (same size, not same model) and now I get "Offline member" in the RAID config screen. Will I succeed to recover the data which is stored on the drives, any help, any experience with this kind of problem. And surly, I know it was stupid to put the disks in RAID 0 and store data on them :(

• Recover snap server data

  Hi I have a snap server 110 the machine powers on ok and the healthcheck passes but unable to connect no responce on the assigned ip or any ability to reach the device via the snap server manager. Believe the device is powering on but not loading the OS. Tried pulling the disk running and hooking up to a windows PC via USB, and using disk internals linux reader I am unable to access two of the partitions. ( one of which is the large data partition).   Help please! My backup method of choice is to clone my "working" drive to another identical drive. I have 2 windows drives and I clone my working one to the other one once per month. No problem - each will boot if I select it. Now with the lack of future support for XP, I am getting familiar with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I have it on one drive and I have a second identical drive that I want to be able to clone it to once/month. Not as necessary to do this with Ubuntu as with windows, I know, but I'm anal. So I have followed #47209 MestreLion's procedure with just the two Ubuntu drives "on line". I.e., boot my "working" drive with Live CD, use Gparted to be sure I know what's what, open terminal and enter and execute the dd command, Go to bed till the clone is done, shut down the computer, disconnect the input/source drive, boot up using BIOS to select the remaining output drive. The drive starts fine but all is not OK. It puts up a screen that says I'm on a Guest Session and asks for a password. Well, for one thing I have my Ubuntu set up to start without a password being entered. I have one, of course, I put it in but it isn't accepted. I can't get by this Guest Session screen. I am fine, of course. I can disconnect this drive, hook up my "main" ubuntu drive and all the rest, and go on with my business. But I don't have the desired "emergency backup" drive working where I could jump on and use it immediately if I needed it. Can someone give me some guidance here?? What (else) do I need to do. Love Ubuntu but learning. Thanks, Wes.
