• Laptop overheating within minutes of start up

  I have a Dell Windows 7 Home Prem with an I7-720QM. More information on the computer can be found here http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/51CVCN1/configuration The Problem I am having is the computer will over heat unnaturally fast. From the time it takes from boot to when i can run my diagnostic tools which takes about two minutes the cpu temp is 86c after a few more minutes the cpu temp will reach 100 and the computer will black screen shut down. In total the the laptop can only be run for 3-5 minutes before completely shutting off. During this time there is nothing extensive running. After the laptop shuts down you have to wait for it to cool down or it will shut off even faster sometimes 7-15 seconds well still in the boot screen. Does anyone know what could be the problem maybe a sensor or is the computer fried?

• Unable to diagnose Windows 7 lockup

  Basic info: Laptop Dell Studio XPS 13 (Intel P9600, 4GB RAM, NVidia 9400M card, 256G Samsung PM800 SSD) Windows 7 Ultimate, as well as Fedora 14 Here's the deal - Windows would just lock up out of nowhere, no log entries, no dumps, no BSOD, it just freezes. This happens mostly when idle (but it happened when I was using it too) and does not follow a concrete time frame. No input is accepted - only solution is to hold the power button. Although this sounds like a clean cut hardware issue, the reason I'm willing to rule this out is that my primary OS is Fedora 14. It's been working fine for the past 2 years and I've been stress testing the hardware (intentionally or not) every once in a while with no issues. I would like to ask if there's any way to get a diagnostic output from Windows in a situation such as this. The next step in my testing is to leave it in Safe Mode overnight and see if it locks up but even if I do that, I still need to figure out what component freezes it up during normal operation.

• Bootable ISO to USB stick xp wuickest method

  My dog took a leak on my PC when I went out (ye funny), now it reandomly restarts - im convinced the HDD is failing because the Windows seagate diagnostic program fails on a few tests. I want to run this prior to windows in an attempt to try and recover sectors, the program includes an iso which can be written to cd and booted, but i dont have any cd's. I tried using unetbootin to create the bootable usb from the iso file (SeaToolsDOS222ALL.576.ISO) but it doesnt work. When i boot from the usb hdd unetbootin loads with "default" in the menu. No joy booting though. I checked the usb hdd in windows and all the files are there, extracted from the iso file, wont boot though. Any ideas? Im using windows xp, or

• UsrClass.dat does not load, any ideas on what to check?

  I have an odd problem where one of my users' UsrClass.dat hive does not load, which causes .NET ClickOnce applications to fail to start. They are one of several users on a Windows 2000 terminal server, all the others have no problem. Nothing is mentioned in any logs. I can manually load the hive to the correct HKEY_USERS\..._Classes location using REGEDT32, which works around the problem, but I've no idea what could be causing this in the first place. Any ideas what to check here, or any diagnostic tools or procedures that would help?

  How do I do factory reset on an EPSON Stylus Photo 1290 printer? The printer is refusing to work. It seems to be in some error state. I've tried re-installing drivers etc, but the printer itself seems to run some diagnostic routine when I switch it on, but will not do anything else. It will not move the carousel ready for me to change the printer cartridge or any other Is there'e some sequence of button presses on the printer to do a factory reset? • harddrive problem (usb external)

  Hey guys I am using a Maxtor One Touch 3 given to my by my uncle. It is connected through USB2.0 When I plug it in, XP installs it and says "the device is ready to use". But it dosnt show up on my computer. It dosn't even show up in disk mangement. I then install Acronis Disk Director (which detects it) but marks it as offline. if i try to change it to online, nothing happens. (actually the lights on the HD blink - meaning communication and goes back into offline mode). The lights on the HD return to a solid which mean "working properly". • I'm a SubVersion geek, why I should consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DRCS?

  I tried to understand the benefits of DRCS. I must recognize I still doesn't get it. Here are my current beliefs. I'm ready to destroy them thanks to your expertise. I know I'm probably resisting to change. I just want to evaluate how much that change will cost me. Merging hell can be solved by just applying good practices such as continuous integration. There is no such good practice than having a private branch for a few days when you are in a self managing team with real collaboration. I use branching for that for very rare cases, and I keep a branch for every major version, in which I fix bugs merged from the trunk. I see the value of committing offline then pushing online. But continuous integration can help on this too. I work on very large projects, and I never noticed SubVersion to be slow even when the server is 5000km away on the internet and my small connection (less than 1024D/128U). Harddisk space is cheap, so having a copy of source code locally doesn't look like a problem to me. I already have a full copy of the last version on my disk. I don't understand the distributed thing there (maybe THIS IS the key to my understanding?) I not new in the industry, and judging by my difficulty to understand, I don't think DRCS are easier to understand than SubVersion like. If fact, I don't understand... Doctor, give me your diagnostic.

  Exchange 2010, one-server installation (small production, I know not best practice) OWA Connectivity has been confirmed, Autodiscover is configured and working properly for EVERY other installation. Other user accounts tested on problem Outlook, none can connect. Windows Firewall is pre-configured by Group Policy, only modifications being related to remote management. Firewall has also been disabled during diagnostic period. Network discovery and file sharing is enabled on workstation as well. Windows 7 Professional, latest updates installed. Driving me nuts. Help, serverfault?

• My WD Caviar Green SATA HDD cannot be detected

  I have a WD 2TB Caviar Green SATA HDD. I used it as an external hard drive formatted to FAT32. The main purpose was to store my PS3 games. It worked fine and all of a sudden my PS3 stopped detecting it. I tried connecting it to my pc and the same result. I took it off from the enclosure and plugged it directly to my PC and used the BIOS setup. The BIOS setup detects my HDD but it says it's 0.0MB!!! I also tried the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and it wasn't much of use because the drive is not picking up by windows at all. Is my HDD dead? Is it beyond repair?

  I have a program that reads the contacts from my phone, but I can't export them from it. I'd like to use another program to read the contents of the controls on the original program. In this case, I would like to export the content of a dropdown list (combobox), containing these contacts. Can someone recommend a good program for this or recommend another method?   I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • Connect Ralink RT2571 to new PC

  I bought a new PC with the AsRock Z77 Extreme 4m motherboard, since this has no WLAN, I extracted the WLAN card from my old PC, a Ralink RT 2571 WF, an connected it to the new board. I downloaded the driver from http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support/support.php?sn=500 (the RT257x USB one) and installed it. In the device manager, an unknown device shows up, but if I tell it to search its driver, it does not find it (searching in the whole C partition). The Ralink Diagnostic Test says that the WLAN Card is disabled. I'm using Windows 7 64bit professional. Can anyone suggest me a solution to get my WLAN running?

Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this  message for you.    Please provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator. The following organization rejected your message: servername01.fqdn.com.   Problem: The SharePoint server relay rejects the message because it doesn't recognize the name.  You have set it up in Exchange, but you need to set up an alias in the SMTP service on the SharePoint server;   Solution: Configure an Alias Domain An alias domain is an alias of the default domain. You can set up alias domains that use the same settings as the default domain. Messages that are received by the SMTP Service for an alias domain are placed in the Drop folder that is designated for the default domain. To configure an alias domain, follow these steps: Start IIS Manager or open the IIS snap-in. Expand Server_name, where Server_name is the name of the server, and then expand the SMTP virtual server that you want (for example, Default SMTP Virtual Server). Right-click Domains, point to New, and then click Domain. The New SMTP Domain Wizard starts. Click Alias, and then click Next. Type a name for the alias domain in the Name box, and then click Finish. • Can't connect to Internet through WiFi, but can with cable

  I'm using Windows 7 32-bit, Toshiba Portege laptop. I want to connect to the WiFi, usually I can do that easily. But, I don't know.. maybe when I tried to install a Microsoft Research: Mesh Virtual WiFi that could connect more than 2 wireless networks. I wanna try in connecting both Wireless router and my personal Ad-Hoc. Now, my laptop don't recognize my WiFi, well, I can connect to the WiFi but it says: "Limited access" and doesn't really connect to the internet. But when I plug the LAN cable, it works. I know the problem is in the laptop's wireless connection or in the properties. Any help for this? UPDATE: The IP and DNS settings, I set to automatic, and when I ran diagnostic, Windows tells me that the wireless network adapter is the problem, but they told me to insert the LAN cable, so how to fix the wireless? They didn't tell me how to fix that.

• What could cause a file system to spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time?

  We've got DB2 LUW running on a RHEL box. We had a crash of DB2 and IBM came back and said that a file that DB2 was trying to access (through open64()) unmounted or became invalid. We have done nothing but restart the database and things seem to be running fine. Also, the file in question looks perfectly normal now: $ cd /db/log/TEAMS/tmsinst/NODE0000/TEAMS/T0000000/ $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT $ file C0000000.CAT C0000000.CAT: data $ lsattr C0000000.CAT ------------- C0000000.CAT $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT With those facts in hand (please correct me if I am mis-interpreting the data at hand) what could cause a file system to 'spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time'? What should my next step be? This is on Dell hardware and we ran their diagnostic tools against the hardware and it came back clean.

• How can I fix the #c3284d# malvertising hack on my website?

  For the past couple of weeks at semi regular intervals, this website has had the #c3284d# malware code inserted into some of its .php files. Also the .htaccess file had its equivelant code inserted. I have, on many occasions removed the malicious code, replaced files, changed the ftp password on my ftp client (which is CoreFTP), changed the connection method to FTPS for more secure storage of the password (instead of plain text). I have also scanned my computer several times using AVG and Windows Defender which have found no malware on my computer which might have been storing my ftp passwords. I used Sucuri SiteCheck to check my website which says my website is clean of malware which is bizarre because I just attempted to click one of the links on the site a minute ago and it linked me to another one of these random stats.php sites, even though it appears I have gotten rid of the #c3284d# code again (which will no doubt be re-inserted somehow in an hour or so).. Has anyone found an actual viable solution for this malware hack? I have done just about all of the things suggested here and here and the problem still persists. Currently when I click on a link within the sites navigation menu within Google Chrome I get googles Malware warning page: Warning: Something's Not Right Here! oxsanasiberians.com contains malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site. Google has found that malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it's possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed. Why not try again tomorrow or go somewhere else? We have already notified oxsanasiberians.com that we found malware on the site. I'm wondering if it is possible that the Google Chrome browser I am using has itself been hacked? Does anyone else get re-directed when clicking links on the the website?

• New functionality in TFS Build Manager &ndash; Managing Triggers and Build Resources

  Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful. • Power outage during disk wipe. What do I do now?

  I was using Roadkil Diskwipe on an external hard drive and the power went out. I had removed it from any outlet connection by the time power was restored to prevent power-spike damage (it's on a surge protector, but I didn't want to rely on that). My question is, where do I go from here? Obviously I don't care about preserving any data currently on it, I just want to make sure the drive itself is not terminally damaged. I'm running chkdsk (full), but I don't know if that's the correct step to assessing any damage. If it makes any difference, the hard drive was unallocated at the time of the outage, as Diskwipe requires that for it to run. Also, could something like this cause latent problems with the drive itself (i.e. serious issues that I won't be aware of when testing it now). I'd appreciate any program recommendations if chkdsk is not the most appropriate diagnostic route. Thank you.

• Failing Seagate HDD - Not Recognised

  I am having a look at a friend's computer which contains a 500GB Seagate HDD. Unfortunately the HDD is not recognised by the BIOS menu and it beeps 11 times upon powerup. I've moved the HDD to another laptop but the problem remains. I've downloaded SeaTools for DOS (Seagate's Diagnostic tool) but unfortunately to no avail and the disc remains unseen when using this DOS boot disc. The HDD is only 6 months old so I'm very surprised at this but it appears a common problem with Seagate 2.5" HDDs as well as other HDDs manufactured by Seagate. I intend to try it in an external caddy on Thursday when back in work and also through a forensic writeblocker but just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions? I am of the opinion it is some chip on the HDD board which prevents it spinning due to a fault. If so, I've lost to deactivate this just so I can simply recover the data on the drive and start with a new disc. Thanks

  Windows 8's Blue Screen of Death is different from the previous Windows versions' one: In order to find out what caused the problem you need to write down or remember the search term it presents you with. The two search terms I have seen suggested so far are SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. Both of them are quite generic terms. While it’s nice not to have to look at a blue screen full of text, the previous BSoD was more informative than the Windows 8 BSoD, since it contained a detailed error code (information for diagnostic purposes that was collected as the operating system performed a bug check), which could get you closer to tracking down the root of the problem. How can I get more information about the error Windows 8 has encountered, in order to track down the root of the problem?

• How to know or change the size of the Windows Event Log from a program under Windows XP? [closed]

  I ran into a weird problem on a Windows XP system. My local service app logs its diagnostic messages into the Windows Event Log, so at some point those messages stopped being logged. I thought that the issue was in my code, but then I discovered that other processes can't log messages either. So I was wondering, is there a limit on the Windows Event Log size? PS. I guess I need to write this specifically -- I need to know/change the size from a command line or an API.
