  • No network upsets gnome

    An issue that has been bothering me for over a year now. My notebook, running ubuntu 10.04, is almost all the time using a wired connection, with static IP address. And a remote DNS server. Network is configured with entries in /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf, rather than whatever the gnome UI tool was (*) But if I'm out, or simply unplug the network cable, a few things get weird. Specifically the gnome-panel stops working - it is still there, but isn't updating. And opening a nautilus window (e.g. to look at files on the local disk) has huge time-outs. By that I mean it will not open the window for something like 30 or 60 seconds; but when it does finally open it I can see the files and it is perfectly usable. Everything else works fine, alt-tab between windows, etc. I use the commandline to find the pid of gnome-panel, kill it, wait a couple of seconds, and it opens up a fresh panel which is normally usable. (Something like 10 minutes later it will have locked/crashed again; the same for the nautilus windows.) I'm guessing this is a DNS issue? Would setting up a local DNS server help? Guess number 2 was related to having a file server mount (samba, though running on another linux box), and symbolic links to files and directories on that file server on my desktop. My question is a bit vague... Does anyone recognize these symptoms, and have a suggestion? Or do you have some troubleshooting suggestions for narrowing down the problem? This is after pulling out the network cable. A sub-directory of the desktop took 23 secs to open up. Content appears immediately (just 8 files, it has no further subdirectories). The home directory icon took 12 seconds to open up, but then took about 30 seconds for the files to appear. I closed it and tried again. This time it took 18 seconds to open up, but then 70 seconds before anything appeared. *: I couldn't work out how to use the gnome network tool for my needs, which include 3-4 static IPs for testing virtual hosts locally.

  • Resolving System Restore error - Error 0x800423F3 - The writer experienced a transient error

    System restore just stopped working, when I needed it most. (tried diff restore points... same error). Now everytime I run system-restore, it fails with the above error message. I cleared the event logs and retried to isolate the relevant events. I see 5 warnings and 1 info event from VSS and 1 error from System Restore. Is there anyway to overcome this limit so I don't have to keep the current priority or omit something from the list?

  • Fedora 10 setting up HPLIP for HP Deskjet F4488

    I had set up a newly purchased HP F4488 using HPLIP, I installed it on my Fedora 10 desktop and it worked fine for the past 2 days. Suddenly, it is failing to print. The scanner works and the photocopier works. When a print job is initialized there is an error and the printer gets disabled. What is the problem? Is there anything that I should fix additionally to make it work?

  • How to add .plugins to flat-packages

    I'm rewriting my installers to use flat-packages instead of the old package format. pkgbuild doesn't accept my .plugin bundles though. The error is pkgbuild: error: Path "/tmp/installroot/MIDIDriver.plugin" is not a valid bundle component (using destination path "/tmp/installroot)" I tried a lot of different bundles which all were recognized as they should. (.kext, .vst etc.). This problem only appears with .plugin-bundles. Does anyone know what is wrong with these?

  • Dual head setup for Ubuntu 10.04.1 and Windows XP Pro with same hardware configuration

    Hello. I have a Dell OptiPlex 360 workstation at work, with 2 x ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] graphics cards installed, which are attached to two identical 19" HII flat panel monitors. I'm using the open source Radeon driver with Ubuntu, and the proprietary drivers with Windows. The good news is that dual head configuration works for both OSes. The bad news is, I have to use a different hardware configuration for each OS to achieve this. Hardware config #1: Dual monitors work for Windows XP Pro like this: First display -> external VGA port Second display -> DVI input on gfx card Hardware config #2: Dual monitors work for Ubuntu 10.04.1 like this: First display -> VGA port on gfx card Second display -> DVI input on gfx card I connected up the displays according to Config #2 and booted up Windows, which resulted in a mirror image on both screens. I was unable to login, as the login box was not visible. I unplugged the VGA lead from gfx card and plugged it into the external VGA port (Config #1) - Windows dual head works again, but the VGA-connected screen is not recognised by Ubuntu and remains in standby mode. Is it possible to configure a dual head setup for Ubuntu using Config #1, or am I missing something? I tried setting up dual monitors using Config #1, this morning which didn't work.   • Disable SSD in ASUS 900 running Ubuntu 9.10

    Recently I managed to completely mess up my ASUS 900, but I have no immediate desire to upgrade since it's only my travel laptop (and I'm waiting for a few months to see if anything interesting comes out). For now, though, I've hit an interesting problem. The 4GB SSD that is soldered onto the motherboard is broken. Since it's soldered on, there's really no hope of replacing it (I believe), so I've been solely running off the 16GB that is inserted into the mini pci-e slot. But since it can't read from the SSD it keeps giving me an error every time it tries to boot and read the ssd. Is there any way to either force Ubuntu to not check the drives on boot or disable the drive altogether, so that I don't have to sit through a 5 minute boot process each time I want to use the computer?

  • Motherboard wiring

    I am putting a new motherboard in a chenbro chasis and I dont get how to plugin the wires for powerSW resetSW, etc. It is a SuperMicro P4DP6 motherboard. ** I cant post an image yet, but here is a long to the spot on the mobo where this goes: http://andrewslack.info/mobo.png The powerSW lead is a green and white wire. I have the wire for PowerSW in place as the white wire ground and I have tried the reverse even (green to ground). The wire is covering Pin 1 and 2 in the diagram And I press the power button on the machine and nothing happens. It worked before I replaced the motherboard, the 24-pin ATX power leas is connected as well as the 2dn 6-pin optional power. Thoughts?

  • Winbind group lookup painfully slow

    I am running winbind on an RHEL 6 system. Everything works fine except group lookups, so many commands (including sudo) are painfully slow. I did an strace which shows that winbind looks up every group and every user within each group for the current user. Some of these groups have 20000+ users so a simple sudo can take 60 seconds to complete. I really only care about speeding up the sudo command. Ideal solutions would make it so either: groups with more than X number of users will not be looked up, or sudo bypasses group lookups altogether.   • Intel Wireless 4965AGN not achieving N throughput when connected to an Airport Express N network

    I have an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adaptor in my laptop (HP Pavillion dv2000 series) which is connecting to a 5Ghz-only 802.11n network provided by an Apple Airport Express. The network is using WPA2 encryption. My desktop is also connected the Airport, via a Linksys WUSB600N USB adaptor. Both are running with the latest drivers, and the Airport is running the latest firmware. The Airport is also configured to use wide channels. The problem I have is that I never get throughput above 4MB/s when transferring files between the two machines. Even a pessimistic calculation shows a 270Mbps network as being capable of transfer rates at well above 10MB/s. I'm pretty sure I've isolated the issue to being the Intel adaptor, as wiring the desktop to the AP, and using the Linksys adaptor on the laptop immediately yielded speeds limited by the 100MB/s ethernet connection. I know that 802.11n is still a draft standard, and so mixing kit from different manufacturers can easily lead to poor results, but I was just wondering if anybody else out there has had success with this Intel adaptor on an N network? Or even better, connecting it to an Airport Express? Can anybody give me any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue? I should also mention that the Airport Express doesn't allow you to manually specify channels when running in N mode, and that I've been able to rule out interference from other Wireless LANs by scanning. There aren't any other 5GHz networks in my area. All ideas welcome! Update: A while later, I've just updated to the most recent drivers for both the Intel chip in the laptop, and the USB adaptor. Unfortunately this hasn't improved things :(. If anybody has any advice it would be be gratefully received.

  • Recommended ADSL/ADSL2 router that supports PPTP VPN dial-out, 802.11n and gigabit ethernet?

    I'm looking for a new router to provide a VPN tunnel for my home network. My plan is to pass all internet traffic over a PPTP VPN provided by the router, which should ensure that the connection stays alive and only passes traffic over that protocol. I'm normally quite a fan of Draytek routers, and their 2710n does seem to feature VPN dial-out but it lacks Gigabit ports (though I can make do with that if the VPN support is good enough). Has anyone got any suggestions or personal experience in a similar setup? I'm happy to consider anything that supports dd-wrt (as I believe that supports VPN-out, though I may be wrong). Bonus points for models available in the UK.

    I have two NVidia graphics cards: Quadro NVS 295 (PCI Express, dual DisplayPort outputs) GeForce FX 5200 (PCI, DVI and VGA outputs) I have three identical monitors, two on DisplayPort and one on DVI. I'm on Ubuntu Hardy (and cannot currently dist-upgrade for separate reasons). I use the "nvidia" driver. What's new is the GeForce card and the third monitor. I currently have the dual DisplayPort monitors working fine. What am I missing? How can I make nvidia-settings show my second GPU so I can then configure its monitor?

    I use colinux, see http://www.colinux.org/ ; I used the ubuntu image (ubuntu without desktop environment) and install the packages gdm ?x-window-system-core and gnome-core and update to 10.04. the default user ( which is the only one user) is root. When I try to drag a file into gnome-terminal, I don't get the path of this file, instead the image of this file just came back to the original place. Anyone knows why this happened?

  • Laptop Asus P50IJ with Intel 4500M GMA output going to a Dell 1907FP external monitor will not allow

    Hello - I just purchased an Asus P50IJ-X2 laptop which has a Intel GMA 4500M video card running Windows7. At work I output this laptop to a Dell 1907FP LCD which has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Not matter what I do the Windows will not allow the laptop to set a resolution higher than 1024x768 to this LCD monitor. Ive even gone to the extent of downloading PowerStrip (I'd post a link but Im new and can only enter 1 url, if you google for powerstrip its the first option) to create a custom driver for my monitor thinking Windows was having a hard time seeing the available resolutions it would accept. However, powerstrip read the registery and properly sees the monitor and what its capable of so Im now at a complete loss as to why Windows7 will not allow me to set/use a 1280x1024 resolution for this external monitor (as my last laptop did running Vista). The Intel documentation (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-integrated-graphics/) indicates that the GMA 4500M should be able to run up to a 2560x1600 max res. The Dell 1907FP specification states it can run up to a 1280x1024 res. But no matter what the computer will not allow me to set higher than a 1024x768. I'm completely baffled but I would really like to be able to output this laptop to a reasonable resolution, 1024x768 makes me feel like I'm using my mom's computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!   • Switched to xubuntu, unity theme wont go away

    I got fed up with unity and decided to switch to xubuntu, following the instructions on this thread. Almost everything went well, and I'm much happier with the system. but the window borders from the unity theme are still being used, overriding the xubuntu themes. I've uninstalled all the unity stuff that I can find. I have, however, kept compiz for some of its functionality. I note that if I disable the "Window Decoration" plugin the whole border disappears leaving nothing behind. I want to have normal xubuntu borders. (note that stuff like chromium that handles its own borders displays correctly) I'll gladly give more details, or upload screenshots. Just let me know what information would be helpful.     Hello ! Every one. I am having a query regarding WiFi network. I am having PC & LapTop. Now, Let me explain the situation. I requested My WiFi providers that I want connection in my PC. So that - WiFi provider set up an Antenna on my building Terrace - They joined a cable to pc & that Antenna. ( I think using RJ45 connector ) - The reason behind this - my pc is not having inbuilt wifi functionality. Now - almost laptops have inbuilt functionality. Now - On terrace there is wifi with superb speed. But on my flat - wifi comes with low speed. so, when ever I use internet on my pc - it has great speed - but my laptop works with low speed. The reason behind this - PC is catching wifi from terrace & laptop is catching the wifi from it's own place. Now, My question is something like this. Can we place an antenna or something like that & connect it to laptop for better wifi speed? So that - WiFi provider set up an Antenna on my building Terrace - They joined a cable to pc & that Antenna. ( I think using RJ45 connector ) - The reason behind this - my pc is not having inbuilt wifi functionality. Now - almost laptops have inbuilt functionality. Now - On terrace there is wifi with superb speed. But on my flat - wifi comes with low speed. so, when ever I use internet on my pc - it has great speed - but my laptop works with low speed. The reason behind this - PC is catching wifi from terrace & laptop is catching the wifi from it's own place. Now, My question is something like this. Can we place an antenna or something like that & connect it to laptop for better wifi speed?
