  • CSS Z-Index with Gradient Background

    - by Jona
    I'm making a small webpage where the I would like the top banner with some text to remain on top, as such: HTML: <div id = "topBanner"> <h1>Some Text</h1> </div> CSS: #topBanner{ position:fixed; background-color: #CCCCCC; width: 100%; height:200px; top:0; left:0; z-index:900; background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, rgba(204,204,204,0.65) 0%, rgba(204,204,204,0.44) 32%, rgba(204,204,204,0.12) 82%, rgba(204,204,204,0) 100%); /* FF3.6+ */ background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(0%,rgba(204,204,204,0.65)), color-stop(32%,rgba(204,204,204,0.44)), color-stop(82%,rgba(204,204,204,0.12)), color-stop(100%,rgba(204,204,204,0))); /* Chrome,Safari4+ */ background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, rgba(204,204,204,0.65) 0%,rgba(204,204,204,0.44) 32%,rgba(204,204,204,0.12) 82%,rgba(204,204,204,0) 100%); /* Chrome10+,Safari5.1+ */ background: -o-linear-gradient(top, rgba(204,204,204,0.65) 0%,rgba(204,204,204,0.44) 32%,rgba(204,204,204,0.12) 82%,rgba(204,204,204,0) 100%); /* Opera 11.10+ */ background: -ms-linear-gradient(top, rgba(204,204,204,0.65) 0%,rgba(204,204,204,0.44) 32%,rgba(204,204,204,0.12) 82%,rgba(204,204,204,0) 100%); /* IE10+ */ background: linear-gradient(to bottom, rgba(204,204,204,0.65) 0%,rgba(204,204,204,0.44) 32%,rgba(204,204,204,0.12) 82%,rgba(204,204,204,0) 100%); /* W3C */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient( startColorstr='#a6cccccc', endColorstr='#00cccccc',GradientType=0 ); /* IE6-9 */ } /*WebPage Header*/ h1{ font-size:3em; color:blue; text-shadow:#CCCCCC 2px 2px 2px, #000 0 -1px 2px; position: absolute; width: 570px; left:50%; right:50%; line-height:20px; margin-left: -285px; z-index:999; } The z-index works fine, except that because I'm using a gradient any time I scroll down the elements behind the banner are still visible, albeit somewhat transparent. Is there any way to make them total invisible? i.e., what I'm trying to do is make it as though the banner is a solid color, even though it's a gradient. Thanks in advance for any help!

  • CSS Ease-in-out to full screen

    - by Aditya Singh
    I have a black background div of a size which contains an image. <div id="Banner"> <img onclick="expand();" src="hola.jpg"> </div> #Banner { position:relative; height:50px; width:50px; margin:0 auto; background-color:#000000; -webkit-transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0.5s; -moz-transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0.5s; -o-transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0.5s; transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0.5s; } <script type="text/javascript"> function expand(){ document.getElementById('Banner').style['height'] = '250'; document.getElementById('Banner').style['width'] = '250'; } </script> So when the user clicks on the image, the div transitions to 250, 250. My problem is that, i want it to to transition to full screen. The following javascript function does expand to fullscreen but the transition effect doesn't come. I need to do it from a javascript code without jquery. function expand(){ document.getElementById('Banner').style['position'] = 'absolute'; document.getElementById('Banner').style['height'] = '100%'; document.getElementById('Banner').style['width'] = '100%'; document.getElementById('Banner').style['top'] = '0'; document.getElementById('Banner').style['left'] = '0'; } Please advice. Update : Solution Roger below has provided with an alternative solution. This takes care if the document has already been scrolled and is another place. Will expand the div to full browser screen. sz=getSize(); //function returns screen width and height in pixels currentWidth=200; currentHeight=200; scalex=sz.W/currentWidth; scaley=sz.H/currentHeight; transx=0-((expandingDiv.offsetLeft+(currentWidth/2))-(sz.W/2))+document.body.scrollLeft; transy=0-((expandingDiv.offsetTop+(cuttentHeight/2))-(sz.H/2))+document.body.scrollTop; transx = transx.toString(); transy = transy.toString(); document.getElementById("Banner").style['-webkit-transform'] = 'translate('+transx+'px,'+transy+'px) scale('+scalex+','+scaley+')';

  • current page highlights on child pages

    - by user557318
    Im trying to achieve current page highlights on wordpress similar to this site Alex Soth. I'm very nearly there with my css. At present i have current page highlights on pages, ie. home,calendar, projects. However when it come to current page highlights on child pages i have a problem. the indented child page list appears on hover when selecting a child page, but after page selection the menu reverts back to the standard pages menu with no visible child menus? unlike the link to the Alex Soth site where the extended menu stays and current page is highlighted I know that the answer will be a simple piece of css involving current_page_item and possible position:relative to obtain the menu staying visible after selection. But i can for the life of me work it out. Any ideas Ive attached my relivant pieces of css below?? thanks /* =Link Styles ------------------------------------------------------------------*/ input#submit { cursor: pointer; } input#searchsubmit { background: url(images/search.png) no-repeat center; } input#searchsubmit:hover { background: url(images/search.png) no-repeat center #3399FF !important; cursor: pointer; } .navigation a:hover, input#submit { background: #3399FF; color: #3399FF !important; } a { color: #666; } a:hover, a:hover span { color: #c11501 !important;background-color: #fae100; } .entry sup a, #main_nav .current_page_item a, #main_nav .current_page_ancestor a { color: #666 !important; } #main_nav h1.masthead a { color: #666; } #main_nav h1.masthead a:hover { border-right: none; } h2 a, #main_nav a { color: #3399FF; } img a, img a:hover { text-decoration: none; } .post a, .navigation a { font-weight: bold; color: #000; } .navigation a { background: #EEE; color: #666; font-weight: normal; padding: 3px 0px; border-radius: 0px; -webkit-border-radius: 0px; -moz-border-radius: 0px; } .post sup { font-size: 11px; color: #aaa; } .post sup a { border: 0; margin: 0; font-weight: normal; font-size: 10px; } #supplementary .post_nav ul.about_nav li a, #supplementary .post_nav ul.single_post_meta a, #supplementary ul.contact_key li a { color: #888888; border-bottom: 0; } /* =Main Menu ------------------------------------------------------------------*/ #main_nav ul.menu li { position: relative; } #main_nav ul.menu li:hover ul.sub-menu, #main_nav ul.menu li:hover ul.children { display: block; }

  • Position:absolute

    - by Andrew
    I have I have a div called logo. I want the logo to be on top of other areas and to overlap into the the preface top of a drupal site, the logo currently sits in the header area. I looked up position absolute and I think that what I need to use but when I use position absolute the logo disappears, I can see it if I use position fixed, relative etc. I thought the logo was being hidden because I was not using a z-index but even with that I cant see the logo. What am I doing wrong? #logo { position: absolute; top: 30px; /* 30 pixels from the top of the page */ left: 80px; /* 80 pixels from the left hand side */ z-index:1099; border: 1px solid red; /* So we can see what is happening */ } Also does anyone know of a really good free online css course? Here is some additional information, namely the CSS and the page.tpl.php: <?php // $Id: page.tpl.php,v 1.1.2.5 2010/04/08 07:02:59 sociotech Exp $ ?><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="<?php print $language->language; • Weird duplicate IE div.

    Here's a weird bug I've found, IE8 is duplicating my div, but only a part of it. How it looks in IE8: And here's how it's meant to look in FF: And the HTML: <div id="roundbigbox"> <p id="pro">Produkter</p> <table id="cart"> <div id="titles"> <div id="thinlinecopy"></div> <div id="varekodetext"> <p>Varekode</p> </div> <div id="produkttext"> <p>Produkt</p> </div> <div id="pristext"> <p>Pris</p> </div> <div id="antalltext"> <p>Antall</p> </div> <div id="pristotaltext"> <p>Pris total</p> </div> <div id="sletttext"> <p>Slett</p></div> <div id="thinline"></div> </div> ...content... <div class="delete"> <a id="slett" href="/order/delete/1329?return=" title="Slett"><!--Slett--></a> </div> </div> CSS for FF: d iv #roundbigbox { background-image:url(../../upload/EW_p_og_L.png); background-position:top center; background-repeat:no-repeat; padding:5px; padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:0px; width:760px; height:1%; border-width:1px; border-color:#dddddd; border-radius:10px; -moz-border-radius:10px; -webkit-border-radius:10px; z-index:1; position:relative; overflow:hidden; margin:0; margin-bottom:10px; } CSS for IE: div #roundbigbox { background-image:url(../../upload/EW_p_og_L.png); background-position:top center; background-repeat:no-repeat; padding:5px; padding-right:50px; padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:-20px; width:760px; height:1%; border-width:1px; border-color:#dddddd; z-index:1; position:relative; overflow:hidden; margin:0; margin-bottom:10px; } What could cause such a weird bug? It's not duplicated in the HTML. I am stumped! Thanks for any responses.

  • Vertical textes inside of table headers with respect of a JavaScript based on SVG library

    - by Oleg
    I use jqGrid with many columns contains Boolean information, which are displayed as checkboxes inside of table (see http://www.ok-soft-gmbh.com/VerticalHeaders/TestFixedO.htm as an example). To display information more compact I use vertical column headers. It works very well and works in jqGrid in all browsers (see my discussion with Tony Tomov in jqGrid forum http://www.trirand.com/blog/?page_id=393/feature-request/headers-with-vertical-orientation/), but in IE vertical texts looks not nice enough. I was asked from users why the texted displayed so strange. So I think about using a JavaScript based SVG library like SVG Web ( http://code.google.com/p/svgweb/ ) or Raphaël ( http://raphaeljs.com/ ). SVG is very powerful and it is difficult to find a good example is not very easy. I need only display vertical texts (-90 grad, from bottom to up) and use if possible without working in mode of absolute position. So one more times my question: I need have a possibility to display vertical texts (-90 grad rotation) inside of <td> element of table header. I want use a JavaScript based SVG library like SVG Web or Raphaël. The solution must support on IE6. Have somebody a good reference to example which could help me to do this? If somebody post a whole solution of the problem I would be happy. To be exact here is my current solution: I define .rotate { -webkit-transform: rotate(-90deg); /* Safari, Chrome */ -moz-transform: rotate(-90deg); /* Firefox */ -o-transform: rotate(-90deg); /* Opera starting with 10.50 */ /* Internet Explorer: */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.BasicImage(rotation=3); } define RotateCheckboxColumnHeaders function var RotateCheckboxColumnHeaders = function (grid, headerHeight) { // we use grid as context (if one have more as one table on tnhe page) var trHead = $("thead:first tr", grid.hdiv); var cm = grid.getGridParam("colModel"); $("thead:first tr th").height(headerHeight); headerHeight = $("thead:first tr th").height(); for (var iCol = 0; iCol < cm.length; iCol++) { var cmi = cm[iCol]; if (cmi.formatter === 'checkbox') { // we must set width of column header div BEFOR adding class "rotate" to // prevent text cutting based on the current column width var headDiv = $("th:eq(" + iCol + ") div", trHead); headDiv.width(headerHeight).addClass("rotate"); if (!$.browser.msie) { if ($.browser.mozilla) { headDiv.css("left", (cmi.width - headerHeight) / 2 + 3).css("bottom", 7); } else { headDiv.css("left", (cmi.width - headerHeight) / 2); } } else { var ieVer = jQuery.browser.version.substr(0, 3); // Internet Explorer if (ieVer !== "6.0" && ieVer !== "7.0") { headDiv.css("left", cmi.width / 2 - 4).css("bottom", headerHeight / 2); $("span", headDiv).css("left", 0); } else { headDiv.css("left", 3); } } } } }; And include a call like RotateCheckboxColumnHeaders(grid, 110); after creating jqGrid.

  • IE positioning problems

    In every browser but IE, on euroworker.no/order the little green arrow under the word "produkt" sits on top of my div container. Why in the world does this not work in IE? CSS for the top prgress indicator: #checkoutProgress { width: auto; padding-top: 1em; height: 30px; overflow:hidden; font-family: "Helvetica"; font-size:18px; float:left; /* margin-bottom:22px;*/ margin-left:0px; } #checkoutProgress a { padding: 10px; /*border-width: 2px; margin-right: 20px;*/ text-decoration:none; font-size: 17.26px; color:#dadada; text-transform:uppercase; } #checkoutProgress a:hover { padding: 10px; /*border-width: 2px; margin-right: 20px;*/ text-decoration:none; font-size: 17.26px; color:#818072; } /* completed steps */ #checkoutProgress a.completed { border-color: #70D66D; } /* current step */ #checkoutProgress a.active { /* border-color: #ADD8E6;*/ font-weight: bold; /*background-color: #fffccc; border-color: #ADD8E6;*/ background-image:url(../../upload/urhere_arr.png); background-position:bottom center; /*padding-left:15px;*/ color:#a3a398; } For the box: div #roundbigbox { background-image:url(../../upload/EW_p_og_L.png); background-position:top center; background-repeat:no-repeat; padding:5px; padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:0px; width:760px; height:1%; border-width:1px; border-color:#dddddd; border-radius:10px; -moz-border-radius:10px; -webkit-border-radius:10px; z-index:1; position:relative; overflow:hidden; margin:0; margin-bottom:10px; } fieldset css: fieldset.container { border: 0; } And some HTML: <fieldset class="container"> <div id="checkoutProgress" class="progressCart"> <a href="/order" class=" active" id="progressCart"><span>Produkt</span></span></a> <a href="/checkout/selectAddress" class="completed " id="progressAddress"><span>kunde info</span></a> <a href="/checkout/shipping" class="completed " id="progressShipping"><span>Leveringsmåte</span></a> <a href="/checkout/pay" class="" id="progressPayment"><span>Betaling & Fullfør</span><</a> </div> </fieldset> </div> <form action="/order... > <input type="hidden"...> <div id="roundbigbox"> <p id="pro">Produkter</p> More content </div>

    This is another noobish mistake from me but I've placed some text in my page but after adding some padding to my div tag it's impossible for me to place my Text in the vertical center. • Vertical text inside table headers using a JavaScript-based SVG library

  • Div width: auto and IE

    - by Andrew Heath
    I'm using the jQuery qTip to show individual users and their votes when an average rating is mousedover. qTip calls a PHP file which grabs all the users and votes for the item from the MySQL database and builds a 3 column table, which appears as the tooltip. In Firefox, the tooltip displays properly. In IE7 (haven't tested on IE8 yet), the tooltip is the proper height, but the width is only 2 or 3 characters - not the entire table. If I set the width of the div to a fixed number, say width: 300px; I can coax IE into displaying it properly. However, the length of my users' names varies considerably, and I'd rather not nail down the div to its maximum possible width and then have a crapload of whitespace when you look at an item voted on only by "Joe". Using width: auto; has no effect in IE7. Are there alternatives? Sorry if I've overlooked a similar question. I searched for a bit before posting but didn't find anything suitable. EDIT TO ADD CODE: <div style="-moz-border-radius: 0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt; position: absolute; width: 358px; display: none; top: 384.617px; left: 463.5px; z-index: 6000;" class="qtip qtip-defaults" qtip="0"> <div style="position: relative; overflow: hidden; text-align: left;" class="qtip-wrapper"> <div style="overflow: hidden; background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% white; border: 1px solid rgb(211, 211, 211);" class="qtip-contentWrapper"> <div class="qtip-content qtip-content" style="background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% white; color: rgb(17, 17, 17); overflow: hidden; text-align: left; padding: 5px 9px;"> <div id="WhoResults"> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td>guy1</td> <td>guy2</td> <td>guy3</td> </tr> <tr> <td>guy4</td> <td>guy5</td> <td>guy6</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> I have applied no CSS styling. That's all been handled by qTip. I tried to format it as best I could. Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Sidebar with CSS3 transform

    - by Malcoda
    Goal I'm working on a collapsible sidebar using jQuery for animation. I would like to have vertical text on the sidebar that acts as a label and can swap on the animateOut/animateIn effect. Normally I would use an image of the text that I've simply swapped vertically, and switch it out on animation, but with CSS3 transforms I'd like to get it to work instead. Problem The problem I'm facing is that setting the height on my rotated container makes it expand horizontally (as it's rotated 90deg) so that doesn't work. I then tried to set the width (hoping it would expand vertically, acting as height), but that has an odd effect of causing the width of my parent container to expand as well. Fix? Anyone know why this happens and also what the fix/workaround could be without setting max-widths and overflow: hidden? I've got a fairly good understanding of both html elements behavior and css3, but this is stumping me. Live Example Here's a fiddle that demonstrates my problem: Fiddle The collapse-pane class is what I have rotated and contains the span I have my text inside. You'll notice it has a width set, that widens the border, but also affects the parent container. The code: CSS: .right-panel{ position:fixed; right:0; top:0; bottom:0; border:1px solid #ccc; background-color:#efefef; } .collapse-pane{ margin-top:50px; width:30px; border:1px solid #999; cursor:pointer; /* Safari */ -webkit-transform: rotate(-90deg); /* Firefox */ -moz-transform: rotate(-90deg); /* IE */ -ms-transform: rotate(-90deg); /* Opera */ -o-transform: rotate(-90deg); /* Internet Explorer */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.BasicImage(rotation=3); } .collapse-pane span{ padding:5px; } HTML <div class="right-panel"> <div class="collapse-pane"> <span class="expand">Expand</span> </div> <div style="width:0;" class="panel-body"> <div style="display:none;" class="panel-body-inner"> adsfasdfasdf </div> </div> </div> JavaScript (Thought not really relevant) $(document).ready(function(){ var height = $(".right-panel").height(); $(".collapse-pane").css({marginTop: height/2 - 20}); $('.collapse-pane').click(function(){ if($(".collapse-pane span").html() == "Expand"){ $(".panel-body").animate({width:200}, 400); $(".panel-body-inner").fadeIn(500); $(".collapse-pane span").html("Collapse"); }else{ $(".panel-body").animate({width:00}, 400); $(".panel-body-inner").fadeOut(300); $(".collapse-pane span").html("Expand"); } }); }); I hope this was clear... Thanks for any help!

  • How to have other divs with a flash liquid layout that fits to the page?

    - by brybam
    Basically the majority of my content is flash based. I designed it using Flash Builder (Flex) and Its in a liquid layout, (everything is in percents) and if im JUST embedding the flash content it scales to the page fine, and i have the flash content set to have a padding of 50 px. I put a header div in fine with no problems, but I have 2 problems, the first being the footer div seems to cover up the buttom of the flash content in IE, but it looks just fine in chrome. How can I solve this? I'm using the stock embed code that Flex provides, I tried to edit the css style for the div which I think is #flashContent and give it a min width and min height but it didnt seem to work, actually anything I did to #flashContent didn't seem to do anything, maybe its not the div i need to be adding that attribute to... And my other problem is I dont even know where to start when it comes to placing a div thats 280width by 600height colum to the right side of the flash content. If i could specify a size for the flash content, and the float it left, and float the colum right, and clear it with the container div id be just fine....But remember the flash content is set to 100% Scale (well techically 100%x80% because it looked better that way). Does anyone know how I can start to deal with creating a more complex scaleable flash layouts that includes other divs? ALL WELL MAINTAINING IE SUPPORT? IE is ruining my life. Here's the code I'm using: (or if it will help you visualize what im trying to do here's the page where im working on setting this up http://apumpkinpatch.com/textmashnew/) <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en"> <head> <title>TextMixup</title> <meta name="google" value="notranslate"> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <link href="css.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5.2/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="../appassets/scripts/jquery.titlealert.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-19768131-2']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? In a previous post the concept of CSS media queries was introduced and I discussed the fundamentals of how they can be used to target different screen sizes. I showed how they could be used to convert a 3-column wide page into a more vertical view of data that displays better on devices such as an iPhone:     In this post I'll provide an additional look at how CSS media queries can be used to mobile-enable a sample site called "Widget Masters" without having to change any server-side code or HTML code. The site that will be discussed is shown next:     This site has some of the standard items shown in most websites today including a title area, menu bar, and sections where data is displayed. Without including CSS media queries the site is readable but has to be zoomed out to see everything on a mobile device, cuts-off some of the menu items, and requires horizontal scrolling to get to additional content. The following image shows what the site looks like on an iPhone. While the site works on mobile devices it's definitely not optimized for mobile.     Let's take a look at how CSS media queries can be used to override existing styles in the site based on different screen widths. Adding CSS Media Queries into a Site The Widget Masters Website relies on standard CSS combined with HTML5 elements to provide the layout shown earlier. For example, to layout the menu bar shown at the top of the page the nav element is used as shown next. A standard div element could certainly be used as well if desired.   <nav> <ul class="clearfix"> <li><a href="#home">Home</a></li> <li><a href="#products">Products</a></li> <li><a href="#aboutus">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="#contactus">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="#store">Store</a></li> </ul> </nav>   This HTML is combined with the CSS shown next to add a CSS3 gradient, handle the horizontal orientation, and add some general hover effects.   nav { width: 100%; } nav ul { border-radius: 6px; height: 40px; width: 100%; margin: 0; padding: 0; background: rgb(125,126,125); /* Old browsers */ background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, rgba(125,126,125,1) 0%, rgba(14,14,14,1) 100%); /* FF3.6+ */ background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(0%,rgba(125,126,125,1)), color-stop(100%,rgba(14,14,14,1))); /* Chrome,Safari4+ */ background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, rgba(125,126,125,1) 0%, rgba(14,14,14,1) 100%); /* Chrome10+,Safari5.1+ */ background: -o-linear-gradient(top, rgba(125,126,125,1) 0%, rgba(14,14,14,1) 100%); /* Opera 11.10+ */ background: -ms-linear-gradient(top, rgba(125,126,125,1) 0%, rgba(14,14,14,1) 100%); /* IE10+ */ background: linear-gradient(top, rgba(125,126,125,1) 0%, rgba(14,14,14,1) 100%); /* W3C */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient( startColorstr='#7d7e7d', endColorstr='#0e0e0e',GradientType=0 ); /* IE6-9 */ } nav ul > li { list-style: none; float: left; margin: 0; padding: 0; } nav ul > li:first-child { margin-left: 8px; } nav ul > li > a { color: #ccc; text-decoration: none; line-height: 2.8em; font-size: 0.95em; font-weight: bold; padding: 8px 25px 7px 25px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } nav ul > li a:hover { background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1); color: #fff; }   When mobile devices hit the site the layout of the menu items needs to be adjusted so that they're all visible without having to swipe left or right to get to them. This type of modification can be accomplished using CSS media queries by targeting specific screen sizes. To start, a media query can be added into the site's CSS file as shown next: @media screen and (max-width:320px) { /* CSS style overrides for this screen width go here */ } This media query targets screens that have a maximum width of 320 pixels. Additional types of queries can also be added – refer to my previous post for more details as well as resources that can be used to test media queries in different devices. In that post I emphasize (and I'll emphasize again) that CSS media queries only modify the overall layout and look and feel of a site. They don't optimize the site as far as the size of the images or content sent to the device which is important to keep in mind. To make the navigation menu more accessible on devices such as an iPhone or Android the CSS shown next can be used. This code changes the height of the menu from 40 pixels to 100%, takes off the li element floats, changes the line-height, and changes the margins.   @media screen and (max-width:320px) { nav ul { height: 100%; } nav ul > li { float: none; } nav ul > li a { line-height: 1.5em; } nav ul > li:first-child { margin-left: 0px; } /* Additional CSS overrides go here */ }   The following image shows an example of what the menu look like when run on a device with a width of 320 pixels:   Mobile devices with a maximum width of 480 pixels need different CSS styles applied since they have 160 additional pixels of width. This can be done by adding a new CSS media query into the stylesheet as shown next. Looking through the CSS you'll see that only a minimal override is added to adjust the padding of anchor tags since the menu fits by default in this screen width.   @media screen and (max-width: 480px) { nav ul > li > a { padding: 8px 10px 7px 10px; } }   Running the site on a device with 480 pixels results in the menu shown next being rendered. Notice that the space between the menu items is much smaller compared to what was shown when the main site loads in a standard browser.     In addition to modifying the menu, the 3 horizontal content sections shown earlier can be changed from a horizontal layout to a vertical layout so that they look good on a variety of smaller mobile devices and are easier to navigate by end users. The HTML5 article and section elements are used as containers for the 3 sections in the site as shown next:   <article class="clearfix"> <section id="info"> <header>Why Choose Us?</header> <br /> <img id="mainImage" src="Images/ArticleImage.png" title="Article Image" /> <p> Post emensos insuperabilis expeditionis eventus languentibus partium animis, quas periculorum varietas fregerat et laborum, nondum tubarum cessante clangore vel milite locato per stationes hibernas. </p> </section> <section id="products"> <header>Products</header> <br /> <img id="gearsImage" src="Images/Gears.png" title="Article Image" /> <p> <ul> <li>Widget 1</li> <li>Widget 2</li> <li>Widget 3</li> <li>Widget 4</li> <li>Widget 5</li> </ul> </p> </section> <section id="FAQ"> <header>FAQ</header> <br /> <img id="faqImage" src="Images/faq.png" title="Article Image" /> <p> <ul> <li>FAQ 1</li> <li>FAQ 2</li> <li>FAQ 3</li> <li>FAQ 4</li> <li>FAQ 5</li> </ul> </p> </section> </article>   To force the sections into a vertical layout for smaller mobile devices the CSS styles shown next can be added into the media queries targeting 320 pixel and 480 pixel widths. Styles to target the display size of the images in each section are also included. It's important to note that the original image is still being downloaded from the server and isn't being optimized in any way for the mobile device. It's certainly possible for the CSS to include URL information for a mobile-optimized image if desired. @media screen and (max-width:320px) { section { float: none; width: 97%; margin: 0px; padding: 5px; } #wrapper { padding: 5px; width: 96%; } #mainImage, #gearsImage, #faqImage { width: 100%; height: 100px; } } @media screen and (max-width: 480px) { section { float: none; width: 98%; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px; padding: 5px; } article > section:last-child { margin-right: 0px; float: none; } #bottomSection { width: 99%; } #wrapper { padding: 5px; width: 96%; } #mainImage, #gearsImage, #faqImage { width: 100%; height: 100px; } }   The following images show the site rendered on an iPhone with the CSS media queries in place. Each of the sections now displays vertically making it much easier for the user to access them. Images inside of each section also scale appropriately to fit properly.     CSS media queries provide a great way to override default styles in a website and target devices with different resolutions. In this post you've seen how CSS media queries can be used to convert a standard browser-based site into a site that is more accessible to mobile users. Although much more can be done to optimize sites for mobile, CSS media queries provide a nice starting point if you don't have the time or resources to create mobile-specific versions of sites.

  • Detecting HTML5/CSS3 Features using Modernizr

    - by dwahlin
    HTML5, CSS3, and related technologies such as canvas and web sockets bring a lot of useful new features to the table that can take Web applications to the next level. These new technologies allow applications to be built using only HTML, CSS, and JavaScript allowing them to be viewed on a variety of form factors including tablets and phones. Although HTML5 features offer a lot of promise, it’s not realistic to develop applications using the latest technologies without worrying about supporting older browsers in the process. If history has taught us anything it’s that old browsers stick around for years and years which means developers have to deal with backward compatibility issues. This is especially true when deploying applications to the Internet that target the general public. This begs the question, “How do you move forward with HTML5 and CSS3 technologies while gracefully handling unsupported features in older browsers?” Although you can write code by hand to detect different HTML5 and CSS3 features, it’s not always straightforward. For example, to check for canvas support you need to write code similar to the following:   <script> window.onload = function () { if (canvasSupported()) { alert('canvas supported'); } }; function canvasSupported() { var canvas = document.createElement('canvas'); return (canvas.getContext && canvas.getContext('2d')); } </script> If you want to check for local storage support the following check can be made. It’s more involved than it should be due to a bug in older versions of Firefox. <script> window.onload = function () { if (localStorageSupported()) { alert('local storage supported'); } }; function localStorageSupported() { try { return ('localStorage' in window && window['localStorage'] != null); } catch(e) {} return false; } </script> Looking through the previous examples you can see that there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to checking browsers for HTML5 and CSS3 features. It takes a lot of work to test every possible scenario and every version of a given browser. Fortunately, you don’t have to resort to writing custom code to test what HTML5/CSS3 features a given browser supports. By using a script library called Modernizr you can add checks for different HTML5/CSS3 features into your pages with a minimal amount of code on your part. Let’s take a look at some of the key features Modernizr offers.   Getting Started with Modernizr The first time I heard the name “Modernizr” I thought it “modernized” older browsers by added missing functionality. In reality, Modernizr doesn’t actually handle adding missing features or “modernizing” older browsers. The Modernizr website states, “The name Modernizr actually stems from the goal of modernizing our development practices (and ourselves)”. Because it relies on feature detection rather than browser sniffing (a common technique used in the past – that never worked that great), Modernizr definitely provides a more modern way to test features that a browser supports and can even handle loading additional scripts called shims or polyfills that fill in holes that older browsers may have. It’s a great tool to have in your arsenal if you’re a web developer. Modernizr is available at http://modernizr.com. Two different types of scripts are available including a development script and custom production script. To generate a production script, the site provides a custom script generation tool rather than providing a single script that has everything under the sun for HTML5/CSS3 feature detection. Using the script generation tool you can pick the specific test functionality that you need and ignore everything that you don’t need. That way the script is kept as small as possible. An example of the custom script download screen is shown next. Notice that specific CSS3, HTML5, and related feature tests can be selected. Once you’ve downloaded your custom script you can add it into your web page using the standard <script> element and you’re ready to start using Modernizr. <script src="Scripts/Modernizr.js" type="text/javascript"></script>   Modernizr and the HTML Element Once you’ve add a script reference to Modernizr in a page it’ll go to work for you immediately. In fact, by adding the script several different CSS classes will be added to the page’s <html> element at runtime. These classes define what features the browser supports and what features it doesn’t support. Features that aren’t supported get a class name of “no-FeatureName”, for example “no-flexbox”. Features that are supported get a CSS class name based on the feature such as “canvas” or “websockets”. An example of classes added when running a page in Chrome is shown next:   <html class=" js flexbox canvas canvastext webgl no-touch geolocation postmessage websqldatabase indexeddb hashchange history draganddrop websockets rgba hsla multiplebgs backgroundsize borderimage borderradius boxshadow textshadow opacity cssanimations csscolumns cssgradients cssreflections csstransforms csstransforms3d csstransitions fontface generatedcontent video audio localstorage sessionstorage webworkers applicationcache svg inlinesvg smil svgclippaths"> Here’s an example of what the <html> element looks like at runtime with Internet Explorer 9:   <html class=" js no-flexbox canvas canvastext no-webgl no-touch geolocation postmessage no-websqldatabase no-indexeddb hashchange no-history draganddrop no-websockets rgba hsla multiplebgs backgroundsize no-borderimage borderradius boxshadow no-textshadow opacity no-cssanimations no-csscolumns no-cssgradients no-cssreflections csstransforms no-csstransforms3d no-csstransitions fontface generatedcontent video audio localstorage sessionstorage no-webworkers no-applicationcache svg inlinesvg smil svgclippaths">   When using Modernizr it’s a common practice to define an <html> element in your page with a no-js class added as shown next:   <html class="no-js">   You’ll see starter projects such as HTML5 Boilerplate (http://html5boilerplate.com) or Initializr (http://initializr.com) follow this approach (see my previous post for more information on HTML5 Boilerplate). By adding the no-js class it’s easy to tell if a browser has JavaScript enabled or not. If JavaScript is disabled then no-js will stay on the <html> element. If JavaScript is enabled, no-js will be removed by Modernizr and a js class will be added along with other classes that define supported/unsupported features. Working with HTML5 and CSS3 Features You can use the CSS classes added to the <html> element directly in your CSS files to determine what style properties to use based upon the features supported by a given browser. For example, the following CSS can be used to render a box shadow for browsers that support that feature and a simple border for browsers that don’t support the feature: .boxshadow #MyContainer { border: none; -webkit-box-shadow: #666 1px 1px 1px; -moz-box-shadow: #666 1px 1px 1px; } .no-boxshadow #MyContainer { border: 2px solid black; }   If a browser supports box-shadows the boxshadow CSS class will be added to the <html> element by Modernizr. It can then be associated with a given element. This example associates the boxshadow class with a div with an id of MyContainer. If the browser doesn’t support box shadows then the no-boxshadow class will be added to the <html> element and it can be used to render a standard border around the div. This provides a great way to leverage new CSS3 features in supported browsers while providing a graceful fallback for older browsers. In addition to using the CSS classes that Modernizr provides on the <html> element, you also use a global Modernizr object that’s created. This object exposes different properties that can be used to detect the availability of specific HTML5 or CSS3 features. For example, the following code can be used to detect canvas and local storage support. You can see that the code is much simpler than the code shown at the beginning of this post. It also has the added benefit of being tested by a large community of web developers around the world running a variety of browsers.   $(document).ready(function () { if (Modernizr.canvas) { //Add canvas code } if (Modernizr.localstorage) { //Add local storage code } }); The global Modernizr object can also be used to test for the presence of CSS3 features. The following code shows how to test support for border-radius and CSS transforms:   $(document).ready(function () { if (Modernizr.borderradius) { $('#MyDiv').addClass('borderRadiusStyle'); } if (Modernizr.csstransforms) { $('#MyDiv').addClass('transformsStyle'); } });   Several other CSS3 feature tests can be performed such as support for opacity, rgba, text-shadow, CSS animations, CSS transitions, multiple backgrounds, and more. A complete list of supported HTML5 and CSS3 tests that Modernizr supports can be found at http://www.modernizr.com/docs.   Loading Scripts using Modernizr In cases where a browser doesn’t support a specific feature you can either provide a graceful fallback or load a shim/polyfill script to fill in missing functionality where appropriate (more information about shims/polyfills can be found at https://github.com/Modernizr/Modernizr/wiki/HTML5-Cross-Browser-Polyfills). Modernizr has a built-in script loader that can be used to test for a feature and then load a script if the feature isn’t available. The script loader is built-into Modernizr and is also available as a standalone yepnope script (http://yepnopejs.com). It’s extremely easy to get started using the script loader and it can really simplify the process of loading scripts based on the availability of a particular browser feature. To load scripts dynamically you can use Modernizr’s load() function which accepts properties defining the feature to test (test property), the script to load if the test succeeds (yep property), the script to load if the test fails (nope property), and a script to load regardless of if the test succeeds or fails (both property). An example of using load() with these properties is show next: Modernizr.load({ test: Modernizr.canvas, yep: 'html5CanvasAvailable.js’, nope: 'excanvas.js’, both: 'myCustomScript.js' }); In this example Modernizr is used to not only load scripts but also to test for the presence of the canvas feature. If the target browser supports the HTML5 canvas then the html5CanvasAvailable.js script will be loaded along with the myCustomScript.js script (use of the yep property in this example is a bit contrived – it was added simply to demonstrate how the property can be used in the load() function). Otherwise, a polyfill script named excanvas.js will be loaded to add missing canvas functionality for Internet Explorer versions prior to 9. Once excanvas.js is loaded the myCustomScript.js script will be loaded. Because Modernizr handles loading scripts, you can also use it in creative ways. For example, you can use it to load local scripts when a 3rd party Content Delivery Network (CDN) such as one provided by Google or Microsoft is unavailable for whatever reason. The Modernizr documentation provides the following example that demonstrates the process for providing a local fallback for jQuery when a CDN is down:   Modernizr.load([ { load: '//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.4/jquery.js', complete: function () { if (!window.jQuery) { Modernizr.load('js/libs/jquery-1.6.4.min.js'); } } }, { // This will wait for the fallback to load and // execute if it needs to. load: 'needs-jQuery.js' } ]); This code attempts to load jQuery from the Google CDN first. Once the script is downloaded (or if it fails) the function associated with complete will be called. The function checks to make sure that the jQuery object is available and if it’s not Modernizr is used to load a local jQuery script. After all of that occurs a script named needs-jQuery.js will be loaded. Conclusion If you’re building applications that use some of the latest and greatest features available in HTML5 and CSS3 then Modernizr is an essential tool. By using it you can reduce the amount of custom code required to test for browser features and provide graceful fallbacks or even load shim/polyfill scripts for older browsers to help fill in missing functionality.

    Hey all, i have this peice of code that allows a user to select a jpg image, resize it and uploads it to the server driectory. The problem being is that it reloads the aspx page when it saves the image. My question is-is there any way to do this same thing but with ajax so that it doesn't leave the page after submitting it? I've done this pleanty of times with classic asp pages but never with a aspx page. Here is the code for the ASPX page: <%@ Page Trace="False" Language="vb" aspcompat="false" debug="true" validateRequest="false"%> <%@ Import Namespace=System.Drawing %> <%@ Import Namespace=System.Drawing.Imaging %> <%@ Import Namespace=System.Drawing.Text %> <%@ Import Namespace=System %> <%@ Import Namespace=System.IO %> <%@ Import Namespace=System.Web %> <%@ Import Namespace=System.ServiceProcess %> <%@ Import Namespace=Microsoft.Data.Odbc %> <%@ Import Namespace=System.Data.Odbc %> <%@ Import Namespace=MySql.Data.MySqlClient %> <%@ Import Namespace=MySql.Data %> <%@ Import Namespace=System.Drawing.Drawing2D %> <%@ Import Namespace="System.Data" %> <%@ Import Namespace="System.Data.ADO" %> <%@ Import Namespace=ADODB %> <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="VBScript" runat="server"> const Lx = 200 const Ly = 60 const upload_dir = "/img/avatar/" const upload_original = "tmpAvatar" const upload_thumb = "thumb" const upload_max_size = 256 dim fileExt dim newWidth, newHeight as integer dim l2 dim fileFld as HTTPPostedFile Dim originalimg As System.Drawing.Image dim msg dim upload_ok as boolean </script> <% Dim theID, theEmail, maleOrFemale theID = Request.QueryString("ID") theEmail = Request.QueryString("eMail") maleOrFemale = Request.QueryString("MF") randomize() upload_ok = false if lcase(Request.ServerVariables("REQUEST_METHOD"))="post" then fileFld = request.files(0) if fileFld.ContentLength > upload_max_size * 1024 then msg = "Sorry, the image must be less than " & upload_max_size & "Kb" else try fileExt = System.IO.Path.GetExtension(fileFld.FileName).ToLower() if fileExt = ".jpg" then originalImg = System.Drawing.Image.FromStream(fileFld.InputStream) if originalImg.Height > Ly then newWidth = Ly * (originalImg.Width / originalImg.Height) newHeight = Ly end if Dim thumb As New Bitmap(newWidth, newHeight) Dim gr_dest As Graphics = Graphics.FromImage(thumb) dim sb = new SolidBrush(System.Drawing.Color.White) gr_dest.SmoothingMode = System.Drawing.Drawing2D.SmoothingMode.HighQuality gr_dest.CompositingQuality = System.Drawing.Drawing2D.CompositingQuality.HighQuality gr_dest.FillRectangle(sb, 0, 0, thumb.Width, thumb.Height) gr_dest.DrawImage(originalImg, 0, 0, thumb.Width, thumb.Height) try originalImg.save(Server.MapPath(upload_dir & upload_original & fileExt), originalImg.rawformat) thumb.save(Server.MapPath(upload_dir & theID & fileExt), originalImg.rawformat) msg = "Uploaded " & fileFld.FileName & " to " & Server.MapPath(upload_dir & upload_original & fileExt) upload_ok = true File.Delete(Server.MapPath(upload_dir & upload_original & fileExt)) catch msg = "Sorry, there was a problem saving your avatar. I've tried removing white space, but no luck. Any ideas? If one of you can help it would be much appreciated.

  • Stacking two pictures with captions side by side and centered in Wordpress

    - by Jim
    Hi all - this is driving me absolutely nuts. I'm not the most experienced with CSS, so I'm hoping it is something simple. I'm running Wordpress 2.9.2 with "The Morning After" theme. I am trying to write a post where I want to display two small pictures, with captions, side-by-side and centered in the middle of the page. Here is the HTML code I am using to display the images: [caption align="alignnone" width="150" caption="Protein rest"] <a href="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/protein-rest.jpg"> <img title="Mash during protein rest" src="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/protein-rest-150x144.jpg" alt="Mash during protein rest" width="150" height="144" /> </a>[/caption] [caption align="alignnone" width="143" caption="Saccharification rest" captionalign="center"] <a href="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/saccharification-rest.jpg"> <img title="Mash during saccharification rest" src="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/saccharification-rest-143x150.jpg" alt="Mash during saccharification rest" width="143" height="150" /> </a>[/caption] I tried using "aligncenter" and "alignleft" for the caption align - if I use "alignleft" the pictures are lined up perfectly, but all the way to the left of the page. If I use "aligncenter" the pics are in the center, but stacked one on top of the other. My first thought was to wrap the images in a div using: <div style="text-align:center;">image code</div> but that doesn't work. Now, if I wrap in a centered div like that and omit the [caption] tags, it works, but I need the captions. Those caption tags are translated by Wordpress into it's own div of class wp-caption. I've also tried wrapping each separate image in its own div within a parent centered div wrapper. Here is the pertinent parts of the style.css - please let me know if you need any other info, and if you can help me, I will postpone jumping off the nearest bridge! Thanks!! Style.css: .aligncenter, div.aligncenter { display: block; margin: 14px auto; } .alignleft { float: left; margin: 0 14px 10px 0; } .alignright { float: right; margin: 0 0 10px 14px; } .wp-caption { border: 1px solid #ddd; text-align: center; background-color: #f3f3f3; padding-top: 4px; /* optional rounded corners for browsers that support it */ -moz-border-radius: 3px; -khtml-border-radius: 3px; -webkit-border-radius: 3px; border-radius: 3px; } .wp-caption img { margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 0 none; } .wp-caption p.wp-caption-text { font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px; padding: 5px 4px 5px 5px; margin: 0; } PS - I am aware of the Gallery feature available in Wordpress, but would like to avoid it and would love to understand why wrapping in a div doesn't move the whole kit to the center. Finally, just for the sake of completeness, here is the source of the page when loaded using the div wrapper and image code as above (so you can see how Wordpress translates the caption tags): <div style="text-align:center;"> <div class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 160px"> <a href="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/protein-rest.jpg"> <img title="Mash during protein rest" src="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/protein-rest-150x144.jpg" alt="Mash during protein rest" width="150" height="144" /> </a> <p class="wp-caption-text" style="text-align:center">Protein rest</p> </div> <div class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 153px"> <a href="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/saccharification-rest.jpg"> <img title="Mash during saccharification rest" src="http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/saccharification-rest-143x150.jpg" alt="Mash during saccharification rest" width="143" height="150" /> </a> <p class="wp-caption-text" style="text-align:center">Saccharification rest</p> </div> </div>
