  • Handling timeout in network application

    How can I handle timeouts in a network application. I'm implementing a provisioning system on a Linux server, the code is huge so I'm going to put the algorithm, it works as like this Read provisioning commands from file Send it to another server using TCP Save the request in hash. Receive the response then if successful response received then remove request from hash if failed response received then retry the message The problem I'm in now is when the program didn't receive the response for a timeout reason then the request will be waiting for a response forever and won't be retried. And please note that I'll be sending hundreds of commands and I have to monitor the timeout commands for all of them. I tried to use timer but that didn't help because I'll end up with so many waiting timers and I'm not sure if this is a good way of doing this. The question is how can I save the message in some data structure and check to remove or retry it later when there is no response from the other end? Please note that I'm willing to change the algorithm to anything you suggest that could deal with the timeouts.

We have run into customers opting to store a document folder path as a document metadata field. They have their reasons, half of the ECM community will agree with them, and the other half would raise an eye brow. In the end, they are getting creative to achieve their document management goals. The below steps outlines how to create a Global Rule that would store a document’s folder path in a custom metadata field: Create a Global Rule via Configuration Manager > Rules Tab > Add Then check “Is global rule with priority”. Then check “Use rule activation condition”.   • IIS logs show sc-win32-status=64 but only through some networks

    I have an ASP.NET application running on a client server (W2k3, IIS6, .NET 2.0). FWIW, this is a Test instance, it hasn't been moved into Production yet. So it is not running under SSL, load balancing, etc. When I access one of the pages on their server from our office, the page gets hit once. Inspecting the IIS logs (c:WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1) show a GET for that page, then I push a button on the page and the log file shows a POST. This seems to be working fine so far. Now when I remote into the client's network and access the page from one of their local machines, the log file shows a GET, then I push the button on the page and the log shows two POSTs at the same second. The first one shows status (sc-status, sc-substatus, sc-win32-status) 200 0 64, the second shows 200 0 0. In the log file, both POSTs are identical. The database performs an operation for the first request, then the second request detects that a duplicate operation is being performed and throws an error message. The users think their operation failed, but it actually succeeded. The error description of sc-win32-status 64 is: "The specified network name is no longer available." This leads me to believe, given that both POST requests show an HTTP status of 200, that the server is successful in serving the request, but the client is never notified and resubmits the request. How can I troubleshoot this? Any ideas what could be causing this behavior on their internal network only? I should mention, this is happening at two separate client sites, but does not happen at six of our other client sites, or in our office, or connecting to any of our eight clients over the web. What could be making this reproducible 100% of the time on their local network but 0% of the time anywhere else? Update: I found a very small number of the duplicated POST requests had sc-win32-status of 995 instead of 64 as originally reported. The error description of sc-win32-status=995 is: "The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request." This doesn't make any sense (considering I have full access to the code). I still don't understand how or why this issue is occurring, but the new error code leads me to believe it may not be a network issue after all and I am now investigating the possibility of a random code bug.

  • Java Script – Content delivery networks (CDN) can bit you in the butt.

    As much as I love the new CDN’s that Google, Microsoft and a few others have publically released, there are some strong gotchas that could come up and bite you in the ass if you’re not careful. But before we jump into that, for those that are not 100% sure what a CDN is (besides Canadian).   Content Delivery Network. A way of distributing your static content across various servers in different physical locations.  Because this static content is stored on many servers around the world, whenever a user needs to access this content, they are given the closest server to their location for this data. Already you can probably see the immediate bonuses to a system like this: Lower bandwidth Even small script files downloaded thousands of times will start to take a noticeable hit on your bandwidth meter. Less connections/hits to your web server which gives better latency If you manage many servers, you don’t need to manually update each server with scripts. A user will download a script for each website they visit. If a user is redirected to many domains/sub-domains within your web site, they might download many copies of the same file. When a system sees multiple requests from the same  domain, they will ignore the download   Those are just a handful of the many bonuses a CDN will give you. And for the average website, a CDN is great choice. Check out the following CDN links for their solutions: Google AJAX Library: http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxlibs/ Microsoft Ajax library: http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/cdn.ashx The Gotcha There is always a catch. Here are some issues I found with using CDN’s that hopefully can help you make your decision. HTTP / HTTPS If you are running a website behind SSL, make sure that when you reference your CDN data that you use https:// vs. http://. If you forget this users will get a very nice message telling them that their secure connection is trying to access unsecure data. For a developer this is fairly simple, but general users will get a bit anxious when seeing this. Trusted Sites Internet Explorer has this really nifty feature that allows users to specify what sites they trust, and by some defaults IE7 only allows trusted sites to be viewed.  No problem, they set your website as trusted. But what about your CDN? If a user sets your websites to trusted, but not the CDN, they will not download those static files. This has the potential to totally break your web site. Pedantic Network Admins This alone is sometimes the killer of projects. However, always be careful when you are going to use a CDN for a professional project. If a network / security admin sees that you’re referencing an outside source, or that a call from a website might hit an outside domain.. panties will be bunched, emails will be spewed out and well, no one wants that.

    I am starting to think I simply need to accept a small loss and sell my new ASUS K73E. Because I really don't enjoy computing when I have to deal with Windough$ and this windows 7 64 bit on my new ASUS is even worse than the old machines with XP. I have written to ASUS and they simply say "We don't support Linux" and while Ralink's website says they do support Linux I can't get anyone to tell me what model Ralink card might be in my machine. Is anyone out there who might be able to give me some useful advice????   • Serving static content from cookie less domain and mod_deflate

    I have two domain. One domain with my main website and the other with js/css/etc.. files, static content. mod_deflate is enabled for both domains, but when i run ySlow in FireFox it says none of my static content is compressed. When i bring back the js or css file to my normal domain it gets compressed right. Only when its served from the other domain is it not compressed. Do i have to do some more configuration for this to work? I am using this line in my .htaccess file AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript text/css text/html text/xml text/plain application/x-httpd-php I tried to but the line in my httpd.conf file but it gives me the same results. PS. If this is more of a serverfault question i am sorry for this. But i see a lot of questions here concerning mod_deflate and ySlow

  • How to make xxx.one.com load content from yyy.two.com

    Hello, I'm currently in need to have xxx.one.com load the content of yyy.two.com. That means that when someone will enter xxx.one.com they'll actually see the content of yyy.two.com (URL in the browser won't change and will remain xxx.one.com). The domains are hosted on separate hosting company. yyy.two.com is on a cPanel and xxx.one.com is on an unknown hosting plan, though I can get its details. yyy.two.com have the same IP of www.two.com and this cannot be changed (as the hosting company told me). Any ideas on how do I tackle this issue? Thanks, Roy

    Hi There, I have a Sharepoint 2007 web farm installation with two site collections, one is a blank site and the other is a migrated Sharepoint 2003 site collection. I want to move some specific content from the migrated 2003 collection to the 2007 collection, however I also want to change the path of where it exists, an example is that in the migrated 2003 collection HR is under Admin HR, in the 2007 collection I want HR to appear before Admin. I've looked around but haven't found a lot of information regarding how to move specific content between sites, any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

  • make IIS 7.5 cache static content files over diferent pages

    On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible?   • UDP multicast streaming of media content over WIFI

    I am using vlc to stream media content over wireless network in scenario like this (from content streamer to stream receiver client): The bandwidth of wireless network is 54 Mb/s and UDP stream's required bandwidth is only 4 Mb/s; however there is trouble in receiving media stream and quality of playing specifically in multicast mode; means I can play the stream but it has jitter and does not play smoothly. In uni-cast I can stream up to 5 media streams correctly, but in multicast mode there is problem with streaming just one media! However when I stream from client some multicast streams; the wifi access-point can receive data correctly and I can see the video in "udp streamer" side correctly even when number of multicast streams increases to 9; But as you see I want to stream from streaming server and receive media in client size. Is this a typical problem of streaming real-time contents over wireless networks? Is it necessary to change configurations of my WIFI switch or it is just a software trouble? thank you

    If I understand this correctly, I have two options for static files: Use a CDN and throw all my static files on it. Use a separate domain just to store the static files so users can download it simultaneously. So I assume it is either one to choose or do i need a separate domain then use a CDN to get files from that domain? Because I assume even if I have a CDN I still need to have a local copy of the static content somewhere either on my main site or a static content site like static.domain.com?

    What is the best way to backup data on content servers? For example, I have 15 servers that just have content, no applications running on it. Each server has a 250 GB hard drive. So, it's a pretty big amount of data. All the data have external access (via HTTP). So, the question is: what methodology is best in my case? The most useful method I know is cross-backup: when each server contains its own data and backup of one other server. But, there is significant reduction in total capacity. RAID?

    Hi Folks, Problem when i manually set the HTTP Status of my Response stream to .. say 404 or 503, IIS renders up the stock IIS content/view, instead of my custom view. When I do this with the Web Development Server (aka. Casinni), it works correctly (ie. my content is displayed and the response.statuscode == my entered data. Is there anyway I can override this behaviour?   • Where is the actual content in a TCP segment

    When I email something or download a program, or do anything else over a network, where in the segment is the actual content? If I am emailing a 20KB word document, and the maximum data field size in a segment is 1500 bytes, does that mean it takes about 14 segments to mail my document wherever it is going? I get, I think, the OSI model and I have a decent grasp of the IP protocol. I think I understand the concept of header wrapping of each successive layer in the protocol stack. What I can't get a definitive answer to is where does the actual content go in a TCP segment? Is that the datagram? Maybe the fact I am asking proves I have no clue... Many thanks.

I want to set some kind of handler or use a mod to return HTTP/1.1 206 when the extension of the file requested is .mp4 so it can do video seeking, my web server is already returning some headers to do seeking, but it doesn't work. Is this possible?     I am attempting to use the IHS 7.0/apache 2.2 SetEnvIf directive to set the filename of a downloaded file based on a url parameter. I think I am pretty close, however if there is a space (encoded or otherwise) in the filename - it fails. example url: http://site.com/path/to/filename.ext/file-title=Nice File Name.ext?file-type=foo apache config: SetEnvIf Request_URI "^.*file-title\=(.*)\??.*$" FILENAME=$1 Header unset "Content-Disposition" Header add "Content-Disposition" "attachment; filename=%{FILENAME}e" UnsetEnv FILENAME An application will specify what is now showing up as "Nice File Title.ext" in the example. This all works great if there are no spaces, however - if there is a space the filename to download will just show up as "Nice". There may or may not be a second set of parameters in the query string (?file-type, etc)

  • SharePoint 2010 Search - not search additional content sources

    I've got SP 2010 crawling a secondary intranet system that we'll run in parallel as part of a long running migration to SharePoint when it releases. Whilst it's crawling the pages without problem I can't see how to get the results to appear as part of the Quick Search results if the user does a search from the little search dialog box on the home page. Searches completed within a My Sites pages lists results from port the SharePoint installation and the external content source. Searches from the main search dialog only list results of SharePoint items. I tried adding the drop down option to select the site to search but this list only includes the name of the current site and doesn't offer an 'All Sites' scope option which I think would include the content. What am I doing wrong?

    Are there any ad-placing services that don't mind that the page is nothing but a page of ads? Someone else with a .cn tld is pointing to my IP address. I currently have that site on its own name based virtual host that responds to every request with a 403, but I figure if I am paying for the incoming bandwidth, I might as well try to make some money off it. I don't want to actually create any content for this site, which prevents me from using adsense. My only requirements are that it is free for me to sign up and that they don't mind the lack of content.

    On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible?     I am using vlc to stream media content over wireless network in scenario like this (from content streamer to stream receiver client): The bandwidth of wireless network is 54 Mb/s and UDP stream's required bandwidth is only 4 Mb/s; however there is trouble in receiving media stream and quality of playing specifically in multicast mode; means I can play the stream but it has jitter and does not play smoothly. In uni-cast I can stream up to 5 media streams correctly, but in multicast mode there is problem with streaming just one media! However when I stream from client some multicast streams; the wifi access-point can receive data correctly and I can see the video in "udp streamer" side correctly even when number of multicast streams increases to 9; But as you see I want to stream from streaming server and receive media in client size. Is this a typical problem of streaming real-time contents over wireless networks? Is it necessary to change configurations of my WIFI switch or it is just a software trouble? thank you

  • Encrypted TrueCrypt volume in file with decoy content?

    I've been reading about the encryption features of TrueCrypt, including the feature to have an encrypted volume inside a file with any name. For example, I can create an encrypted volume inside a file named music.mp3. However, the file won't really play when I try to open it in a music player. Is there a way to add "decoy" content to music.mp3 so that someone who doesn't know its got encrypted content can double click on it and music will play? Obviously it doesn't have to be music, but also images, decoy test document, etc. etc.
