  • Ubuntu 12.04 appearance

    I have just updated my old Ubuntu 11.04 to the 12.04 version and I really dislike the new appearance. Is there anyway I can go back to the old appearance? Here are some examples of the things I would like to change: the omnipresent orange colour (for example, colour of the folders, colour of the little x on the top right of the window etc.); used to be blue. The icons on the right vertical bar are unreadable: the dropbox icon has become a light grey shapeless blob, the battery icon does not indicate, as it did before, when electricity is plugged in and when it isn't. everything is just grey and orange (I chose the Radiance theme, the other ones are even worse). There used to be a lot of options choosing the shape of the windows and so on, where has all that gone? Thanks for your help!

  • How can I use cron-apt to download and install updates between midnight and 5am?

    I have capped data which is essentially free between midnight and 5am. As a result, I would like to set Ubuntu to automatically download updates over that time. It seems that cron-apt is what I need, but the documentation and syntax is sketchy and unintuitive. Can anyone tell me how to use it to schedule downloads? It can install the updates at the same time as far as I'm concerned, but that's not such a big issue - I can run those at a later stage.

  • Bad sound quality and headphones not working

    Using Ubuntu 10.10, on a HP Pavilion t3019.es, which has a Realtek ALC880 soundcard. It has 6 rear jack outputs, plus digital audio input and output, plus 3 front jacks (mic, headphones and a blue one which i don't know what's for). The sound on my computer is very low, and when i raise the volume up to 50%, it starts sounding distorted, crackling. Also, the headphones don't work when i plug them (it just keeps on playing through the speakers). I tried to comment the "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" file according to the soundcard and jacks in my computer, but none of the lines added worked (naturally, didn't added them at once). I found out that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to it made the sound better, but it's not as good as in Windows yet. Any ideas? Other than setting the PCM value, didn't work for me.   • Libgdx change color of Texture at runtime [on hold]

    i allready asked this on Stackoverflow, but i think this question may belong here. In a Libgdx game i have some Animations for my Player. All the Frames for this Animation are inside a TextureAtlas. The Player Textures show a human, with a white T-Shirt. The T-Shirt is the only white part of the Player. Now i want to be able to replace the white color with red for Player1, with green for Player2 and so on. How can i do that, without loosing the advantage of the TextureAtlas (Texture switching)? Ofc 1 way would be to store 4 versions of every Frame, for 4 different Players (colors). But there are games out there, where you can fully customize the Player, give him a blue hat, red pants and pink shirts and so on. How can this be done? Thanks a lot!   • How do I change the software center icon in the launcher?

    I'm not a big fan of the Software Center icon (apparently I'm not the only one: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/09/software-centre-icon-proposal). Is there a way change it? The answers to this related question doesn't make it clear whether there is: How to change the Dash icon in the Unity Launcher? As far as I can see the Software Center icon isn't in nautilus /usr/share/unity/5/ so where could it be?

  • Should I create inner class here or leave as is?

    Folks, I have two separate classes. One of them makes http requests/receives response to/from a server and the second one converts received JSON objects into my models (separate classes). I'm thinking it would be an idea to include this class for data converting as an inner class of my first class. Wouldn't my first class be extra big because of it and I need to leave everything as is or this is a good common practice to behave like that?

  • Theme is broken in some places

    I am using a computer that started out on 11.10. I have since updated it several times, and installed and used a great number of WMs (Unity, XFCE, Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon). I am not sure how, but somewhere along the way (probably when I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04), some parts of my desktop theme were broken. I have tried switching themes and installing new themes, but that does not work. Neither did a removal of (and log out/login cycle) the ~/.config/dconf folder work. Specifically: on several menus, the central part of a button icon is a "grey square" that doesn't fit in with the theme (picture below). the window and desktop right click menus looks ugly. The same kind of grey field covers the items, and the square checkbox looks weird (just filled with a uniform blue). The separator is a thick line that looks out of place. It seems to be a similar problem to that of window buttons (picture below).

    I'm building a strange div shaped structure and I need a hint to resolve a clicking problem. This is a jsfiddle to show you the issue. The structure for each element is: <div class="views-row"> <div class="diamonds-container"> CONTENT </div> </div> I have a onclick() event on .diamonds-container but the .views-row div of the next element [with red or blue background..] go over the container and stop the click event on it. I tryed to play with the z-index but I didn't have the expected result. How can I achieve this structure with a correct click event on diamonds-containers ? I think I can track the .views-row click with javascript and trigger manually a click on the previous diamonds-container but this will be my final option. How can I achieve this without javascript?

    Let's say on an e-commerce site that sells unique pens, on a particular pen's product page, the image of the pen has an alt attribute value of "unique red-striped pen"... and another product has "unique blue-spotted pen", etc... The keywords across all products being "unique" and "pen", which would also be helpful when it comes to SEO. However, if the person just goes to the general "unique pens" category page and sees a list of thumbnail images, each with the words "unique" and "pen" in the alt attribute, would that potentially have a negative impact with regards to SEO by having the same keywords too many times?

  • Resize/Create a New Partition in GParted

    So I've been having some trouble recently with Ubuntu and decided it was time to switch to windows. But I have no ntfs partitions on my hard disk and GParted will not let me resize my one large partition (/dev/sda1) so that I can allocate some ntfs space to install windows on.   • Cant burn the iso file on disc and usb will not startup

    I am having very big problems trying to get this going for my old laptop. I tried burning the iso image with 5 different iso burning programs and none of the disks worked none started up. Then I tried to do the USB way used the program that puts it on the usb for you it starts up on my laptop fine but will not start up on my compaq presario 2178cl. If any1 can help me with this problem I would be much appreciative ty for your time.

    I am very new to this forum and also linux. I have managed to install wubi on my laptop fine and I can get on the net with ethernet, But when I try to download and install the wifi drivers it keeps giving me what I think is a generic var/ log error and just starts to hang on install then says it will not install. Can anyone help please as I really really want to move from windows and this is not helping me..A big thanks in advance :)
