  I am really new to using linux and have just formatted my centos 5.2 vps and am trying to install links by using the command yum install links. • Primary IDE Channel: Ultra DMA Mode 5 >> PIO Mode

  Hi, my netbook was having huge audio lag and just abnormally slow processing. After doing some searching on the internet, I found out that I needed to uninstall/reinstall the Primary IDE Channel found under the IDE controller section in the Device Manager. I would then set the Transfer Mode to DMA if available and everything would be great. For a period of time, I would see that "Ultra DMA Mode 5" was the current transfer mode, but every so often, it'd revert back to "PIO Mode", which is when it's really laggy. What can I do to prevent the Primary IDE Channel to revert from Ultra DMA Mode to PIO Mode? Also, my netbook has BSODed a few times when it is in PIO Mode, without any real explanation. Only difference is that I have upgraded to 2.0 GB of DDR2 RAM. EDIT: For all who are looking for an answer to this problem, click the link in Kythos's answer and look at number 6 (Re-enable DMA using the Registry Editor). This always works for me now. If on reboot, you seem to only have a black screen after XP is loading, just wait... it is still loading and will show signs of life after 2-3 minutes.

• VMWare ESXi 4.1- 5.1 installation hang

  I'm well aware that I'm trying to install VMWare ESXi 5.1 on hardware that's not on the HCL. I can't find my motherboard on the ultimatewhitebox site as well. I acknowledge these issues in advance. What I'm trying to find is someway to access the logs during installation or see a console or log file to see where the installation is hanging at and remove a device or change a setting in the BIOS. The installation is hanging, not getting a purple screen of death. I thought by hitting ALT+F10 or F12 (or some key combination as such) would enable me to see the console but no such luck. I haven't been able to find much within the ESXi online documentation either. Here's the parts I'm using: AMD Phenom II x3 700 MSI 890FXA-GD70 (IOMMU capable) 16GB DDR3 1333 RAM (2x8GB DIMMs) Intel Pro 1000 (Dual-GbE) PCIe x4 (removed during installation) LSI 9211-8i PCIe (removed during installation) LSI 9201-16i PCIe (removed during installation) Matrox video card BIOS settings: IOMMU is enabled (during 5.1 IOMMU successfully loads) AHCI is enabled (hangs for 4.1) Both onboard Realtek NICs are disabled For ESXi 5.1, the installation hangs after vmkapi_v2_0_0_0 is loaded. For ESXi 5.0, it hangs when loading the vmklinux_9 module. For ESXi 4.1 U3, the installation hangs during loading of ahci module. Again, I'm looking for some way to view a console (service console?) or log file during or after an installation attempt to see what verbose error messages or logging can lead me to solving this problem.

When I ran rpmbuild, the headers weren't present. • Boot ISO image from GRUB4DOS on EFI machines

  I failed with loading ISO image (non-distro) from GRUB2 from USB stick, but found the way how I can boot the GRUB4DOS and then load the image from there. However, it doesn't work all the time and the questions is WHY it doesn't? Environment and loading process: We need to have EFI machine, USB stick, booting ISO, GRUB2 and GRUB4DOS. Last 3 on USB stick. Boot: USB - EFI loader - GRUB2 - GRUB4DOS - ISO image Configuration files To boot GRUB4DOS I use this from grub.cfg: menuentry "image.iso" { linux /syslinux/grub.exe --config-file="/menu.lst" } My menu.lst is here: timeout 20 default 0 title image.iso find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd //image.iso map --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0 //image.iso (hd32) map --hook chainloader (hd32) This works perfectly with Legacy machines. However, when I come to GRUB4DOS, I don't see the menu with image.iso, I see only GRUB command line. That means that my menu.lst didn't load. Why is it like this? Background and ideas I have an idea that GRUB4DOS doesn't recognize my USB stick as a device. I tried the command find and got (hd0,0), (hd0,1), (hd0,2), (rd). When I tried to set root to any of these devices I don't see fat file system, how it was with Legacy machines. The root device is (hd0,0), which has ntfs file system which should be partition with Windows. EFI machines support only GRUB2, so I can't boot GRUB4DOS straight away. Please, don't suggest anything like this, because my image doesn't have kernel.   I'm trying to use my Synology DS212 NAS box also act as VPN gateway to my companies VPN. Sadly, they only use Cisco ASA and to complicate stuff even further, we've got to use personal certificates (which is of course more secure, but more complicate to get going…). So I compiled OpenConnect v4.06 from http://www.infradead.org/openconnect/. • 0x0000007b WinXP in VirtualBox with no Admin access on source drive

  I have a physical drive with an installation of WinXP-32 which I have made a clone of using SysInternals disk2vhd. I have no admin rights on this installation. I have tried to boot this VHD in VirtualBox, however it blue screens on 0x0000007b. I have researched this and apparently the cause is that Windows doesn't like the IDE controller changing. I have tried all the available controllers in VirtualBox, but they all produce the same result. There is a Microsoft KB article which describes a method involving loading a .reg file and extracting some sys files from a CAB. This method apparently works well for many people with this problem, however it will not work for me as I don't have admin rights on the WinXP installation. Is there anything I can do in this case? Is there any way of loading the .reg file outside the OS? or perhaps doing a repair using the WinXP CD? Even though I have no admin rights on the source drive installation of Windows, I do obviously have full access to the file system directly on the drive and also in the VHD itself.

• Broken UAC, cant edit File/folders or change settings in user account

  It appears that UAC is broken cant move/delete some file/folders, when asked to use administrative right (and say yes) it shows the loading bar and then nothings gets moved/deleted, no error whatsoever opened control panel, user account and when i click on any option with the Shield (administrative rights) the mouse changes to loading and thengo back to normal, not opening any menu or showing any error Already done a sfc /scannow , no errors found Already used Microsoft's Fix it, reclycle bin broken and repaired, still the same error Used microsoftaccounts tool , this are the errors i got: Problem with microsoft account policy... <- this is the problem (didint fix) Trust this PC <- loop of redirections, cant get to trust this pc (only one with w8) Problems witht sytem registration : i think it is because of the soft system reset Some setting have sync turned off : i never configured anything to sync Rootcauses found and created logs : would like to know where the logs are saved... had to use a ".reg" file to change uac setting to never notify, thinking it would fix this, no, it stoped asking though, i can still open a cmd with Administrative rights, but cant access to UAC settings Accesed Administrator account (net user administrator /active:yes)and even with that account could change any settings so there it is, dont know what else to do in the moment (this pc broke with 8.1 update and was restored to factory configuration, it broke several drivers and kept most of the registry entries, i cant find the cause of this problem. other info: i tried to delete a file in a program folder and couldnt, downloaded unlocker to check first if it was permissions but no, it showed me a msg telling me that there wasnt any error, and if i would like to delete it, clicked on yes, and it did delete it, what amuses me is that i cant without this tool, not even using the feature that takes over ownership Edit: wow, in a not crappy pc chkdsk is fast, completed with no errors found : /

• I can't download or stream for more then 3 sec, and then the conection activity just dies

  Just got a new internet connection installed at my sisters place, but it randomly just stops working. At first it was only affecting flash videos. they would randomly just stop buffering. I did a lot of research on this and found that there can be many things that cause this exact trouble. I then tried IE and some flash would stream fine, but still random deaths. So I told my brother in law to reset the router and modem and that fixed the problem for them but not my laptop. I then started trying to fix the flash problem only to fined that downloads of any kind were affected. Now it is so bad that 50% of page loads will never finish because the connection drops to 0% usage with in a split sec. I can't get flash reinstalled because the installer is trying to download but the download dies at 8% I tried up loading a large file by FTP to a web server with no troubles. Yet any activity on my end that takes longer then about 1 sec to finish, just never finishes I can watch the network log in the taskmanager and it spikes for ruffly one sec then drops back to zero and when I go back to the web page it says it is still loading and no matter how long I let it sit it never does any thing more till I reload then it will again create a very short spike of activity on the connection and then drop to zero. Also if I start a download and it does drop off I can restart the download where it left off and get up to 100Kb/s for around the same one sec then it drops to around 14Kb/s then zero a sec latter... I am running Win 7 home prem x64 with FF11 and IE8 I have simply tried every thing I can short of calling up the ISP which very likely will get me no where fast. any advice on what step to take to figure this out would be nice. I am not even sure it is not just an ISP problem. (at least I should be able to get flash reinstalled once I get back home)

• Unusual Caching Issue with IE 7/8 and IIS 7

  We recently moved a site into production running Server 2008 x64 and IIS 7. The ASP.NET pages apparently load just fine, but when it comes to IE 7 and 8, a weird caching issue has cropped up with the CSS and JavaScript files on the page. On a very sporadic schedule, IE does not get all the files necessary to compose the page (i.e. CSS and JS files). When I manually go to the missing files from the address bar, they come back from local cache as empty. I F5 these source files and magically they come down properly. I refresh the site after loading a few files and the cache seems to hold. This problem has only been reproduced (again, sporadically) on IE 7 and 8 running XP. Chrome and Firefox appear to be immune. We have set IIS to use server-side kernel caching for CSS, JS and images. We also have set to expire content for the App_Themes and Scripts directories to expire immediately. One initial thought it was a SWF loading an FLV on page load. These fixes have not remedied the problem. We had no problems on our staging server which is using Server 2003 and IIS 6. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. P.S.   Installed opscenterd on the separate node outside of the cluster, but within firewall ( aws security group ). Tested all possible ports between agents and opcenter server. • some windows 8 metro (modern UI) apps don't open, but live tiles DO work

  Some of my default windows 8 metro (modern UI) apps don't work properly, the apps are the Weather and the News apps. when I open them, I only get the loading screen, that is, the big colorful screen with the logo in the center, and the "loading" spinning dots. They just keep like that forever and never actually open. There are no error messages or anything. The strange this is that the live tiles for those apps DO work and show current information. current weather for my location (saved before they started failing) and current news. Both apps did work well in the past, and every other default windows 8 app I've tried work well (both live tiles and the app itself). Every other non-default apps that I've downloaded still work correctly, so the problem so far is only with those two apps. (weather and news). I really don't know since when exactly they started to fail because I really don't use them (or any metro app) that often, so I can't recall if I did something like installing some other app, either metro or regular, or messed with some drivers, etc. they simply don't open now, but they DID work before. any ideas?

• Why do I often have to refresh pages I navigate to once for them (or content in them) to load?

  I have noticed a bizarre pattern when using my PC, that when I open a link to a website, it often will often take a very long time to load, or time out. Sometimes content on the website will be drawn, but again, it seems to get "stuck" for an unusual amount of time before finishing. Most affected is Youtube; almost every time I navigate to a youtube video from another website such as Google, the video will not begin playing, but will instead just display the player controls with a black screen where the video should be and the buffering symbol, usually before displaying an error such as "The video failed to load". The unusual part of this problem is that whenever this happens, refreshing the page always causes it to load almost immediately the second time around, without any problems. Note that I'm not talking about how some browsers will dump whatever has been cached to the "pallet" briefly when the page is refreshed or loading stopped; but that the second time loading the website being faster. I have done my best to rule out some of the obvious causes: My Windows 7 desktop computer is the only device that seems to be affected. I use Firefox on it (latest version, flash updated, etc). My connection has more than enough bandwidth (30 megabits down, 4 up), and I've even tried QoSing all other devices to make sure this isn't happening due to usage spikes. Wireshark is not showing any clearly unusual network activity (i.e frequently dropped packets).

• Saving a file in a CSV type in Excel always removes the BOM

  I've been trying to find a reasonable solution/explanation (unsuccessfully) to find out why Excel defaults to removing the BOM when saving a file to the CSV type. Please forgive me if you find this a duplicate of this question. This handles reading CSV files with non-ASCII encoding, but it doesn't cover saving the file back out (which is where the biggest issue lies). Here is my current situation (which I'm going to gather is common among localized software dealing with Unicode characters and a CSV format): We export data to a CSV format using UTF-16LE, ensuring the BOM is set (0xFFFE). We validate after the file is generated with a Hex editor to ensure it was set correctly. Open the file in Excel (for this example we're exporting Japanese characters) and witness that Excel handles loading the file with the correct encoding. Attempts to save this file will prompt you with a warning message indicating that the file may contain features that may not be compatible with Unicode encoding, but asks if you'd like to save anyway. If you select the Save As dialog, it will immediately ask you to save the file as "Unicode Text" rather than CSV. If you select the "CSV" extension and save the file it removes the BOM (obviously along with all the Japanese characters). Why would this happen? Is there a solution to this problem, or is this a known 'bug'/limitation of Excel? Additionally (as a side issue) it appears that Excel, when loading UTF-16LE encoded CSV files, only uses TAB delimiters. Again, is this another known 'bug'/limitation of Excel?

• CentOs 6.3 can't install Git

  I am trying to install git on an OpenVZ container using the CentOs 6.3 precreated template. • Slow boot for OS and external devices

  I have been having this problem intermittently but as of yesterday, it has become more consistent. It originally started when I rebooted my PC at home and the OS (Windows 8) sat in a loop appearing to do nothing while loading. I figured since this was a new installation, that something may have just become corrupted and I decided to reinstall. So I tried to boot off of the thumb drive which had the installation iso and encountered pretty much the same issue. Same with the DVD drive. So, I rebooted once again and left it to load the entire night just to see if it ever would and sure enough this morning, Windows had finally loaded. Authentication had the same roblem albeit not quite as long (took about 5 minutes to authenticate). However, once I was in, everything appeared to be working fine and as quick as normal with the exception of when I tried to scan the C drive for any errors, which ran unbearably slow (45 minutes and before I left for work and was not finished scanning a 64GB SSD drive). I mention that I have had this issue but never when loading the OS. Before it occurred when trying to install windows 7 from a different DVD drive than the one I have now. It took me about 3 hours to do it since I had to wait sometimes 30+ min for each step to finish processing. Does anyone have an idea as to what can cause this? I am assuming it is the motherboard since it is responsible for communication with all the devices I'm having issues with but I cannot find anyone else who has had a problem like this and don't want to drop more money on a MB if it isn't the problem. • RHEL 5.2 installing on ProLiant BL460c - hangs at 'now booting the kernel'

  As the title states, I have a problem. This server and the installation disc are also on the other side of the world to me so... So far, I have tried to start the install with the parameters: linux text noapic noacpi no=apic no=acpi which results in the same hang. I have also disabled a PCI ethernet adapter, I am uneasy about disabling the onboard ethernet adapter I do not know if ILO uses this. Anyone have any advice? Much appreciated. • SSD causing 100% CPU usage in Apache/PHP

  I wanted to increase the performance on my development laptop so I added an Intel 320 Series SSD as my primary drive. Everything is amazingly fast, as expected, except Apache/PHP. I develop Magento by using an Ubuntu 10.10 virtual machine. Information: Host OS: Win 7 Professional 64bit Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.10 32bit Processor: i7 Chipset QM55 SSD: Intel 320 Series 160gb 30% full HDD: Hitachi 320gb 50% full (in side bay using an adapter) Laptop: Lenovo T510 Using: Shared folders Apache Version: 2.2.16 PHP Version: 5.3.3-1 APC Version: 3.1.3p1 APC Memory: 128M Using tmpfs for cache, log, session directories in Magento In the VM running on the SSD (VM files and source files are on the same drive) loading a product page in the Admin takes on average 26.2 seconds and uses 100% CPU for nearly the entire time. In the VM running on the old HDD loading the same page takes on average 4.4 seconds. It mostly uses around 40-50% of the CPU while rendering the page. I have read this post: Performance issues when using SSD for a developer notebook (WAMP/LAMP stack)? It says to change some settings in the bios. I have turned any and all power management features off in the bios. I can't for the life of me understand why this would be happening.

• How can I display additional boot and shutdown information on the Windows 7 welcome screen?

  There is a small tweak, I believe it is a registry key, that allows to display additional information on the Welcome and Shutting down screens of Windows 7 (and most likely Vista, too). I have activated this tweak on one of my systems; unfortunately I forgot how I did it, and I can't seem to find the website that originally gave me that information. Usually, the Windows 7 welcome screen will just display "Welcome" when logging in. With the tweak activated, my Welcome screen gives status information such as "Loading user settings" or "Preparing desktop". When shutting down, the default screen simply says "Shutting down". With the tweak activated, it gives additional status information such as "Stopping Windows services". This appears the same way that Windows gives information when updates are installed or configured during the startup or shutdown procedure, and I find them quite helpful in getting a feel for what task takes how long during that process. The only setting I was able to find is the Boot log checkbox on the Boot tab of the msconfig application. However, this results in Windows displaying console logs of drivers it is loading, etc., instead of the animated Windows title. This is NOT the setting I am looking for. The "additional boot information" setting that I have activated on this system still displays the regular animated Windows logo, and only replaces the strings displayed on the blue Welcome and Shutdown screens. Could someone direct me to the registry key (or whatever setting) that is used to get this behaviour?
