  • Rails creating a new session every page view

    Hi everyone, I'm following the Agile RoR book somewhat to apply it to a project for school. It's going good until I get to sessions. I continually get Authenticity Invalid Tokens and when I look at my sessions table in the database, there's a new session being created every time I refresh the page. Is that right or is something messed up? Thanks.

  • Ruby does 'elseif' still exist

    I'm just learning ROR and I came across the if / else statements. I also came across 'elseif' but my text editor (textmate) doesn't pick it up as a keyword, not does the program run properly. if name == 'Chris' puts 'What a lovely name.' elseif name == 'Katy' puts 'What a lovely name!' end I'm using the book, Learn to Program, which was written several years ago. I was wondering if the 'elseif' was changed because when I simply use 'else' it seems to function properly

  • SVN: Branches for Every Little Change?

    Hi. We have a client (who has a client, who has a client) who is driving us mad with change requests to a code base (in PHP). Our first response was to just work in a main trunk in SVN, but the client often comes back and requests that a certain change needs to get pushed to the live servers ASAP. On the other hand, other changes get reduced in priority suddenly, which originally came grouped with other changes (seemingly). We are thinking of using a branch for every change request. Is this mad? What other solutions might work? Thanks! Edit: This is a really hard question to choose the correct answer for. Thanks to everybody for your great answers. Edit: I know that the best answer I chose was not particularly popular. I too wanted to find a technical solution to this problem. But now I think that if the client wants software with features that can be deployed in a modular fashion... this problem should not be solved in our use of the version control system. It would have to be designed into the software. Edit: Now it's almost a month later and my coworker/client has convinced me that multiple branches is the way to go. This is not just due to the client's insanity, but also based on our need to be able to determine if a feature is "ready to go" or "needs more work" or whatever. I don't have the SVN with me, but we merge using the advice from the SVN Cookbook: you merge the branch from the revision it was branched to the head revision. Also, using this system, we merge all branches at some point and that becomes the new QA and then live build. Then we branch from that. Last Edit (Perhaps): Months later, this system is still working out for us. We create branches for every ticket and rarely have problems. On the other hand, we do try to keep things separate as far as what people are working on... Two Years Later: We use GIT now, and now this system is actually quite reasonable.

  • Facebook Like not Pulling Title

    I am having some issues with the new facebook like button. It shows up fine, however for some reason it's not pulling the title of the page. I have the and I am using og:title, all are filled in, when I view the source of the iframe created on the load of he button, the in there is blank. I am also trying to put the tweetmeme and that's seeing that title and not the meta, or the normal page title.   • Why do techs recommend YUM installs yet repositories and providers are ages behind?

    I have been reading page after page after page about the benefits of using YUM package installer and how NOBODY should built installs from source files (which again makes no sense to me) yet the repositories and source builders always package files in Tarball format, leaving a TON of work (which usually ends up going wrong) to the individual instead of formatting SRPMs for the end user. Has the world gone mad? I feel like I am taking crazy pills!

  • How to let users post links/images to Facebook, Twitter, Buzz etc... from a Rails based website?

    I'd like to offer users the ability to post images / links to articles from my web application to Facebook, Twitter, Buzz and any other social network. A perfect example of the functionality I'm trying to replicate is mashable.com ... where each social network is represented by an icon that a) shows the number of shares AND b) allows users to click on it to post to that specific network.     In Symfony i just have to create models with ORM Designer and export it to symfony as a schema.yml and then use a symfony command to create tables, models and forms. I wonder if there is an equivalent to the RoR so that you dont have to create models manually by hand? It saves a lot of time using GUI for this kind of tasks and it is less error-prone. thanks

  • Why does FastCGI not work well with Ruby on Rails?

    It is said that FastCGI doesn't work well with Ruby on Rails deployment. Why is that? In previous experience, something either works quite well or it might be fundamentally wrong. So if FastCGI is a viable solution, why is it not reliable with RoR? Does FastCGI work well with most any language / frameworks?
