• WHM local/external mail server confusion

  We host several websites on the same server using WHM but this seems to confuse the mail routing when someone has their own external mail servers - it looks locally. We have our own email accounts hosted on the server. When creating an account for a client on the same server WHM adds the default entries to the DNS for that account. However this client has their own mail servers elsewhere. But when sending them an email it never reaches that external server - it just sees the local, incorrect one. I realise I can update my DNS to point to the external server, but this means I am copying their settings and if they are changed, then I will also need to update mine. Are there some settings I can use to force it to use the external servers without having to copy the settings.

• Ubuntu 12.10 installation. Hit or miss Booting

  I just recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I also completely wiped the laptop. The Ubuntu OS will only boot part of the time but never on the first time. Always, the first start up will automatically go to a purple screen and stay there. At first I waited for 45 minutes and nothing changed. Once I held down the power button to turn it off, I turned it back on to see the Asus screen followed by the grub menu. I can select "Ubuntu" and then there is a white box blinking in the top left corner. Then, it will either keep blinking or transfer to the Ubuntu loading screen(everything works fine if it gets to the loading screen). This has never happened before with prior versions of Ubuntu. Any ideas are helpful. Thanks!

• Is it legal or good idea to have a backup of all client sites on my own server

  I have seen many times that if we build a website for a client then there is a possibility that this site gets changed over a period of time. I was thinking that from now onwards whichever site I make I will host a copy of the site on a personal server. Like client1.myserver.com so that even if they change it I have the copy of it. So that if I need to show someone or I need to refer myself few things I have the proof there. I will not make them public but will password protect it. I want to know whether this is legal and a good idea or not.

  I'm interested in writing my own database - a triple-store. Are there any good resources to help with the challenges of such a project? Or more generally: How can I learn to write my own database? Some specific issues I'm unsure of: How is the data actually stored on the file-system? A flat-file seems easy enough, but a database is a lot more then a flat-file. What kinds of things are typically stored (or cached) in memory? How are indexes created and stored? How is ACID compliance achieved? Etc. This is a big topic, but knowing how to store large amounts of data in a reliable way is good to know. (My investigation into existing triple-stores was summarized back in 2008; not much has changed in 4 years it seems. This is why I want write my own.)

• Ubuntu partition won't display on screen

  I installed ggobi on my MacBook Pro, and it wasn't working right. I looked up some information, and found this site: Gtk Warning: Cannot open display I followed the vague instructions, but I think I just typed export DISPLAY=:0 directly into my terminal (I'm still in my Mac partition at this point). Fast forward a few days, and I try to go into my Ubuntu partition. It only gives me command line options. I remember my reckless input from a few days back, and I'm certain that it is the issue. My problem is that I have no idea how to get my previous display settings back. My Mac partition seems unaffected, but it'd be nice to get back into my Ubuntu partition. My last resort is completely reverting my computer to my most recent backup before I changed it, but if anyone out there knows how to fix this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

• Facebook likes reset after moving to HTTPS (URL manually set in script, though)

  Hi fellow Facebook developers. I've got a question regarding the Facebook like button. We worked on a piece recently that embeds a number of social share buttons (please see the source code below or here on Harvey Water Softeners' website) When the piece was released, it was on HTTP, and received over 2k likes (the URL 'slug' hasn't changed at all). The site was recently migrated to permanent-on HTTPS, and the like data has been reset, and we've been left with 50 new, recent likes. If you see in the source code, the URL is set explicitly to like the HTTP version, which I believe to be correct. Can anyone help me work out what's happened here? • How to make read-only file system writable?

  I am not sure since when the filesystem on my digital audio player has been changed to be read-only. I cannot copy files into it or remove files on it. Are there some possible reasons for the player's file system to change the permission of its file system? I tried chmod: $ sudo chmod a+rw SGTL\ MSCN/ chomd: changing permissions of `SGTL MSCN/': Read-only file system where "SGTL MSCN" is the mounted point of the digital audio player. • I know of three ways in which SRP helps reduce coupling. Are there even more? [closed]

  I'd like to figure all the possible ways SRP helps us reduce coupling. Thus far I can think of three: 1) If class A has more than one responsibility, these responsibilities become coupled and as such changes to one of these responsibilities may require changes to other of A's responsibilities. 2) Related functionality usually needs to be changed for the same reason and by grouping it togerther in a single class, the changes can be made in as few places as possible ( at best changes only need be made to the class which groups together these functionalities) 3) Assuming class A performs two tasks ( thus may change for two reasons ), then number of classes utilising A will be greater than if A performed just a single task ( reason being that some classes will need A to perform first task, other will need A for second task, and still others will utilise it for both tasks ).This also means that when A breaks, the number of classes ( utilising A ) being impaired will be greater than if A performed just a single task. Can SRP also help reduce coupling in any other way, not described above? Thank you

• 12.04 cannot boot from USB

  The HP Pavilion g6 notebook is unable to boot from bootable USB stick created with Linux Live USB Creator. I was able to boot other systems using the same pendrive. I have changed the boot priority using F10. When I restarted, it didn't ask for any message like Press any key to boot from When I press F19, and selected the pendrive from the available options to boot from, while restarting it gives me a message: error while trying to boot selected boot image Though I looked into the possible suggestions here, none of them worked. Looking for any help? EDIT: I was able to fix the first issue, i'e ubuntu could be installed as secure boot option in the bios was not allowing the pendrive or cd/dvd to be detected. Now once i have successfully installed ubuntu 12.04, after the restart i was unable to find it in the os menu for selection and windows8 loaded by default Ubuntu version: 12.04

• How to get files that have been added/modifed in a batch file

  I have the following batch file which concatenates all of the files in a folder that have a .sql ending. set func=%~dp0%Stored Procedures\*.sql for %%i in (%func%) do type "%%i" >>InstallScript.sql We use SVN as our repository, and we're using branching. Currently the script concatenates all the .sql files, even the ones that haven't changed. I'd like to change it so it only concatenates files that have been modified and/or created after the branch was created. We can do that by looking at the datetime on the .svn folder in each folder(there's a Stored Procedure, View, Function subfolders). But I don't know how to do that with batch files. Ideally something like this(psuedo code): set func=%~dp0%Stored Procedures\*.sql set branchDateTime=GetDateTime(%~dp0%.svn) <- Gets the datetime when the .svn folder was created for %%i in (%func%) { if(%%i.LastModifiedOrCreated > branchDateTime) do type "%%i" >> InstallScript.sql }

• Introduce unit testing when codebase is already available

  I've been working on a project in Flex for three years now without unit testing. The simple reason for that is the fact that I just didn't realize the importance of unit testing when being at the beginning of studies at university. Now my attitude towards testing changed completely and therefore I want to introduce it to the existing project (about 25000LOC). In order to do it, there are two approaches to choose from: 1) Discard the existing codebase and start from scratch with TDD 2) Write the tests and try to make them pass by changing the existing code Well, I would appreciate not having to write everything from scratch but I think by doing this, the design would be much better. I've learned that EOF is -1. i type -1 but it just reprints it. It's a never ending loop. Over time did the library get changed and differs from what the book intended it to be? when i say library i mean the putchar()/getchar() that's in the library... sorry.

• Why is there a 20 and not 21 in some versions of Planning Poker?

  In Planning Poker, cards usually contain numbers of the Fibonacci sequence, which is 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55 etc. However, you can see on the Wikipedia page (and this has been confirmed to me by people that work at several positions where Planning Poker is applied) in some editions the cards stray away from Fibonacci sequence after 13. They lower 21 to 20 and then continue with 40 and 100. Is there some rationale on why these values have been changed, specifically 21 to 20? (Also note that some other cards are added, such as ? and 1/2, but these are easier for me to understand, compared to the 21 - 20 shift.)

• Cron won't execute if am not logged in

  I have a cron that makes a backup of MySql, if I execute on shell it works pretty well even if I'm logged when cron supposed to execute works fine, but if I'm not logged just won't execute, I don't know what could happened, any suggestion ?   Hi there, I am working on a site that where I do not have permission to the server and someone else keeps changing the settings. That person just changed the settings preventing users from going to example.com/foo/ and seeing the index page. This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed. If you type in example.com/foo/index.html you can still see the file. So I want to use htaccess to redirect all urls that end in a directory to change into directory/index.html How do I write that? I started with some code that changes .php files to .html files and tried to work from that but I couldn't quite get it to work. RewriteRule ^(.*)\.php$ /$1.html [R=301,L] Any suggestions?

• Why is the font spacing on some websites broken?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 15 and so far am really impressed. I could not find a solution for my problem by googling. The fonts on some websites do not have proper spacing. they overlap and are very hard to read that way. I am using the Ubuntu standard fonts and have not changed them after installing.   I started my Career as core-Java developer 6 years ago and stayed as developer for 6-7 month and then moved to performance testing (actualy pushed into this for short term and later I started liking it). I have done all sort of non-functional testing like performance, load, stress, soak, compatibility, failover etc on many performance test tools accross many industries. I was doing contracting all these years which means I kept moving to new projects after every 3-6 months. Now personal situation has been changed, married man now so looking for something long term. Performance testing generally comes at the end of the development life cycle hence very short term contracts so I was wondering if I can move into functional/test automation side I can earn myself good length of contract. I had some exposure of QTP but I am sure to learn all other tools very quickly as I am quite good in programming and concept of testing. in short I want to move into functional test automation to get long term contract without leaving my love for programming . any thoughts please ?

  We have our old site into core PHP and we have developed it again into Joomla 1.5 last year( because of some limitations we have to build it into 1.5). Now the problem is the URL of sites changed as we have use SEO URLS on joomla. In between we have use .htaccess to redirect user from old URL to new like this Redirect /pages/oldpage.php http://www.mydomain.com/products/category/new_page.html Is this good practice to redirect user to new URL or not?(we have used same server). One more thing, We have used splash page on our site, and to set up it we have made some changes and because of it one of the important link is not working, and it is http://www.mydomail.com/index.php How can I get rid of it? I have used DirectoryIndex splash.html home.html index.php in .htaccess to open splash page first when someone open my site http://www.mydomain.com. • Missing & Failed Folder At/and After Installation

  I am new to Linux, and I've trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (dual boot with Windows XP). I choose to add new partition (FAT32 150 GB) for the shared folder. But when I pressed the install button, the installer warned me : Failed to create the 150 GB shared partition. So I turned back to the partition section and changed the shared partition to 50GB FAT32 (/mnt/shared). I pressed the install button and I was successful. But, when I boot Ubuntu, I could not find this 50GB folder. QUESTIONS: 1. What is wrong with the 150GB size? Is my hard disk failing? 2. Why is the 50GB shared folder not showing?   I am developing a game in AndEngine so far I managed to create everything I wanted for my sprite that was connected to a BoxBody. I was rotating it moving it everything was great. I wanted my collision detection to be more precise so I changed from boxBody to unique irregular shaped body. I found all the vertices and I just replaced the newly created irregular shaped body with the boxbody everywhere in my code. Not only that the image of the sprite is not in place but all the physics and maths I was doing for movement and physics wont work. Please help me :(. Thanks in advance.

  I want to transfer Thunderbird Profile on Win7 to thunderbird (17) Ubuntu 12.04. I already copied the profile folder from Windows to Ubuntu and modified progile.ini on the ubuntu machine to include [Profile] Name=Bill IsRelative=1 Path=(the name of the transfered profile folder) I think the problem is that the Win. TB profile content (files and folder structure) look VERY different that the that of the unbuntu TB profile's that was created on installation. The Ubuntu install is new where as the Win TB has undergone many updates. Seems the system for profile storage has changed drastically. I tried to start TB in safe mode but could't get the path correct to start TB in the terminal with the -safe-mode switch. What can I do? Bill

  I received a rather heartfelt e-mail from a user on our site explaining that Taiwan wasn't a province of China and that they wouldn't register until this was changed. Our site is made from a dozen or so valued contributors so we are going to change it. See issue here: http://www.iso.org/iso/country_codes/iso_3166-faqs/iso_3166_faqs_specific.htm. I found the lines to edit in my CMS, but we have valued users from both China and Taiwan. I was wondering the most politically neutral way to amend my country codes. What should the entries for China and Taiwan say?
