I found a way to change the name without recreating all your settings. It uses the built in administration commands in IIS7, called appcmd.   • Visualising data a different way with Pivot collections

    Roger’s been doing a great job extending PivotViewer recently, and you can find the list of LobsterPot pivots at http://pivot.lobsterpot.com.au Many months back, the TED Talk that Gary Flake did about Pivot caught my imagination, and I did some research into it. At the time, most of what we did with Pivot was geared towards what we could do for clients, including making Pivot collections based on students at a school, and using it to browse PDF invoices by their various properties. We had actual commercial work based on Pivot collections back then, and it was all kinds of fun. Later, we made some collections for events that were happening, and even got featured in the TechEd Australia keynote. But I’m getting ahead of myself... let me explain the concept. A Pivot collection is an XML file (with .cxml extension) which lists Items, each linking to an image that’s stored in a Deep Zoom format (this means that it contains tiles like Bing Maps, so that the browser can request only the ones of interest according to the zoom level). This collection can be shown in a Silverlight application that uses the PivotViewer control, or in the Pivot Browser that’s available from getpivot.com. Filtering and sorting the items according to their facets (attributes, such as size, age, category, etc), the PivotViewer rearranges the way that these are shown in a very dynamic way. To quote Gary Flake, this lets us “see patterns which are otherwise hidden”. This browsing mechanism is very suited to a number of different methods, because it’s just that – browsing. It’s not searching, it’s more akin to window-shopping than doing an internet search. When we decided to put something together for the conferences such as TechEd Australia 2010 and the PASS Summit 2010, we did some screen-scraping to provide a different view of data that was already available online. Nick Hodge and Michael Kordahi from Microsoft liked the idea a lot, and after a bit of tweaking, we produced one that Michael used in the TechEd Australia keynote to show the variety of talks on offer. It’s interesting to see a pattern in this data: The Office track has the most sessions, but if the Interactive Sessions and Instructor-Led Labs are removed, it drops down to only the sixth most popular track, with Cloud Computing taking over. This is something which just isn’t obvious when you look an ordinary search tool. You get a much better feel for the data when moving around it like this. The more observant amongst you will have noticed some difference in the collection that Michael is demonstrating in the picture above with the screenshots I’ve shown. That’s because it’s been extended some more. At the SQLBits conference in the UK this year, I had some interesting discussions with the guys from Xpert360, particularly Phil Carter, who I’d met in 2009 at an earlier SQLBits conference. They had got around to producing a Pivot collection based on the SQLBits data, which we had been planning to do but ran out of time. We discussed some of ways that Pivot could be used, including the ways that my old friend Howard Dierking had extended it for the MSDN Magazine. I’m not suggesting I influenced Xpert360 at all, but they certainly inspired us with some of their posts on the matter So with LobsterPot guys David Gardiner and Roger Noble both having dabbled in Pivot collections (and Dave doing some for clients), I set Roger to work on extending it some more. He’s used various events and so on to be able to make an environment that allows us to do quick deployment of new collections, as well as showing the data in a grid view which behaves as if it were simply a third view of the data (the other two being the array of images and the ‘histogram’ view). I see PivotViewer as being a significant step in data visualisation – so much so that I feature it when I deliver talks on Spatial Data Visualisation methods. Any time when there is information that can be conveyed through an image, you have to ask yourself how best to show that image, and whether that image is the focal point. For Spatial data, the image is most often a map, and the map becomes the central mode for navigation. I show Pivot with postcode areas, since I can browse the postcodes based on their data, and many of the images are recognisable (to locals of South Australia). Naturally, the images could link through to the map itself, and so on, but generally people think of Spatial data in terms of navigating a map, which doesn’t always gel with the information you’re trying to extract. Roger’s even looking into ways to hook PivotViewer into the Bing Maps API, in a similar way to the Deep Earth project, displaying different levels of map detail according to how ‘zoomed in’ the images are. Some of the work that Dave did with one of the schools was generating the Deep Zoom tiles “on the fly”, based on images stored in a database, and Roger has produced a collection which uses images from flickr, that lets you move from one search term to another. Pulling the images down from flickr.com isn’t particularly ideal from a performance aspect, and flickr doesn’t store images in a small-enough format to really lend itself to this use, but you might agree that it’s an interesting concept which compares nicely to using Maps. I’m looking forward to future versions of the PivotViewer control, and hope they provide many more events that can be used, and even more hooks into it. Naturally, LobsterPot could help provide your business with a PivotViewer experience, but you can probably do a lot of it yourself too.   • I upgraded from win 7 to ubuntu 12.04 and know my html codes dont work

    Hello i just started using Ubuntu the other day i never used Linux or anything else besides windows before. I started learning HTML on windows 7 before switching to Ubuntu and know my HTML images are not working even after i made new images on Ubuntu and put the correct path and made sure the images are .png. After all that the site does not load the new images and the coeds are just fine i put my HTML files on cloud storage before switching to Ubuntu so its not the codes. Also i am using Mozilla Fire Fox.

  • Ghost Image - windows asks for activation on when deployed to VM

    I have several images created with Ghost Solution Suite (v11 I believe), the images have been in use for a few years now, but I am finally to the point where I have enough time to attempt to virtualize them for easier updates. I am running VMWare and attempting to image the virtual machines with my ghost image files. For my images I am running sysprep with minisetup and using reseal. The image deploys successfully, however when I start the VM for the first time, it demands windows activation. This doesn't happen when I image a physical computer, even a different model with different hardware. The idea of virtualizing my images becomes rather worthless if I am unable to deploy the images without having to activate every time (especially as Microsoft keeps declaring our volume licence key as invalid for activations). Does anyone know why it is asking for activation on a virtual machine, but not a physical PC? How can I prevent this?

    I'm looking at some methods to browse the web, in situations where bandwidth is scarce (such as, flaky wifi connection, or mobile phone internet provider who overcharges the bandwidth). One thing that would save alot of bandwidth is not downloading images while browsing. This approach has two main drawbacks Sometimes a site's layout depends of images. There are some images you wish to see (thus disabling images downloading through firefox settings is not quite convenient). I'm looking therefor for a method that would allow me to Use some heuristic to find out which images are related to the website layout and allow them to be downloaded. Select a particular image from a website, download and display it. Maybe there's a firefox extension for that?

  • Preventing adult content in a forum

    I'm working on a forum that allows images attached to the posts and doesn't require registration. Thing is, I'd like to provide a work-safe navigation option in which the posts with porn images attached aren't shown. The ideas I've come up with are: Making the work-safe option the default and treating all posts with images attached as pornographic, and making them visible only if the user "unchecks" it. Making all posts with images attached not work-safe by default and changing their status to work-safe only after a moderator approved it. Only then they would be visible if the user has the "work-safe" option checked. Does anyone else have an idea? Also, how the big web services deal with this? (YouTube, CraigsList, even StackExchange). By the way, I don't think that "nudity detector" libraries are accurate and they give plenty of false positives and negatives. Thanks!

    Hi all, I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance!   • Bootstrap 3.0.0: How to use data-slide-to outside of indicators?

    I am attempting to make a small gallery like the one shown below - I'm sure you've all seen them considering they are fairly common. When trying to make one using bootstrap I ran into a major problem. I can't seem to link the smaller bottom images to the larger top one that was when one of the smaller ones is clicked it changes to the selected image. I am attempting to use data-slide-to however it does not seem to work outside of the "carousel-indicators". I can't put it into the carousel indicators list because that moves the images up into the gallery (It may be possible to fix this with CSS but my attempts have been worthless). Does anyone know the problem? I've tried tags around each image that didn't seem to work then I tried divs. Still nothing. Things to note: I am using 3.0.0 All images are generated (if you haven't guessed already) Smaller images are separate from larger one (not auto scaled down)

    So I am playing around with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I have created a site layout, and have used the slice function on it. Next, I saved as html & images. In Dreamweaver, I open such html file and I fill the page with content, links, etc. I have a website and everything, and I would like to use my newly created html page on it. But, obviously, if I copy & paste the html to my website it won't work because it will lack the images. But two things: I can't find the images, and apparently they are a lot. I am sure I am doing a great mistake regarding the images. Can someone help me?

  • Calculated Fields - Idiosyncracies

Good Luck – You’ll need it! Calculated Fields are a sophisticated OOB feature of SharePoint, so you could think that they are best left to the end users – at least to the power users. But they reach their limits before the “Professionals “do, and the tough ones come back to us anyway. Back to business; the simpler the formula, the easier it is. Still, use your favorite editor to write it, then cut it and paste it to the ridiculously small window. What about complex formulae? Write them in steps! Here is a case in point and an idiosyncrasy or two. Our welders need to be certified and recertified every two years. Some of them are certifiable…., but I digress. To be certified you need to pass an eye exam, and two more tests – test A and test B. for each of those you have an expiry date. When renewed, each expiry date is advanced by two years from the date of renewal. My users wanted a visual clue so that when the supervisor looks at the list, she’ll have a KPI symbol telling her if anything expired (Red), is going to expire within the next 90 days (Yellow) or is not to be worried about (green). Not all the dates are filled and any blank date implies a complete lack of certification in the particular requirement. Obviously, I needed to figure the minimal of these 3 dates – a simple enough formula: =MIN([Date_EyeExam], {Date_TestA], [Date_TestB]). Aha! Here is idiosyncrasy #1. When one of the dates is a null, MIN(Date1, Date2) returns the non null date. Null is construed as “Far, far away”. The funny thing is that when you compare it to Today, the null is the lesser one. So a null it is less than today, but not when MIN is calculated. Now, to me the fact that the welder does not have an exam date, is synonymous with his exam being prehistoric, or at least past due. So here is what I did: Solution: Let’s set a blank date to 1/1/1800. How will we do that? Use the IF. IF([Field] rel relValue, TrueValue, FalseValue). rel is any relationship operator <, >, <=, >=, =, <>. If the field is related to the relValue as prescribed, the “IF” returns the TrueValue, otherwise it returns the FalseValue. Thus: =IF([SomeDate]="",1/1/1800,[SomeDate]) will return 1/1/1800 if the date is blank and the date itself if not. So, using this formula, if the welder missed an exam, the returned exam date will be far in the past. It would be nice if we could take such a formula and make it into a reusable function. Alas, here is a calculated field serious shortcoming: You cannot write subs and functions!! Aha, but we can use interim calculated fields! So let’s create 3 calculated fields as follows: 1: c_DateTestA as a calculated field of the date type, with the formula:  IF([Date_TestA]="",1/1/1800,[Date_TestA]) 2: c_DateTestB as a calculated field of the date type, with the formula:  IF([Date_TestB]="",1/1/1800,[Date_TestB]) 3: c_DateEyeExam as a calculated field of the date type, with the formula:  IF([Date_EyeExam]="",1/1/1800,[Date_EyeExam]) And now use these to get c_MinDate. This is again a calculated field of type date with the formula: MIN(c_DateTestA, cDateTestB, c_DateEyeExam) Note that I missed the square parentheses. In “properly named fields – where there are no embedded spaces, we don’t need the square parentheses. I actually strongly recommend using underscores in place of spaces in all the field names in your lists. Among other things, it makes using CAML much simpler. Now, we still need to apply the KPI to this minimal date. I am going to use the available KPI graphics that come with SharePoint and are always available in your 12 hive. "/_layouts/images/kpidefault-2.gif" is the Red KPI "/_layouts/images/kpidefault-1.gif" is the Yellow KPI "/_layouts/images/kpidefault-0.gif" is the Green KPI And here is the nested IF formula that will do the trick: =IF(c_MinDate<=Today,"/_layouts/images/kpidefault-2.gif", IF(cMinDate<Today+90,"/_layouts/images/kpidefault-1.gif","/_layouts/images/kpidefault-0.gif")) Nice! BUT when I tested, it did not work! This is Idiosyncrasy #2: A calculated field based on a calculated field based on a calculated field does not work. You have to stop at two levels! Back to the drawing board: We have to reduce by one level. How? We’ll eliminate the c_DateX items in the formula and replace them with the proper IF formulae. Notice that this needs to be done with precision. You are much better off in doing it in your favorite line editor, than inside the cramped space that SharePoint gives you. So here is the result: MIN(IF([Date_TestA]="",1/1/1800,[ Date_TestA]), IF([Date_TestB]="",1/1/1800,[ Date_TestB]), 1/1/1800), IF([Date_EyeExam]="",1/1/1800,[Date_EyeExam])) Note that I bolded the parentheses and painted them red. They have to match for this formula to work. Now we can leave the KPI formula as is and test again. This time with SUCCESS! Conclusion: build the inner functions first, and then embed them inside the outer formulae. Do this as long as necessary. Use your favorite line editor. Limit yourself to 2 levels. That’s all folks! Almost! As soon as I finished doing all of the above, my users added yet another level of complexity. They added another test, a test that must be passed, but never expires and asked for yet another KPI, this time in Black to denote that any test is not just past due, but altogether missing. I just finished this. Let’s hope it ends here! And OH, the formula  =IF(c_MinDate<=Today,"/_layouts/images/kpidefault-2.gif",IF(cMinDate<Today+90,"/_layouts/images/kpidefault-1.gif","/_layouts/images/kpidefault-0.gif")) Deals with “Today” and this is a subject deserving a discussion of its own!  That’s all folks?!   • Converting a .bat executable to Mac

    I need some help converting a .bat executable file that I run on our PC at my job so that it works on a mac. Before we upload tar files to our website we run this script which to the best of my knowledge simply unlocks all of the permissions to the tar and all the images within. If someone could help me in "translating" it to run on my Mac that would be awesome!   • Image hotlinking providers?

    I use a lot of images in my wordpress and due to hosting restrictions I need to host the images somewhere else and hotlink them in my blog posts. So I am looking for some reliable image host which provides free hotlinking service. The Google Picasa would be best, but I think they do not allow hotlinking. PS. I'm not looking for hosts like tinypic or imgshack, I'm looking for some websites which provides powerful features to oranize images (eg. albums etc).

  • auspex LFS backups

    I have some backup tapes which existed on an AUSPEX file server. The backups were written to tape with the SunOs version of the CPIO command. Now that I need to restore them, (of course there are no more auspex servers in existance), the backups won't restore because the headers are not standard. I have dumped the tape images to disk. PAX, CPIO, and TAR cannot read the images. I've tried all of the CPIO format options. The errors I get are "name too long", "byte swapped in header", or just junk output. I can open up the images and read the contents of the files, but cannot restore the images. I have found that SunOs had a special header in CPIO V2.5 images. I have found the source for cpio, now I need definition of the SunOs header inside CPIO?

  • Robots meta tag with "noimageindex"

    I have some doubt regarding noimageindex value in meta robots tag. If I add this tag on my page say http://www.example.com/somepage/someaction.php and on that page the images are served from another page say http://www.exampleimg.com. Then will the tag has meaning. I mean to say will the images will be ignored by bots? Or exampleimg is not affected by that tag. And all images will be indexed? Note: We want to stop indexing of the images on that particular page.

  • How can i add more wallpapers in 11.10?

    How do I increase the amount of wallpapers that appear on the menu for customizing the desktop with my backgrounds in 11.10? I added more images to the respective folder in /usr/share/background as root, but the list does not remain persistent. The images in 11:10 changes alone. So I want to add funds to enhance the environment. When I copy the images to the folder /usr/share/backgrounds the list is updated and increased. But only for the first time. Thereafter, the system ignores the other images, and the list of funds has become original as first. Any help?

  • 2D Image Creator for a video game

    I need to make a few images for an arcade video game I'm making in Java. As of right now, I have drawings that animate, but there are two problems. The drawings are horrible, and as a result, the game won't get enough attention. It's a pain to have to change each coordinate for the drawing, as the drawings are fairly complex. I'd like to use images. I feel they could solve my problem. They would look better than the drawings, and it would only have an x and a y coordinate, rather than the many coordinates I need for each drawing. So, in a sense, I have two questions. Would images actually help? Would they solve my 2 problems? I just want to clarify. How would I make these images. I don't think I can copy them off of the internet because I plan on publishing this game. So, is there any software where you can make your own images? (It has to be in an image type that Java can support. I'm working with java). It also, as stated by the header, needs to be a 2D image; not 3D
