• Mountable online storage (no syncing)

  I have a Linux VPS that I would like to turn into a media server. Like most cheap VPS's, it has a fairly small storage capacity. What I would like to do is attach the box to an online backup system such as SpiderOak or DropBox, where the files would reside and be directly accessible to either a webserver or media server software. Since the VPS hdd is small, I do not want the files to be synced to it. I would like a storage system that is online only. Ideally mountable like a network drive. Are there any services that suit my needs, or workarounds for services such as SpiderOak that do not require syncing?

• Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed? • Amazon EC2 instances changes server time/date on reboots and other time weirdness

  I have a windows instance up in EC2. I manually set the timezone to Pacific. 1) For some reason using window's built in time sync doesn't work in the instance...but whatever. I turn off automatic time syncing... but 2) On reboot the time on the server changes! For example, if i reboot it at 4PM on Wednesday, when the server comes back up it will read 12 noon on Thursday! As a result any access to Amazon's other services like SImpleDB fail because the timestamps generated are too far off the current time. Has anyone seen this or figured this out?

• Computer Flashes Out?

  We have a strange problem with our computers at my school. They are all Latitude 2100 Netbooks. At random points (I can't seem to find a pattern) the screen will turn a single color (red, green, black, brown, etc.) To fix this, the computer must be put to sleep, and brought back up. They have integrated graphics, but I can't imagine that if it was a bug with the computer itself, that every single computer would do this. Is there any way I could find out the problem that's causing this. Some diagnostic tool? Thanks. Edit: Forgot, they all have windows.

When I run this: curl --ssl https://www.google.com I get this error: curl: (60) SSL certificate problem: unable to get local issuer certificate More details here: http://curl.haxx.se/docs/sslcerts.html curl performs SSL certificate verification by default, using a "bundle" of Certificate Authority (CA) public keys (CA certs). If the default bundle file isn't adequate, you can specify an alternate file using the --cacert option. If this HTTPS server uses a certificate signed by a CA represented in the bundle, the certificate verification probably failed due to a problem with the certificate (it might be expired, or the name might not match the domain name in the URL). If you'd like to turn off curl's verification of the certificate, use the -k (or --insecure) option.

• How to troubleshoot a service failure?

  I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

  Is there any way to have Windows 7 hibernate Bob's account when switched to Mary's account and vice versa? I.e.: Bob is logged in Bob clicks Start shutdown switch user Bob's session is saved to disk Mary logs in Mary's session is restored as it was when Bob's turn started Both are heavy users (30+ chrome tabs open, multiple documents, multiple spreadsheets, music playing, etc) I would like to set up the system so that each gets the full use of the computer while still having all their open apps the way they left them. I suppose I could try setting up a VM for each, but I'd rather not add anything else to the mix here if I don't have to. This is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit running on a Lenovo G550 laptop

• WEB based HPC cluster node management

  Hello, i am working on my school diploma thesis. The main goal is to create web based application where logged users could see free and busy nodes, turn them on and off, see what process they are running etc. Figured out that i could do something like this - write some cron daemon that would run every 30seconds or so, and it could run ping utility for each node to find out if it is on or off, then write results to some file. Then from my web app (i will write in PHP) i could read the info. Will it be a good solution? How would you suggest me to do it? And finally, is there any existing solutions (it may not be a definetly ewb based) for managment of cluster nodes?

• Visual Studio 2012 Installation fails on Windows 7

  I am trying to install Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine, but installation fails. I tried to install all version (premium, ultimate etc..) but getting below error. Machine is not domain joined and logged in as administrative user. I was using Security Essentials but turn it off before the installation. Installation source is from MSDN. Error log is too big to upload, important portion from the log: [2B6C:2580][2012-09-16T23:06:40]: MUX: ERROR: The type initializer for 'System.Windows.Media.FontFamily' threw an exception.

• What does a red icon in XP's "Unlock Computer" dialog mean?

  A user was working from home and had a colleague turn on her computer so she could remote desktop to it. All worked fine, but when she came into the office and used her computer for a while then locked it the computer icon had a red screen, instead of blue. Like in the following mockup: Mockup of red computer screen. It didn't cause any problems and it went away when she rebooted, but I was intrigued to find out whether there was something that caused it or if it was just a windows oddity. I believe she just closed the remote desktop session (without really logging off) from home and then disconnected from the VPN before coming to the office. Any ideas?

• How to rotate log files when running pyapns and twistd

  I use pyapns (Iphone push server) which in turn uses twisted (twistd daemon). twistd daemon produces twistd.log files. It rotates them to twistd.log.1, twistd.log.2 and so on when twistd.log reaches 1MB but it doesn't use logrotate so I guess it's built in. The problem is that this continues forever and that old log files are never deleted. This eventually fills my disk. I've tried to use logrotate or similar to rotate the logs, but then I would need to run logrotate very very often since I need to rotate BEFORE twistd.log reaches 1MB. This could happen within a second for all I know depending on how much log is produced. So how could I logrotate without hacking pyapns/twistd scripts?

  I just installed Windows 7 Enterprise along with some development tools. I didn't see IIS (the management console) anywhere in the start menu. I went to Turn Windows Features On or Off and saw that indeed IIS was present. Even http://localhost/ responded. I even turned all IIS features off (uninstalled them) and back on (rebooting each time). I still don't get IIS on my start menu. I also tried just launching MMC and adding the IIS snap-in, but that too, is absent. How can I manage the IIS on my box?

• nVidia Control Panel Won't Recognize SLI

  So yesterday I bought a brand new, 1,000W PSU to replace my 650W one and to allow for SLI. I install it and my second card (both are GTX 560 ti cards). I reinstalled my drivers and my system recognizes both cards. The control panel says "GTX 560 ti x2", I can select between them for Physx, sound output, picture output (although I only have one hooked up to my monitor), etc. But the kicker is I can't turn on SLI. Everything I've read says I'll get a balloon notification saying I can use SLI and the control panel will have a new section, etc, but none of those things happens. Anyone have any ideas? System: Win7 Professional x64 2x GTX 560 ti 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 1,000W Xion PSU 8GB RAM (Can't think of my motherboard right now) Note: My PSU and MOBO both say they're SLI certified and I'm using an SLI bridge. • Why screen freezes in Windows 7 and Vista?

  On Windows 7 and Vista I use auto-hide task bar and turn off graphic card after 1-2 minutes. When I want to use my desktop again screen freezes sometimes for 10 seconds. What I do does not effect anything immediately but cursor moves. For example if I click Firefox bookmark it opens when screen unfreezes. This happens at any of my computers and about a month after new installation. I don't think that problem is related with the drivers.

• Rsync like windows backup tool

  Hi, I need to backup some windows machines and have been unable to find the proper tool. What I need is a tool that does efficient copying of changed files to a windows network location, like Rsync does. In turn, the server will then back that up using rdiff-backup, a tool which does very clever incremental backups. Right now I'm using windows' 7 included backup feature, but I really don't get that. It's too much off-topic, but it doesn't suffice (seems buggy as well). I looked into Amanda, but as soon as it wanted to install MySQL, I aborted. I also tried Deltacopy, but unfortunately, I don't remember what the problem with that was... Any advice for an rsync like tool that just does daily syncs to a network location?

• Why does my computer slow down so much when attaching Bluetooth dongle?

  I have a Bluetooth dongle and I plugged it into my work laptop (a Dell Latitude D830). Windows detects the Generic Bluetooth USB or similar and then proceeds to go incredibly slow with a process, avp.exe¹, taking 50% CPU. The System Idle process is getting most of the other 50% CPU and the avp.exe process is only at Normal priority. The machine doesn't seem to recover, so I had to turn the power off and reboot. Now, I haven't installed the drivers yet for the device, which I am doing now and I expect it to resolve the problem, so I am not asking how to fix this. I would rather know why Windows goes so slow in the first place. What is it trying to do and failing at so badly that it barely crawls? ¹ Part of Kaspersky Internet Security suite

• windvd aacs keys update dosn't work

  A relative has a viao htpc, which has blue ray. The player I believe is a viao branded version of windvd with blue ray support. Every time it loads it asks if it should update the aacs keys as they are out of date. If you select yes nothing happens. The package just sits there forever saying that you shouldn't turn it off. I have tried to go to the products website (which is now corel) registering and downloading the keys, but the key download page does nothing. Has anyone had a similar problem, or are there any suggestions to get around it?

• Why is systemd not setting my system time?

  I'm running Arch Linux. Recently, when I turn on my PC, the system time is set to 1:00 1 January 1970 - presumably the 1:00 o'clock is from the timezone shift. Does anyone have any ideas why systemd isn't setting my system time correctly? Some useful output (I think)... • Prevent audio recording applications from picking up non-microphone audio output

  When talking to people over Mumble/Teamspeak/Ventrilo, I have a few who are broadcasting all of their audio output (e.g. music playing in the background, game sounds, etc.) whenever they are sending -- in addition to the microphone signal. I don't have this problem myself, so it's hard for me to troubleshoot remotely, but I'm interested in collecting solutions for this problem for Windows XP, Vista and 7, so that I can link them to this question. Links to other related SU questions are highly welcome as well, but I couldn't find any. Most people seem to try to either get microphone to feed back into the audio output or turn exactly that off, which is different from this problem. I'm talking about the opposite problem, the output being fed into the input.

• Sony Vaio dead keyboard

  I have strange problem with my almost new laptop. Aftear I leave it turned on for some hours and back to use it, it was printing something like ^[[2~ on the screen and I cannot stop it. After rebooting it did not show any activity. After few hours I managed to turn it on by hiting random keys at keyboard. I starts that way but I have to use external keyboard to type anything. When I randomly stroke the keys when is turned on, it sometimes print that unrecognised characters. It works the same way at linux and windows (ubuntu, windows 7). What can be the reason it started to work so strange and is there anyway to fix it without sending it to warranty and waiting few weeks? :/ I dont remember to make it wet, but they may be something like cigaretes ashes in it, I could not remember...

• IIS7 VPS Hosting Server Configuration

  I have just registered a Windows 2008 VPS hosting account which I plan on running a couple of web sites on. In the past I have just used shared hosting in which everything is set up for me, so need a few pointers. When I register a new domain it asks for a couple of name servers. How do I set this up on my server? Can I just give it the IP address of the VPS server? Do I have to register some web sites with ns1, ns2 host headers in IIS? It's all a bit confusing when never done before. I have two web sites I plan on hosting. I configured both in IIS with a different IP address (the VPS plan has 2) but when trying to access the site via IP it always displays the default web site. If I turn off the default web site it just 404's. Is there any simple tutorials for setting up a couple of sites from scratch.

• Beginners advice on Small business network disk(s)

  We are having 10 PCs used by various user and presently use one network disk (a LaCie NAS) for all our data. Everything is Windows Vista and our collective IT hardware knowledge is minimal. This worked well generally. However, recently the disk freqently loses connection from the network (2-3 times per week) and the only way back seems to be the "turn it off and back on" trick. This obviously cant be any good for the disk. I understand that there are various more sophisticated ways of storing data and was wondering what people would recommend. One of the worries is obviously disk failure (either in part or as a whole) and the lack of continued availability due to network issues. I would guess that a disk which replicates data wouldnt work as a sole solution due to the network connection, but dont know what hardware (and/or software) would/could work in our case. In terms of size, we are looking at very small amounts, ie. less than 500 GB in total.

• How to get the Three.js import/export scripts into Blender on Ubuntu?

  I have been working with 3D primitives in Three.js, but now I want to import some models. I plan on using Blender, which I have just downloaded with: sudo apt-get install blender However, I was instructed to put the import/export scripts in the .blender/2.62/scripts/addons folder, but it does not exist! .blender/2.62 does exist, but it only has a config folder. The next thing I did is manually changed the script search path in Blender's preferences from // to my homefolder/scripts, which contained the required io_mesh_threejs folder (which, in turn had the .py scripts inside). I saved the changes, restarted Blender, but still nothing: in the menu there is no mention of Three.js at all! What do I do? It would be great if I knew the installation path for Blender, because maybe I could put those scripts there manually. Where should it be installed? • Port forwarding does not work always?

  I opened port 25374, this is eMule TCP port, then I use canyouseeme.org to check if it is really opened. I got the weird problem : when eMule is running, canyouseeme.org see my port. I got the message : "Success: I can see your service on xxx.xx.xxx.xx on port (25374) Your ISP is not blocking port 25374" When I close eMule then check the port again on canyouseeme.org I got : Error: I could not see your service on xxx.xx.xxx.xx on port (25374) Reason: Connection timed out But when I turn off the windows firewall I got a different error : Error: I could not see your service on xxx.xx.xxx.xx on port (25374) Reason: Connection refused Can anyone please explain to me why it happened like that and how to make the port always opened ?
