• How to programmatically launch a chromecast app from command line

  I want to launch a Chromecast app but NOT using the chrome extension or iOS or Android. Doing this from command line. I noticed that you can send a POST to your chromecast, and it will launch an app. For example if I do curl -H “Content-Type: application/json” http://CHROMECAST_IP:8008/apps/YouTube -X POST -d ‘v=oHg5SJYRHA0' Then it will start up youtube. But for some reason I can't do this with custom apps (in dev mode). I thought I'd be able to send a POST to http://CHROMECAST_IP:8008/apps/MY_REGISTERED_APP_ID, but no luck. I just get a 404 response. Hmmm... My app is just a simple webpage (it is not streamed media). I want to run a little headless server that starts my chromecast app everyday via a CRON task. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

  In my web application i have one page call it mypage.html When user clicks some link in mypage a modal window will be opened and he will see some html page. (I do this by Colorbox or Twitter Bootstrap now) But when user clicked a button in modal window, an Ajax request will be sent to my server. If request is successfull he will see some new modal window, else user will see another modal window. After all steps user will close modal window and tasks will be finished. Which jquery modal window plugin is suitable for this type of usage?

  An answer on How to disable HUD in Unity 2D? points to https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-2d/+bug/947613 where the ALT key will be made reconfigurable. Apart from emacs usage, I'm reasonably happy with using the ALT key to bring up the HUD. While using emacs though, the ALT key is tapped frequently to invoke commands. Should emacs be special cased with respect to the ALT key? I'm wondering what the situation is with games; surely lots of games repurpose the ALT key for their own use, e.g. to fire a weapon? If so, could the same be applied to Emacs, i.e. prevent the ALT key in emacs from triggering the HUD. Edit: just realized how extensively I use the ALT key in the terminal: a quick tap of ALT+B to move back a word loses focus of the terminal and brings up the HUD. Aghch

• 12.04 sound keeps auto-muting when idle

  I just installed 12.04 on an HP8510W. Everything works fine except for one weird behavior which I have noticed. When ever there is no audio playing, the audio mute indicator on the laptop is on. As soon as I start playing a you tube video the mute indicator turns off and I get sound. Here is my pulse audio output which says that the sink is suspended because it is idle: Welcome to PulseAudio! • Backtrack 5 R2 Dual-Boot w/Windows 7 No Longer Loads

  A while back, I installed Backtrack 5 R2 to Dual Boot on a Windows 7 PC. It worked fine for a while, but now when I try to load it, the screen gets all messed up (tried to get a picture with my phone, but it wasn't working too well). The last line before it freezes says: fb: conflicting fb hw usage: nouveaufb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver Since it last worked, the only changes I can think of are that the computer is now connected via ethernet cable to the router, and I upgraded the graphics card (to nvidia). Because of the last line, I personally would put my money on the latter, but I still have no clue how to fix this. Can someone help me? Thanks!

  An outside company is redoing our company Intranet. During some basic usage I disovered that the "User Edit" screens, with the "Password: *" boxes have the password in plain text, with the text box "type=password" to "hide" the password. The passwords are not store in the database as plain text, they are stored encrypted using "rijndael-256" cypher using the mcrypt module. I know that if I encrypt a password with SHA*, the password is "Unrecoverable" via one-way encryption. Is the same of MCrypt Rijndael-256 encryption? Shouldn't an encrypted password be un-recoverable? Are they blowing smoke up my rear or just using the wrong technology?

Is the best way to store sessions in: Database (more reliable, but high bottleneck, slow speed, not good for high database usage websites)? • Can Google Translate's audio files be used in a game?

  For my game, I need text-to-speech. Since it's Android, I decided to settle for MP3s, since the range of words spoken is few. For my prototype, I'm using Google Translate to generate the audio since it has awesome pronounciation across multiple languages. But can I use it in production? What if I sell my game for $1 on the app store? All I can find on SE is that the API may be LGPL, and that the licensing page mentions the API is only available for academic research -- nothing more. My usage is a bit different; I'm actually capturing the audio bits and using those instead. I'm curious to know the license for this; I can't find anything with my Google-fu.

  Which is more common, creating a new variable versus assigning an existing variable (field, array element etc - anything that syntactically uses the assignment operator)? The reason I ask is that I'm designing a new language, and wondering which of these two operations should get the shorter syntax. It's not intended to be a pure functional language, or the question wouldn't arise, so I'd ideally like to count usage across large existing code bases in procedural and object-oriented languages like C, C++ and Java, though as far as I can see there isn't an easy way to do this automatically, and going by memory and eyeball, neither is obviously more common than the other.

• Consuming too much power on a Dell 15R

  I'm new to Ubuntu, and I've just installed Ubuntu 11.10, and I must say I really like it a lot. I'm getting used to Ubuntu faster than I thought but the only issue I'm having is the power consumption. I have a " dell 15R with BIOS a07" and I uninstalled Ubuntu 11.04 because of some glitches I hated. None of those appear on this Ubuntu but now my computer discharges way too quick. when I check the power icon, it states that I have like 3:45 min remaining, which is fairly the same as what win7 and Ubuntu 11.04 used to tell me but 15 min later I check again and it gives me only 1:15 min remaining. Also, my computer seems to get a lot hotter than it used to. Is there more options to control the power usage on my laptop?

  I am going over the memory architecture for my game and even though I know my memory budgets may not be final, I at the point where I can start using them in a general sense. I know that I will need several allocators (for systems such as audio, rendering, etc) but I am unsure of how they will be accessed. I do not use singletons, so I can't just have something such as AudioManager::GetInstance().get_allocator(). Instead, I need to find a different method of usage but I am not sure of how. • Is C++11 Uniform Initialization a replacement for the old style syntax?

  I understand that C++11's uniform initialization solves some syntactical ambiguity in the language, but in a lot of Bjarne Stroustrup's presentations (particularly those during the GoingNative 2012 talks), his examples primarily use this syntax now whenever he is constructing objects. Is it recommended now to use uniform initialization in all cases? What should the general approach be for this new feature as far as coding style goes and general usage?   Hey, I am trying to figure out why a website's drop down box will not show any options. The data file for this drop down box comes from a microsoft access .mde file. The file is present and after the last update was working fine. Some changes happened to the site, i.e. text got added along with some photos. Im not saying this was when the drop down box went bad, but when it was discovered these were the only changes made. The data file seems fine as it is worked with everyday.   Imagine I have three Ubuntu computers home, laptop, beach-house. They all have the same version of Ubuntu, 10.04 installed, and are kept up to date from the repositories. I use f-spot, thunderbird, and google-chrome on all of the computers. Is there a way to keep the data and configuration in sync across them, without requiring constant connectivity for normal (non-synchronous) usage? For example, they should be usable without network connectivity, so something like NFS won't work. An ideal solution would not require manual action to start the syncing process.

To keep the client objects in sync with the sever objects, I want the server to send the key/value dictionary every frame for each object. What data-structure/algorithm will allow me to send a list of key/value dictionaries using the least amount of bits? Bonus constraint 1: For each type of object, the values of some keys change more often than others. Bonus constraint 2: Memory usage on the server side is relatively expensive.

• Why does the BADSIG/"Untrusted sources" error recur forever?

  On at least a dozen occasions, I've spent 2-3 hours figuring out how to get Ubuntu 11.10-12.10 to either update or acquire software from software center, or both. I want to fix whatever is causing the BADSIG problem once and for all; I've wasted so much time trying to get this to work well enough that I can rely on it, but the same problem comes back after a couple weeks of normal updates and software center usage. Don't refer me to a standard posted solution on the web---whatever it is, I've used it more times than you have. The question isn't whether I can get it to work right this afternoon. I can. The question is what is causing the problem to recur regularly across 3 releases. Notice: I use this computer 4-5 hours per week and I do little on it. PDFs, Latex, FireFox, Mendeley, and that's it. I don't constantly install new software, and I don't fiddle with things unnecessarily.
