• Microdata Without Reviews

  I have not been able to find a clear issue on omitting reviews from Microdata. I understand that Microdata values for reviews will default to a certain number when omitted, but I was wondering if it would be correct/acceptable to completely omit the review node completely. I can see where reviews and average "star" ratings would be of help to the end user, especially for things like recipes. However, what if there are no reviews for a product or application? To be completely clear - let's isolate this question to only software applications or extensions. What if a particular piece of software or extension was not featured on an "app store" or other site that provided reviews? Wouldn't the formats still be helpful by providing version number, download URL, compatible software - etc? Sorry for the lengthy background, but I just don't understand why it seems that reviews must be part of a Microdata markup. Or, am I wrong in this assumption?

• Share on: FB, Tweet, Digg, Linkedin, Delicious, My mother, ... it's just on fashion, or some real value?

  Nowadays your site is not in fashion if you don't show at least a couple of share buttons like these: Is this just fashion, or do people actually get something good out of it? When I say "something good" I mostly mean something that you could measure, and not just the feeling that was good. Maybe I can better explain with an example: did you notice (in some way) that many people clicked on those links to share your page/s on those web 2.0 social sites? And in such a case on which social networks did you see they mostly share your pages? BTW I'm not talking about Google PR, i know all web 2.0 social sites use nofollow everywhere and even hidden links, so they are useless by themselves for PR. UPDATE: According to this video, Google's Alter Ego says that they now use in some way data from social sites in ranking. If this is true, it's obvious that the Share on button for FB, Tweet, etc are definitely of some values. But again my question is more about what you noticed in your real experience to be a direct benefit of adding those type of "Share On" links on your webisite? I.e. did you see more traffic coming in form FB, or some users who bought your products because of FB or Twitter? Or any other benefits? Thanks

• What does it mean that hosting ToS DOESN'T allows HOTLINKS and WHY is it like that?

  Free hosting services often doesn't allow to use hotlinks. I'm not sure if I understand it well and what is the reason of such a disaproval. I would like to have pictures for my webpages in Photobucket e.g. which is allowed to have hotlinks and use those pictures using hotlinks on my sites. Is it that what is not allowed? What is a problem for free host server owners to accept such links? Bandwidth of Photobucket is used only as I understand and it is completely legal. I'v read quite enough abt hotlinks, but I can't understand this simple issue.

• Which kind of sitemap directory should I build for a search based navigation site

  I have a search based navigation web-site. Each query has filters as well as sort-by. The search results point to end-pages inside the site. Each of those pages has many outlinks to other end-pages. Currently I have a XML sitemap which directs crawlers to all the end pages. I'm trying to add a silo sitemap directory to improve SEO. Assuming this is the right direction I have a couple of options: end pages sorted alphabetically. Pages by major search filters, and then divide alphabetically. Pages for every filter and cross option between them and the sort-by. Which would you recommend and why?

• Unknown CSS font-family oddity with IE7-10 on Windows Vista, 7, 8

  I am seeing the following "oddity" with IE7-10 on Windows Vista, 7, 8: When declaring font-family: serif; I am seeing an old bitmapped serif font that I can't identify (see screenshot below) instead of the expected font Times New Roman. I know it's an old bitmapped font because it displays aliased, without any font smoothing, with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8 (just like Courier on every version of Win). Screenshot: I would like to know (1) can anyone else confirm my research and (2) BONUS: which font is IE displaying? Notes: IE6 and IE7 on Win XP displays Times New Roman, as they should. It doesn't matter if font-family: serif; is declared in an external stylesheet or inline on the element. Quoting the CSS attribute makes no difference. • Legal Web Fonts & Licensing

  So I'm a little confused in regards to legality of using fonts for web. Often from designers I get a PSD file and it uses a special font, and the font is supplied. However attempting to convert the font using: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface/generator Ends up with a message saying it's blocked by Adobe. Not only that sometimes if the font can be converted, it often looks like crap when viewed in a browser. I assume that the generator is primarily for people to convert their own fonts, but if you purchase the use of a font then you can only use it for Web if the terms allows you to? The fonts used in PSD's are often Adobe Fonts, I can't find anything that suggests I can convert those and use them on the web. So I'm wondering if anyone knows the legal rights around using Photoshop supplied fonts on the web? In addition I'm wondering what resources are available (free/paid) that provide fonts that can be used on the web. • my wiki site using mediawiki - databases not found error

  I had been using mediawiki opensource in my website to display programming articles. Today i tried to access my site but it showed database not found. Mediawiki uses many databases. When i logged in my control panel and checked i can see that most of the databases created by mediawiki is missing so is the reason i am getting this error. I have used mediawiki for two different purposes. It is like two modules. For one the databases are missing and for the other i think the data is corrupt. Do anybody know any issue with mediawiki security or would this be a problem with the webhosting cause we have faced several problems with them initially like before three years and recently the were good. Yet this happened. I have requested to hosting company to look into it and meanwhile i am expecting the help from stackexchange users. How do i check the logs for table deletion?

• How can I keep my privacy while owning multiple domain names?

  I want to own, create and run x# of domains. I do not want 'whois' to have my name, home address and home phone available to anyone who looks me up. I've already bought a mailbox that I can use for my physical address. But... that doesn't get my name and number question answered. What is the best way to be anonymous yet still be legal? Do I need to incorporate all my sites and get an LLC? Can I create a company name without becoming an LLC? Then there's the phone number.... Thanks in advance to all who respond!

• Google Blogger Website CName and/or Text File Issues

  I have a blogger Blog website and I would like to have it show up on my company website. I have read a couple articles out there on how to do it. A hand full of them talk about using FTP which is old and no longer available. However, I am trying to following along with this one: http://www.infinite42.com/small-business/integrate-blogger-blog-website Which seems pretty easy but I am having a problem getting Google to Verify the DNS CName or Text Record that I created on my Windows 2007 Server. Do I need to create this record at the registra level. Right now the domain is setup at the registra to point the www record to my server where on my server I tried the Txt Record and the CName Record with no luck in DNS. Here are the Google instructions for creating a CName file record in DNS: Follow the steps below to create a DNS (Domain Name System) record that proves to Google that you own the domain. Add the CNAME record below to the DNS configuration for abc.com. CNAME Label / Host: CNAME Destination / Target: Click Verify below. When Google finds this DNS record, we'll make you a verified owner of the domain. (Note: DNS changes may take some time. If we don't find the record immediately, we'll check for it periodically.) To stay verified, don't remove the DNS record, even after verification succeeds. Here is the link to do it with a CName: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/08/domain-verification-using-cname-records.html When I go to add my CName record on my server's DNS the only two fields available are Alias Name and Fully Qualified Domain Name.   I know Google webmaster supports submitting Image, mobile, video and other types of sitemaps. YAHOO also mentions about mobile site map here. But does it support Image and video sitemaps. I could not find if BING supports any of these types other than XML sitemaps. Can someone please point me to any documentation on submitting Index, Image and Mobile sitemaps. Also does YAHOO and Bing support index sitemap files?

  My employer, a University, regularly hosts conferences and other events. While websites for these sites are hosted on our domain, they frequently request customized .com urls. We then forward these domains to the specific site. Recently, we discovered a problem, where a page will not load if the following conditions are met(using a current example): website is created on our CMS for a conference http://continue.weber.edu/nulc a domain is created http://www.nulc2012.com and forwarded to http://continue.weber.edu/nulc The user enters http://www.nulc2012.com into their address bar using IE7 or IE8 The user has *.weber.edu listed as a "trusted site" in IE security settings (the case for nearly all on-campus computers) When this happens, their browser will correctly transfer to the page http://continue.weber.edu/nulc/index.php, however the page is blank, returning only: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content="text/html; charset=windows-1252" http-equiv=Content-Type></HEAD> <BODY></BODY></HTML> Is there any know solution to this problem? Or am I missing something completely? Note: Tested websites do load correctly in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari

  Talking with some other people recently, it came up an interesting topic. The core question at hand is: What's the real importance and weight of the <title> tag in a web site? For instance, what are the consequences if a site has the same <title> tag on all the pages, reporting only the site name? Or better (or worse) no title tag at all? Will that be a little/medium/huge SEO problem? How will the pages appear on search engines? Will fixing it in a later stage be problematic since pages have already been indexed? How does it compromise the overall usability/accessibility/experience? Is that a "feature" that can be omitted, or it can't even be considered a "feature" but a core element? I have quite my opinion on this topic, but I'd really love to hear what other experts (you) think about it.

• Do I create new site or add to existing site?

  Hi, Suppose, as an example, I have a website with the address, www.cool-gifts.com and I'm getting regular sales and its a worthwhile site, but no great fireworks. After research I find that there is a great market for '2nd hand stuff' and I'd like to serve that market. Would it be best to add '2nd hand stuff' as an additional category of gifts in my existing site....or, since the 2nd hand stuff is a market in itself, would I be better off investing time and energy bringing up a whole new site (www.used-stuff.com)? If I had employees and financial resources, it probably would be a no-brainer...start a new site. But, what if you are a small guy, with limited resources? So...new site....or add to existing site?

• Multiple 301 redirects, do search engines/viewers see them all?

  I've put in place lots of different 301 rules to deal with numerous url changes. And for certain URLS there are 3-4 different 301 redirects landing the visitors to the new URL. I heard that 301 loses pagerank/linkjuice. ALl the 301 are onsite for the same domain. With a mix of php 301s and htaccess 301s. so for instance articles/news.php?id=2 --- articles/blog.php?id=2 [filename change] articles/* --- /* [subdir to root] /blog.php?id=2 --- /title-of-post [mod rewrite url change] so if you were to visit /articles/news.php?id=2 there will be two 301 redirects until you land on the /yellow-wellington-boots/, my question is does google see the intermediate redirects, or just the final page the 301's redirect to.

• My events don't show up in the goal funnels or conversion funnels

  I have an event set up on a website and I'd like to track the effect this event has on conversion rate. The event seems to be working fine - I can see it on Top Events with all the labels, etc. But when going into Goal Flow and selecting 'Event Category' these events don't show up. I have this running for about a week. And I have made multiple checks to verify that I have events that triggered the conversion goal. Any clue about what I'm doing wrong?

• Get aggregated view of data for entire website with Google Analytics

  I have a website (www.ayrshireminis.com), which has three main sections under different directories, these are: /forum /galleries /contact I would like to have an aggregated view of the data for the whole website, but also for each section. What is the recommended approach for doing this? I believe I can create a web property that includes a profile for the entire website and duplicated filtered profiles, each section having an include filter. This is my gut instinct, but i'd like to know if there is another (better) way to do it? Maybe by having one account that includes a profile for the whole site and another profile with an include filter for the individual sections?
