• 3d user experience with HTML5 and Javascript

  I've to build a 3D user experience with HTML5 and any required JS library which provides such functionality. 3D scene consists of a cylindrical pipe and surface. It has 360 degree rotation and can zoom in and out. As user selects a parameter, specific value of that parameter at various depth of pipe in surface should display. I've searched for HTML5 3d and JS libraries and found three.js could help for this.Also found this useful presentation on HTML 3d engine: http://projects.mariusgundersen.net/OnGameStart/#1 .But as this is my first time with HTML5 3d modeling, how should I initiate to build ? What parameters should be considered ? Which tools and libraries would best fit for such requirements ? I would like to create a 3d model using HTML5 and JS 3d engine as shown in the 1st image.

• What is a TFS Agile Issue?

  With TFS2010 using the "MSF for Agile Software Development v5" process template, I'm having some difficulty in understanding exactly what an Issue is. The most specific documentation I've been able to find is this. Is an Issue a higher-level item for which we will probably generate a Bug for after some investigation in code/requirements? Or is an Issue something different than a Bug because it has not actually a mistake in code but is more of a critical oversight in design (for example, there was never an attempt to create a datepicker for all date fields and this is a UX issue but not really a bug) and therefore a change request of sorts? Or is it something different?

• asp:Menu Not working on webhost

  I'm using Visual Studio Web Express 2008 to develop an ASP.Net website. I have a master page that every page inherits from and on that master page I have the asp:menu control. On my local machine the menu control works just fine. The javascript is emitted and the links work as well. However, when I upload it to my webhost service provider, the javascript is not emitted and my links do not work. I'm getting a feeling that my service provider really doesn't know much about .Net as they suggested that I make sure that I upload the .js files which isn't necessary. Does anyone have any suggestions that I can give them? They're asking me what requirements are needed. It seems to me that something is not setup on their server properly but according to them, they have .Net 3.5 SP1 installed.

• Designing a state machine in C++

  I have a little problem that involves modelling a state machine. I have managed to do a little bit of knowledge engineering and 'reverse engineer' a set of primitive deterministic rules that determine state as well as state transitions. I would like to know what the best practises are regarding: How to rigorously test my states and state transitions to make sure that the system cannot end up in an undeetermined state. How to enforce state transition requirements (for example, it should be impossible to go directly from stateFoo to StateFooBar, i.e. to embue each state with 'knowlege' about the states it can transition to. Ideally, I would like to use clean, pattern based design, with templates wherever possible. I do need somewhere to start though and I would be grateful for any pointers (no pun intended), that are sent my way.

• What is the point in using a "real" database modeling tool?

  We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app). Some have suggested we use Visio to do all the diagramming and to generate the DDL, but others have suggested we use a dedicated database design tool, rather than a diagramming tool that is able to export DDL. Is there any benefit to using "real" DB design tools, such as ModelRight, over general tools like Visio? If so, what are those specific benefits? Edit: In a nutshell, what can real/dedicated tools do that something like Visio can't, and how much do these capabilities matter (from a best-practices standpoint, for example)

Requirements: Voice quality or better Intended for low power wifi transmission Broad support in existing software and devices (ie, windows media player, quicktime, vlc, iPhone, Android, etc). Royalty/patent free, or cheap to license Preferences: Low overhead TCP/IP based streaming protocol Voice grade codec (easy to implement in software, no DSP, 32bit CPU if needed) Would be nice if it supported HTML5 browsers, but is there any codec (such as raw) that is supported by the latest browsers that is lower overhead than MP3? • GKPeerStateAvailable for non existing peers?

  Hi, used this website for the long time to find answers, now need to ask on myself! :) I have implemented multi player for my game using GKSession and client/server approach, not using peer picker (up to 4 player allowed). I have one big problem which I can't find solution for. If you disconnect/reconnect server peer quickly enough, client peer will "remember" that host and will show it in the list of all available peers permanently, only turning wifi/bluetooth off resets this. So if I do this 5 times in a row, my client will show 5 available hosts with the same name! Anyone had experience with this? Any idea of workarounds? I should note that requirements for my game is iPhone SDK 3.0 for Bluetooth and 3.1 for Wifi as GKSession supports both now.

• Allow native DLL to output stdout / stderr in c# console application

  I have a native DLL which outputs via stdout / stderr. I have a C# console application which calls this DLL and outputs binary data to a parent C# application which started the C# console exe, processing stdout / stderr. Currently when I call the C# exe it works just fine (the DLL hooks up to the stdout of my console application and puts its data in just fine). Is this by design (and shouldn't be broken in future .NET framework versions)? Are there limitations on my managed code's deployment with this strategy (full-trust, permission requirements, GAC issues, etc)? I can't seem to find any documentation about stdout with a managed exe and an unmanaged dll both putting data in that standard output on MSDN. Thanks,

• How to write software for my touchpad?

  I have some ideas for improvements on my touchpad, ranging from the run of the mill scroll horizontally at the bottom, tapzones for right click, to more complicated ones. But I have no idea where to get started? I'm working on Windows 7 Home Premium, its an Asus laptop, and I have none of these options natively available to me. • What language/API to use for a standalone live-input audio visualizer app?

  I develop with Actionscript and was glad to see that AIR 2.0 was going to give access to mic input data. I planned to use this to create a visualizer set to the tempo of the incoming live audio. After doing a few days of google research it seems unlikely that it will be possible to analyze the data of the mic input in Flash/AIR. If anyone has ideas on how I can achieve this in AIR please let me know. (I'm open to workarounds.) That being said, I don't want to give up on the idea so I'm interested in suggestions for other language/API to use. My requirements for the app are: Run on OSX Two windows - one that can go fullscreen while the other(controller GUI) stays put Able to access live mic input data I've done reading on FFT and understand what needs to be done on the sound side so no need to help with that.

• Multiple xmlns attributes affect page performance?

  We are working on adding some Facebook Connect functionality to our site. Part of their requirements for FB Connect require adding several additional xmlns attributes to the html element. We are likely going to have 5 or 6 of their custom attributes by the time we're done, and I want to know if this will negatively affect our page performance. I.e. will these be additional resources that the browser has to download? I have checked in Firebug and I don't see additional requests, but I don't know if that is because requests are not made by the browser, or if Firebug simply doesn't track them.

  My team has grown fairly quickly from 1 to 5 over the last year or so and are very interested in changing our development style from Waterfall to a more iterative approach like Scrum. We work for a University and specialize in CRUD web apps for internal customers who are always changing requirements along the way. So, my question is...How do we best implement Scrum techniques? Supplemental concerns: Is it recommended to quit Waterfall "cold turkey" in order to facilitate the transition or do you feel a progressive approach is more effective? • Image bit depth values.

  REPHRASED QUESTION: I am coming up with a list of possible image bit depth values that could be used as a predefined reference list in my application. I could think of 8,16,24 and 32 bit depths. The image formats considered are BMP, JPEG, PNG and GIF. I understand the bit depth decides the quality and thereby the storage requirements for the image. The application is used to store user uploaded images(non-medical, non-DICOM). Are there more bit depths other than the ones mentioned above that i should be including in my list? Are there any stats on the usage of the images with bit depths? Appreciate your response!

• What are your build and release steps? When to increment build numbers?

  I am having trouble defining and automating my build process despite simple requirements: Every build should have a unique build number. Every tagged release should be reproducible What I have: A C++, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x, Subversion development environment. A build machine ( actually a virtual machine ) A version.h file with #defines for major, minor, and buildnumber. A script for incrementing the version.h buildnumber. A rpmbuild spec file that exports the tagged Subversion source, builds, and makes the rpm installer packages. Questions: Assuming multiple developers per project, when should the build number be incremented and version.h file be checked-in? The build machine? Some sort of Subversion hook? I see various options for how/where to publish/host it: Get my own domain and put it there Put it on Sourceforge Put it on Google Code Put it on Freshmeat ...? What are your experiences / recommendations? What's the current trend among software developers? My only requirements are that I ... can add my own logo on the website can put up some documentation there, get a nice URL that is easy to remember get SVN support (I would also be fine with just uploading a tarball for each new version, it just shouldn't force me to use CVS or any other version control system I'm not familiar with) and of course, the site shouldn't take ownership in the code etc. oh, and it should be free (ok, for registering my own domain I'll be willing to pay a little bit)

  Hello, I've written a C++ library that reads in this 3d model file (collada DAE). uptil now, I would output a list of triangles and handle each at rendering stage. But now, I need to attach some Bounding sphere information with the imported model. I need some advice on how should I organize this in code.   Dear All, Pardon me if you feel this has been answered numerous times, but I need answers to the following queries! Why data has to be aligned (on 4 byte/ 8 byte/ 2 byte boundaries)? Here my doubt is when the CPU has address lines Ax Ax-1 Ax-2 ... A2 A1 A0 then it is quite possible to address the memory locations sequentially. So why there is the need to align the data at specific boundaries? How to find the alignment requirements when I am compiling my code and generating the executatble? If for e.g the data alignment is 4 byte boundary, does that mean each consecutive byte is located at modulo 4 offsets? My doubt is if data is 4 byte aligned does that mean that if a byte is at 1004 then the next byte is at 1008 (or at 1005)? Your thoughts are much welcome. Thanks in advance! /MS

• Finding the best folder for all users on a Windows machine

  We are making a game which will add a level editor feature soon. We want the user to be able to put levels he's downloaded in a folder and then play it in the game, without any hassle. So, we're looking for a folder that anybody can find, open, write, read, and is multiuser. On Windows Vista / 7, the folder /Users/Public/ look like a great candidate. However, It's not listed in the .net enum System.Environment.SpecialFolder. I have went through them all, and checked what they yield on different Windows versions, and none live up to my requirements. I did find Environment.SpecialFolder.CommonApplicationData, that kinda works, but that folder is hidden (C:\ProgramData) and I assume most users don't display hidden folders. As it stands now, it looks like we'll have to settle for the personal documents folder, but we'd really like a multi user folder? Anyone have any tips? (Hard coding c:\Users\Public\ is out of the question, it will only work on english systems)

• ORM solutions (JPA; Hibernate) vs. JDBC

  I need to be able to insert/update objects at a consistent rate of at least 8000 objects every 5 seconds in an in-memory HSQL database. I have done some comparison performance testing between Spring/Hibernate/JPA and pure JDBC. I have found a significant difference in performance using HSQL.. With Spring/Hib/JPA, I can insert 3000-4000 of my 1.5 KB objects (with a One-Many and a Many-Many relationship) in 5 seconds, while with direct JDBC calls I can insert 10,000-12,000 of those same objects. I cannot figure out why there is such a huge discrepancy. I have tweaked the Spring/Hib/JPA settings a lot trying to get close in performance without luck. I want to use Spring/Hib/JPA for future purposes, expandability, and because the foreign key relationships (one-many and many-many) are difficult to maintain by hand; but the performance requirements seem to point towards using pure JDBC. Any ideas of why there would be such a huge discrepancy?

• Web Setup Project - Getting the Current Machine Name

  I've got a web setup project with a custom screen in it that asks for a machine name. Is there anyway to prepopulate this field with the current machines name? For the case that I need it for just including "Localhost" does not meet my requirements. "Environment.MachineName" will return the machine name within a code block which would be fine if I was needing it in a custom action. But it seems custom actions don't excecute until after you go through the installation wizard... So I cant actually use it. Anyway let me know what you think.

• Why do software engineers hate writing documentation?

  I ask because I quite enjoy it! I'm talking about design documentation and implementation notes (NOT user manuals), which are non-existent in most of the codebases I've been handed. I can understand why a developer wouldn't want to write requirements (that's the analyst's job) or the user documentation (that's a technical writer's job) but I don't get why developers hate writing design docs. I don't think I would feel as if I'd finished the job if I only wrote the code and walked away -- mainly because when I've been introduced to code-only situations I've seen how hard it is to figure out what's been done and what the software does. I would hate for people to suffer the same situation when inheriting my code. What makes you loath writing supporting documentation for your code?
