Doing so usually would allow me to reuse my code and have a more general solution for a problem that might (or might not) come up again. Then this voice in my head says, just solve the problem dummy its that easy! Why spend more time than you have to?   A user in the forums (http://forums.asp.net) is asking how to insert  sub rows in GridView and also add delete functionality for the inserted sub rows. In this post I'm going to demonstrate how to this in ASP.NET WebForms.  The basic idea to achieve this is we just need to insert row data in the DataSource that is being used in GridView since the GridView rows will be generated based on the DataSource data. To make it more clear then let's build up a sample application. To start fire up Visual Studio and create a WebSite or Web Application project and then add a new WebForm. The FillData() method is a method that returns a DataTable and basically creates a dummy data in the DataTable to be used as the GridView DataSource. You can replace the code in that method if you want to use actual data from database but for the purpose of this example I just fill the DataTable with a dummy data on it. The BindGridVew is a method that handles the actual binding of GridVew. The InsertRow() is a method that returns a DataRow. This method handles the insertion of the sub row. Now in the LinkButton OnClick event, we casted the sender to a LinkButton to determine the specific object that fires up the event and get the row values. We then reference the Data from ViewState to get the current data that is being used in the GridView. If the LinkButton text is "Insert" then we will insert new row to the DataSource ( in this case the DataTable) based on the rowIndex if not then Delete the sub row that was added. • Evolution - exchange-connector, Rackspace global catalog server

  I'm (trying to) switch to Ubuntu from Windows XP on my work laptop. Unfortunately, one of the dealbreakers is that I need full Exchange contact/calendar syncing. Our email is hosted by Rackspace (owa.mailseat.com). We login using the usernames of the format [email protected]. I'm trying to set up Evolution to use this account, using exchange-connector-setup-2.32. The first step, entering the OWA URL, usename and password works, and progresses to step 2, where I need to enter a Global Catalog server. I have no idea what to enter here. Everything fails. My questions are - What is the "Global Catalog server" - can I enter/run some dummy server here? - If its necessary, where can I get the information from this? I have a Windows XP machine synced up using Outlook 2007, so if I need to gather any information from that setup I can.

• Recommended requirements when outsourcing xhtml/css site building?

  I'm considering outsourcing a part of our web application development project for freelancers, namely the site building part. What I mean by site building is the process of creating the xhtml/css template files, with dummy content, from a psd file (or any other graphical layout file). The resulting xhtml/css files will be used by our developers as templates for cms based page rendering. The cms in this case is Drupal, but that might not be of much relevance. I'm looking for a good set of requirements, that will result in good quality xhtml/css code, complying with today's standards leaves little to the freelancer developer's imagination in terms of what I need I'm thinking about requirements like: Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional document type, validated by validator.w3.org Identical rendering in all modern browsers (FF, Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE7-8) and also in IE6 All opening and closing block-level elements should be properly commented, referencing the functional part of the user interface they belong to (menu, toolbar, content, etc) No inline CSS definitions And so on. How would you organize a list like that? What requirements would you add?

  While preparing my slides e demos for the forthcoming SQL Server Conference 2012 in Italy, I’ve come across a nice addition to DTS Expression language which I never noticed before and that seems unknown also to the blogosphere: REPLACENULL. REPLACENULL is the same of ISNULL in T-SQL. It’s *very* useful especially when loading a fact table of your BI solution when you need to replace unexisting reference to dimension with dummy values. • How can I unit test a class which requires a web service call?

  I'm trying to test a class which calls some Hadoop web services. The code is pretty much of the form: method() { ...use Jersey client to create WebResource... ...make request... ...do something with response... } e.g. there is a create directory method, a create folder method etc. Given that the code is dealing with an external web service that I don't have control over, how can I unit test this? I could try and mock the web service client/responses but that breaks the guideline I've seen a lot recently: "Don't mock objects you don't own". I could set up a dummy web service implementation - would that still constitute a "unit test" or would it then be an integration test? Is it just not possible to unit test at this low a level - how would a TDD practitioner go about this?

• lubuntu - Sound card detected but no sound

  I installed Lubuntu 12.10 on my old laptop (Sharp Mebius PC-MR80J), but sound does not work. Here are things I tried. aplay -l does not output anything. When I run alsamixer, I see only one bar that says "Beep". I installed pavucontrol, pulseaudio, pulseaudio-utils and libgtk-3-0 and checked output devices, but I only see "Dummy ouput" and there is no hardware output devices. cat /proc/asound/cards returns the following. 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0xfeb38000 irq 40 cat /proc/asound/devices outputs the following. 1: : sequencer 2: [ 0- 1]: hardware dependent 3: [ 0- 0]: hardware dependent 4: [ 0] : control 33: : timer The laptop was running Windows XP before and sound (both input and outpu) was working. What can I do now?

  With Ruby on Rails I've usually used Forgery for generating dummy data for testing. I've noticed recently that several clients and tutorials are using Faker They both seem fairly similar in use and popularity: Faker 128 forks, 418 watchers. Forgery 59 forks, 399 watchers. They both seem similar in how current they are: Faker Most updates are from 6 and 9 months ago. Forgery Most updates are from 4 and 9 months ago. The one distinguishing factor I've found so far is that Forgery seems like it has better instructions. Are there any particular benefits or disadvantages to using one over the other? Have you ever needed to switch from one to another for a particular reason?

• Which of VLC's dependencies causes sound device detection?

  I am setting up a headless music server based on the minimal Ubuntu image. After having installed the packages openssh-server,pulseaudio, libmad0,flac,liboff0,libid3tag0,libvorbis0a,ffmpeg, mpd,mpc,mpdscribble, paman,paprefs,pavumeter neither my internal soundcard nor the external DAC where detected by pulseaudio, that is pactl list did only list the dummy devices. Several reboots did not change that. The hardware devices are detected properly: ~$ lsusb | grep Texas Bus 002 Device 002: ID 08bb:2706 Texas Instruments Japan ~$ lspci | grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Following a hunch, I installed vlc with all dependencies. After a reboot, both devices are detected! ~$ pactl list | grep "Sink: alsa_output" Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.usb-Burr-Brown_from_TI_USB_Audio_DAC-00-DAC.analog-stereo Now I would like to remove VLC again but keep the devices. The question is: which of the many dependencies of VLC enables proper device detection? And why on earth is it not a dependency of pulseaudio?

• C# Open Source software that is useful for learning Design Patterns

  In college I took a class in Expert Systems. The language the book taught (CLIPS) was esoteric - Expert Systems: Principles and Programming, Fourth Edition. I remember having a tough time with it. So, after almost failing the class, I needed to create the most awesome Expert System for my final presentation. I chose to create an expert system that would calculate risk analysis for a person's retirement portfolio. In short, the system would provide the services normally performed by one's financial adviser. In other words, based on personality, age, state of the macro economy, and other factors, should one's portfolio be conservative, moderate, or aggressive? In the appendix of the book (or on the CD-ROM), there was this in-depth example program for something unrelated to my presentation. Over my break, I read and re-read every line of that program until I understood it to the letter. Even though it was unrelated, I learned more than I ever could by reading all of the chapters. My presentation turned out to be pretty damn good and I received praises from my professor and classmates. So, the moral of the story is..., by understanding other people's code, you can gain greater insight into a language/paradigm than by reading canonical examples. Still, to this day, I am having trouble with everyday design patterns such as the Factory Pattern. I would like to know if anyone could recommend open source software that would help me understand the Gang of Four design patterns, at the very least. I have read the books, but I'm having trouble writing code for the concepts in the real world. Perhaps, by studying code used in today's real world applications, it might just "click". I realize a piece of software may only implement one kind of design pattern. But, if the pattern is an implementation you think is good for learning, and you know what pattern to look for within the source, I'm hoping you can tell me about it. For example, the System.Linq.Expressions namespace has a good example of the Visitor Pattern. The client calls Expression.Accept(new ExpressionVisitor()), which calls ExpressionVisitor (VisitExtension), which calls back to Expression (VisitChildren), which then calls Expression (Accept) again - wooah, kinda convoluted. The point to note here is that VisitChildren is a virtual method. Both Expression and those classes derived from Expression can implement the VisitChildren method any way they want. This means that one type of Expression can run code that is completely different from another type of derived Expression, even though the ExpressionVisitor class is the same in the Accept method. (As a side note Expression.Accept is also virtual). In the end, the code provides a real world example that you won't get in any book because it's kinda confusing. To summarize, If you know of any open source software that uses a design pattern implementation you were impressed by, please list it here. • What is the simplest human readable configuration file format?

  Current configuration file is as follows: mainwindow.title = 'test' mainwindow.position.x = 100 mainwindow.position.y = 200 mainwindow.button.label = 'apply' mainwindow.button.size.x = 100 mainwindow.button.size.y = 30 logger.datarate = 100 logger.enable = True logger.filename = './test.log' This is read with python to a nested dictionary: { 'mainwindow':{ 'button':{ 'label': {'value':'apply'}, ... }, 'logger':{ datarate: {'value': 100}, enable: {'value': True}, filename: {'value': './test.log'} }, ... } Is there a better way of doing this? The idea is to get XML type of behavior and avoid XML as long as possible. The end user is assumed almost totally computer illiterate and basically uses notepad and copy-paste. Thus the python standard "header + variables" type is considered too difficult. The dummy user edits the config file, able programmers handle the dictionaries. Nested dictionary is chosen for easy splitting (logger does not need or even cannot have/edit mainwindow parameters).

• Sound works for only one user at a time

  I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

Should I start with the CSS, design and look&feel using dummy data first, or should I program in the logic, events and output, and style it later? • aticonfig detects all graphics cards, but amdcccle shows the cards as disabled

  I been having the strangest problem since few days ago. I have 3 ATI graphics cards and the aticonfig --list-adapter shows the following output * 0. 01:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series 1. 02:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series 2. 05:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series when i do aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f it generates the correct X config also. but after rebooting the output only show on primary monitor and when i look in amdcccle it shows the other 2 adapters as disabled. I tried with monitors attached and dummy plugs both but the situation doesn't change. Any idea whats causing this? also right clicking and making the adapter enabled in amdcccle and saving changes causes the X config to only have the adapter section and no screen section. after reboot the situation stays the same.

  This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

• No sound after clean install

  Did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10 and everything working great except for the sound. Ubuntu doesn't even seem to be recognizing the fact my HP dv6000 has the capability of making sound! I have the dummy output problem, and when I try to open alsamixer using terminal I get the message that no such file or directory exists. I can't get it to recognize any soundcards or audio devices at all. I've been working on the problem for a couple days now and have even taken the laptop apart to ensure that all cables are properly attached... When I go into the PhoenixBIOS there are no sound options that I can find. The laptop does make a loud beep if I press buttons in the BIOS, but once it boots to the hard drive, the thing is mute. HELP!

• No analog audio in 13.10

  I've installed 13.10 on a machine that was previously running Windows 8, and audio output isn't working out of the box. It worked fine in Windows, and the speakers work fine when hooked up to a laptop, so it must an incompatibility between Ubuntu and the motherboard. If I go to sound settings, "Built-in Audio" is selected (SPDIF is also available). This is an Intel Z77 motherboard with an integrated Creative CA0132 sound chipset. I've tried booting a live image of 13.10 (to check for a corrupt install), and the same problem exists. If I boot a live image of 13.04, the only audio output listed in sound settings is a "dummy" card. I've already tried basic troubleshooting steps, such as removing pulseaudio config directories, force-restarting alsa, and making sure the speakers aren't muted in the alsa mixer. At this point, I'm totally stumped :(

For getting my printer to work with Ubuntu 10.10 i've read many threads about a suggested workaround. there it's suggested to install libcupsys2_1.3.9-17ubuntu3.9_all.deb so that the canon driver should again do it's work with ubuntu. But i can't figure out what this package exactly is and like to understand what i do before i install it. in some thread they call it a dummy package, in others it's called a transitional package. However there should have been a reason why the ubuntu developers had deprecated libcupsys. So would you recommend it?

• Get your picture on the screen at MIX11: Help me create a repository of sample data

  Here is your chance to get your picture on the big screen during my MIX11 presentation in April this year. I need to create a small repository of sample data for my demos. So instead of tapping in my imagination and creating dummy users (or reusing past information I already used in other demos), I thought I would appeal to the amazing community: Send me an email with the following information. I will include the first 30 users into my sample data repository and use your info in my demo. First Name Last Name Date of birth Picture Link to Facebook profile (optional) Disclaimer: The data will only be running locally on my hard drive. The demos will however be filmed and the videos made public. By providing this information, you explicitly consent to this data being used in demos at MIX11 and possibly in following conferences.
