  • Multicasting and multicast address

    - by Zia ur Rahman
I have confusion about the multicast addresses, I have read an example which is given by. Suppose two applications have been built to send audio over a network. One application accepts and digitizes an audio input stream, and then sends the resulting frame across the network to other application. The second application receives the digitized audio from the network, converts it back to the audio signal and plays the result over a speaker. Unless the two applications use broadcast to send frames, no other computers on the network will receive a copy of the frame. Multicasting provides an excellent solution to the problems of allowing some computers to participate in audio transmission. To use multicasting , a multicast address must be chosen for the audio application. And the receiving application passes the multicast address to the network interface. The interface begins to accept the packets sent to that address. Question: how this multicast address is chosen, how the receiving application knows that the sender using this specific destination address for the audio frames.

  • Why is sql server giving a conversion error when submitting date.today to a datetime column?

    - by kpierce8
I am getting a conversion error every time I try to submit a date value to sql server. The column in sql server is a datetime and in vb I'm using Date.today to pass to my parameterized query. I keep getting a sql exception Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string. Here's the code Public Sub ResetOrder(ByVal connectionString As String) Dim strSQL As String Dim cn As New SqlConnection(connectionString) cn.Open() strSQL = "DELETE Tasks WHERE ProjID = @ProjectID" Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(strSQL, cn) cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("ProjectID", 5) cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() strSQL = "INSERT INTO Tasks (ProjID, DueDate, TaskName) VALUES " & _ " (@ProjID, @TaskName, @DueDate)" Dim cmd2 As New SqlCommand(strSQL, cn) cmd2.CommandText = strSQL cmd2.Parameters.AddWithValue("ProjID", 5) cmd2.Parameters.AddWithValue("DueDate", Date.Today) cmd2.Parameters.AddWithValue("TaskName", "bob") cmd2.ExecuteNonQuery() cn.Close() DataGridView1.DataSource = ds.Projects DataGridView2.DataSource = ds.Tasks End Sub Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the ISO C++ way to directly define a conversion function to reference to array?

    - by ben
According to the standard, a conversion function has a function-id operator conversion-type-id, which would look like, say, operator char(&)[4] I believe. But I cannot figure out where to put the function parameter list. gcc does not accept either of operator char(&())[4] or operator char(&)[4]() or anything I can think of. Now, gcc seems to accept (&operator char ())[4] but clang does not, and I am inclined to not either, since it does not seem to fit the grammar as I understand it. I do not want to use a typedef because I want to avoid polluting the namespace with it.

  • How would you measure conversion for an iPhone App Download?

    - by Eran Kampf
I want to test how users convert from my web page to downloading my iPhone app. Right now the best funnel I figured out was to go through a page that pings Google Analytics and then redirects to an iTunes link. But this funnel only measures conversion for users who got redirected to iTunes and not if they actually downloaded the app once they saw it in iTunes. Anyone knows of a way to measure conversion to the actual download? (I know this is not a coding question but still a problem a app developers would encounter trying to market their app)

  • Sound not working after installing PCI video card and then removing it

    - by bakhshu
I am running 11.10 on a HP/Compaq Presario sr1010z, and the video/audio was working fine with whatever was in the machine already. Then I installed a new video card (PCI/nVidia), which disabled the audio/video on the old one automatically. But that card didn't work out too well so I removed it. Now the video is back to normal, but the audio is gone. I have tried the following: 1. In BIOS, set audio to on/enable rather than Auto 2. Looked for hardware in System Settings Sound, but nothing shows up there 3. But when I run the sysinfo utility, I get the description of the audio controller When I do a 'sudo aplay -l', I get 'aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found...' And then when I do a 'lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio"' I get the following: 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS7012 AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2a05 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 5 I/O ports at a000 [size=256] I/O ports at a400 [size=128] Capabilities: 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f) (prog-if 10 [OHCI]) Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks

  • How to debug lack of sound in Asus EEE PC

    - by Kalmar
I have an Asus EEE PC 1225B with fresh Lubuntu 12.04. And no sound. It doesn't seem to be some common problem, so I have to make some research what's up. I tried running alsamixer, so I know I have Realtek ALC269VB with nothing muted unexpectedly. What can I do next to identify and solve the problem? Additional info: alsamixer shows two cards: HD-Audio Generic and HDA ATI-SB (Realtek ALC269VB); the first one is muted. ~$ aplay ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave aplay: main:682: blad otwierania audio: Nie ma takiego pliku ani katalogu The Polish part can be translated as "error opening audio: There is no such file or directory". ~$ sudo lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" 00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6250/6310] Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • Ubuntu sound volume is 40% lower than in Windows

    - by ncomx
I have 2x 2.1 speakers connected to the computer where I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed. On the software side I've set all the volume controls to 100% with the alsamixer program. The speakers have their own volume control, maintaining those at the same level, and switching between Ubuntu and Windows (XP and 7), on windows the output volume is at least 40% higher, even when having the windows volume control at 50% (without touching the speakers volume control) it's still much higher than the sound on Ubuntu. Why can this be happening? Are there some alternative sound drivers (other than the default ones) I could test to see if it makes a difference? some info about the card: root:$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH HDA Intel PCH at 0xfbff4000 irq 55 1 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic HD-Audio Generic at 0xfbcfc000 irq 56 root:$ lspci | grep -i audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) 02:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cayman/Antilles HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6900 Series] I think the one i am using is the Intel one, the other seems to be from the vga card which is an ati radeon 6950. Running gstreamer-properties and switching between alsa, oss, ossv4 and pulseaudio doesn't seem to make any difference.

  • loss of sound in ubuntu 12.04

    - by Leo Simon
I'm running Linux E6520 3.2.0-56-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 09:20:45 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a Dell Latitude E6530. (This is a new machine; have run the same version of linux on an older machine for a year, without this happening.) I've been losing sound regularly, though have not been able to isolate the trigger for this. I've scoured the web on this subject, in particular https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure and Audio stopped working suddenly in 12.04 Nothing from the first site seemed to work for me. From the second site, I learned enough to be able to fix the problem when it happens, but nothing on the web has helped me figure out why the problem is happening in the first place. Patching together stuff from the web, and with some blind luck, I've found that the following steps seem to restore sound pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start pavucontrol -> output devices Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which mutes audio Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which unmutes audio. This obviously doesn't make sense: audio wasn't muted in the first place, but somehow, magically, toggling mute audio off and on seems to reset something. Can anybody suggest from this information why sound would be disappearing in the first place (it seems as though something is getting muted at the system level, but I don't know what)? a simpler (command-line/script) way of restoring sound, in particular, is it possible to reset pavucontrol from the commandline? Some other pieces of information that may be of use: The problem is clearly happening at the system level, since I've set up a clean new user, and this user has the same problems that I do. So user fixes like deleting the .pulse directory aren't (and don't) help. Sound works fine in Windows (dual-boot) so it's not a hardware problem Any help/suggestions on this would be most appreciated.

  • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

    - by dtbarne
I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time? No - Crash Yes - Works, but in Display tab: DirectDraw Acceleration: Disabled Direct3D Acceleration: Not Available AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Available If I click "Run 64-bit DxDiag", all three are "Enabled". I should also note that I've tried the following steps as Microsoft suggests, but I'm not able to do so as the "Change Settings" button is disabled. Some programs run very slowly—or not at all—unless Microsoft DirectDraw or Direct3D hardware acceleration is turned on. To determine this, click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Acceleration appear as Enabled. If not, try turning on hardware acceleration. Click to open Screen Resolution. Click Advanced settings. Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full. • Will C++/CLI give me control over low-level devices like audio?

    - by schmoopy
I was wondering - how much limitation is there to C++/CLI compared to classic C++ (chuckle) - I was wanting to write an application that I cannot do with c# -- I was wanting to be able to connect to the PC's audio device and detect audio (for example) - Is this something I can do with C++/CLI? I have tried using NAudio with c#, but i have been able to do this. What other advantages would C++/CLI or C++ give me over c#?

  • ffmpeg 0.5 flv to wav conversion creates wav files that other programs won't open.

    - by superrebel
Hi, I am using the following command to convert FLV files to audio files to feed into julian, a speech to text program. cat ./jon2.flv | ffmpeg -i - -vn -acodec pcm_s16le -ar 16000 -ac 1 -f wav - | cat - > jon2.wav The cat's are there for debugging purposes as the final use will be a running program that will pipe FLV into ffmpeg's stdin and the stdout going to julian. The resulting wave files are identified by "file" as: jon3.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, mono 16000 Hz VLC (based on ffmpeg) plays the file, but no other tools will open/see the data. They show empty wav files or won't open/play. For example Sound Booth from CS4. Has anyone else had similar problems? Julian requires wav files 16bit mono at 16000 Hz. Julian does seem to read the file, but doesn't seem to go through the entire file (may be unrelated). Thanks, -rr

  • My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video - any ideas as to how I c

    - by Sam Meldrum
My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated?

  • Are there compact external USB audio interfaces which are better than a on-board sound?

    - by rumtscho
I am asking this for a friend. He loves his voice recognition software and dictates a lot of text using a headset. Now he has a new laptop, which only has a combined mic/headphones output, and wanted to buy an adapter. I told him to get an external USB sound interface instead, as the better sound quality will probably increase the hit rate of the voice recognition. He agreed, but when he saw a picture of the SoundBlaster X-Fi, he said that it is way too big, because he wants to carry the thing everywhere. He'd rather have one of these small things which are the size of a flash memory stick, with only one mic and one phones output, period. Now I am not sure whether these mini interfaces would produce a sound better than onboard sound. They all seem to come not from established audio interface manufacturers, but from electronic accessories manufacturers like Speedlink, or just noname brands. Is there a compact audio interface with good A/D quality (it is OK if the price is comparable to that of the bigger interfaces, even if there is no additional functionality like Chinch in-/output etc)?. And if there isn't, will the noname soundcardsticks offer any advantage over a simple adaptor for the onboard sound?

  • Strategy to use two different measurement systems in software

    - by Dennis
I have an application that needs to accept and output values in both US Custom Units and Metric system. Right now the conversion and input and output is a mess. You can only enter in US system, but you can choose the output to be US or Metric, and the code to do the conversions is everywhere. So I want to organize this and put together some simple rules. So I came up with this: Rules user can enter values in either US or Metric, and User Interface will take care of marking this properly All units internally will be stored as US, since the majority of the system already has most of the data stored like that and depends on this. It shouldn't matter I suppose as long as you don't mix unit. All output will be in US or Metric, depending on user selection/choice/preference. In theory this sounds great and seems like a solution. However, one little problem I came across is this: There is some data stored in code or in the database that already returns data like this: 4 x 13/16" screws, which means "four times screws". I need the to be in either US or Metric. Where exactly do I put the conversion code for doing the conversion for this unit? The above already mixing presentation and data, but the data for the field I need to populate is that whole string. I can certainly split it up into the number 4, the 13/16", and the " x " and the " screws", but the question remains... where do I put the conversion code? Different Locations for Conversion Routines 1) Right now the string is in a class where it's produced. I can put conversion code right into that class and it may be a good solution. Except then, I want to be consistent so I will be putting conversion procedures everywhere in the code at-data-source, or right after reading it from the database. The problem though is I think that my code will have to deal with two systems, all throughout the codebase after this, should I do this. 2) According to the rules, my idea was to put it in the view script, aka last change to modify it before it is shown to the user. And it may be the right thing to do, but then it strikes me it may not always be the best solution. (First, it complicates the view script a tad, second, I need to do more work on the data side to split things up more, or do extra parsing, such as in my case above). 3) Another solution is to do this somewhere in the data prep step before the view, aka somewhere in the middle, before the view, but after the data-source. This strikes me as messy and that could be the reason why my codebase is in such a mess right now. It seems that there is no best solution. What do I do?

  • OSS4 on Debian Squeeze

    - by mit
Hi, I am trying to get OSS4 to work on a Debian Squeeze 64 bit machine with an usb sound adapter. There is no sound from this adapter at the present, although it worked just before on the previous installation. You can see the output of some commands here: $ sudo /etc/init.d/oss4-base restart Stopping Open Sound System: SNDCTL_MIX_EXTINFO: No such device or address done. Starting Open Sound System: done (OSS is already loaded). $ sudo /etc/init.d/oss4-base stop Stopping Open Sound System: SNDCTL_MIX_EXTINFO: No such device or address done. $ sudo /etc/init.d/oss4-base start Starting Open Sound System: done (OSS is already loaded). $ ossinfo Version info: OSS 4.2 (b 2002/201001250441) (0x00040100) GPL Platform: Linux/x86_64 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Fri Dec 10 17:41:50 UTC 2010 (pc11) Number of audio devices: 2 Number of audio engines: 2 Number of MIDI devices: 0 Number of mixer devices: 2 Device objects 0: osscore0 OSS core services 1: oss_hdaudio0 ATI HD Audio interrupts=0 (613) HD Audio controller ATI HD Audio Vendor ID 0x10024383 Subvendor ID 0x10192816 Codec 0: Not present 2: oss_usb0 USB audio core services 3: usb0d8c0126-0 USB sound device 4: usb0d8c0126-1 USB sound device 5: usb0d8c0126-2 USB sound device 6: usb0d8c0126-3 USB sound device MIDI devices (/dev/midi*) Mixer devices 0: (USB sound device )(Mixer 0 of device object 3) 1: USB sound device (Mixer 0 of device object 5) Audio devices (USB sound device play /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-1/pcm0 ) (device index 0) USB sound device play /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-3/pcm0 (device index 1) Nodes /dev/dsp -> /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-1/pcm0 /dev/dsp_out -> /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-1/pcm0 /dev/dsp_mmap -> /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-1/pcm0 $ osstest Sound subsystem and version: OSS 4.2 (b 2002/201001250441) (0x00040100) Platform: Linux/x86_64 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Fri Dec 10 17:41:50 UTC 2010 *** Scanning sound adapter #-1 *** /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-1/pcm0 (audio engine 0): USB sound device play - Device not present - Skipping *** Scanning sound adapter #-1 *** /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-3/pcm0 (audio engine 1): USB sound device play - Performing audio playback test... /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-3/pcm0: No such file or directory Can't open the device *** Some errors were detected during the tests *** $ ossxmix /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-2/mix0: No such file or directory No mixers could be opened $ ossmix SNDCTL_MIX_EXTINFO: No such device or address ad@pc11:~$ man ossmix ad@pc11:~$ ossmix -a SNDCTL_MIX_EXTINFO: No such device or address ad@pc11:~$ man ossmix ad@pc11:~$ ossmix -D SNDCTL_MIX_EXTINFO: No such device or address ad@pc11:~$ ossmix -D 0 SNDCTL_MIX_EXTINFO: No such device or address ad@pc11:~$ man ossmix ad@pc11:~$ ossxmix /dev/oss/usb0d8c0126-2/mix0: No such file or directory No mixers could be opened How can I make oss sound work? • iOS 5.0 AVAudioPlayer Error loading audio clip: The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -50.)

    - by Jason Catudal
So I'm trying to test out the audio player on the iPhone, and I went off Troy Brant's iOS book. I have the Core Audio, Core Foundation, AudioToolbox, and AVFoundation frameworks added to my project. The error message I get is in the subject field. I read like 20 pages of Google search results before resorting to asking here! /sigh. Thanks if you can help. Here's my code, pretty much verbatim out of his book: NSString *soundFilePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"Yonah" ofType:@"caf"]; NSLog(@"%@", soundFilePath); NSURL *fileURL = [NSURL URLWithString:soundFilePath]; NSError *error; audioPlayer = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:fileURL error:&error]; if (!error) { audioPlayer.delegate = self; //audioPlayer.numberOfLoops = -1; [audioPlayer play]; } else { NSLog(@"Error loading audio clip: %@", [error localizedDescription]); } EDIT: Holy Shinto. I figured out what it was. I changed NSURL *fileURL = [NSURL URLWithString:soundFilePath]; to NSURL *fileURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:soundFilePath]; to the latter and I was getting a weird error, weirder than the one in the subject BUT I googled that and I changed my OS input device from my webcam to my internal microphone and guess what, it worked under the fileURLWithPath method. I'll be. Damned.

  • File Format Conversion to TIFF. Some issues???

    - by Nains
I'm having a proprietary image format SNG( a proprietary format) which is having a countinous array of Image data along with Image meta information in seperate HDR file. Now I need to convert this SNG format to a Standard TIFF 6.0 Format. So I studied the TIFF format i.e. about its Header, Image File Directories( IFD's) and Stripped Image Data. Now I have few concerns about this conversion. Please assist me. SNG Continous Data vs TIFF Stripped Data: Should I convert SNG Data to TIFF as a continous data in one Strip( data load/edit time problem?) OR make logical StripOffsets of the SNG Image data. SNG Data Header uses only necessary Meta Information, thus while converting the SNG to TIFF, some information can’t be retrieved such as NewSubFileType, Software Tag etc. So this raises a concern that after conversion whether any missing directory information such as NewSubFileType, Software Tag etc is necessary and sufficient condition for TIFF File. Encoding of each pixel component of RGB Sample in SNG data: Here each SNG Image Data Strip per Pixel component is encoded as: Out^[i] := round( LineBuffer^[i * 3] * **0.072169** + LineBuffer^[i * 3 + 1] * **0.715160** + LineBuffer^[i * 3+ 2]* **0.212671**); Only way I deduce from it is that each Pixel is represented with 3 RGB component and some coefficient is multiplied with each component to make the SNG Viewer work RGB color information of SNG Image Data. (Developer who earlier work on this left, now i am following the trace :)) Thus while converting this to TIFF, the decoding the same needs to be done. This raises a concern that the how RBG information in TIFF is produced, or better do we need this information?. Please assist...
