• Ubuntu cannot access internet, LAN is fine

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server that is directly connected to our Comcast Business Gateway modem and I have configured it with 1 of our 5 allotted Static IPs. My other machines on our LAN can connect to this server (via ssh, web, ping, etc.) but I cannot access this server from outside our network, and this machine cannot get out to the internet either (ping google.com fails with unknown host). Here is my /etc/networking/interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 173.162.54.19 netmask 255.255.255.248 broadcast 173.162.54.23 gateway 173.162.54.22 and my /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 68.87.77.130 nameserver 68.87.72.130 output from sudo route -n: Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 173.162.54.16 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.248 U 0 0 0 eth0 0.0.0.0 173.162.54.22 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 I have a Windows 2008 machine with an almost identical Static IP, static DNS setup and it works correctly, can access it within the LAN and also from public internet, the Windows machine and the Ubuntu machine are both directly connected to the Comcast Business Gateway. I have tried rebooting Ubuntu, rebooting my Comcast modem, but nothing seems to make it work. I'm an Ubuntu noob, is there some other config I need to apply to make this work? • Allow access to printer between interfaces on Cisco ASA5510

  I have a Cisco ASA5510 where we have to separate networks on two separate interfaces. The networks have and should have nothing to do with each other except that network B needs to access a printer on network A. Network A: 192.168.137.0/24 Printer: 192.168.137.20 Network B: 192.168.0.0/24 I've added an incoming rule from Network A to the Printer IP in the ASDM interface but clients can't print. Our previous router was configured to let traffic through so the clients on Network B is already configured so it think it should work if the traffic is allowed. How do I let clients on Network B communicate with the printer?

• access netatalk share on osx permission issue

  I have two users in ubuntu. My first was me and I am the owner of the folder in question. The second is my wife. Netatalk is running and we can both see the folder on the network. However I can access it but she cannot. She gets an error in osx "... you don't have permission to see its contents". I have use chmod 777 on the folder but it made no difference. Any ideas? UPDATE The directory in question is a mounted harddrive at /media/ourPhotos

I have two sites enabled: default (ServerName localhost) site2 (ServerName jslib) I run a windows Virtual Box Machine, to be able to test my stuff in IE. If i type the ubuntu's IP in the addressbar i get the localhost. I was wondering how can i access both (or more as i need it) from other machines. Thanks update I have configured the windows' hosts file like so: 10.0.2.2 localhost 10.0.2.2 jslib It works, but i am really looking for something that i can configure on the server side, and then just change the value of the URL, am i crazy?

  I'm working with Amazon's EC2 for the first time. I went through all of the steps at http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/latest/GettingStartedGuide/ and now I'm trying to access the public DNS through a web browser. I get nothing. I don't even know if I'm supposed to get anything, really. I just want to see something that indicates that my instance is accessible from the web for development's sake. I'm completely new at this and I can't find a simple answer to this anywhere to save my life. Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

  We have a RESTful web service (Java, hosted in Tomcat on Ubuntu on Amazon EC2). From time to time it fails (not every week). When it fails, Java CPU consumption goes to 100% and it takes all available memory. It does not finish by itself. I have to restart the server. There is nothing suspicious in Tomcat access logs. I guess one of our users could submit a very "heavy" request which brought the server down. Is it possible this request is not in Tomcat logs since it never finished?

  I would like to make a script which can maintain multiple servers via SSH. I want to control the authentication/authorization in such a manner that authentication is done by gateway and any other access is routed through this ssh server to internal services without any further authentication/authorization requirements. So if a user A can log into server_1 for example. He can then ssh to server_2 without any other authentication and do what ever he is allowed to do on server_2 (like shut down mysql, upgrade it and restart it. This could be done via some remote shell script). The problem that I am trying to solve is to come up with a deployment script for a JavaEE system which involves databases and tomcat instances. They need to be shutdown and re-spawned. The requirement is to have a deployment script which has minimal human interaction as possible for both developers and operation.

  I need FTP on my local LAN so my scanner can send me scans. I am on Debian sid. I installed ftpd and created the user anonymous. I removed anonymous from /etc/ftpusers When I try to login as anonymous it says: login failed. I can't seem to find any log file. I'm using FTP server (Version 6.4/OpenBSD/Linux-ftpd-0.17) update:I needed that so my printer had one place to store my scanned documents on the LAN. solved that buying a dedicated USB pen drive (thankfully I bought a printer one with plenty of options) but in the past this was a very simple task. Install ftpd, specify the directory for anonymous access, and be done with it. now every ftp daemon has several layers of security and chroot in it's core... this is just crazy when all you need a place for a printer to dump files in a secured network.

  Is there an easy way to install packages with a large dependency tree, provided that you don't have superuser access? For instance, say I wanted to install firefox. Firefox has a ton of dependencies, each of which have their own dependencies, etc. Installing these the "./configure; make; make install" way would take forever. Is there an option I can give apt-get to make it install in a personal directory? Or is there a way to hack it to do all the heavy lifting for me?

• VM clients can not access WAN

  I have a new VM host on my network, on a Dell R620. The dedicated iDrac is connected with static IP of: 192.168.3.x NIC #1 is connected to my router The eSXI 5.1 host is with IP of 192.168.3.250 The vSphere appliance has a static IP of 192.168.3.241 All the clients on the new host are in the same network 192.168.3.x All clients are Windows 2008 R2 My problem is that non of the clients can access the WAN. I can't ping anything which is beyond my router. I CAN ping anything within my router, even if it's on a different subnet - 192.168.0.x (Router rules are in tact and working) I can ping the gateway (192.168.3.254) One thing that I checked, and is bothering my (but don't know if it has any relevance) is that on the Host Networking properties, there is a vmnic0 (picture) that shows as if it only recognizes 192.168.0.x network - is that so? The command: route print shows me the following details, where I have a duplicate entry for 0.0.0.0 (and one is wrong) - which is probably also why it's not working

  I have a 450 meg .pst file (MS Outlook 2003 backup file) saved from a PC before it crashed. I would like to break it up into its components i.e. Save attachments to folders on my PC Paste text-emails into a word processor, etc. But I don't want to buy MS Office Professional 2003 or later solely for importing the .pst into MS Outlook 2003+. Outlook Express cannot import .pst files, only Outlook “proper” can. Is there some free email client out there, e.g. Thunderbird, that can import .pst files? Or is there some other way to access the 450meg file?

• when connected to vpn, can't access certain things

  my companies vpn is not a standard windows vpn. It uses Juniper Networks and it intalls locally something called "Host Checker" prior to allowing me to connect. I have noticed 2 things that I can't access while on vpn. etrade.com - no idea why this specific website, but I can't get to it, maybe https? use of my magik jack - I'm assuming this is some sort of a port conflict issue. if im on a call when i connect, i lose all reception. if i try to make a call after conected, ic an't even get it to dial. Can anyone tell me how I would even begin to debug this. I expect if I call the help desk they won't be much help, but if I can tell them the specific problems of conflicts, maybe I have a chance of them working with me to get it working.

Following these directions (Installing MySQL on Mac OS X) I added a file to /usr and the contents were PATH=/usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH Actually I was trying to get the mysql command to work now I cannot access terminal. All I get is a cursor but no command line. I also cannot find the file I created in the Finder. I used command shift G to find the folder /usr and the file is not there. Edit: I Solved the problem by restarting my computer. I am really not sure what the problem was. I got the idea because Could not open a new pseudo-tty. appeared in my terminal after following slhck directions to remove my .profile file.   I have a PC that has the ability to handle running multiple game clients at once (specifically Tera Online). What I'd like to do is assign and/or restrict each clients access to a device (Gamepad) so that the actions from each device only effects the client I specify. After doing some research with Python's PyGame, I can see that a Gamepad essentially works like a Keyboard does by sending global key events to the entire system, and then the application reading those events. Question is, how can I make it not global? ONly have one application read one controller? Any help is appreciated!

  Hey guys, I am very new to linux, and amazon-ec2. I wanted to put a quick server. For some reason, when I sign in with my key pair, it prompts me for a username, I input ec2-user, and I'm in. The problem is that I don't have root access (and can't find the root password). I need to install screen to run the server in the background, and also create a new user, that doesn't have root, to run the server. Neither of which I can do without root.. Any help? • Access device with local ip over internet

  I apologize up front if this is the wrong place to post this question. It seemed like the best fit. I have a device which is connected to my local network which has an IP of 192.168.1.10 from my router. Additionally I use a Windows 7 machine that runs some software called DirectUpdate which allows me to resolve the local IP of the Windows 7 machine (192.168.1.5) to be accessible to the internet via my domain (example.com) - Basic dynamic DNS updating. I'd like to access the device from example.com. I am unsure how to do this as I don't have any way to install DirectUpdate (or any software) on the device to make the device available to the internet. Any insight here would be appreciated.   I'm trying to configure RAID in a IBM x3550 M2 server. I can't find any messages on boot about any hotkey to access the configuration utility. I wasn't able either in BIOS. The card is a on board LSI 1068e. I can't find the original CD's shipped with the server, but I downloaded Server Guide 9.21 from IBM web. Booted with that, and only getting stuck at "Windows loading"p. Tried with a 8.? version from a x3550 (M1), but it was less useful. Although I do not consider myself an expert, I'm starting to feel like a newbie luser. Any help?

And when I use browse function in IIS manager to browse the html file, I met with the following error, any ideas what is wrong? • SBS 2008 File access restrictions after 5:30PM

  Hi there, SBS 2008, I have an issue whereby a user can't access a file after 5:30PM. They get the message: "cannot be accessed. The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read only I've checked the logon hours on the AD User account in question and there's no restrictions there. I have noticed that the account in question does not appear in the SBS Console, only in ADUC which means the account wasn't added using the wizard. It's a long shot but would that make a difference? Other than that I'm pretty stumped, any suggestions welcomed. Thanks
