• Canon MP495 Scanner not working

  Running 12.04, installed and updated latest drivers for MP495 but nothing stil. latest drivers provided here: https://code.launchpad.net/~michael-gruz/+archive/canon-trunk/+packages Followed this guide to the letter: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1602839&page=11 Xsane and simple scan do not work. I have tried various other programs and have nothing... People are saying it works well with 11.10, so I don't know what the deal is with 12.04. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need this printer for my out-of-home business, and I really don't want to switch back windows just for a freaking scanner to function. Why don't these companies realise ubuntu users need to print things too?!

On this panel this year we had Michael Wells from Raymond James, Joy Mathew and Venki Govindarajan from Comcast, and Serkan Karatas from Turk Telekom. Our panelists have a great mix of experiences and all are passionate about using Oracle Data Integration products to solve very complex use cases. Each panelist was given a ten minute to overview their use of our product, followed by a barrage of questions from the audience. Michael Wells spoke about using Oracle GoldenGate for heterogeneous real time replication from HP (Tandem) NonStop to SQL Server and emphasized the need for using standard naming conventions for when customers configure GoldenGate, as the practices is immensely helpful when debugging a problem. Joy Mathew and Venkat Govindarajan from Comcast described how they have used GoldenGate for over a decade and their experiences of using the product for replicating data from HP nonstop to Terdata. Serkan Karatas from Turk Telekom dove into using Oracle GoldenGate and the value of archiving data in extremely large databases, which in Turk Telekoms case resulted in a 1 month ROI for the entire project.   I've dig the database here and didn't found any answer for my question. What is a standard for a php programmer to know? I mean, literally, what group of language functions, mechanisms, variables should person know to consider oneself a (good) php programmer? (I know 'being good' is beyond language syntax, still I'm considering syntax of plain php only) To give an example what I mean: functions to control http sessions, cookies functions to control connection with databases functions to control file handling functions to control xml etc.. I omit phrases like 'security' or 'patterns' or 'framework' intentionally as it applies to every programming language. Hope I made myself clear, any input appreciated :) Note: Michael J.V. is right claiming that databases are independent from language, so to put my question more precisely and emphasise differences: Practises or security, are some ideas to implement (there is no 'Pattern' object with 'Decorator()' method, is there?) while using databases means knowing a mysqli and a set of its methods.

  As I am reading book Game Coding Complete (http://www.amazon.com/Game-Coding-Complete-Third-McShaffry/dp/1584506806/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295978774&sr=8-1), the author recommend Event Driven communication among the all game objects and modules. Basicaly, all the living game actors and object should communicate with the key modules (Physics, AI, Game Logic, Game View, etc..) via internal event messaging system. This would mean designing efficient event manager as well. My question is, whether this is proven and recommended approach. If it is not properly designed, it might mean consuming a lot of CPU cycles, which can be used elsewhere. This is especially true, if the game is targetted for mobile platform. What is your opinion and recommendation, please?

  I have installed Hadoop 1.0.3 in Ubuntu 12.04 version (64bit) based on michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubuntu-linux-single-node-cluster/ . I am trying to run a mapreduce job using the wordcount example. Running the command hduser@ubuntu: $/usr/local/hadoop/bin/hadoop jar hadoop-examples-1.0.3.jar wordcount /user/hduser/gutenberg /user/hduser/gutenberg-output gives the following error: Warning: $HADOOP_HOME is deprecated. • How do I consistently activate USB speakers

  I have a pair of Ricco USB speakers. As these are external, I sought to use them with 11.10. They are recognised by 'aplay -l' and Pulseaudio- I have selected them, but, have to reset the volume, every time I log on. I can also only recieve feedback and sound from apps and programs- like Kaffeine- on this boosted volume- I cannot get System Sounds, like logon or logoff. I have tried the alsamixer install that used to work, to no effect. Is their an app that I should be trying or is this feat impossible ? I have tried to delete all the files in .pulse and rebooting or just deletion of the entire .purge directory, as Michael K suggested- neither work as the directory is automatically rewritten on reboot. Ideas?

In addition to Canon MX870 printer only shows "Processing" on the status LCD, I'm not sure if I successfully removed the old MX870 driver (I removed it by using Ubuntu Software Center), then I added a new PPA, apt-get update and then: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon-trunk $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-mx870series Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package cnijfilter-mx870series is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'cnijfilter-mx870series' has no installation candidate How could I resolve this?

  So im sure there are topics on this, but alot of them list older material. And the last book: http://www.amazon.com/OpenGL-SuperBible-Comprehensive-Tutorial-Reference/dp/0321712617/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346116133&sr=8-1&keywords=opengl REALLY REALLY disappointed me. I DO NOT want to use someone else's library to learn this stuff, that bothers me SOOO much. So I was hoping there was a newer book that goes into detail, and doesn't use some sort of library "Hiding" everything from you. Or should I just look at older material? If so....anything thats not "too" out of date. Terrain tutorials are a plus (that's kinda my "goal"). Thanks

I am also planning on going back to the Orlando session in December of this year. So what did I like the most about this event? Being able to interact one-on-one with a majority of the speakers. If you read my blog post then you will see a list of the speakers that I met up with. I also made a lot of great connections with other professional developers all over the world. They are having an event in Las Vegas on April 18th-22nd. I noticed at this event that they have added a new track on mobile. Being a big fan of mobile, I feel that this is a great move. I must add that you can save $300 bucks by getting the early-bird special.   Virtual Conference SSWUG (DBTechCon) - holds the largest virtual conference in the information technology industry. It is also special to me because they selected a majority of my Silverlight content for the April conference. No traveling fees and all of the sessions are recorded so you can watch them on-demand for $189 bucks (early-bird special). For the entire speaker list then click here. Codestock.org – If you live in the South then you have heard of CodeStock. To my knowledge, they have only had 3 events so far and they were a huge success. It was such a success that after the last event, everyone was telling me how good it was and how much they enjoyed it. They currently have a call for speakers going on right now, so if you have sessions then be sure to submit yours. So, what makes them stand out? Well for starters Michael Neal (organizer) developed an open API so conference attendees could build their own apps for the sessions. They also encouraged their speakers to go to other sessions instead of stay in a “speaker-room”. Another cool feature is that they are uploading videos from the conference so everyone can benefit. They are currently looking for sponsorship, so help out if you can.   In-Person Event Redmond, WA on October 28/29 2011 *NOT 100% SURE AT THIS POINT* PDC 11 – OK, so the logo should be pdc11 but its not out yet. This event is located on Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, WA. It is probably one of the most well known conferences for developers to attend. One of the big perks from this event is that you typically come away with free stuff. In 2010 they gave away Windows 7 Phones. I remember years earlier they gave away laptops. This of course isn’t the only reason to go, you may get to tour the Microsoft campus. Since pdc is a huge event, you can view all the events for free. Java or enterprise applications running on Oracle Database 11gR2 or higher and Oracle Solaris 11 can run up to 20X faster than traditional platforms on Oracle SuperCluster without any changes to their code.  Large number of customers are consolidating hundreds of their applications and databases on Oracle SuperCluster and are requiring their ISVs to support it. ISVs can become Oracle SuperCluster Ready and Oracle SuperCluster Optimized by joining the Oracle Exastack program.
