• Generate metadata of all files in a dir?

  We are working on a project that is quite big, and its stored in an SVN repository under different folders with many files all over the place. Quite often, it is hard to locate the document that has a certain keyword or phrase. Does anyone know of any program that will generate and index the metadata of all the files that are in these documentation folders? (most filetypes are: xls, doc, ppt). Windows Search and Google Desktop could be an option but that would generally index the whole hard drive, emails, etc and thats probably much more than what we need and would not be suited for something more folder specific. Example of what im looking for: a program or webpage where i enter "John Doe" and it will show me all files in MyProjectFolder/ that contain the keyword "John Doe". This of course will already be indexed somewhere so searches should be almost instantaneous. Is there such a tool or i am asking too much? Thanks in advance!

• Kaspersky processing error Explorer.exe (recycle bin)

  I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. Not sure if it's a bug, something to be concerned about, or an easy fix, etc. I usually just empty the recycle bin for a temporary fix, but would like to get to the root of the error. Thoughts?

• Double Click to open Office docs is slow, File -> Open is fast.

  I have 2 unique networks. They both share similar architecture: Windows 2003 SBS SP2 Running Symantec Endpoint Running Symantec Information Foundation Shared drives off a data partition Clients running Office 2003 or 2007 Connect to file server through mapped drives When users try to open a file from their local PC by double clicking, it will take 30-60 seconds to open. When they do File - Open, those same documents open up almost immediately. So far I've tried the following - CCleaner to parse the registry of outdated mapped drives - Disabled "using DDE" - Disabled A/V - Reboot Any ideas beyond that? Figured this question belongs here instead of SU since its the same issue on different networks.

• How do you manage updates without a staging environment: CentOS 6.3

  I am managing about 20 servers, many of them virtual. They are almost all different purpose, and none are clustered. I have a distributed LAMP stack, a few application servers, some build servers, a few KVM hosts. They are CentOS 6.3 mostly with a few Ubuntu (unfortunately). I don't have the resources to setup a staging environment where I can have duplicates of my machines and test updates before rolling them out. I am taking file backups. What I want to know is how you are approaching backing up your Linux systems. I assume you don't just do yum update, but then how are you choosing the packages worthy of updating? When (if ever) are you updating the kernel, etc.. How do you test updates without a staging environment? Snapshot and hope for the best?

• MySQL Locking Up

  I've got a innodb table that gets a lot of reads and almost no writes (like, 1 write for every 400,000 reads approx). I'm running into a pretty big problem though when I do INSERT into the table. MySQL completely locks up. It uses 100% cpu, and every single other table (in other databases even) have their statuses set to "Locked" until the INSERT is done. This is a big problem because MySQL stays locked up for up to 4 minutes. I'm using version 5.1.47 (rpm from mysql.com). Any ideas?

• How do you initialize networking on a new Xen guest VM?

  We have a Citrix XenServer setup, and while I personally lean more towards Dev than Ops, I've got an issue that's been bugging me. When you provision a new (Linux/Ubuntu) guest, how do you get it to have the correct IP-address? I'd want my application servers to exist in the range of 10.20.0.0/24, preferably being .1, .2, etc, so I can keep my sanity. I guess that the actual IP-address is something set in Linux itself, and Xen can't touch that, but then what's the best practice for getting it done? If you set up DHCP, don't you just move the problem to getting the adapters the "correct" MAC-addresses? Do you just have to hardcode a large table of MAC-addresses to IP-addresses, and then provision new guests always with the correct MAC-address on the virtual ethernet adapter? What we currently do is have an image of a "app server" that we boot up a new instance of, and then finalize it (with a script) that (among other things) modifies the /etc/networking/interface file to give it the correct IP. But that feels dirty to me, and I feel like surely there must a better way. Please enlighten me?

  hello the point is, if i'm logged in (and as almost every windows user, i've got an admin-account), and someone comes across my not locked pc, it is possible to change my password the pro-way through using: net user Admin %NEW_PASSWD% what can i do to prevent that, besides not being logged in as admin. i once saw a way, where the 'net user' command was substituted by a .bat file. so if you call 'net user Admin ...', it runs this .bat-file instead, which locks the notebook immediately. problem is, i honestly don't know how i could let windows substitute eg net.exe with a .bat-file. (too little windows knowledge) do you know any way how to do it? i'd appreciate it.

• Java sound doesn't work under Linux

  I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a .wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions. Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms! Can somebody help me figure out what's wrong?

• How can I turn off font-antialiasing only for gnome-terminal, but not for other applications?

  I'm running GNOME (gnome-session under xmonad). I want to turn off antialiasing (i.e. use monochrome mode) for fonts in gnome-terminal. But I want to retain antialiasing for other applications, like Firefox. Is this possible? Antialiasing is great and almost necessary for using Firefox or Chrome. But it makes the fonts in gnome-terminal blurry at sizes around 12 or smaller. Otherwise, I'll just have to use xterm, which seems not to anti-alias its fonts under any circumstances.

• laptop suddenly became very slow

  I have a compaq laptop. And I've been using it 2 years now. Then this day, it suddenly became very slow. It almost took 5 minutes from turning on to the log on screen. I click my username and it took 3 minutes to show the desktop. I click on my computer then properties to see if it is still showing 2 Ghz for the Core 2 duo processor. And 2gb for the memory. It took 10 minutes for all the information to show up. And its still 2gb and 2Ghz. So I may conclude that this is not a problem in memory or cpu. Its still running perfectly last night. And I have not seen signs of it failing. Things I already tried: Rebooting Shutdown then turn on again So how do I determine what causes this problem? How do I fix it?

• Intermittent USB 3.0 access - How do I troubleshoot?

  I've got a WD Passport hard disk with "superspeed" USB 3.0 support. When I use my USB 3.0 flash drive (this is a Lenovo X220 laptop), USB 3.0 consistently works. But when I use the passport drive, almost without fail the connection drops to USB 2.0. Touching the cable seems to immediately trigger the problem, but it seems to happen on its own though. I've got another cable on order right now... but is it likely the cable's the issue here? Is there anything else I can check?

  I want to build a file server to make users able to upload and download mostly multimedia, but also common files. Right now I have an Arch installation with vsftpd and I'm about to install miniDLNA for multimedia sharing. The only problem is that FTP doesn't seem to fit my needs, because almost always makes the users need a client such as FileZilla to make the server friendly. I have been looking for a web frontend for vsftp but apart from management interfaces there's nothing. I need a frontend accessible from a browser through which users can navigate throught the folders in an easier and more elegant way than the plain FTP display that browsers make by default. It should be able to let users upload files and, as an awesome extra, let them play the multimedia directly on the browser. For this, I am willing to dump FTP if needed, I've heard about HTTP File Servers but don't know too much about it. I could code everything myself, but there's gotta be something out there already.

  I left my computer off for a couple of weeks and since my Windows 7 updates have been installed I have managed to gather a malware virus. It tries to redirect me on almost all websites I go to. I have read many ways to solving this issue manually, but it seems difficult and I dont want to delete any important files by mistake. All the instructions I have read seem complicated and generic all leading to a company that say they can help remove it. Is it their scam?? • Understanding ESXi and Memory Usage

  Hi, I am currently testing VMWare ESXi on a test machine. My host machine has 4gigs of ram. I have three guests and each is assigned a memory limit of 1 GB (and only 512 MB reserved). The host summary screen shows a memory capacity of 4082.55 MB and a usage of 2828 MB with two guests running. This seems to make sense, two gigs for each VM plus an overhead for the host. 800MB seems high but that is still reasonable. But on the Resource Allocation Screen I see a memory capacity of 2356 MB and an available capacity of 596 MB. Under the configuration tab, memory link I see a physical total of 4082.5 MB, System of 531.5 MB and VM of 3551.0 MB. I have only allocated my VMs for a gig each, and with two VMs running they are taking up almost two times the amount of ram allocated. Why is this, and why does the Resource Allocation screen short change me so much?

  I have a small web site and would like to add a 'contact us' form and a 'feedback' form. i would like the forms to satisfy the following: 1- be modern looking (with beautiful css effects) 2- the form fields are validated properly and 'inline'. What I mean is once a user skips a required field or enters an email address incorrectly some kind of tooltip or icon is displayed to ask him to cerrect the error (as opposed to a message box that appears after the user clicks 'submit') 3- once the submit button is clicked the form contents are emailed to me. 4- the whole thing can be setup by a noob like myself. 5- no ads on the form I have been searching for at least 5 days for a solution but I can't seem to find anything the would satisfy the above 5 conditions. I don't mind paying for a solution as long as it is hosted on my site and it is a one off payment and not a monthly payment. So far my search has lead me to the following: 1 wufoo. The good: the generated forms seem to look okay but not the best there is. The bad: the free service is limited to 100 submissions. ads on the form. it is not hosted on my server. Paid service requires monthly payments 2- emailmeform: almost same as above except the generated form looks old. They do have an offer where you pay only $4 to get the form and set it up on your own site but that doesn't solve the fact that the forms look old. 3- formAssembly: same as above with minor variations (the generated form looks better) 4- formchamp, formthis, kontaktr,... And other similar online services: the same problem. either the form generated looks outdated or require monthly payments or they put ads...they don't satisfy my conditions. 5- coffeecup form builder. a desktop software. The problem is the generated forms look too old and use flash. 6- simfatic. Another software. Much better than coffeecup. almost satisfies my conditions but the forms not as good as I like. 7- many, many php scripts or html templates that look so outdated or fail when tested (probably because they are too old). Seriously guys, how hard is this. At least 90%+ of website contain at least a 'contact us' form. Why aren't there better solutions? if there is I can't seem to find them. And this is a perfect example of what I mean by 'inline' validation. the only problem: there is no script to handle sending the mail. Even if I find one, I don't know how to modify it for my needs. If nothing exists then at least a: 1- form template (html) that looks nice and can easily be modified 2- a validation script that does 'inline' validation like the example above (or similar to it) and can be easily implemented by a noob like me to work with the html form. 3- a php script that will handle sending the email and can be easily implemented (all three working in harmony). I hope there is a complete solution but am I asking for too much? Pretty please...help...

• rsync doesn't use delta transfer on first run

  I'm trying to synchronize a large local directory (with a batch file using rsync 3.0.7 on Cygwin, Windows 7 x64, 30k files, 200gb size) to a remote server (Debian x64 with kernel 2.6, rsyncd 3.0.7) over a slow internet connection (90kbyte/s upload). I know almost all files are identical and I verified that using md5sum locally and remotely. However when executing rsync from my local machine every file gets transferred completely for the first time. When I terminate the batch file after a few transfers and run it again then the already transferred files are skipped. But as soon as it gets to a file not yet transferred it uploads the file as a whole again instead of noticing that the checksum is the same locally and remotely. • Analyse frequencies of date ranges in Google Spreadsheet

  I have a Google Spreadsheet where I would like to compute occurrences of date ranges. As you can see in my sheet, there is a column date_utc+1 which contains almost random date data. What I would like to do is put the date values into bins of 6 hours each, i.e., 12/5/2012 23:57:04 until 12/6/2012 0:03:17 would be in the first bin, 12/6/2012 11:20:53 until 12/6/2012 17:17:07 in the second bin, and so forth. Then, I would like to count the occurrence of those bins, such as bin_from bin_to freq ----------------------------------------------- 12/5/2012 23:57:04 12/6/2012 0:03:17 2 12/6/2012 11:20:53 12/6/2012 17:17:07 19 ... ... ... Hope it is clear what I mean. Partial hints are very welcome as well since I am pretty new to spreadsheeting.

• Windows 7: How to prevent Windows from caching my desktop wallpaper

  I have a service running that renders a changing wallpaper every 5 minutes or so, and replaces the current image file with the new one automatically (That is to say, new image but same filename). On Linux, the change is detected almost automatically, and so I have the most current wallpaper. However, on my Windows 7 machine (Which syncs the image with my Linux machine over Dropbox), it appears to cache the wallpaper from the last time I manually set the wallpaper. The image never changes, even if I restart. Is there a way to make Windows detect the file change, or periodically refresh the wallpaper cache? I'd like to avoid third-party apps if at all possible.

• Any FTP clients for Mac OS X that support upload via temporary filename?

  Hi, does anybody know of a FTP client (for Mac OS X) that supports uploading to a temporary filename? When overwriting a file on the server, most FTP clients first empty the file and then proceed to upload new content. (Which is how FTP is supposed to work, so everything is fine.) However, what I would like to see is that the FTP client uploads content to a temporary file and once all the content is on the server, replaces original file. This is good feature, because existing file is upgraded almost instantaneously; otherwise, it would be "broken" while the upload is still in progress. On Windows, this feature is available in WinSCP, but I have not found any options for Mac, so far. Any recommendations?

• Feedback on available mid-to-enterprise level desktop backup solutions [closed]

  I am involved in the creation of a new backup solution to replace our current Retrospect setup, which has become a significant time sink to administer. We have almost 200 desktop and some laptop clients, both Windows and OS X. We're only interested in products oriented around disk-to-disk, and would be integrate well with our current set of nine NAS devices as target storage. I'd just like some feedback from anyone out there, as it's sometimes difficult otherwise to find objective reviews of software at this level. Both data and time are important enough that we need a reliable solution which won't be prone to self-destruction as often as Retrospect. Bonus points for de-duplication, which might help squeeze more service time out of our NAS setup in terms of capacity. Currently considering Commvault and Netbackup. Many other products I've seen don't have an OSX client. Any thoughts?

• Difficulty racking Proliant G8's

  We're an all Proliant shop with around 50 servers, mostly DL360s and DL380, from G5's through G7's. We just got our first two G8's in and went to rack them. We were stunned to find out that the new cable management arms protrude almost 1 inch deeper into the rack then previous iterations of the Proliant line. Unfortunately that causes them to occupy the same space as the PDU's in our APC racks. In a non-densely populated section of rack that's no biggie, but in a densely populated section it's impossible to get the cable arm into place without dislodging another machine's power. Has anyone else run into this? Obviously racking machines without cable management arms is not an option. I supposed we could reconfigure our racks but that's a nightmare.

• How long does badblocks take on a 1TB drive?

  I'm running badblocks (or rather "e2fsck -c") on a 1TB drive and if the progress indicator is any indication (no pun intended), it's going to take almost forever to complete. Right now it says 0.01% done, 30:20 elapsed which would mean the thing would take 17 weeks or so to complete, which seems rather excessive in my book. Is that a normal amount of time for such a check to take or it simply that my suspicions are correct in that the drive is failing, thus causing the check to take only slightly shorter than eternity? I found this question here, but that pertains to the amount of passes done.

• Compilation of Etherpad fails in an OpenVZ VE

  Hi everyone. I’m almost giving up, this will be my last try: I try to compile Etherpad on my OpenVZ server. It’s running a Debian 5.0 as the host system, in the VE I’ve got Ubuntu 10.04. I installed Etherpad in this VE with the instructions from the official Ubuntu Wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Etherpad. Everything runs fine until it comes to compilation. After calling bin/build.sh as described in the wiki the first steps are running fine. But then I’m running into a memory error: java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "cp": java.io.IOException: error=12, Cannot allocate memory Well, I understand the error message but don’t see the cause. The command free tells me that there’s plenty memory left in this VE: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2415236 1140872 1274364 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1140872 1274364 Swap: 0 0 0 Beautiful. But even repeating the compilation process doesn’t bring me any further. Any help would be appreciated.
