• Linq to SQL generates StackOverflowException in tight Insert loop

  I'm parsing an XML file and inserting the rows into a table (and related tables) using LinqToSQL. I parse the XML file using LinqToXml into IEnumerable. Then, I create a foreach loop, where I build my LinqToSQL objects and call InsertOnSubmit and SubmitChanges at the end of each loop. Nothing special here. Usually, I make it through around 4,100 records before receiving a StackOverflowException from LinqToSql, right as I call SubmitChanges. It's not always on 4,100... sometimes it's 4102, sometimes, less, etc. I've tried inserting the records that generate the failure individually, but putting them in their own Xml file, but that inserts fine... so it's not the data. I'm running the whole process from an MVC2 app that is uploading the Xml file to the server. I've adjusted my WebRequest timeouts to appropriate values, and again, I'm not getting timeout errors, just StackOverflowExceptions. So is there some pattern that I should follow for times when I have to do many insertions into the database? I never encounter this exception on smaller Xml files, just larger ones.

  Im having a big xml tree with a simple structure. All I want to do is get a node by its attribute using xpath and loop the children. param1 - correct language param1 & param3 - correct node by its id and the parents id. (Need to use parent id when multiplie id appears. I having no problems looping the array returned by the xpath query. But when i try to loop childnodes all attributes are gone and many of the methods also.   I'm doing some simple javascript learning at the moment and I'm stuck on how to solve this problem. (the basic form comes from Code Academy). The task is to create 3 rabbit objects, each with a different adjective as an attribute. Then, print describeMyself() for each rabbit. Instead of repeating myself 3 times, I'd like to find a way to solve the problem with a for loop to make it more streamlined/challenging for myself.   I'm using a NetStream in Data Generation Mode to play an embeded FLV using appendBytes. When the stream is finished playing, I'd like to loop the FLV file. I'm not sure how to achieve this. If you just try to call appendBytes again after that, it doesn't work, presumably because I'm appending the full byte array which has the FLV header and stuff? I'm not very familiar with how that all works. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Foreach loop returning null values in PHP?

  Hello, I have a pretty simple problem. Basically I have an array called $list that is a list of titles. If I do a print_r($list) I get these results: Array ( [0] => Another New Title [1] => Awesome Movies and stuff [2] => Jascha's Title ) Now, I'm running a foreach loop to retrieve their values and format them in an <ul> like so... function get_film_list(){ global $categories; $list = $categories->get_film_list(); if(count($list)==0){ echo 'No films are in this category'; }else{ echo '<ul>'; foreach($list as $title){ echo '<li>' . $title . '<li>'; } echo '</ul>'; } } The problem I'm having is my loop is returning two values per value (is it the key value?) • NSOperation for animation loop causes strange scrolling behaviour

  Hi, I've created an animation loop which I run as an operation in order to keep the rest of my interface responsive. Whilst almost there, there is still one remaining issue. My UIScrollViews don't seem to be reliably picking up when a user touch ends. What this means is, for example, if a user drags down on a scroll view, when they lift their fingers the scrollview doesn't bounce back into place and the scrollbar remains visible. As if the finger hasn't left the screen. It takes another tap on the scrollview for it to snap to its correct position and the scrollbar to fade away...   I'm trying to write a parser for a simple markup language with happy. Currently, I'm having some issues with infinit loops and nested elements. My markup language basicly consists of two elements, one for "normal" text and one for bold/emphasized text. data Markup = MarkupText String | MarkupEmph [Markup] For example, a text like Foo *bar* should get parsed as [MarkupText "Foo ", MarkupEmph [MarkupText "bar"]]. Lexing of that example works fine, but the parsing it results in an infinite loop - and I can't see why. This is my current approach: -- The main parser: Parsing a list of "Markup" Markups :: { [Markup] } : Markups Markup { $1 ++ [$2] } | Markup { [$1] } -- One single markup element Markup :: { Markup } : '*' Markups1 '*' { MarkupEmph $2 } | Markup1 { $1 } -- The nested list inside *..* Markups1 :: { [Markup] } : Markups1 Markup1 { $1 ++ [$2] } | Markup1 { [$1] } -- Markup which is always available: Markup1 :: { Markup } : String { MarkupText $1 } What's wrong with that approach? • Parallel version of loop not faster than serial version

  I'm writing a program in C++ to perform a simulation of particular system. For each timestep, the biggest part of the execution is taking up by a single loop. Fortunately this is embarassingly parallel, so I decided to use Boost Threads to parallelize it (I'm running on a 2 core machine). I would expect at speedup close to 2 times the serial version, since there is no locking. However I am finding that there is no speedup at all. I implemented the parallel version of the loop as follows: Wake up the two threads (they are blocked on a barrier). Each thread then performs the following: Atomically fetch and increment a global counter. Retrieve the particle with that index. Perform the computation on that particle, storing the result in a separate array Wait on a job finished barrier The main thread waits on the job finished barrier. I used this approach since it should provide good load balancing (since each computation may take differing amounts of time). I am really curious as to what could possibly cause this slowdown. I always read that atomic variables are fast, but now I'm starting to wonder whether they have their performance costs. If anybody has some ideas what to look for or any hints I would really appreciate it. I've been bashing my head on it for a week, and profiling has not revealed much.

  Been trying to get my head around while loops for the last few days but the code seems very inefficient for what Im trying to achieve. I'm assuming I'm overcomplicating this though nothing I've tried seems to work. Each topic in my forum can have related topic IDs stored in a seperate table. A post ID is also stored in this table, as that specific post references why they are considered related.   I am trying to create a jQuery fadeIn fadeout effect for my page content using the code below. $(document).ready(function (){ $("#main").click(function(){ $("#content").fadeOut(800, function(){ $("#content").load("main.html", function(){ $("#content").fadeIn(800); }); }); }); $("#gallery").click(function(){ $("#content").fadeOut(800, function(){ $("#content").load("gallery.html", function(){ $("#content").fadeIn(800); }); }); }); }); So whenever a user clicks on either the main link or gallery link, the old content fades out and new content fades in. The problem I am facing is that for every link I have to repeat the same code again and again. So I tried to use a loop to simplify this but it doesn't work. • Why won't this loop normalize my Vector2 list?

Yet for some reason when I do this loop it doesn't normalize the vectors. Am I just unable to modify a list this way? Some oddities: Iterating with a for loop, i.e. axis[i].Normalize() doesn't work. Iterating with the built-in List<T>.ForEach iterator does not work. Creating a normalizing the vector before adding it to the list rather than iterating over the list does work. Why does iteration not work?

• PHP - Drilling down Data and Looping with Loops

  I'm currently having difficulty finding a way of making my loops work. I have a table of data with 15 minute values. I need the data to pull up in a few different increments $filters=Array('Yrs','Qtr','Day','60','30','15'); I think I have a way of finding out what I need to be able to drill down to but the issue I'm having is after the first loop to cycle through all the Outter most values (ex: the user says they want to display by Hours, each hour should be able to have a "+" that will then add a new div to display the half hour data, then each half hour data have a "+" to display the 15 minute data upon request. Now I can just program the number of outputs for each value (6 different outputs) just in-case... but isn't there a way I can make it do the drill down for each one in a loop? so I only have to code one output once and have it just check if there are any more intervals after it and check for those? I'm sure I'm just overlooking some very simple way of doing this but my brain isn't being clever today. Sorry in advance if this is a simple solution. I guess the best way I could think of it as a reply on a form. How you would check to see if it's a reply of a reply, and then if that reply has any replys...etc for output. Can anyone help or at least point me in the right direction? Or am I stuck coding each possible check? Thanks in advance!

Is it completely wrong to keep variables local in a loop whenever possible? I was under the (perhaps false) impression that this would provide optimization opportunities for the compiler. EDIT: I use VC++2005 (release mode) with full optimization (/Ox)

  Whenever the cursor move over the note, it would call getCollision() function to store the name of the sprite. Can store more than one sprite in array but the normalNote() function failed to work correctly? When I click a button which called normalNote(), it would only loop once (one note was redraw) before the pop. After the pop, it should have continue to loop until the rest of the notes from getChildbyname is redraw. • Getting a "for each" loop in Java to run in different order everytime

  Hi, Basically my problem is that I'm trying to write a method that finds a random path in a graph of strings, which takes as it's parameters a start string, an integer length and a Vector of strings that will store the path. I'm attempting to do this by first adding the starting string to our blank vector, recursing through its neighbors until the vector's length (not including the start node) is the same as the integer length specified in the parameters. I've provided my code so far here: public Vector<String> findRandomPathFrom(String n, int len, Vector<String> randomPath){ randomPath.add(n); if (randomPath.size() == len + 1) return randomPath; for (String m : this.neighbours(n)){ if (!randomPath.contains(m) && findRandomPathFrom(m, len, randomPath) != null) return randomPath; } path.setSize(path.size() - 1); return null; } It seems to be working fine, returning a path with exactly the number of strings specified after the given start string. However, for any given starting string it generates the EXACT same path everytime, which kind of defeats the purpose of it being a random path generator. I'm guessing this problem is related to my "for each" loop, which loops through all the neighbouring strings of your current string. It seems to just be going with the first string in the neighbours vector every single time.   I have this function, which is doing an asynchronous call to FB.api method. Now, i am looping over some data and capturing result of the above method call successfully. However, I am using a .each loop and I really can not figure out how to place my callback in this method, so that the outer method is only executed once. • Weird code appearing when I loop over model instances in Rails

  In my Rails app I'm trying to loop over the Submission instances inside my Folder instances with Rails templating code. It works. However, it's also returning each instance in code which doesn't seem to be JSON. It's what's returned when you look up an instance in the Rails console. Here's an example: #<Submission id: 112, title: nil, content: nil, created_at: "2013-10-10 23:29:39", updated_at: "2013-10-10 23:29:39", user_id: 1, folder_id: 1, parent_id: nil> Here's what the code looks like for the loop: <%= @folder.submissions.each do |x| %> <% if x.title != nil %> <div id="<%= x.id %>" class="submission-textual"> <h1><%= x.title %></h1> </div> <% else %> <% end %> <% end %> I checked my Folder and Submissions controllers but am not sure what this is. Why are these strings being rendered whenever I try and render an instance in my view? I'm still new to Ruby so that explains why I haven't seen this.

• How can I optimize this loop?

  I've got a piece of code that returns a super-long string that represents "search results". Each result is represented by a double HTML break symbol. For example: Result1<br><br>Result 2<br><br>Result3 I've got the following loop that takes each result and puts it into an array, stripping out the break indicator, "kBreakIndicator" (<br><br>). The problem is that this lopp takes way too long to execute. With a few results it's fine, but once you hit a hundred results, it's about 20-30 seconds slower. It's unacceptable performance. What can I do to improve performance? Here's my code: content is the original NSString. • Pulling $_GET data and creating multidimensional array using loop

  I'm creating a checkout for customers and the data about what's in their cart is being sent to a page (for just now) via $_GET. I want to extract that data and then populate a multidimensional array with it using a loop. Here's how I'm naming the data: $itemCount = $_GET['itemCount']; $i = 1; while ($i <= $itemCount) { ${'item_name_'.$i} = $_GET["item_name_{$i}"]; ${'item_quantity_'.$i} = $_GET["item_quantity_{$i}"]; ${'item_price_'.$i} = $_GET["item_price_{$i}"]; //echo "<br />Name: " .${'item_name_'.$i}. " - Price: ".${'item_price_'.$i}; $i++; } From here I'd like to create a multidimensional array like such: Array ( [Item_1] => Array ( [item_name] => Shoe [item_quantity] => 2 [item_price] => 40.00 ) [Item_2] => Array ( [item_name] => Bag [item_quantity] => 1 [item_price] => 60.00 ) [Item_3] => Array ( [item_name] => Parrot [item_quantity] => 4 [item_price] => 90.00 ) . . . ) What I'd like to know is if there is a way I can create this array in the existing while loop? I'm aware of being able to add data to an array like $data = [] after delacring an empty array but the actual syntax eludes me.   I'd like something like this: ForEach[i_, {1,2,3}, Print[i] ] Or, more generally, to destructure arbitrary stuff in the list you're looping over, like: ForEach[{i_, j_}, {{1,10}, {2,20}, {3,30}}, Print[i*j] ] (Meta-question: is that a good way to call a ForEach loop, with the first argument a pattern like that?) ADDED: Some answerers have rightly pointed out that usually you want to use Map or other purely functional constructs and eschew a non-functional programming style where you use side effects. I agree! But here's an example where I think this ForEach construct is supremely useful: Say I have a list of options (rules) that pair symbols with expressions, like attrVals = {a -> 7, b -> 8, c -> 9} Now I want to make a hash table where I do the obvious mapping of those symbols to those numbers. I don't think there's a cleaner way to do that than ForEach[a_ -> v_, attrVals, h[a] = v] ADDED: I just realized that to do ForEach properly, it should support Break[] and Continue[]. I'm not sure how to implement that. Perhaps it will need to somehow be implemented in terms of For, While, or Do since those are the only loop constructs that support Break[] and Continue[]. If anyone interested in this wants to ask about that as a separate question, please do!
