• Radius of multiple latitude/longitude points

  I have a program that takes as input an array of lat/long points. I need to perform a check on that array to ensure that all of the points are within a certain radius. So, for example, the maximum radius I will allow is 100 miles. Given an array of lat/long (coming from a MySQL database, could be 10 points could be 10000) I need to figure out if they will all fit in a circle with radius of 100 miles. Kinda stumped on how to approach this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I work on a development team that works closely with Product Managers. There is mutual agreement between the developers and Product Managers that there should be a business case behind every feature the development team builds. My question is, what is an effective way to make a business case for platform-level features that have higher up front cost but will provide long term benefits? For example, the development team would like to implement a plug-in framework. There is the higher up-front cost to implement a plug-in framework but delivering the subsequent features as plug-ins will be cheaper in the long run. This is obvious to everyone including the Product Managers. Is there a standard/simple way to express the cost-benefits? Is there a simple way to visualize it with a graph?

• Does program need additional symbols from .so shared library except those declared in header file?

  In C programming, I thought that a object file can be successfully linked with a .so file as long as the .so file offers all symbols which have been declared in the header file. Suppose I have foo.c, bar.h and two libraries libbar.so.1 and libbar.so.2. The implementation of libbar.so.1 and libbar.so.2 is totally different, but I think it's OK as long as they both offers functions declared in bar.h. I linked foo.o with libbar.so.1 and produced an executable: foo.bin. This executable worked when libbar.so.1 is in LD_LIBRARY_PATH.(of course a symbolic link is made as libbar.so) However, when I change the symbolic link to libbar.so.2, foo.bin could not run and complainted this: undefined symbol: _ZSt4cerr I found this symbol type is 'B' and it does not appear in libbar.so.2. Obviously this symbol has nothing to do with those functions I decared in bar.h. What's wrong here?

• Processing large recordsets in Rails

  Hello, I'm trying to perform a daily operation on a larger than normal dataset (2m+ records). However, Rails seems to take a very long time performing operations on such a dataset. Operations like Dataset.all.each do |data| ... end take a very long time to complete (I assume this is because it can't fit all the items into memory at once, right?). Does anyone have any strategies on how I could handle this situation? I know SQL would probably speed up the process, but I'm looking to use the Rails environment as I can do many more complicated things to the data than I can with just SQL statements.

• Either .each do or .all isn't working how I think it should

  So whenever someone rates a shop, I want the Shop model to calculate its new average rating and store that in the database (instead of calculating the average every time someone looks at it). So I wrote the segment of code that follows, and it doesn't work. The loop always iterates exactly once, no matter how many shop_ratings in the database exist that have the shop's id as their shop_id. I played around with it a bit and found that every time a new rating is submitted the function is called successfully, but it only runs the loop once and sets the average to what the first rating was. • PHP Get images from a UL list

  I have a long UL list and each LI contains an image tag, dynamically generated from SLideshowPro Director. I need to get the widths of ALL the images inside the UL to use in a CSS width calculation. I have been able to get the image width for the first item, but not all. My PHP is pretty limited, but do I have to make this list into an ARRAY first to allow me to get all the widths? And how do i do that?? These images contain very long id's generated by the CMS, so reading through a directory is not possible, as the images in cache bare not relation to the file names that are output to the HTML page. It has to all be done from the content that's sent to the page. Or could I even use JQuery to do this??

• The risk of granting to IUSR* NTFS permissions on a folder on the server

  I have two web applications that must share a file in the server file system. Both apps are inside of "Inetpub\wwwroot". The file cannot be accessed freely from outside, so it is in a folder out of "Inetpub". I have granted full NTFS permissions to the user "IUSR_whatever" (is the user that runs IIS in anonymous requests) in that folder. The folder has only that file, and has no other use. It works so far :) But, what is the risk? what should I be afraid of? As I see it, as long the folder is out of the "InetPub" cannot be accessed, and as long the apps don't have any security flaw like "path traversal" or server side code injection, it should be safe enough.... But I'm always keen to be wrong :) What do you think? May the file or even the server itself get compromised because of this? Thanks.

• I am using jquery ajax using text() but any html written in the XML doesn't render?

  So I have Jquery Ajax working real nice, but an issue I am having is in my XML if I want to bold a work or Italicize a sentence, if I do it in the XML using HTML tags it will not show up. I am pretty sure it is due to using the .text().   Hi, I wrote a long table with a label in a tex file and \input it into my main tex file. The reference in the main tex file to the table, however, does not show the numbering of the table but the one of the next table that are written directly in the main tex file. All long tables that are written directly in the main tex file have correct references. How to fix my problem? Must the label be defined in the same tex file as its reference? Thanks and regards! The label is \label{tab:yy}, and the reference is \ref{tab:yy}, and every table has a distinct label.

• Messing with the stack in assembly and c++

  I want to do the following: I have a function that is not mine (it really doesn't matter here but just to say that I don't have control over it) and that I want to patch so that it calls a function of mine, preserving the arguments list (jumping is not an option). What I'm trying to do is, to put the stack pointer as it was before that function is called and then call mine (like going back and do again the same thing but with a different function). This doesn't work straight because the stack becomes messed up. I believe that when I do the call it replaces the return address. So, I did a step to preserve the return address saving it in a globally variable and it works but this is not ok because I want it to resist to recursitivy and you know what I mean. Anyway, i'm a newbie in assembly so that's why I'm here. Please, don't tell me about already made software to do this because I want to make things my way. Of course, this code has to be compiler and optimization independent. • Is it possible with dynamic TSQL query ?

  I have very long select query which i need to filter based on some params, i'm trying to avoid having different stored procedures or if statements inside of single stored procedure by using partly dynamic TSQL... I will avoid long select just for example sake select a from b where c=@c or d=@d @c and @d are filter params, only one can filter at the same time but also both filters could be disabled. 0 for each of these means param is disables so i can create nvarchar with where statement in it... How do i integrate in here dynamic query so 'where' can be added to normal query. I cannot add all the query as big nvarchar because there is too many things in it which will require changes ( ie. when's, subqueries, joins)

  I want to use swig for generation of read-only wrappers for a complex object. The object which I want to wrap will always be existent while I will read it. And also I will only use my wrappers at the time that object is existent, thus I don't need any memory management from SWIG.
