• You need to format the disk in drive

  I was copying some files over to my external hard disk and suddenly a message popped up saying that some file was open and it could not continue.It asks me whether I want to cancel the operation and I said cancel(The other operation was continue.) After that whenever I plug in the usb into the same computer it does not work. It keeps saying that I need to format the disk to continue. Luckily for me it opened on another computer and am backing up all my data. But now I am wondering why exactly this happened. Is it that the hard disk is weak. Also as an addon I currently use http://www.dtidata.com/windowssurfacescanner/ program to check for bad sectors. Is this the recommended way or is there some other better more reliable way to check if my hard disk is failing? Also could the above problem be because the hard disk is failing? If not why does it happen.Even if the hard disk is interrupted in the middle of a read write cycle doesnt there exist error handling code to enable gracefull recovery?

• Problem importing pictures from a digital camera with Windows 7

  Hi, Since I'm using Windows 7 (Beta, then RC, now RTM), I have issues when I download pictures from my digital cameras. It happens with my 2 cameras: a Canon Powershot S2 IS and a Canon Ixus 80 IS. When I plug a camera (any of them) to a USB port and switch it on in Play mode, the Autoplay function of Windows 7 starts with this screen: I select "Import pictures and videos" to call the native Windows 7 tool. It searches a bit for pictures to download from the camera and starts the transfer. However, during the transfer, I often get errors like this one: If I use "Try again", it works fine the second time and the picture is retrieved correctly. It's very annoying when it happens 20 or 30 times in a 500-picture download. I cannot leave it running standalone, as I have to watch for the errors and click on "Try again". Any idea what is causing these errors? I tried changing the USB port (normally the cameras are connected via a USB hub but it happens also when I connect them directly to a MB USB port) and the USB cable, but no success. I also checked the SD card by connecting them with a card reader and running a ChkDsk on them but it found no errors on the cards. Update: No problem when I copy the pictures manually with the Windows Explorer. And no problem either when I access the card with a reader. The builtin import tool of Windows is convenient as it sorts the pictures automatically by date (1 folder per day). And this is the way I sort my pictures

• Why you need to tag your build servers in TFS

  At SSW we use gated check-in for all of our projects. The benefits are based on the number of developers you have working on your project. Lets say you have 30 developers and each developer breaks the build once per month. That could mean that you have a broken build every day! Gated check-ins help, but they have a down side that manifests as queued builds and moaning developers. The way to combat this is to have more build servers, but with that comes complexity. Inevitably you will need to install components that you would expect to be installed on target computers, but how do you keep track of which build servers have which bits? What about a geographically diverse team? If you have a centrally controlled infrastructure you might have build servers in multiple regions and you don’t want teams in Sydney copying files from Beijing and vice a versa on a regular basis. So, what is the answer. Its Tags. You can add a set of Tags to your agents and then set which tags to look for in the build definition. Figure: Open up your Build Controller Manager Select “Build | Manage Build Controllers…” to get a list of all of your controllers and he build agents that are associated with them. Figure: the list of build agents and their controllers Each of these Agents might be subtly different. For example only one of these agents has FTP software installed. This software is required for only one of the many builds we have set up. My ethos for build servers is to keep them as clean as possible and not to install anything that is not absolutely necessary. For me that means anything that does not add a *.target file is suspect, and should really be under version control and called via the command line from there. So, some of the things you may install are: Silverlight 4 SDK Visual Studio 2010 Visual Studio 2008 WIX etc You should not install things that will not end up on the target users computer. For a website that means something different to a client than to a server, but I am sure you get the idea. One thing you can do to make things easier is to create a tag for each of the things that you install. that way developers can find the things they need. We may change to using a more generic tagging structure (Like “Web Application” or “WinForms Application”) if this gets too unwieldy, but for now the list of tags is limited. Figure: Tags associated with one of our build agents Once you have your Build Agents all tagged up ALL your builds will start to fail This is because the default setting for a build is to look for an Agent that exactly matches the tags for the build, and we have not added any yet. The quick way to fix this is to change the “Tag Comparison Operator” from “ExactMatch” to “MatchAtLease” to get your build immediately working. Figure: Tag Comparison Operator changes to MatchAtLeast to get builds to run. The next thing to do is look for specific tags. You just select from the list of available tags and the controller will make sure you get to a build agent that uses them. Figure: I want Silverlight, VS2010 and WIX, but do not care about Location. And there you go, you can now have build agents for different purposes and regions within the same environment. You can also use name filtering, so if you have a good Agent naming convention you can filter by that for regions. For example, your Agents might be “SYDVMAPTFSBP01” and “SYDVMAPTFSBP02” so a name filter of “SYD*” would target all of the Sydney build agents. Figure: Agent names can be used for filtering as well This flexibility will allow you to build better software by reducing the likelihood of not having a certain dependency on the target machines. • New Computer won't boot up

  I brought new components and put a computer together. I installed win7(32bit) and everything was working as it should. However my case came with two USB3 front ports I could not connect because of motherboard did not support USB3, so I swapped out the board for a new motherboad with USB3 connection. Now I put everything back together but it won't bootup. "Memory Ok" light stay on. Motherboad LED is on. There is power, all fans are on but I got no display. There is no activity in back of the systems, none of the peripheral connection in the back are working. I have tried the following but to no avail. Reboot multiple times Unplug power and plug the power back Reset the CMOS battery..let it stays out for 10 minutes or more. Unplug all peripheral device but no luck Reset memory..... nothing happen The only thing I did not do was remove the cpu...but I unplug everything else. Please help, thank you.

• Ungrounded laptop (Macbook Pro) buzzes in headphones, weird feeling when fingers brush lightly

  I've got a nearly 3-year-old MacBook Pro 15" 2.16GHz (MacBookPro2,2). When I have am not using the extended, grounded adapter for the power supply, just using the simple, two-prong plug I can hear a buzzing when I use very sensitive earbuds. This goes away if I touch a metal part of the laptop. Also, I can feel a weird, fuzzy feeling when I brush the metal parts of the laptop lightly with my fingers/skin. Somewhat similar to feeling of a touching hair or a balloon that's charged with static electricity. But I'm not getting sparks or anything. And if I'm touching a metal part of my laptop solidly (not just brushing it) and then I touch someone else's skin I can feel the same effect and so can my victim. I've noticed similar effects with an ungrounded electric blanket. But with that the buzzing can be easily heard without headphones. Is this a defect, normal, or something else? And what exactly is happening?

• USB device goes to "Unknown device" randomly

  We have a kiosk that uses a bio scanner from m2sys (usb device). It scans your palm to recognize you. Every so often, maybe 1-3 times a day, the bio scanner will become an unknown device. We are unable to see any patterns or commonalities. When we unplug and plug it back in, it becomes available again. We have custom software that uses the bio scanner's software to communicate with it. We've added a crap load of logging on everything but there doesn't seem to be any pattern of when the thing shuts off. We have these devices deployed to multiple locations (100+) and they are all seeing the issues but we can not reproduce it here, at the main office. I've evaluated the software and I don't see anything. I'm thinking it's a driver or hardware issue (but we can't reproduce the issues here in the main office) or maybe environmental interference of some sort like from scan guns, automatic doors, microwaves or something else. Any ideas would be welcome. I'm looking for possible causes of the usb device becoming unknown or ways to figure out what the cause is. no other usb devices have this issue, only the scanner We've contacted the manufacturer and they blame our software We're getting help from Microsoft, but they haven't found anything OS is embedded XP http://www.m2sys.com/palm-vein-reader.htm

• Fetch videos from sony handycam to linux

  I've got a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD101. When I plug connect the USB cable to my laptop (Ubuntu 10) it doesn't mount any storage device. • Copying SD Cards with "LaCie d2 Network"

  The LaCie d2 Network has a feature where by you can attach a USB drive and press the blue button at the from and it will copy the drive contents (no computer required). (See this review for more info). USB 2.0 and eSATA ports are also provided but these are not designed for extending the d2 Network's storage. Rather, they allow you to connect portable drives for uploading their data to the d2 Network directly. The process is quite slick, too: just plug in a drive and press the big blue button on the front of the unit to trigger an immediate upload. This copies over everything on the external device and seems ideal for camera use. Is it possible to use an microSD or SD card adapter (like the Kingston MobileLite 9-in-1) and copy the contents of the card? I'm assuming the card reader just "looks like" a normal USB flash drive the computer or (in this case) LaCie d2 Network. Is this assumption correct? Do you know any reason why this won't work?

• Why can't I route to some sites from my MacBook Pro that I can see from my iPad?

  I am on M1 Cable (residential) broadband in Singapore. I have an intermittent problem routing to some sites from my MacBook Pro—often Google-related sites (arduino.googlecode.com and ajax.googleapis.com right now, but sometimes even gmail.com.) This prevents StackExchange chat from working, for instance. Funny thing is, my iPad can route to those sites and they're on the same wireless network! I can ping the sites, but not traceroute to them which I find odd. That I can get through via the iPad implies the problem is with the MBP. In any case, calling M1 support is... not helpful. I get the same behaviour when I bypass the Airport Express entirely and plug the MBP directly into the cable modem. • Recover Lost Form Data in Firefox

  Have you ever filled in a text area or form in a webpage and something happens before you can finish it? If you like the idea of recovering that lost data then you will want to have a look at the Lazarus: Form Recovery extension for Firefox. Lazarus: Form Recovery in Action For our first example we chose the comment text box area for one of the articles here at the website. As you can see we were not finished typing in the whole comment yet… Notice the “Lazarus Icon” in the lower right corner. Note: We simulated accidental tab closures for our two examples. After getting our webpage opened up again all of our text was gone. Right clicking within the text area showed two options available…”Recover Text & Recover Form”. Notice that our lost text was listed as a “sub menu”…this could be extremely useful in matching up the appropriate text to the correct webpage if you had multiple tabs open before something happened. Click on the correct text listing to insert it. So easy to finish writing our comment without having to start from zero again. In our second example we chose the sign-up form page for the website. As before we were not finished filling in the form… Getting the webpage opened back up showed the same problem as before…all the entered text was lost. This time we right clicked in the browser window area and there was that wonderful “Recover Form Command” waiting to be used. One click and… All of our lost form data was back and we were able to finish filling in the form. For those who may be interested you can disable Lazarus: Form Recovery on individual websites using the “Context Menu” for the “Status Bar Icon” Options There are three sections in the options and you should take a quick look through them to make any desired modifications in how Lazarus: Form Recovery functions. The first “Options Area” focuses on display/access for the extension. The second “Options Area” allows you to expand the type of data retained, enable removal of data within a given time frame, set up a password, disable search indexing, and enable form data retention while in “Private Browsing Mode”. The third “Options Area” focuses on the Lazarus database itself. Conclusion If you have ever lost text area or form data before then you know how much time could be lost in starting over. Lazarus: Form Recovery helps provide a nice backup solution to get you up and running once again with a minimum of effort. • security update in centos, which way is it?

  Recently something have been bothered with my mind regarding my linux CentOS box.My client have been asking to set up a CentOS machine in their environment which works as server. One of their requirement is to make sure that the set up is to be as secure as possible. Mostly have been covered except the security update inside CentOS. So my question are as follows: 1.. How to apply the latest security,patches or bug fixes in CentOS? When doing some research, I've been told that we can update the security of CentOS by running yum install yum-security but after install this plug in,seems there is no output for this method.Its like this command is not working anymore. 2.. Can i update the security patches through rpm packages? I couldn't find any site that can download the security patches,enhancement or bug fixes for CentOS.But I know that CentOS have been releasing these update through their CentOS announcement here It just it lack of documentation on how to apply these update into my CentOS installation. For now the only way that I know is to run yum update I am hoping that someone can help me to clarify these matter.Thanks.

• Windows 7 64bits installation via USB asks for drivers

  I just bought a new config ( ASUS p8z68-v lx, i5-2500k + ram and new graphic card ). Coming back and installing it in my old computer, I just saw that my DVD player was on IDE (yup…). So, I needed to install windows 7 64bits from my usb key. Fine, I made my usb key bootable and copy the official DVD on it (the same version that was on my old computer), set BIOS to boot on it first and started the computer up. It worked fine until it asks me for cd/dvd drivers (which is funny since, I do it via USB because I can't plug in my DVD player :D) I have 3 SATA HDD plugged in and that's it. I made a small google search and found that it could be SATA or RAID drivers. Fine, I took another USB KEY and put all my motherboard drivers on it (from the CD sold with the MB) and none of those drivers seemed to work. I tried downloading new drivers from ASUS website and same effect. Any idea but no "buy a new DVD player", I'm now broke for the month :) ?

• How to find out which program a default beep is coming from in Windows 7?

  There's a "default beep" (as defined in System Sounds) that emanates from my computer every so often. It kind of goes like this (where each number is a "default beep" sound): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So there's a distinct pattern to it. I thought I had this figured out a way to figure out what was happening by going to Control Panel-Ease of Access-Ease of Access Center-Replace sounds with visual cues But that just isn't the case. Whichever window I click on, that one displays the visual queue when this happens. It's driving me crazy, and I can't figure out which program is causing this. Update: it appears to only happen on one user profile on the computer...does that help? Update 2: Discovered that this sound was coming from a utility on my laptop called ASUS NB Probe; I'm certain that it is emanating from this program because the error message displayed by it changes in sync with the sound playing. Apparently the S.M.A.R.T. feature of my hard drive was reporting an issue. It displays the issue for a brief second and then makes it disappear, I'll have to keep watching it to see what it says, but I believe is says something about a read. I have an external hdd connected with eSATA to a container of sorts (BlacX) that you can plug two hdds into. I have one hdd attached and it's a Western Digital WD1001FALS - 00E8B0 Thanks again! • ProCurve 1800 switch issue

  I recently deployed ProCurve 1800-24G switches in place of some older ProCurve 2424M switches in my network. However, I'm having a serious problem with the switch connected to the router. It seems, every night when our Windows 2008 R2 server (off site) runs a backup to a iSCSI target (on site) [facilitated through a PPTP tunnel] the LAN loses connectivity with the router. To clarify, there is only one router which is connected to the switch affected by this problem. The only way to resolve the issue is to either reboot the router or pull the ethernet cable that goes to the router and plug it back in. During the outage, clients cannot receive DHCP requests, DNS requests, ping, or do anything else with the router in this state. Now, neither the switch or router are configured extensively and the issue only seems to have surfaced with the new switch in place. I have tried a number of things including replacing cables, rebooting and checking the switch configuration (it is literally as basic as you can get at this point-- flat LAN, no trunking). Interestingly, the router shows (accessed externally) no changes in configuration or status during this state but similarly cannot ping or access other hosts on the network. This issue occurs in different stages of backup (ie, different amounts transferred). I've also dumped packets from the switch into WireShark but cannot seem to find any anomaly yet (I'm looking at packets around the time the issue appeared and at the time when I reset the NIC). Any suggestions for what to look for? Ideas on what could be causing this? I'm seeing some transmit/receive errors on the NIC from both the router and switch side but nothing serious when compared to the total packet counts. I'm seriously doubting hardware at this point, as I have tried another switch, different cables, and a different NIC on the router.

• What is the minimal steps to setup a client-server network using Windows Server 2008 R2 standard?

  Background I have One computer server with Win Server 2008 R2 standard installed but it has not been configured. This server has 2 LAN adapters. One adapter is connected to ISP and the other one connected to HUB/Switch. Other computers working as clients are connected to the same HUB/Switch to which the server is connected. IP Printers, IP scanners, IP camera are also connected to the same HUB/Switch. Note: I am a newbie. I only know how to plug RJ-45 sockets and assembly computer peripherals. I have no prior experience in Windows Server at all. Please teach me from the newbie's point of view. Objective I want to establish the following: Each client can access the internet, printers, scanners after it has been successfully authenticated by the server. Unauthenticated clients cannot access the internet, printers, etc. The server hosts a local site. Clients can browse internally using a private domain www.company.com. If the same domain name has been used by other on the internet, my private domain must override the public domain.

• Moving Farm to co-location hosting - network settings requirements

  I am moving my farm (2 Dell's R620) to a co-location hosting service. I am trying to figure out the secure way to have my network settings The requirements are: VM1 is the working HOST, includes: esxi 5.1, vSphere, 4 clients (w2008r2 all) VM2 has esxi 5.1 installed, and a single machine with Veeam Backup and copy 6.5 - keeping a copy of VM1 clients on the VM2 internal storage (this solution is due to a very small budget - in case of failure on Host 1 - can redirect IP's) Only 2 VM clients require network address and access from the WWAN - ISP provides IP's range for them (with Gateway and DNS) I need connection to the iDrac's from my office (option to create a VPN-SSL tunnel) Connection to the vSphere appliances I want to be able to RDP to the VM clients The current configuration is that each host has the iDrac dedicated nic connected , and another (NIC #1) connected - with a static IP on 192.168.3.x The iDrac's have a static IP from the same network range (19.168.3.x) It will look something like this: My thoughts: On NIC#2 of both hosts I will connected a crossed cable I will give each VM clients that needs internet access a 2ndry VM network with the assigned IP from the ISP open only to web - can not access from the My Question: Should I give IP's (external) to the machines who DO NOT require WWAN Access? - I can't see a way to RDP to them directly if not. Should I use the crossed cable? or just plug NIC #2 to the switch? Will this setup even work? What do I need to verify? What Virtual nic's and/or switches should I create on the Hosts?

• Intel D2500HN Atom D2500 Doesn't turn on

  I recently bought parts from Amazon to build an embedded PC, and have assembled everything. I have: Intel D2500HN Mini-ITX Motherboard Mini-Box Pico-PSU 80 M350 Universal Min-ITX Enclosure 2GB DDR3 Memory Kinamax AD-LCD12 LCD Monitors 12V 6A 72W AC Adapter Power Supply The motherboard gets a light (on the motherboard, not on the Pico-PSU) when I plug it into the power adapter. Furthermore, I see the power switch light come on when I press the power button. However, the display doesn't turn on, and it doesn't seem that the PC is actually turned on. Since I'm seeing these lights, I know that the motherboard is getting power. Furthermore, the display VGA port is embedded into the motherboard, so that's not the issue. I'm just trying to figure out what COULD be the issue aside from a faulty motherboard. I have a diagram of the D2500HN motherboard which labels everything, and have ensured that the power LED as well as the On/Off cables are plugged into the right spots, although to be sure I've tried flipping these two cables around, and also plugging 1 cable into the other cable's spot & vice-versa. Is there anything else you folks think I may be missing, or anything else I can do to try to troubleshoot this issue before sending the motherboard back?

  One of the areas that introduced many new features on the latest release (11.1.1.4.0)  of JDeveloper 11g R1 is ADF Desktop integration - in this article I’ll provide an overview of these new features. New ADF Desktop Integration Ribbon in Excel - After installing the ADF desktop integration add-in and depending on the mode in which you open the desktop integration workbook, the ADF Desktop integration ribbon for design time and runtime are displayed as a separate tab within Excel. In previous version the ADF Desktop integration environment used to be placed inside the add-ins tab. Above you can see both, design time ribbon as well as runtime ribbon. On the design time ribbon you can manage the workbook and worksheet properties, worksheet component properties, diagnostics, execution and publication of the workbook. The runtime version of the ribbon is totally customizable and represents what it used to be the runtime menu on the spreadsheet, in this ribbon you can include all the operations and actions that could be executed by the end user while working with the spreadsheet data. Diagnostics - A very important aspect for developers is how to debug or verify the interactions of the client with the server, for that ADF desktop integration has provided since day one a series of diagnostics tools. In this release the diagnostics tools are more visible and are really easy to configure. You can access the client console while testing the workbook, or you can simple dump all the messages to a log file – having the ability of setting the output level for both. Security - There are a number of enhancements on security but the one with more impact for developers is tha security now is optional when using ADF Desktop Integration. Until this version every time that you wanted to work with ADFdi it was a must that the application was previously secured. In this release security is optional which means that if you have previously defined security on your application, then you must secure the ADFdi servlet as explained in one of my previous (ADD LINK) posts. In the other hand, if but the time that you start working with ADFdi you have not defined security, you can test and publish your workbooks without adding security. Support for Continuous Integration - In this release we have added tooling for continuous integration building. in the ADF desktop integration space, the concept translates to adding functionality that developers can use to publish ADFdi workbooks as part of their entire application build. For that purpose, we have a publish tool that can be easily invoke from an ANT task such that all the design time workbooks are re-published into the latest version of the application building process. Key Column - At runtime, on any worksheet containing editable tables you will notice a new additional column called the key column. The purpose of this column is to make the end user aware that all rows on the table need to be selected at the time of sorting. The users cannot alter the value of this column. From the developers points of view there are no steps required in order to have the key column included into the worksheets. Installation and Creation of New Workbooks - Both use cases can be executed now directly from JDeveloper. As part of the Tools menu options the developer can install the ADF desktop integration designer. Also, creating new workbooks that previously was done through that convert tool shipped with JDeveloper is now automatic done from the New Gallery. Creating a new ADFdi workbook adds metadata information information to the Excel workbook so you can work in design time. Other Enhancements Support for Excel 2010 and the ADF components ready-only enabled don’t allow to change its value – the cell in Excel is automatically protected, this could cause confusion among customers of previous releases.

  I am looking for a home backup solution for my single Windows 7 (Home Premium) PC. I have about 500GB of data to backup. I would like to spend less than GBP 300 on the solution. I don't see the need to backup the whole PC, rather specific folder branches (iTunes, photos, documents, Outlook files, user folders such as desktop, favorites etc). I would like a solution that enables me to maintain backups in two separate physical locations (e.g. home and work). To facilitate this I am imagining a storage unit with slots for two removable drives, along with three separate drives. At any one time two of the drives will be being backed up to in the storage unit. The third will be located at my work. Periodically I will take one of the drives into work and leave it there, then bring the drive that was there back home, and plug it into the storage unit. It will then be backed up along with the other drive that was left in the storage unit. This approach should cover scenarios such as virus attack and fire or theft from one location. Thoughts and comments on the sanity of this approach please...

• Laptop sleep: How to go into S3 easily?

  Laptop: Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi-3525 OS: Vista When my laptop is plugged in and I close the lid, it goes into S1 sleep. This means that there is still: fan noise (annoying when trying to sleep at night) lots of power consumed (so if I then unplug the laptop and toss it in the bag, by the time I'm at school it's already drained and beeping ominously). What I want is S3 sleep, it solves both problems. I've found a roundabout way to go into S3 sleep: Unplug laptop Close lid (or click Sleep in Start menu) Plug laptop back in if needed The question: How do I force Windows to use always use S3 sleep when I close the lid? One thing I've tried is: dumppo admin minsleep=s3 (dumppo from here) Afterwards running just dumppo admin confirms that minsleep has been set, but closing the lid still goes into S1. Also, after a reboot, minsleep is reset to s1. I think dumppo is incompatible with Vista... MCE Standby Tool was recommended as a Vista-compatible alternative to dumppo, but it doesn't have any effect either. I looked in the BIOS settings, but there are no settings relating to ACPI sleeps/suspends there.

• [URGENT HELP PLEASE]USB Flash Drive Problem!

  Here it goes. My friend saved by his works into my flash drive which was detectable/openable but ... The very next day, the drive wouldn't show up in My Computer and Windows gave him error code 43 (Unknown device). I been searching for the next few hours to find a solution as the works inside is important to him. I know he should back up his files but let's not go there. So .... I tried others few systems that once detected his flash drive but the problem still persisted. I don't know whether or not his flash drive is damaged but when plug/un-plugging, there are still sounds coming out though. Tried solutions: [On Vista Home Premium/HIS COME]Uninstalled -- Restarted com -- Re-installed (ERROR 43) [Windows 7/MY COM] Uninstalled --- Restarted com --- Can't install (ERROR 43) It seems that my com (Windows 7) had the lastest drivers already but still can't detect it. Its a Kingston DataTraveller 101 (DT101) 8GB. Could unplugging the flash drive without clicking "Safely Remove Hardware" is the problem? Kindly provide some help. Thank you all.
