• Can't mount windows partition?

  When I try to open the Windows Partition from Ubuntu I receive the error: Unable to mount 55 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited without exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup_warn: magic: 0x04010400 size: 1024 usa_ofs: 1026 usa_count: 1026: Invalid argument Record 6 has no FILE magic (0x4010400) Failed to open inode FILE_Bitmap: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more detail. Additionally, I can't open the Windows Partition. I've tried updating it many times but it won't show up on GRUB. Does anybody know what all this means? And how I might fix it? I thank you for any help in advance

  I am not able to start Windows and am using a DVD copy of Ubuntu to start up. I see my 750 GB Hard Disk, but if I click it i get this error: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. • Alt Key + Mouse Scroll is the New Text Zoom In/Out in NetBeans

  When the text zoom in/out, via "Ctrl Key + Mouse Wheel", was introduced in editors in a recent version of NetBeans IDE, many people cheered. Others booed because the combination "Ctrl Key + Mouse Wheel" is often pressed accidentally, especially when the user scrolls in the editor while intending to use some Ctrl shortcut, such as paste, which is Ctrl-v. So, in NetBeans IDE 7.2, the text zoom in/out is now "Alt Key + Mouse Wheel": http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212484 Remember that the text change only persists for as long as the file is open. So, if you've accidentally resized the text (i.e., in the current situation, prior to 7.2, where unintended side effects may happen because of Ctrl key usage), you can just close the file and reopen it to get the text size back to the way it was before.

  Trying to create a bash script that opens gnome-terminal, and then runs ls to display the contents of a directory, but it just opens gnome-terminal. I will be creating some other scripts that also use multiple commands. My script: #!/bin/bash gnome-terminal ls -a /examplefolder EDIT: To clarify what I'm trying to achieve. I'm trying to create a script that will open gnome-terminal, list the contents of /examplefolder, and then be ready for regular terminal usage. Is this possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

• Add/remove UILocalNotification based on changes in my settings bundle

  I have an app that sends a notification at the same time everyday, reminding the user to enter data into it. However, I want to give the user teh option to disable this as this could get very annoying, so I have an "Enable alerts" in a custom settings bundle. My question is, when the user toggles the switch in the settings bundle, can I add/remove the notifications that are already scheduled without having to enter the app again? note: I'm building and supporting for iOS 4.2.1, and I don't konw why but under "notifications" in the settings app, my app does not appear. I see it on ios 5.x devices though

  In Ruby, I'm creating a small game development framework. Just some personal project - a very small group of friends helping. Now I am in need of handling geometric concepts. Rectangles, Circles, Polygons, Vectors, Lines, etc. So I made a class for each of these. I'm stuck deciding whether I should package such classes in a module, such as Geometry. So I'd access them like Geometry::Rectangle, or just Rectangle if I include the module. Now then, my question isn't about this specific scenario. I'd like to know, when is it suitable to package similar classes into one module in Ruby? What factors should I consider? Amount of classes? Usage frequency? Complexity?

But there are so many services (S3, EC2, etc etc), I cant figure out which service is for web hosting, which service is for what use, their docs is so huge, I am confused, what to read. can anybody write some good points, about which service to use specifically for Java apps, how much I will be charged, and they ask for credit/debit card credential for signup, does it mean they will debit me even in the free period?

That is, does Access Time change only when package get received by the user? (we are apt-cacher for more than 6 months).

• Visual Tree Enumeration

  I feel compelled to post this blog because I find I’m repeatedly posting this same code in silverlight and windows-phone-7 answers in Stackoverflow. One common task that we feel we need to do is burrow into the visual tree in a Silverlight or Windows Phone 7 application (actually more recently I found myself doing this in WPF as well).  This allows access to details that aren’t exposed directly by some controls.  A good example of this sort of requirement is found in the “Restoring exact scroll position of a listbox in Windows Phone 7”  question on stackoverflow.  This required that the scroll position of the scroll viewer internal to a listbox be accessed. A caveat One caveat here is that we should seriously challenge the need for this burrowing since it may indicate that there is a design problem.  Burrowing into the visual tree or indeed burrowing out to containing ancestors could represent significant coupling between module boundaries and that generally isn’t a good idea. Why isn’t this idea just not cast aside as a no-no?  Well the whole concept of a “Templated Control”, which are in extensive use in these applications, opens the coupling between the content of the visual tree and the internal code of a control.   For example, I can completely change the appearance and positioning of elements that make up a ComboBox.  The ComboBox control relies on specific template parts having set names of a specified type being present in my template.  Rightly or wrongly this does kind of give license to writing code that has similar coupling. Hasn’t this been done already? Yes it has.  There are number of blogs already out there with similar solutions.  In fact if you are using Silverlight toolkit the VisualTreeExtensions class already provides this feature.  However I prefer my specific code because of the simplicity principle I hold to.  Only write the minimum code necessary to give all the features needed.  In this case I add just two extension methods Ancestors and Descendents, note I don’t bother with “Get” or “Visual” prefixes.  Also I haven’t added Parent or Children methods nor additional “AndSelf” methods because all but Children is achievable with the addition of some other Linq methods.  I decided to give Descendents an additional overload for depth hence a depth of 1 is equivalent to Children but this overload is a little more flexible than simply Children. • My Ubuntu drive is running out of space, how to fix, something is wrong

  I'm moving from windows and am having trouble figuring this out: I'm getting a message that pops up saying disk space is low. It says I have 800MB free. I click on the disk usage analyzer and it shows 24.6 total capacity and 22.5 used. When I look in GParted it shows a partition at 72.6GB where I have Ubuntu installed. It also shows that 70.65GB used and 1.94 free in that partition. How do I figure out what else is in that partition? It's the only ext4 format. What am I missing?

• Can you delete the Humanity icon theme safely?

  I'm trying to reduce used space after running disk usage analyser, since I'm using a 40GB SSD. The icons use quite a bit of space! Could I delete those that I don't use, such as humanity? (I use Faenza-Dark) If it is possible, what would be the best way to this? as when I attempt to remove humanity in the Software Centre it says the software-centre itself must be removed. Similar problems arise with synaptic package manager. I was wary of just deleting the unused directories in usr/share/icons/. Thanks for the help!

• IIS errors since upgrading to dot net 4

  Back in October we upgraded one of our sites (on IIS 6) from .net 3.5 to .net 4.0. Since then we have been getting the following warning and error pretty much everyday: Warning: ISAPI 'c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll' reported itself as unhealthy for the following reason: 'Deadlock detected'. Error: It is not possible to run two different versions of ASP.NET in the same IIS process. Please use the IIS Administration Tool to reconfigure your server to run the application in a separate process. We have checked all applications and ensured that they are running on the correct versions of ASP.NET and also in their own separate app pools. We have looked at the IIS logs at the time the errors are recorded but this doesn't give any clues as to the issue. Is there a tool available that could give us more information as as to which application is causing the errors and what was happening at the time?

• If Ubuntu freezes when running off a USB drive, will it freeze after full installation?

  I'm planning to install Ubuntu on an aging Compaq Presario V5000. I've established that the Unity desktop is not suited to this laptop, and am now using the standard (Gnome?) desktop. I'm grappling with ndiswrapper and my wireless chipset. But I'm still running it off a USB drive before I take the plunge and install properly to my internal HD. Part of my reticence in completing the installation is I'm experience freezes after about 10-20 minutes usage. Is this likely to be in any way related to running it off the USB drive?

• What types of programming require practical category theory?

  Category theory has applications in theoretical computer science and obviously is central to abstract mathematics. I have heard that it also has direct practical applications in programming and software development. What type of programming is practical category theory necessary for? What do programmers use category theory to accomplish? Please note my use of "necessary" and "require" in this post. I realize that in some sense most programmers will benefit from having experience in different types of theories, but I am looking for direct applications where the usage of category theory is essential, i.e. if you didn't know category theory, you probably couldn't do it.   I installed the Droid@Screen plugin into NetBeans IDE 8 so that you can see the Android device that I held in my hand while doing the demo below. The demo shows the usage of the Terminal window to create an Ionic Framework application (from "tabs", which is one of the cool templates that the framework provides), i.e., that means I can use AngularJS to create a Cordova application out of the box, with many mobile-oriented components available out of the box. Then I deploy the app to the Chrome browser on Android, which means I can interact with it in NetBeans, e.g., for CSS styling and JavaScript debugging. In this demo, I show how the background color of the deployed app can be changed live from NetBeans. After that, once I'm happy with the styling, I deploy the app again, but this time as a Cordova app, i.e., a hybrid HTML5 application, which means the app is packaged as a native app and deployed directly to the device from NetBeans.   Ads in free Android apps might be annoying but you probably never imagined they were radically draining your battery. New research from Purdue University and Microsoft highlight just how much ad-driven apps tank your battery life. What did they find? That poorly designed ad-modules in free ad-driven applications are terrible at conserving energy. In popular applications like Angry Birds and Free Chess 70% of the energy the application consumed was used to drive the ads. They also surveyed other applications and found that ad-driven apps weren’t alone in excessive battery use–the New York Times app, for example, spent 15% of its battery consumption on tracking and background tasks. • 12.04 on Pentium Dual Core with 1GB or ram running slow

  hey i have a Lenovo Thinkpad Laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 installed. It runs slow. I tried "System profiler and Benchmark" to test the computer. but the application quits and closes after the first few benchmark test. before it even gets to the other tests. So i tried "Hardinfo" that installed on the Puppy Linux live cd. that did the same thing (the apps look just a like). the memory usage isnt the problem on this pc. its the cpu processes. just running the "system profiler" app that comes with ubuntu uses about 34% on each core, default with nothing running its 5-10% on each core. i cant really find what the deal is other than that ubuntu is a cpu hog. so im testing unity2D at the moment to see how it goes. if you have any other suggestions, feel free to answer this question. thanks

  Having used the Command+M keyboard shortcut to minimize windows in OS X, I'd like to use the same functionality in Ubuntu 10.10. When I try, though, it only brings up the "communications" section of the indicator applet; like so: In the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences, I have set as the minimize shortcut Mod4+M, which I got by capturing the Apple Command key and the M key. I find no other shortcut using this key combination in Keyboard Shortcuts, and yet I cannot get the window to minimize when using it. Does anyone know how to override Ubuntu's default usage of this key combination? Thanks!
