  Today I upgraded to Android SDK 2.3 and I also upgraded the Eclipse Plugin Androi Developer Tools 8.0 (from 0.9.9). I also upgraded my Java Development Kit to 1.6_22. Now in Eclipse I get many errors in all my Android projects. The error messages are like: The type java.lang.Object cannot be resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files. How can I fix this so I can use my Android projects again? In the Build Path for these projects, I don't have any references to an android.jar but a message: Unable to get system library for project

• JRuby on Rails deployment

  I need to host a JRuby on Rails app on Mongrel. The problem is that I need to support mutual authentication. I know that I could just host it behind a Apache with mod_proxy use mod_ssl to pass the cred or part of the cred as a request header to rails. But I want the whole stack to be Java. Is there a Java application server that can do mod_proxy + ssl kind of configuration without me having to install Apache. Also, we need this to be platform independent. IIS or Apache+OpenSSL is actually not a preferred alternative. Any alternative deployment configurations are also welcome.

  I have a multiple module project The first module contains my hibernate xml files and data java beans and packages as har. The second module defines my DAO classes. This module has a dependancy on data java beans with in the har and is defined in pom.xml. <dependency> <groupId>myproject</groupId> <artifactId>myhar</artifactId> <version>1.0</version> <type>har</type> </dependency> The first module compiles, packages and installs fine into my local repository. The problem is when the second modules compiles it has a problem finding the packages and class defined in my har module. I get the following output from running mvn install package myproject.myhar does not exist and build fails.

• Linux server is only using 60% of memory, then swapping

  I've got a Linux server that's running our bacula backup system. The machine is grinding like mad because it's going heavy in to swap. The problem is, it's only using 60% of its physical memory! I'm at a loss to figure out what's going on. How can I find out what's causing this? Update: The system is a fully 64-bit system, so there should be no question of memory limitations due to 32-bit issues. Update2: As I mentioned in the original question, I've already tried tuning swappiness to all sorts of values, including 0. The result is always the same, with approximately 1.6 GB of memory remaining unused. Update3: Added top output to the above info.

  I enjoy all the python libraries for scraping websites and I am experimenting with BeautifulSoup and IMDB just for fun. As I come from Java, I have some Java-practices incorporated into my programming styles. I am trying to get the info of a certain movie, I can either create a Movie class or just use a dictionary with keys for the attributes. My question is, should I just use dictionaries when a class will only contain data and perhaps almost no behaviour? In other languages creating a type will help you enforce certain restrictions and because of type checks the IDE will help you program, this is not always the case in python, so what should I do? Should I resort to creating a class only when there's both, behaviour and data? Or create a movie class even though it'll probably be just a data container? This all depends on your model, in this particular case either one is fine but I'm wondering about what's a good practice.

They give you javascript code that you embed in your pages (whichever event you wish to track) and voila..you're done. I have written a native application for Android phones, which is actually an adaptation of the actual web site. Now, I am required to setup Analytics and tracking for this native application. Question: How to do setup a native application for Analytics? We have Java Script code(not Google Analytics but for some other engine) that works for the original web site. Is there a way to incorporate that in the native application? I know Android supports Java Script via WebViews(Webkit);my application does not have webviews, it is native!   Hi All I'm currently trying to write a Dump() method from LinqPad equivalent iin C# for my own amusment. I'm moving from Java to C# and this is an exercise rather than a business requirement. I've got almost everything working except for Dumping a Dictionary. The problem is that KeyValuePair is a Value type. For most other Value types I simply call the ToString method but this is insufficient as the KeyValuePair may contain Enumerables and other objects with undesirable ToString methods. So I need to work out if it's a KeyValuePair and then cast it. In Java I could use wildcard generics for this but I don't know the equivalent in C#. Your quest, given an object o, determine if it's a KeyValuePair and call Print on its key and value. Print(object o) { ... } Thanks!

For instance imagine I have a full text column containing the words "Steve's Javascript Tutorial - Part One". I would like to match this for each of the following searches: "tutorials", "javascript tutorials", "java", "java script", "script" Imagine that each of those searches is simply assigned to a variable in whatever language may be being used (I always use PHP). • Why are C, C++, and LISP so prevalent in embedded devices and robots?

  It seems that the software language skills most sought for embedded devices and robots are C, C++, and LISP. Why haven't more recent languages made inroads into these applications? For example, Erlang would seem particularly well-suited to robotic applications, since it makes concurrent programming easier and allows hot swapping of code. Python would seem to be useful, if for no other reason than its support of multiple programming paradigms. I'm even surprised that Java hasn't made a foray into general robotic programming. I'm sure one argument would be, "Some newer languages are interpreted, not compiled" - implying that compiled languages are quicker and use fewer computational resources. Is this still the case, in a time when we can put a Java Virtual Machine on a cell phone or a SunSpot? (and isn't LISP interpreted anyway?)

• O(N log N) Complexity - Similar to linear?

  Hey All, So I think I'm going to get buried for asking such a trivial but I'm a little confused about something. I have implemented quicksort in Java and C and I was doing some basic comparissons. The graph came out as two straight lines, with the C being 4ms faster than the Java counterpart over 100,000 random integers. The code for my tests can be found here; android-benchmarks I wasn't sure what an (n log n) line would look like but I didn't think it would be straight. I just wanted to check that this is the expected result and that I shouldn't try to find an error in my code.   I am a lifelong object-oriented programmer. My job is primarily java development, but I have experience in a number of languages. Ruby gave me my first real taste of functional programming. I loved the features Ruby borrowed from the functional paradigm such as closures and continuations. Eventually, I graduated to Scala. This has been a great way to gradually learn to approach non-trivial problems in a functional manner. Now I am interested in Clojure. I know all the sexy features that make it enticing (software transactional memory, macros, etc.), but I just can't get used to "thinking in lisp". I've seen Rich Hickey's screencasts aimed at java programmers, but they are geared towards explaining language features and not approaching real world problems. I am looking for any advice or resources which have made this transition easier for others.

• The Eclipse Executable Launcher Was Unable To Locate Its Companion Shared Library

  I am a java beginner and am going through the book "Java In 24 Hours Sixth Edition" by Rogers Cadenhead. I am on chapter 24 "Creating an Android app". The book has told me to download Eclipse and Android SDK on my computer and to unzip the zip files they come in. I have put them both in the same parent file (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Downloads). Then the book tells me I can run Eclipse now and I get a message instead saying "The Eclipse Executable Launcher Was Unable To Locate Its Companion Shared Library". Is there a way to fix this? Do I just have to re-install SDK and Eclipse? I have downloaded SDK for windows 64-bit and I have windows 64-bit. Any info on how to fix this would be most appreciated.

  Sheesh talk about limited information! I'm trying to get my Android application to connect to an online database to access information. There's quite a bit of info including geotags and these are going to be mapped on my app. The developer site has the very informative piece of information: You can use the network (when it's available) to store and retrieve data on your own web-based services. To do network operations, use classes in the following packages: java.net.* android.net.* Like I said in my previous question, I'm still very much an android newbie, and trying to remember my java oop from college is slow. Does anyone have an example of how this might work, or how I could implement it? I wouldn't mind even connecting to a local xml file, if I could find a good example of how to do that!?   Hello I have a short question to the notepad tutorial on the android website. I wrote a simple function in the tutorial code to delete the whole database. So I'm definately going to brush up on that. I remember for a previous job interview, I was asked Java questions, like not super intricate, but detailed stuff. Now I'm looking for a book maybe that I can read through in a day (or two) and known all the crannies of C#, ASP.NET and JavaScript. Different books obviously I'll be honest, for the Java interview, I actually read The J2EE certification book, and it helped A LOT!

• Detect if an assembly is available

  I'm implementing an installer in Java, that is supposed to download and install an application for non-privileged users in Windows (from XP and up). The application is written in C++, and depend on the usual VC runtime-libraries (msvcm90.dll and friends). In order to save bandwidth, I want to avoid downloading the VC redistributables if they already are available for the user. I do however have a problem finding a reliable method to detect if an assembly is installed. If the assembly is missing, I will deploy it as described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235291%28VS.80%29.aspx So the question is simply how to detect if a (any) assembly is installed on the machine. It's no requirement that this can be done from Java. I can easily write a small probe in C++ and link it statically for the task. jgaa
