• Are there macro facility for Java or C#?

  Macros are useful. Therefore, I occasionally bemoan the absence of macros in Java and C#. Macros allow me to force in-line but allow me the code-manageability of non-macro code. Is there any Java- or C#-based project/product somewhere out there that effectively allow macros or specifying in-line expansion. I am thinking of something like @macro public void hello(int x){ ... } or when I call a method, an @inline annotation preceding the call would effect the called-method to be in-lined. or, should I need to know that I should just trust the compiler to make the best the decision for me that at the best of its analysis it might in-line a call. I hope this question will not lead to debating the pro/cons/usefulness of macros.

I'm interested in hearing what worked for you and what didn't and how that affected the project both during and after implementation (i.e. during ongoing operation, maintenance and expansion). In addition to these lessons learned, please describe the project by including a quick overview of: The data sources and targets. Specifics are not necessary, but I'd like to know general technology categories e.g. RDBMS table, application accessed via a proprietary socket protocol, web service, reporting tool. The overall architecture of the project as related to data flows. Different human roles in the project (was this all done by one engineer? Did it include analysts with a particular expertise?) Any third-party products utilized, commercial or open source.

• the problem about different treatment to __VA_ARGS__ when using VS 2008 and GCC

  I am trying to identify a problem because of an unusual usage of variadic macros. Here is the hypothetic macro: #define va(c, d, ...) c(d, __VA_ARGS__) #define var(a, b, ...) va(__VA_ARGS__, a, b) var(2, 3, printf, “%d %d %d\n”, 1); For gcc, the preprocessor will output printf("%d %d %d\n", 1, 2, 3) but for VS 2008, the output is printf, “%d %d %d\n”, 1(2, 3); I suspect the difference is caused by the different treatment to VA_ARGS, for gcc, it will first expand the expression to va(printf, "%d %d %d\n", 1, 2, 3), and treat 1, 2, 3 as the VA_ARGS for macro va. But for VS 2008, it will first treat b as VA_ARGS for macro va, and then do the expansion. Which one is correct interpretation for C99 variadic macro? or my usage falls into an undefined behavior?

• How to store millions of pictures about 2k each in size

  We're creating an ASP.Net MVC site that will need to store 1 million+ pictures, all around 2k-5k in size. From previous ressearch, it looks like a file server is probably better than a db (feel free to comment otherwise). Is there anything special to consider when storing this many files? Are there any issues with Windows being able to find the photo quickly if there are so many files in one folder? Does a segmented directory structure need to be created, for example dividing them up by filename? It would be nice if the solution would scale to at least 10 million pictures for potential future expansion needs.

  I am working on expansion of my jQuery plug-in authoring knowledge, just playing around with my own ideas for learning benefits. So i was wondering how you guys tackle the need of plugin executing without any user specific input. So I have a need for plug-in that executes right away after document is ready, without any user's specific input just as long as doc is loaded, so the only way I see how to execute plug-in on it's own is to attach handler to ready listener that executes my function which I extended the jQuery with. And because this needs to be self enclosed, part of the code, I attach handler to event listener within the function. So how else could one tackle this? Any take at this is appreciated. Thank you in advance everyone.

• Is there any valid reason radians are used as the inputs to trig function in many modern languages?

  Is there any pressing reason trig functions should use radian inputs in modern programming languages? As far as I know radians are typically ugly to deal with except in three cases: (1) You want to compute an arc length and you know the angle of the arc and (2) You need to do symbolic calculus with trig functions (3) certain infinite series expansion look prettier if the input is in radians. None of these scenarios seem like a worthy justification for every programming language I am familiar with using radian inputs for Sin, Cos, Tangent, etc... The third one sounds good because it might mean one gets faster computations using radians (very slightly faster- the cost of one additional floating point multiplication ) , but I am dubious even of that because most commonly the developer had to take an extra step to put the angle in radians in the first place. The other two are ridiculous justifications for all the added obscurity.

  My Question: How do you get the filepath to the current wallpaper? Expansion: I'm writing an app that will let you change the wallpaper easily between different presets. I want to store the filepath of the available wallpapers in my database. What I've tried: WallpaperManger.getWallpaperInfo() or WallpaperManger.getDrawable(). Neither seem to contain the actual location of the file. Any help would be appreciated! :D Thanks! Also, I'm including live-wallpapers. Thanks!

  I transform XML to (sort of) HTML with XSL stylesheets (using Apache Xalan). In XML there can be entities like &mdash;, which must be left as is. In beginning of XML file I have a doctype which references these entities. What should I do for entity to be left unchanged? <!DOCTYPE article [ <!ENTITY mdash "&mdash;"><!-- em dash --> ]> gives me SAXParseException: Recursive entity expansion, 'mdash' when encountering &mdash in XML text.

• Get last element of pipeline in powershell

  Hi, This might be weird, but stay with me. I want to get only the last element of a piped result to be assigned to a varaiable. I know how I would do this in "regular" code of course, but since this must be a one-liner. More specifically, I'm interested in getting the file extension when getting the result from an FTP request ListDirectoryDetails. Since this is done within a string expansion, I can't figure out the proper code. Currently I'm getting the last 3 hars, but that is real nasty. • What advantages can I get from learning C++ if I'm mainly a C# Programmer?

  Hello, Recently I've started to notice a lot of smirks and generally rude comments whenever I mention C#. Everyone I talk to either says learn Python or learn C++. Python is a nice language, I get it. But I don't find much use for it right now (for my use cases), and C++ I heard is a faster language (not sure). So my question is this, what advantage can I get from learning C++ (besides the knowledge and expansion of my horizons), when I mainly program in C#. If anyone can make a legitimate claim, I'll for sure look into learning the language because let's face it, I trust you guys. Thanks so much for all the help.

• Modulation of adding new Strings -> Method calls.

  If I have a program that does the following: if(input=='abc'){do x} if(input=='def'){do y} In the future, I may want to add another piece of code like so: if(input=='ghy'){do x} As you can see, I am adding a new 'if' statement for a different conditional BUT using the SAME function X. The code in future has potential to have lots of different IF statements (or switches) all of which are comparing a string vs a string and then performing a function. Considering the future expansion, I was wondering if there is a possible 'neater', 'modular' way of achieving the same results. It's a shame I can't combine the String with a Method call in a hashtable (String, method) in Java. That way I could just store any new procedures inside a hashtable and grab the relevant method for that String. Any ideas? Thank you

  When Fiddler is not on Mac OS X or Ubuntu, and if we don't install/use Wireshark or any other more heavy duty tools, what is a way to use tcpdump so that 1) It can print out GET /foo/bar HTTP/1.1 [request content in RAW text] [response content in RAW text] POST /foo/... HTTP/1.1 this should be able to be done by tcpdump or by using tcpdump in a short shell script or Ruby / Python / Perl script. 2) Actually, it can be neat if a script can output HTML, with GET /foo/bar HTTP/1.1 POST /foo/... HTTP/1.1 on the page, for any browser to display, and then when clicked on any of those lines, it will expand to show the RAW content like (1) above does. Click again and it will hide the details. The expansion UI can be done using jQuery or any JS library. The script may be short... possibly less than 20 lines? Does anybody know how to do it either for (1) or (2)?

• Oracle’s Sun Server X4-8 with Built-in Elastic Computing

  We are excited to announce the release of Oracle's new 8-socket server, Sun Server X4-8. It’s the most flexible 8-socket x86 server Oracle has ever designed, and also the most powerful. Not only does it use the fastest Intel® Xeon® E7 v2 processors, but also its memory, I/O and storage subsystems are all designed for maximum performance and throughput. Like its predecessor, the Sun Server X4-8 uses a “glueless” design that allows for maximum performance for Oracle Database, while also reducing power consumption and improving reliability. The specs are pretty impressive. Sun Server X4-8 supports 120 cores (or 240 threads), 6 TB memory, 9.6 TB HDD capacity or 3.2 TB SSD capacity, contains 16 PCIe Gen 3 I/O expansion slots, and allows for up to 6.4 TB Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Cards. The Sun Server X4-8 is also the most dense x86 server with its 5U chassis, allowing 60% higher rack-level core and DIMM slot density than the competition.  There has been a lot of innovation in Oracle’s x86 product line, but the latest and most significant is a capability called elastic computing. • Oracle User Productivity Kit Translation

  Oracle's customers just love the User Productivity Kit (UPK). I hear only great things about it from our international customers at the Oracle Usability Advisory Board meetings too. The UPK is the perfect solution for enterprise applications training needs (I previously reviewed a fine book about UPK btw). One question I am often asked is how source content created using the UPK can be translated into another language. I spoke with Peter Maravelias, Principal Product Strategy Manager for UPK about this recently. UPK is already optimized for easy source-target translation already. There is even a solution for re-recording demos. Here's what you can do to get your source content into another language: Use UPK's ability to automatically translate events and actions. UPK comes with XML templates that allow you to accomplish this in 21 languages with a simple publishing action switch. These templates even deal with the tricky business of using gender-based translations. Spanish localization template sample Japanese localization template sample Use the Import and Export localization features to export additional custom content in a format like XLIFF, easily handled by translation tools. You could also export and import in Word format. Re-record the sound (audio) files that go with the recordings, one per screen. UPK's granular approach to the sound files means that timing isn't an option. Retiming demos isn't required. A tip here with sound files and XLFF-exported custom content is to facilitate translation context by avoiding explicit references to actions going on in the screen recordings. A text based storyboard with screenshots accompanying the sound files should also be provided to the translators. Provide a glossary of terms too. Use the re-record option in UPK to record any demo from a translated application. This will allow all the translated UI labels to be automatically captured. You may be required to resize any action events here due to text expansion issues. Of course, you will need translated data in the translated application too, so plan for this in advance. However, source-target language skills aren't required for the re-recording. The UPK Player itself, of course, is also available from Oracle along with content and doc in 21 languages. • My Reference for Amy Lewis

  The 2013 election campaign for the PASS Board of Directors is underway. There are seven qualified candidates running this year. They all offer a wealth of experience volunteering for PASS and the SQL Server community. One of these candidates, Amy Lewis, asked me to write a reference for her to include on her candidate application. I have a lot of experience working with Amy and was pleased to provide this reference: I enthusiastically support Amy Lewis as a candidate for the PASS Board of Directors. I have known and worked with Amy in various PASS' volunteer capacities for years, starting when we were both leaders of SIGs (the precursors to the Virtual Chapters.) In that time I have seen Amy grow as a leader, taking on increasing responsibility and developing her leadership skills in the process. From the Program Committee to the BI Virtual Chapter to her local user group's SQL Saturday Amy has demonstrated a capacity to organize and lead volunteers. A successful leader delivers results, and does so in a way that encourages and empowers the people she is working with; Amy embodies this leadership style. As Director for Virtual Chapters I have most recently worked with Amy in her capacity of DW/BI VC Leader. This VC is one of our largest and most active, and Amy's leadership is a key contribution to that success. I was pleased to see that Amy was also thinking about succession and prepared other volunteers to take over the chapter leadership. Amy has shown an understanding of PASS' strategic goals and has focused her volunteer efforts to help us reach those goals. For the past couple of years we have been trying to expand PASS reach and relevance to SQL communities around the world. The VCs are a key vehicle for this expansion. Amy embraced this idea and organized the VC to engage volunteers in Europe & Australia and provide content that could reach SQL professionals in those regions. A second key strategy for PASS is expanding into the data analytics space. Again Amy rose to the occasion helping to shape the program for our first Business Analytics Conference and leveraging the BI VC to promote the event. By all measures I think Amy is prepared to serve on the Board and contribute in a positive way.

• IRM and Consumerization

  As the season of rampant consumerism draws to its official close on 12th Night, it seems a fitting time to discuss consumerization - whereby technologies from the consumer market, such as the Android and iPad, are adopted by business organizations. I expect many of you will have received a shiny new mobile gadget for Christmas - and will be expecting to use it for work as well as leisure in 2011. In my case, I'm just getting to grips with my first Android phone. This trend developed so much during 2010 that a number of my customers have officially changed their stance on consumer devices - accepting consumerization as something to embrace rather than resist. Clearly, consumerization has significant implications for information control, as corporate data is distributed to consumer devices whether the organization is aware of it or not. I daresay that some DLP solutions can limit distribution to some extent, but this creates a conflict between accepting consumerization and frustrating it. So what does Oracle IRM have to offer the consumerized enterprise? First and foremost, consumerization does not automatically represent great additional risk - if an enterprise seals its sensitive information. Sealed files are encrypted, and that fundamental protection is not affected by copying files to consumer devices. A device might be lost or stolen, and the user might not think to report the loss of a personally owned device, but the data and the enterprise that owns it are protected. Indeed, the consumerization trend is another strong reason for enterprises to deploy IRM - to protect against this expansion of channels by which data might be accidentally exposed. It also enables encryption requirements to be met even though the enterprise does not own the device and cannot enforce device encryption. Moving on to the usage of sealed content on such devices, some of our customers are using virtual desktop solutions such that, in truth, the sealed content is being opened and used on a PC in the normal way, and the user is simply using their device for display purposes. This has several advantages: The sensitive documents are not actually on the devices, so device loss and theft are even less of a worry The enterprise has another layer of control over how and where content is used, as access to the virtual solution involves another layer of authentication and authorization - defence in depth It is a generic solution that means the enterprise does not need to actively support the ever expanding variety of consumer devices - the enterprise just manages some virtual access to traditional systems using something like Citrix or Remote Desktop services. It is a tried and tested way of accessing sealed documents. People have being using Oracle IRM in conjunction with Citrix and Remote Desktop for several years. For some scenarios, we also have the "IRM wrapper" option that provides a simple app for sealing and unsealing content on a range of operating systems. We are busy working on other ways to support the explosion of consumer devices, but this blog is not a proper forum for talking about them at this time.
